OT is not "forced" but there are some companies wherein work hours are really long and people work late into the night. They get compensated by OT pay or for officers, higher monthly salaries. It really depends on the work environment where OT work is a norm.

As far as I know there is no such thing as a forced overtime for employees...

Ang alam ko discretion na nung employee if he/she wishes to render OT. It should not be taken against the employee kung ayaw niyang mag-OT.

Kayo, what are your thoughts about this...

You mean forced to work on saturdays? I used to work at a company which told me to take a paycut or hit the road (which is illegal by the way), and well you know, bad news travels really fast, people got word, and a concerned friend actually told me to give his friend a call. He's a lawyer who specializes in labor law. Nice guy daw. You can just chat on the phone and ask his advice for free. :)

His name is Stanley L. Tan.

So, if they're going to force you to work on Saturdays, and if most people in your office have already resigned or are in the process of resigning, then maybe it's a sign for you to move on.. Know your options first, and if not, see what you can do with your present situation. Know your rights! (I don't get a commission fee, G, so feel free to call the guy.) hehehe

Good luck, at oo, karamihan naman sa atin ay tao dito sa mundo.. :D

Overtime is optional, of course. Those who elect to work OT should get paid (except for members of management, who in theory, get paid to be managers 24/7). Those who choose not to work OT shouldn't be punished.

But consider this: if your officemates work OT and you don't, and if, by doing OT they get more things done than you do, who do you think will get a higher rating when eval time comes around?

I sometimes force myself to work overtime to get projects done, and I'm amenable to working the occasional Saturday if it's needed; but the moment you make it prerequisite for all employees, it becomes a different ball game. It's no longer a passionate labor of love for work, but a mandate which kills passion.

My boss is the coolest.

He asked me if I can work overtime and I told him I can't that night co'z I have to watch the Dawson's Creek season ender. I told him that it's the last episode and even if I can just ask somebody who watched it I'll always wonder how it ended.

My boss was intrigued, he watched it too and we ended up talking about it.

BTW, My boss is a 29 year old guy : )

my bosses never really believed in forcing us to work more hours than we are really willing to put in. however, if we really need to pull an all nighter just to finish a project on time, they ask us in a nice way, always giving us the choice not to work overtime if we have a good excuse. like bambigirl, cool talaga mga boss ko, sometimes if we need to throw a surprise party for an officemate, they're always in on the plan para walang conflict sa work sked :D

I recommend you buy a book on the Labor Code. They're available at Rex Book Store, or National Book Store. The nice thing about these kinds of books is that you not only get the law, you also get an explanation.

Nolledo is a good author. ;)
