View Full Version : Does your JOB match your COLLEGE DEGREE?

I've been a Marketing Assistant for a Bank, a high school teacher, a Business Development Associate for a start-up internet company, and hey.. that's pretty close to being a Communications Major.. although sometimes I think that I didn't learn anything in College..
What course did you take, what jobs have you taken since, and is your career going the way you planned?
(Talk about triple barreled questions.. supposedly a no-no in doing interviews..)

Computer Science from Ateneo. I've been in only one company, but have held four positions.
I've done CS-related work before (operating systems and programming), but the technical work I do now is more ECE-related (IP networks). I also do some management-related tasks though I have no formal training in that.

Hudyat,
Anong batch ka ba? Ako COMM batch 97. Saan na kaya batch mates ko? Na-i-insecure nga ako sa course natin eh.. parang generic siya.. wala masyado akong natutunan doon actually.. parang IS (Interdisciplinary Studies) na rin hehehe (sorry IS dudes!)
Kaya ngayon, bumabawi ako sa Masters in IT. Hehehe. Enjoy! Kailangan kong gumawa ng Java Calculator by tom, at Data Flow Diagram by Thursday.. hehehe!

You know what they say, start early. :)
My experience has been confined mostly to my high school (back in 1996) and currently in the dorm. As for the small-time programming, I occasionally find challenges (currently, I'm doing an intranet chat program). Sometimes, I do it for friends or relatives, or their friends.
I've pretty much outlined my programming experience in What did you make with your Programming Languages? (http://www.pinoyexchange.com/Forum9/HTML/000771.html).
As for "PC Technician"… well, let's just say there should be at least one in every batch. I just like to tinker and troubleshoot other people's computer problems. :)

Batch 99, pero rinig ko, nagiimprove na daw ang Comm Dept. They got too many complaints from the students that its not really applicable to real life. Oh well... at least sa batch namin, may mga 3 to 5 yata na wala ding kaugnayan ang trabaho sa Comm.

yeah.. some weren't that applicable. I liked Fr. Nic's Com 107 classes, Sev's Public Relations Class, Robby Galang's Com 100, but some others were just horrible.
***** man. Objectively speaking, Moderators, Mr. Noel McRae sucked @SS. Halfway through the middle of our second term (mga December na, ha???) inamin niya na HINDI PA NIYA BINABASA ANG THESIS NAMIN.. and to think siya yung Thesis Adviser namin at marami na kaming na-submit na drafts..!

My cousin who took College in the States in St. Mary's in California, and his MBA from Berkeley, says that in his words:
"I'm not out to convert anyone, I'm just calling things as I see them. I am, after all, a Recruiter. I see HUNDREDS of resumes a week. A Masters degree (Unless it's from Stanford, Harvard or Yale) is worth just the two inches of space it takes up in a resume. Sad but true.
I'd rather hire someone who spent a few years making things happen for a company.
Furthermore, he goes on to say that:
Education does NOT matter as much anymore. Sorry to burst the parental bubble but it's true. Fact is I will hire someone with experience over education 9 times out of ten and twice on Sunday. Conclusion: Finish College, screw Grad school, go straight to working on a career.
Amen.
So how do you get a job if you don't have experience, and how do you get experience if you don't have the right education?
You've stumbled on the trick of the question: How to get started.
That, my friend, is where most of the energy should be invested in. Learn on your own, Intern, apprentice, shadow someone, work for free to get experience, volunteer? It just kills me... KILLS ME... that my years of Graduate school means NOTHING and that my short two year stint at AirTouch got me my job now.
For someone who's taking up my masters right now in IT, this doesn't sound too good for me, and I don't know whether to agree or not. On one hand, it makes practical sense, on the other hand..what am I taking my masters for??

We are totally responsible for what we are and where we are. My background is metallurgical engineering. My first job was in computer programming because I wanted it. Then I realized I wanted my own business, so I got a job as a sales engineer for a steel manufacturing multinational, then a short management stint with a small trading company that has to do with mining, then I set up my own trading company. What I do is related to my course, and its a choice I made.

And I thought we went to college to prepare us for the real world? I graduated from AdMU and all my five years studying chemistry and computer engineering, I never thought of leaving my course - I thought liked it; even since high school pa ako. I thought, at least when the time comes, I could still choose whether it'd be the CE or Chem anyway.
But, I understand that some people if not most would rather stick to IT, which is far away from their degree, mainly because the "action is there" and the money flows in IT - nowhere else.
If Albertt thinks that he's company is paying him good enough, I think he's better off with his current company than stick it out with his original degree. Many others would have also took the chance in IT.
Sometimes, I think that I have wasted my college years in something I really like and not practising it after college. I said to myself, I should have taken an easy course, bum around and still get high grades than break my skull reading and learning Physical Chemistry and Quantum Mechanics and not using them after college.
Well, past is past... but I keep on thinking about it.
Hmmm, makapag-turo na nga lang!

I graduated with a Computer Science degree at DLSU and now I'm a Senior Software consultant.
It matched and I thank my teachers for teaching me SYANADE and database diagrams. Kahit hindi ko trip iyon noong college, I'm learning its value now.

CNNfn publishes the Working Your Degree (http://cnnfn.cnn.com/markets/personalfinance/career/degree.html) series every Friday. The articles examine career options for different college majors. While the examples mentioned are drawn from the US, there are many parallels with our own environment.

What course did you take, what jobs have you taken since, and is your career going the way you planned?
I finished my Economics degree back in 1992.
Worked for a bank for 7 years, as an HR Analyst.
Bank merged with others after that. My job was still with HR.
Now, I moved on to another company, having a higher position, but still with HR.
Can someone help me relate Economics to HR?
I'm not complaining, I like the job (it's the work I hate,,, hehehehe) but people keep asking me, "Paano ka napasok sa HR eh Econ ka naman..?"

The recent data from the National Statistics Office reveal a whopping 11% unemployment rate in the country. It is equivalent to several millions of Filipinos without jobs. Maybe you would ask, why would there be so many unemployed when there are a lot of job vacancies on the papers every Sunday? Well, the jobs are not just enough for the growing number of people who needs to work as proven by the graduating students every year.
Everybody needs to work and earn a decent living. The difficulty in landing on a job that is related to your college degree has forced many to take on jobs that are not related to their courses.
So I ask you, IS YOUR JOB RELATED TO THE DEGREE YOU GOT IN COLLEGE?

For me nope. I graduated with a double degreei in Business and Banking in the university, and look at me now, I'm a System Engineer for a financial institution here in Tokyo. Well I guess the company I'm working for is the only link with my course, but other than that.. ang layo! I wish though I graduated sa compsci. Would have made my life easier. :) But as my boss once said, when it comes to money, you need to study it, when it comes to computers, you just need to love it in order to be good at it. :)

I forgot my answer.
Yes, it is related. I am currently a researcher and I graduated with an Economics degree. Pero I'd love to study computer-related courses para madaling yumaman! hehehe :-)
