Hi gutsy doll, etc.:
I know this is off topic, but I guess it's even just a wee bit related, so I will press the issue just a wee bit. Why not train in traditional yet combative Filipino martial arts of kali, arnis or escrima? They involve not just weapons training and fighting, but also EMPTY HANDED striking, boxing, trapping, low line kicking, chokes, submissions, holds, chokes and throws, limb destructions, breaks, etc.
Please take the time to visit www.pekiti-tirsia.net and also www.TexasKali.org for info on the really cool style of arnis/kali that we practice, Pekiti-Tirsia kali, perhaps the most combative and most combat-realistic of all arnis styles out there in the country and all over the world. No empty boasting there, now. It is taught regularly to US special operations personnel who join the Balikatan exercises at Cavite by GM Leo Gaje and his students.

They teach boxing too at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center inside Ateneo.

I've looked at the website and it seems like a really difficult sport. Although it seems very interesting, but with my frame, baka hindi ko kakayanin. I may be adventurous, but parang scary yung sport. It's like a mixture of wrestling, arnis and boxing rolled into one! And I'm impressed that it originated from dito sa atin. Where's the gym located so Ican just see how the classes go...

That's good, at least nearer than Makati. I'll drop by there within the week to inquire, or if by chance, would you have their number? :)

Gutsy, there's also some boxing AND kickboxing at the Defense Tactics Center along EDSA between Camp Crame and Ortigas Avenue (very near the Kalayaan People Power monument at the corner of Camp Aguinaldo and Katipunan Avenue extension). The teacher of boxing there is an Elorde boxing instructor, and there's also kickboxing care of the legend himself, Master Henry Kobayashi (of Yaw-Yan). Just call 726 1980. I'd try some Yaw-Yan myself soon.:D
If you want a good workout that's more applicable to self-defense than pure boxing (since it would have to include kicking, grappling, trapping, some weapons, etc.), you can also take up Sari-an right there at the DefTac center I just mentioned above.
As for the Pekiti Tirsia, it's NOT a combo of wrestling, arnis, and boxing. It's PURE arnis from Negros Occidental, of the traditional blade-oriented variety. I agree, it does look kinda scary but the training for beginners isn't (although it's a GREAT workout talaga; I almost fainted the first day as I was sooo out of shape). The empty handed kicking and striking stuff you saw there on the websites is from Pekiti Tirsia arnis weapon techniques translated merely into empty handed stuff. Although I'd concede there's some Pentjak Silat influence in Pekiti Tirsia since our GM studied Pentjak Silat for some time to explore the similarities between Silat and the empty handed stuff of arnis.
We train in the outdoors of UP Diliman on weekends.

Thanks so much for all the contact details :D I tried boxing sa Elorde sa Sucat yesterday and sobrang ok. Distance lang problema. But now that I've tried it na, most likely dito ka sa one of the gyms that you guys suggested.
*Whew* Thanks again! I'll keep you updated!

I just tried boxing sa Elorde in Sucat Php. 150 lang per session. Mga veteran boxers ang nagtuturo. Pero, masyadong malayo for me. Most likely I'll be taking it up sa Moro or at the Defense Tactics Center. Thanks for all the replies!

Why not train in kali (arnis) instead? And thus shoot two birds with one stone? We train weapons first (rattan sticks, then hardwood sticks, then blades) including knives, and throw in the traditional EMPTY HANDED striking (boxing and kicking) aspects of arnis, such as eye jabs, hammerfists, bottomfists, backfists, punches, hacks, wrist hacks, elbow strikes, knee strikes, and low line kicks, stomps, and sweeps?
