View Full Version : On jobs: security before passion or passion before security?

I think the closest thing to my passion would be writing. I don't even need an audience for it, the mere fact that I finished a piece of work is fulfillment in itself. I want to be a writer, but not a starving one. Here's my dilemma. I have this job offer that sounds really appealing in financial terms (basic pay plus potential dollar commissions). I am tempted to take on this job for 6 months or until I earn a certain amount of money, whichever comes first. If I take on this job, I promise to stick with my plan. I don't want to become too greedy and forget about my other interests. That way, I would have a buffer fund (which will buy me reassurance if nothing else). Do you think it's a good idea to go on with it? I have this other prospect which might be more fun and creative, but I'm sure the pay is nothing compared to the first option. I also want to try it out, but what if there is no growth in it? At least with the high paying job, I can fulfill my creative urges in my personal time. With the fun job, I won't be able to get money elsewhere. Any advice?

are u a risk taker? if so go with what you really wanna do, you can never tell if you it will forever give you financial instability. i know some people who took the risk of being financially unstable as long as they do something they really want and later they were able to make good at it.

if you want to be more conservative about it, go and take the good paying job till you are able to save some money but give yourself a deadline on up to when you still stay. The danger in this case is if you get so comfortable with the growing pay and it will become difficult for you to leave despite the fact that you are unhappy.

after some time, you might regret the time that has passed which you can never bring back.

Was just thinking about this last night.

Why not do both?

During coffee last night, I was chatting with the owners of Lola's Cafe--- lovely place, you should visit. She said something that really struck me.

The restaurant was their PASSION business. They had some other businesses that provided their bread and butter, but the restaurant was what they really enjoyed doing. And the restaurant is actually doing well. It's been profitable a few years now.

There is a book called "Built to Last" by James Collins. In it he discusses that great companies are not tied down by the TYRANNY of the OR.

This should just as well apply to us. Why choose between PASSION and SECURITY? Why not look for BOTH?

I know easy for me to say, hard for you to do.

Think about it though.

May Angels smile upon you,
Joe

Watch the film "BASQUIAT" you might get inspiration from it, for that matter read also the book about michaelangelo buonarotti.

Personally i am a nurse but i have always wanted to be a lawyer now i am saving up. so that i can go back to school.

Passion unbridled is destructive, passion focused is creative energy unbound.

if you're a fresh grad, and your family isn't really poor and depending on you......i would suggest to see first where your PASSION leads you......after all, being young and unattached, you still have the luxury of switching jobs :) and sometimes, what you really love doing may even give you SECURITY........

SECURITY is usually sought when you already have a family to support and when you're not entirely young anymore.....
