What an appropriate moment to repost a story I got in my e-mail last Christmas.
HOW POOR WE ARE?
One day a father took his young son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose
to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and night at the farm of a
very poor family.
When they got back from their trip, the father asked his son,
"How was the trip?"
"Very good, Dad!"
"Did you see how poor people can be?"
"Yeah!"
"And what did you learn?"
The son answered,
"I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four."
"We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek
that has no end."
"We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars."
"Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon."
When the little boy was finishing, his father was speechless.
His son added, "Thanks Dad, for showing me how poor we are!"
Isn't it true that it depends on the way you look at things? If you have:
1. Love
2. Friends
3. Family
4. Health
5. Good Humor
6. A positive attitude toward life.....
You have got everything.

Like KD, I am rich in many other things but not money. I paid for the A4 over 4 years and the A8 I just started leasing as a used 3 year old car. I figured that since the A8 lease was based on a cost that was 50% of the original cost of the car, the deal couldn't be beat for the money. Especially since the A8 hasn't changed substantially in the last several years - still a great car though with a 4.2L 300hp engine and the quattro driveline. The bottom line is it didn't take a lot of money to get both cars.
Anyway, there are other people here who have nice cars too though I'm not sure they can be called the richest - Sinned if I recall used to say he drove an Audi TT and Rockgardner I believe drives a Jaguar XKR.

whoops! sorry there... didn't mean to sound like i was laughing at you. Peace?
Anyway, i guess, that just shows how ignorant some of us are when equating wealth with the materials we possess, in utter disregard of the circumstances in which they've been aqcuired. You'll probably agree however, that the public display or declaration of one's assets will always be subject to scrutiny and whatever prejudices and pre-judgements that come with it.

Nope you aren't wrong. We were discussing importation of cars in that thread and yes I did mentione something about importing brand new cars, bimmers in particular. The bimmer wasn't for me personally though.
You are right about wealth being far more than material assets. Actually, health is far more important. I like driving and the A8 has given me much enjoyment. As you can see, I got a used one as I wanted to stretch my buck as much as I could. I also didn't want a commonplace car easily identified by everyone on the street and that's why I didn't get a 7 series bimmer, a jag or a lexus ls400.

Rich in what? What are we measuring.... love, faith, finance, family, friends?
How do we measure that? You will never consider yourself rich because there will always be someone else who is more rich than you.... and then your standards raise.
I am rich in love because I have alot to give and receive... faith because I believe in God... finance because "GREED IS GOOD!"... family because they support me... friends because they guide me...
Does this make me the richest? Perhaps... until we find someone else richer.

"So please, before you accuse us of stabbing our country in the back try and figure out what the real deal is. We love our country equally I think but I also have to consider my family, my career and my happiness. No it isn't about the money - in the past month I've been offered jobs that where I would have made upwards of $500,000 annually (much much more than what I make in the job I hold and like a lot) but I didn't hesitate to turn these people down. Similarly my wife has recently turned down offers that would have doubled her present salary. I feel we are where we should be at the present time. ANd we both have no regrets about the decisions we have made".

1. still working very hard to make my stock options worth something someday.
2. Hopefully, my next startup gig will be in a bio-tech company.
If these two (2) things happen, I might even retire sooner. Nine years 'til retirement, and counting...

Cool thread. Money can't buy you love but it sure makes life easier
No, I'm currently not and never was rich by any stretch of the imagination (I remember buying rice for our family per kilo and have to choose the middle.. C4? variety to make ends meet) but somehow I feel I didn't miss out on the good things life has too offer. There is always someone less fortunate than you (if you think you're poor):bawl: in the same way that someone will always be richer. Maybe not Bill Gates so scratch that. :weg:
If anything, hard times has built my character and have learned to appreciate the good times more. I hope they keep rolling
If not, its comforting to know that whatever happens, i can always say been there, done that :enlightened:
BTW, I'm also planning to retire my present backbreaking job by 35-40 and hopefully try a more fun job :naughty:
Peace..Out :wolv:

Ako naman YUPPIE din (Young Urban Poor).
Lets have a formal definition of RICH and WEALTHY muna right?
Rich = net worth of over a million
net worth = assets - liabilities
(assets do not include non-sellable assets such as your shoes, clothes and stereo)
From "The Millionaire Next Door", the nominal definition of 'wealthy' is the following equation:
net worth >= annual income*AGE/10
this means that you must have saved or converted into assets at least 10% of your present income, for each year of your life.
this also means that 'wealthy' is in the context of one's age and income.
for example. if pedro is a 40yr old farmer who earns P10,000/yr, and he has a net worth of P50,000, he is considered wealthy, because a person of his age and income usually only has a net worth of P40,000.
if juan is a 30yr old yuppie who earns P500,000/yr and has a net worth of P1M, he is not considered wealthy. This is because a person of his age and income should at least have P1.5M net worth.
