Within the last couple of years, the brands that come to mind are Bionade (SMC), Fit(P&G), Fresh and Ripe (LTDI) and Rain Malt Soda (SMC). I'll try to think of more later.

Peace.

You might want to take a look at Crest toothpaste. Once (it might still be) the most popular toothpaste brand in the US. But P&G, somehow, could never make it succeed in the Philippines.

The Firestone tire brand, which turns 100 years old this year, is in danger. This brand has suffered through two major product recalls (one in 1978, another in 2000) in a market where brand loyalty is very weak. Experts doubt whether the brand (now owned by Bridgestone of Japan) can be saved because of the fallout from this year's product disaster.

While it may be too early to tell if the Firestone crisis is severe enough to permanently cripple the brand, there are some cases which point out that brands in crisis can be saved. The classic case, of course, is the 1982 Tylenol incident in which seven people died after taking poisoned capsules. The brand has bounced back and still dominates today.

Four other instances, as mentioned in the 16 October 2000 issue of Forbes Global magazine, are:

Gerber Infant Food - 400 reports of glass slivers inside baby food jars (1986) - no serious injuries; company accused media of exaggeration, did not recall the product, sued the state of Maryland, and boosted ad spending. Brand bounced back and dominates today.

Jack In The Box fastfood restaurants - E. coli bacteria in hamburgers blamed for three deaths (1993); company destroyed 90,000 kgs of hamburger meat and made financial settlements with victims, stockholders, suppliers, and franchisees, about $100 million worth. Sales have recovered and company has improved its food safety programs.

Perrier bottled mineral water - 13 bottles found to have traces of benzene (1990); company recalled 160 million bottles despite minuscule health risks. Perrier is now the largest bottled water company in the US (33% market share). The brand was so strong it couldn't be toppled.

Airtran passenger airline - a ValuJet DC-9 plunged into the Florida Everglades, killing 110 people (1996); company merged with little-known AirTran Airways and took its name, burying the ValuJet brand forever. AirTran turned a profit for the first quarter of 1999.
