I can probably speak for myself. The reason why I love basketball so much is that it showcases the many creative talents of its players. The action if fast and hard-hitting, unlike such slow moving sports as golf, chess, etc ... And unlike other team sports, like Soccer (the world's current most popular) Ice Hockey, and Football, the scores are much higher, ensuring that something is always happening on the court, and not just the ball going back and forth repeatedly.
Finally, basketball can be played almost anywhere. Just try driving through all those narrow streets in Manila and you''ll find a number of people shooting hoops on a makeshift ring stuck to a telephone post.

Bakit nga ba?! The only time I really got into the PBA was during the Anejo/Purefoods rivalry back in the late 1980s and only because it was all my classmates ever talked about.
The UAAP is another matter though. Cheering for your alma mater is understandable, but for your hotdog brand!?

First, it's one of the easiest sports to learn and understand. Second, like nix said, it's a sport that requires creativity. However baduy it may sound, for me, dribbling, passing, and shooting the ball on the court is like stroking a paintbrush on canvas (ngek! you really have to be a real baller to agree with this). Third, it's one of the most graceful sport to watch. And fourth, it builds camaraderie.. i have made so many friends from playing ball, and i'm not just talking about past teammates, opponents too.

i guess the answer to that is the fact that we're not exposed to other sports like soccer, baseball, etc. i guess the reason to that is because the philippines doesn't have enough funds in order to build and support baseball fields, soccer fields etc. Since basketball is not that expensive, it has been a common/favorite sports of many Filipinos.

maybe its because the action is fast paced. and another reason could be the fact that the sport itself is so accessible to so many people. i mean, it takes so little space and is relatively cheap. theres a basketball court in almost every corner here. even if its just a makeshift hoop (fashioned out of the rim of a paint can stuck to the wall with a nail). i've seen people use anything from tennis balls to those toy basketballs a little bigger than a tennis ball.
try putting up a soccer field in the middle of a slum area...

i cld only speak 4 myself... i don't play the sport. i tried playing it but i just can't. but i love watching basketball esp. the PBA basically bcoz it's the only sport that i actually grew up with. our entire household watches the games on TV... ppl are playing basketball on the streets... kids at school play it... family members play basketball as a form of exercise... sa sports section ng newspapers, headline ang basketball... e how cld u not be hooked to this sport? how all this came to be is another story though.

Because it's the cheapest ball game available. You don't need a ref., poste lang na may ring at bola katalo na. Also you don't need uniform. 'Yung isang team nakahubad, yung isa nakadamit. Pwede rin nakapaa o naka tsinelas lang.

this is very true:)... apart from it being a really exciting game, there is an economic aspect to its popularity...
...it is really one of the cheapest in terms of equipment... in poor communities, 1 cheap ball and a ring na naka-pako sa poste is enough to provide for the sports needs for a big number of people:eek:...
... just like other team sports, it also serves a number of psycho-social functions because it's an easy way to feel you're part of something... it also lacks the pressure of individual sports where u and u alone are responsible for your success or failure (take note that i'm not saying na walang pressure ang basketball, all i want to point out is iba ang pressure kapag nag-iisa ka lang) :)...

Because we inherited it from the 'Americans'

Other than that, with the help of MICAA, ang kaisa-isang professional leagues of any sport dito sa Pinas, kaya nag-flourish ang basketbol sa Pinas.

Why I believe basketball is popular in PI:
It's American influenced. Many Pinoys worship anything American.
It requires little equipment. You only need a ball and a hoop and little space.
It's indoor - ideal to escape the outdoor heat in our tropical climate.

Why not you guys try watch and play flag football, soccer, and baseball/softball and not just basketball? Watch not just PBA but NBA, MLB, and NFL as well.
If you guys stick to just one or two sport, you will never know how fun learning and experiencing other worlds offering out there.
Who knows maybe you are good or talent to other sports other than basketball.

I heard you can buy an American football at Glorieta. You guys can play flag football anywhere. All you need is a ball and any place you want.
