I am in the financial advisory business, and I charge my clients one of three rates, depending on the client and the job that needs to be done:

1) Very expensive;
2) Whatever the client can afford; or
3) Free

When do I charge rate 3? When the job is fun, when the people are fun, or when the engagement will lead to more business in the future.

So, to answer the question, YES, I would (and do) work for free.

For Software Quality Assurance , no..
My work involves too much time and effort and I dont think I would be able to live if I do not charge anything..

But there are cases where I do something for free.. like when I do the consulting for an
information system for a friend.. I sometimes do not charge especially if he or she is a friend.

And if for example the QA is for a game software.. then I may not charge.. :D

i used to do 'volunteer' work for an average of 4 hours a day, 6 days a week....for 4 years :) because i loved counseling and peer facilitating :)

and i think i can do it again, provided i can find myself a benefactor......

I'm an online volunteer for NetAid (http://www.netaid.org) helping out the Children-at-Risk Foundation in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Doesn't take too much time, around three-four hours a week. Not much work lately either because the Brazil-based coordinator is having some problems with electricity and the phone, two components crucial to online collaboration. I'm also a volunteer expert at AllExperts (http://www.allexperts.com), and I always get a high from the messages of thanks from computer users I manage to help out.

As to other work, yes, I'd do it for free, if I enjoyed it enough. In many cases, psychic income can make up for the monetary. Like, does buying a new phone every three months really make sense? However, I'm not independently wealthy, and I do have bills to pay.

Nowadays, if you need to switch industries and pick up some skills, you could apply for practicum at companies. The companies would then be happy to take you in since they won't spend on your salary.

Most people work for money. That's how a lot of people think.

The rich make their money work for them.

Today, I work not because I have to or need to.

I work because I want to.
