Mods Rave and Yoshi, isn't there a real time monitoring of Pex threads? Or at least Pex forums? I've noticed that you lock garbage threads only at certain times of the day, most often at the END of the day. But what happens in between?

The fora of Music and Radio and Movies and TV are being bombarded with garbage threads by this Pex Menace more commonly known as Rachel. I know I'm not helping you by my constant replies, but I can never accept that to get rid of Rachel we have to keep quiet and accept that there are certain people who can break your rules and get away with it - even for a day.

Can't you conduct "inspections" several times a day to monitor the amount of accumulated waste in your respective forums? If that's physically impossible, can't more moderators be added? Can't you ban nicks? Can't you delete their access? What is being done?

Please Mods, solve this problem.

No, a real-time monitoring system is not possible, because I am not a robot who can afford to go online 24/7.

Your concern is practically everybody's concern. However, I can only do so much. As a moderator I do not have the power to ban nicks. Every time there is a complaint I forward it to Ada, who handles most of PEx's on-board affairs, and she has the power to ban nicks. But no matter how many times we ban every instance of the Rachel nick, he/she/it can always come back and re-register a new nick. That solution is practically pointless.

I do make it a point to be at least online at the end of the day to close whatever garbage threads there are, to avoid them getting longer when the day starts. Unfortunately, that's only what I could do. If people choose to post garbage, then I cannot possibly tell them not to do so if the point of their PEx existence is to be garbage delivery people.

What you can do is to send me a PM if you encounter problems, such that I can deal with them at once when I go online.

I'm not familiar with what's possible or not with moderator powers, but here's a suggestion: what if you can't post a thread without moderator's approval? Or what if you can't just apply for membership until the moderator checks you out--say, makes sure you have a valid email, etc.

Noel, the first suggestion would be nice, but the problem with that is the availability of the moderator. That would be fine with me since I'm online almost every day. But for the others who are totally swamped with work (moderating is still a part-time voluntary thing), there would be a problem. Proposed threads will stack up until the said moderator goes back online and approves them for posting (as far as I know the software does not support forum-dependent "rules" and so the whole PEx has to be subject to this).

Second, not all forums have the problem that my forums have (and thus kawawa naman yung mga regulars who post in another forum), and third, threads would most likely stagnate if there are no new threads to read/post in. In forums where thread turnover is slow (such as Travel and Lifestyle and The Academe), this somewhat deters the growth of that forum.

I wish we could do the second suggestion, but you can't really know how a person would behave on-board without him actually being on-board first.

Hey, why not keep this thread open for more suggestions? Maybe I can get some more ideas from you on how you want the forum to be run.

I'm assuming that what applies to one forum applies to all forum, and you can't have special rules for your particular forum? This is a technical thing you can't get around? Because if it's a matter of principle, I think M & T does need special rules, being vulnerable as it is to spurios threads.

I think this answers my first question above. You've actually checked on this, that the rules of one forum have to apply to all forums?

Definitely not a problem in the M & T forum. If we had, say, a tenth of the threads we already have, I think there are more than enough topics to keep us posting.

It might help discourage some...cut some of the psuedos down. Every little bit helps.

I'd defintely want more, uh intelligent discussion--I do know some entertainment figures (Bibeth Orteza, her husband, and their friends) do monitor this site, but lately they've been low-key, maybe because they don't see much interesting going on.

This may be another pain in the bud, but can we maybe split movies and tv? That might help right there...

Noel, maybe another thing to consider is whether members are actually inclined to intelligent discussion. I'm all for this; fact is I want more of this here. But my major deterrent would still actually be how many people actually bother to participate, even start such threads for discussion. There are only a few names that come to mind, but yes, maybe it could be done.

I'll check on the splitting thing when we have a meeting.

As Noel's suggestions, the following do not have to apply to the whole of Pex but to certain forums vulnerable to orchestrated attacks by bashers - M&TV and M&R.

Quasi-moderators or Monitors
I suggest the selection of a team of quasi-moderators or monitors among the Pex community that has as its sole responsibility the hourly monitoring of threads. A set of monitors may be allotted certain periods of each day. The on-duty Pexer would temporarily lock questionable threads pending review at COB (or at whichever schedule) by the Forum Moderator, by which time the threads in question may then be opened for Pexing or permanently locked. Criteria for “questionable thread” may be based on current Pex regulations. Timings of monitors may be scheduled according to traffic.

I suggest that any post instigated by “blacklisted” pexers (I suggest we make a list if there isn’t one yet) are immediately stamped as suspect. Any new nick applied after a certain date (from all IPs or only from the creature Rachel) to be watched closely by monitors to minimize the probability of Rachel and other offenders resorting to alternicks once their present identities are put under strict monitoring.

Probationary Period
Probationary pexers can post but will not be able to start a new thread.

Offenders on proby
I suggest a full review of M&TV Pexers, with the purpose of weeding out a list of repeat offenders. This pool of offenders, in view of their record will have some of their Pex privileges revoked during this probationary period. As said earlier, they can still post on existing threads but they cannot start a thread. This proby status may be removed depending on their subsequent posting behavior.

New nicks on proby
The probationary period will also involve new nicks applied for. This is not a new concept that newbie pexers will balk at since probationary status is used in many other institutions ie jobs, membership to clubs, etc. Again the newbie’s proby status may be removed depending on their subsequent posting behavior. The other purpose is of course to thwart efforts by the offenders on proby status to get their full status again through new nicks.

If you have problems about people "harassing" you on PMs, I suggest you take the matter to Ada, because she's the one who can help you best on that (you know, having the person banned, etc.).

Did you use the search function properly? Did you try to "search by keyword"? You must have misspelled it then, because if you tried a search for "de Rossi" (with a double "s"), you would have found what you are looking for.

Suggestion:

It seems that the idea of this forum is exemplery. It can be a means of sharing news, opinions, speculations, and other more media related things and perhapS an expression of oneself or ideally FREEDOM.

And that is what's happening in this forum. People are constantly posting things that they know, they heard, they assume, they perceive, they investigated and so forth BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE POWER TO EXPRESS. Those posts could be good, okay, calming, convincing etc... and could also be vile, degrading, absurd, not convincing etc... It can be anything under the sun because PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER! Maybe not that diverse or maybe that diverse but somehow, someway there is the slightest difference that makes every human unique in their own way.

Stating those, INDIVIDUALS cannot have full control of what is happening AND what is about to happen in this forum. Even if you try or we try our best to control undesired circumstances, we cannot compeletely eliminate those things. In other words YOU CANNOT COMPLETLEY ELIMINATE PEOPLE POSTING MESSAGES THAT ARE SOMEWHAT UNETHICAL, DEGRADING AND VILE! YOU CANNOT STOP PEOPLE FROM QUARELLING, FROM THROWING HARSH WORDS! AND SO FORTH. THEREFORE, WE JUST HAVE TO LIVE BY IT. It's bad (of course) but is there a way to stop it?

It is like stopping crimes to happen in Philippines. Even though you put all those rules, violations, laws, death penalty, etc... YOU CANNOT COMPLETELY STOP CRIMES! Why? maybe because we lack discipline, self-control or other words that describe a wholly person. But it all adds up to the truth that WE CANNOT STOP IT because WE CANNOT, THAT IS THE FACT!

I cannot tell how to stop it and either how to stop BAD MESSAGES from appearing in this forum. Because if I do, it's like I know how to stop things from happening and that is impossible and maybe YOU CANNOT TOO! (well except perhaps you are Einstein or a rocket scientisT or maybe GOD).

I am sorry to say that things aren't well in this forum. But proud to think that LOTS OF PEOPLE DO CARE. I am not a pessimist and a villain but honestly - I DON'T THINK YOU WILL NOT GET WHAT YOU DESIRE FOR THIS FORUM. But hey, I am not that bad I still wish "you" (PEOPLE WHO CARE) all the luck and hope that "you" succeed (somehow) from your quest of a civil environment. And perhaps even though you cannot get the best result atleast I think THERE WILL BE AN IMPROVEMENT!

This forum is unique, a one of a kind case where you can not fully regulate forthcoming posts...but we all know that. Such is expected from any "showbiz" thread --- ei that's entertainment!

BUT, the issue at hand is not about the WHATS (speculations, opinions, etc)...but the HOWS (respectful, brutal, vulgar etc).

The "whats" are expected, but the manner by which some pexers express themselves MUST be regulated. Since our dear moderator is absent, we are hoping that other moderators would take charge.

Goodthing the Admin banned some notorious pexers...but not after the thread...errr...battle ground I must say, reached page 3 or 4. They could've closed the thread much earlier and banned the pexers before they could wage anymore word wars and gain more enemies.

Banning the usernames and closing the thread before reaching the height of unethical posting, must (hopefully) be consistent. It would serve as a lesson for pexers to behave; that if and when horns and tail start to grow out of them...the moderators/admin would surely take action.


Call me strict...it's okay :D But I still think constant monitoring in this forum is a MUST.

Honestly I am ashamed at how much this site has gone downhill. I see immaturity, lack of intelligent reasoning and a lot of hate. Back in the days this was a place for educated fans to discuss their opinions regarding celebrities and their idols. There have been haters since the start but not as rude as we have today like the fans of Jolina Magdangal. They even made alternative nicks like JunMagdangal, RICAperalejo, JolinaMagdangal etc… just to fool people and confuse us. Today I find it a rare occasion that somebody should read a thread without offensive, uncalled, disgusting and disturbing comments most made by Jolina fans.
Comments like ‘getting f.ucked by ABS CBN people’, and ‘She’s overused’. Don’t get me wrong I am certainly not blaming you people as a whole but for the really hateful ones they should start cleaning their act and respect Rica as a human being and her family the way they respect themselves and their families. We all know that this site is just a little place on the internet. The e-mail that I posted regarding Rica's relatives in the US was a true email from somebody. It was not a trick or a catch...he really e-mailed me because he is concerned that napagbibintangan si Rica. If that bothered you, I'm sorry. I didn't post that para asarin ka but to clear Rica's name. I knew you are not Rica so I posted that, but unfortunately you took it negatively. The e-mail also didn't confirm that the usernames are from Rica's relatives...but still you never stopped.

I'm sure a lot of people will agree with you that this thread MUST be cleaned...but you have to do your part too...START FROM YOURSELF and THEY WILL FOLLOW.

For the past week I have been the most talked about poster here and in other words I suddenly became controversial. I have to admit my mistakes but you have to understand my situation and feelings too. I am a fan of both Rica and Claudine. I admire those two but not idolizing them and to the point that I will put them at the center of my life. I wasn’t the one who started this sh!t up. I was a regular poster here (I have an old nick) and everything was amazingly all right until this one poster made a thread about Rica’s mom, the title of the thread is “At least hindi nag bold si Jolina Mommy Alice” or something like that. I was pissed off when read that crap. I decided to pay back at those Jolina fans and throw back their sh!t. Luckily I won the battle (you know I did) and I have reached my goal. I pissed most Jolina fans off. That’s all I have to say. Again I’m sorry if I have offended some people.

Moderators, aren't you here to MODERATE? The posters have turned cynical amd adversarial. No longer the healthy exchange of ideas that other threads have.

The posts are degrading and embarrassing. Imagine, using the name of Jun Magdangal, Bernard Palanca, Rica P, Jolina and Alice to post derogatory remarks about "themselves"? Isn't this against the law? PEX can be accused of libel and defamation of character if they keep on tolerating this behavior.

I think the posters are not to blame anymore. They have found a venue where no one is stopping them to be mean and cruel. The ball is in PEX's court. Stop them or let them be.

In one push of a button, you can close a thread, ban a user and even delete messages. How come these never happen?

This is a very late reply to a very old thread, but I figure, why not...

Does this forum support a "whitelist" as opposed to a "blacklist"?

My idea goes something like this:

1. Only nicks that are on the whitelist are unmoderated and allowed to post without restriction.

2. Posts made by nicks not on the whitelist are moderated and must first be approved before they are published.

I think this will result in less work for moderators, since you would only add nicks to the whitelist if they have proven themselves to be contributing PExers who observe the house rules.

Also, there's only a finite number of PExers who deserve to be on the whitelist. It is therefore conceivable that moderators will eventually be able to add everyone who deserves to be on the white list to the list.

This approach eliminates the problem of irresponsible PExers coming back with an infinite combination of alternicks, since they would have to first earn the right to get on the whitelist before their posts become unmoderated.

If we go by the definitions above, everyone is now unmoderated. This is the best way we know to encourage participation while optimizing the use of moderator time.

If you want a moderator to read and every post before it becomes readable by the rest of the community, discussions here will stop. Not just slow down, but stop. That is because all the moderators will be overwhelmed by the stuff they have to read. To get results from this method, you would have to pay them - a lot. Enough money for them to abandon their existing livelihood and work full time for PEx.

You can start with me. How much can you afford? ;)

Besides, I think you should consider that a society of intelligent people works best when more minds are functioning. When you entrust control to a strong authority figure, nabobobo ang mga mamamayan. Umalis na po ang mga Kastila at namatay na si Marcos. Tingnan ninyo ang gobyerno natin. Lahat na yata ng trabaho sa kanila ibinigay. Lahat na rin ng kapalpakan sa kanila sinisi. Huwag na po nating i-asa ang lahat ng pagbabago sa mga namumuno, dahil may kakayahan at pananagutan tayong lahat.

Hi KuyaDanny -- My apologies... I did not mean to imply that the volume of work required to moderate a forum of this size is trivial.

Like the vast majority of PExers, I am very much appreciative of the work done by the moderators here. In fact, I often feel that being a moderator is a thankless job -- people do not appreciate you enough when you do your job well, and they are quick to criticize when things aren't perfect. I can relate to your predicament somewhat, since I moderate over a dozen mailing lists of my own.

I thought only to share my suggestion above because I had tried using the "blacklist" approach before on my own lists, and found that it doesn't work too well. The most effective approach I ever found was the concept of a "whitelist", where people on the whitelist are unmoderated.

As you've pointed out already, it probably won't work here either due to the sheer volume.

Again, my apologies, and more power to you and other moderators here at PEx.

We have noticed lately the growth of threads regarding Chinovelas/Chinese shows, in both the Local TV and International TV sections of the Entertainment boards here.

Since such topics have grown considerably after the "Meteor Garden" phenomenon, I feel that a separate section should now be created solely to handle such threads.

I am a regular contributor to the Entertainment Forum of Tsinoy.com Forum. I just learned from them that it will now take some time for them to upgrade their servers. Meaning, people like us will be "homeless" for sometime. In the meantime, people that depended on my reviews of Chinese shows because they don't have such programs on their cable TV, will be at a loss if my request here will not be granted.

I posted in their forum regularly because it has the most comprehensive Chinese show topics that I can easily relate with other like-minded forumers.

Hopefully our request will be given consideration very soon, after I noticed that your site has stabilized somewhat in terms of volume. Thank you.
