Which companies pay their employees best not just in terms of pay but bonuses and perks? Not just when you start but also consider when one goes up the corporate ladder.

I heard Proctor and Gamble (told to me by a friend who works there) pays really well; perks and bonuses are really good, too, and there is a large opportunity for promotion.

Thing about P&G, you work like a dog (daw). Same thing with Citibank (daw). You grow old really fast. But they pay well, and they have lots of other extra stuff.

The best paying companies are still the regional companies or the multinationals. HongKong Bank's management trainees, Pioneer Allianz's regional employees, Shell, Bane - grabe yung mga starting salary.

Well for those in the ISP field... wait till more overseas ISP's come in!

Starting a new company without shelling capital and getting funding isn't bad either :)

Of course, the companies who pay well will work you like a dog. Makes sense, doesn't it?

If *you* were paying the salary, wouldn't you want to get your money's worth?

AteRonee

You may work "like a dog" in many of these multinational companies but you also learn a lot more. One is typically given more responsibilities early on in one's career and in this sense, yes, one "grows old" faster than most of his/her peers. But this also increases your marketability in the job market.

Ace McStar: In the IT industry, the bigger more established consultancy firms pay really well. Like Andersen, James Martin, IberPacific and Unisys. These companies also send their employees abroad for more training and/or send their employees back to school like AIM.

Ya. I agree. Proctor & Gamble pays very well. I think give a minimum of 20T. They also have a thing as 14-15 month pay!

Ira is correct. You have to work very very hard... I would term is as working like carabaos. NOt to mention relationship with colleagues - it is a very very tough working environment, and the competition is very very high. It is like dog-eat-dog thingy... My friend who is working there told me that you really have to know how to BITE before you can be recognized and before you go up the corporate ladder!!!

If salary and benefits are important to you, the P&G is the place for you. However if you are not used to "biting" other people, then you might think twice. A friend of mine is graduating in La Salle. She is already accepted in P&G. But because of the dog-eat-dog thingy she refused the job...

Ganon talaga.

So...what is the PAY in numbers for these best paying companies? Any of these companies offering stock options?

Moody Meh, is dat 20T per week for P&G?

Apr 24, 2000, 12:07 AM
Well, I work for P&G =) and while I won't comment publicly about the compensation (suffice it to say it's very competitive), I will say that the culture and working environment there are among the best I've seen. Different people have different styles -- but in the four years I've been there, I have seen many more people thrive through collaboration than a destructive kind of competition. What I like best is that people are measured based on performance and results, not on who you know or how you talk to them.

To all the new grads out there looking for a job: take it from me, culture is MUCH more important than compensation.

Here is a link to a Salary survey from the March 2000 edition of Asiaweek...just to give you an idea how much you should be "compensated" by the best paying companies in the Philippines.

counter-question... why would you work for a company that does not offer such starting salaries (like our company, we don't or can't)

what_a_guy
Apr 30, 2000, 09:13 PM
mparaz,

Do you have a choice?

I don't know the answer but I am interested on what fellow PEXers have to say about the situation there in PI.

mparaz
Apr 30, 2000, 09:23 PM
Do you have a choice? well work abroad then?

I would think that the low-ness of Philippine salaries as compared to US/other countries salaries is due to the lower costs and revenues of everything.

Maybe we should compare the percentage of salaries/wages as to the company's revenue, between Philippine and other companies.

Since the multinationals earn or have budgets in US$, they can have higher salaries.

The best could be to have an expat's salary but stay in the Philippines and earn in a US$-based range.

[ Disclaimer: This is obviously not my field, I'm just guessing. ]

Hi Migs!

Theoretically -- I would work for a much lower starting salary if I had equity. The ownership stake and increased ability to make a real difference (say, in a startup or small firm) is something I would find attractive. If that translated into stellar business results, then I'm sure we could more than make up the initial compensation loss in the long run.

I guess it depends on how much risk you're willing to take and how entreprenurial you are (and how much you believe in the company).

Bain and Company is an elite global consultancy services firm. They usually interview only cum laudes and up from Ateneo and perhaps from UP and usually take 1 per year. Starting is P90,000 per month plus perks including housing in HK where you will be based and if you are good you could be assigned to one of their US offices within 2 to 3 years and make P5M yearly.

To learn more about the company, go to: www.bain.com (http://www.bain.com)

Hmmmm...I guess you can count Bain and company out of the list since they are not based in Manila, Philippines. The chances of getting an offer is very slim. If it is based in HK and they are taking the brightest mind from Ateneo or UP, I think they should be paying more than 90K/month..it should 1.5X that amount plus the housing allowance. My 2 cents.

After hearing endless claims about how much money you can make from MLM's in PI, and comparing it to how much money the companies listed here are paying, would you folks consider the MLM's like Amway, NuSkin, FLP, SkyBiz "ONE" of the best paying companies ??

They said you can make up to 900K/month after maybe about 4 years. Some of the reps make about 150K to 200K per month. A couple who just started makes about 20K per month.

Go to pharmaceutical/insurance companies. Very liberal benefits (kasi mababa ang operational costs nila tapos sobrang laki ng kita!)

The company where I used to work for pays us a total of 18.5 months/a year including bonuses and profit sharing, excluding fringe benefits (e.g. free meals, transportation allowance, medical, etc. etc.) But the starting salary might not be that big (although tiba-tiba ka naman sa profit sharing tsaka Christmas!). Cannot name the company though 'coz I signed a confidential waiver.

About Bain and Company...

Bain DOES recruit from the Philippines continuously. There are no quotas whatsoever -- 2 years ago, they recruited three Philippine educated associate consultants (the entry-level position); last year, no one got in. Fact is, it is very, very hungry for candidates. Check out their website if you're interested...

Its pay is global and competitive with other strategy (not IT) consulting firms and investment banks. Suffice to say that it is very, very comfortable.

Secondly, Bainies (yes... that is the silly name by which Bain employees are called) are generally very mobile. During a typical tenure of 2-3 years, a typical consultant can expect to have significant work in 2-3 geographies (typically a combination of Manila, HK, Singapore, London, Sydney, and San Francisco). But this is highly variable.

Travel is both cool and brutal (usually both at the same time). Some people rack up 100 flights a year. And although they may see many different countries, they may only see the airport, client site, and hotel.

Hours are tough but managable. Typically 60 hours a week. Again, very variable.

The learning is great (very challenging work, very talented people, diverse industries and geographies) and the compensation is top notch (among the highest, increases very quickly, MBA scholarships worth P5M to top performers).

It does have it's price -- foremost being the control of time and and the high stress level.

I'm not exactly an expert about career life in Procter and Gamble but having many close friends there and being an intern once, let me give this a shot.

First, Procter & Gamble is one big company and the differences between the departments (brand vs. finance vs. sales/customer biz dev't vs. HR vs. MIS... and so on) is actually quite significant.

Second, P&G pays pretty high -- "all-in" starting salary is above 20K and grows at over 20% a year, I think.... BUT the big part about P&G is that the training and prestige it gives increases its employees' "market value." For example, five out of the six Filipinos who made it to the global strategy consulting firms (Bain and McKinsey) have had P&G experience (either full-time or interns).

Lastly, on the "politics" of P&G -- it definitely has its share but I don't think P&G is significantly worse off than similar companies. It may be more (people generally quite competitive, driven...) or less (coaching and personal development are pretty high corporate priorities and taken seriously).

Overall, a pretty nice job but the hours can be bad and the fact that they seem to be having a major reorganization and experiencing higher turnover nowadays (unconfirmed?) may be a red flag....

Again, all this is based on my 3 months in brand management and hearsay from some close friends and colleagues....

I have to admit I don't really know much about high-paying companies here at home.
Just one. I do know that WorldPort which is an IT Ortigas-based company starts WebMasters at P40,000. A friend of mine is the HR Manager.

Looks like all the money is in the IT business. To spin off, right now since I'm looking for a job, any compensation package above P15,000 sounds attractive. I've probably searched all the philippine job sites already, and it is hard to find a job. Anyone know any good openings for a future MS-IT graduate from Rockwell? hehehe
