View Full Version : Just as Arabs and Indians have distinct smell...do u know that Filipinos do also?

my friend told me that filipinos, in general, have distinct smell themselves. not that it smells foul or anything but it's really distinct. of course, we don't smell it ourselves because we've been immune to it. so the next time you go to other countries, probably they know by ur smell that ur a filipino.

i heard that too ... maalat daw tayo? baka it's the bagoong & the tuyo & the pulang itlog & the tapa, etc ...

It's very, very possible. It could all be just a matter of "conditioning".

I remember going to Smokey Mountain (when it was still a smelly place) before with my classmates during highschool. When we got down the bus, I almost puked. But after a few minutes (or was it hours?), I realized that I was getting the hang of it. It still STANK, but we were getting the hang of it.

We tend to generalize the smell of a race by sniffing the simpler half...or should I say, the masses. They say that caucasians do not smell good but when I went to the States...mmmmm, smells like fresh milk, well that goes for the better half.

I don't think "Filipinos" smell like bagoong in general.

I know this post is almost a whole year later, but my GF told me, maalat nga daw ang body scent ko. (Pag nag-vitamin C naman, umaasim ng kaunti.) Maybe there's something to that after all.

surprisingly, I don't think this thread is ridiculous at all....interesting....maalat tayo? maybe it's because of all the salty food (bagoong, tuyo, dilis, etc) we like to eat....pero if that's the case, do we smell like the Chinese too?

Yes. I think filipinos have a distinct smell. I used to stay at my friend's shop where kids would rent playstation games. And kakaiba yung amoy! Hindi amoy pawis or amoy araw. Basta kakaiba! I've smelled this also when I rent videos tapos may ibang tao na nandoon ... basta ... it's different! And not necessarily nice. Tsaka may certain types of people lang ... so ... baka hindi rin nga yun yung amoy na tinutukoy mo .. hehehe

totoo ba to? I have met some Filipinos who smell because they just do hahaha.. but generally Filipinos don't have that body odor like the arabo or whatever. Funny anecdote regarding this: My mom was seated in a three seater in a plane. a pakistani or indian guy sat between her and a filipino guy. she said he smelled so bad ("diyos mio, amoy putok!!! yung katabi naming pilipino, pa kunwari pang magtakip ng ilong sa sobrang baho."). Anyway, the filipino guy decided to put a handkerchief over his face (like a hold-upper) and was just about to sleep when the pakistani guy turned to him and said, "Why you put dat on your face?! What is your problem, huh?" filipino guy, "Aah, eh [looks at my mom], see when I sleep, my saliba falls. see? like this [shows the guy how his saliva falls]." :D

My Spanish Teacher(He's filipino who studied in Spain) said na yes, Filipinos have a distinct smell, its not fish or bagoong, but detergent, yes, sabong panlaba, its because we often take a bath, unlike other nationalities who do not take a bath regularly, he said that even in Spain, when the weather is too chilly, Filipinos still take a bath unlike others na natutulog a lang kasi malamig

I think most of use are salty because of the food we eat. But if we take a bath at least twice a day, that distinct smell will be lesser.

i guess that we do smell, but not like fish or something that the americans or europeans are saying, they are just being racist. they(most) look down on us. most of the time pag pumasok ako sa LRT even if it's still morning may amoy na. minsan mabaho, minsan ok.

Oo naman no! Filipinos have a smell too, di lang natin napapansin. I can say this kasi I take a bath everyday and three times pa so naiirita ako pag yung katabi ko ay............waaaahhhhh!!!!

Ayan ha, nilalait kasi natin silang amoy sibuyas at shawarma!

ngayon ko lang narinig ito! hindi naman siguro totoo. kung meron man talaga, ang masasabi ko lang, siguto lahat naman ng uri ng tao may amoy. immune na kasi ang mga kano sa amoy caucasian kaya akala nila may kakaibang smell ang Malay race. i've been to the Australia and U.S. na dominated by caucasians, wala naman akong naamoy sa kanila.

I have heard that we have a distinct smell, like fish and garlic. It must be the food that we eat, right?

well, I noticed the countries i've been to have a distinct smell.. and the people too.. must be the air. In the US, the air smells like that odor balikbayan boxes smell when you first open them.. mabango. In HK, it smells like the combination of fruits, longanisang macao, and sangke (spice), while in Malaysia, it smells like curry, and uhm.. putok. After being away from pinas for a long time, pag dating ko amoy intsik daw ako, while ako naman I noticed for a while (but soon got used to it and eventually did not notice it anymore) the air here has a faint trace of the odor the smokey mountain used to emmit.

Surprising, but you know what, I was in the elevator and I was with a black woman. She asked me - do you Filipinos cook a lot of fish? I was like, dumbfounded. Whatttt????? But before I could insult her, she left the elevator. I was about to ask her, "why would you say that?" I mean, I know I spend much on perfumes, and I really do think I smell kinda nice that day. In fact, I never leave the house without taking a bath, with nice smelling liquid soaps and shampoo.

Is it true???? :(

oo nga kung amoy isda, eh di ibig sabihin malansa tayo?? Alam ko Pakistanis and Indians do smell. Kase when I was still studying in Dubai, kapag Electives lipat kami sa ibang room, and ang natitira sa room namin mostly Indians and Pakistanis, pag balik sa room, as in whoooah! nakakahilo ang amoy. Ano naman amoy ng arab? They dont smell bad naman a, ang alam ko amoy nila, sobrang tapang na pabango.

Bad nga ako kase I sit behind a really smelly Indian classmate, eh bata pa ako nun, so I was really wondering kung bakit may amoy sya, sabi ko baka hindi nagpapalit ng damit. So sinulatan ko yung blouse ng uniform nya.
The next day she was still wearing it, and the next and the day after that, hanggang 2 weeks ata suot nya! Dont know kung more than that pa, basta nung a week after satisfied na ako, kaya mabaho sya kase hindi nagpapalit ng damit.

I guess its because of drinking so much tea. Kase there was also a time na madalas mag tea bf ko, same sila amoy nung mga chinese.

the smell they associate us with is probably the smell of our food getting on our clothes.

what i've learned is, do not wear the same clothes that you cooked or ate in to go out in public. And when cooking or eating, store your clothes where the smell will not permeate them.

actually, Filipinos are more hygeinic compared to Caucasians. I find it hard to believe that we have a distinct "scent". In fact, one of the reasons why Caucasians love Filipinas daw is because we smell good and we're "malinis sa katawan"

and about taking baths twice a day - apparently that's pre-hispanic. yung account dun sa isa sa mga spanish voyages to the philippines, tagalogs daw bathe in the river once in the morning and then in the evening after the day's work.

That's why the Spanish were appalled because bathing=touching themselves daw plus the fact that they bathe in the same river wearing "transparent" clothes. :glee:

Ok let's make it clear people that this thread is about "Fil. has distinct smell". And to CRUSH980400 and THE REST THAT AGREES, you are all WRONG. :silly:

First let's define DISTINCT (it indicates that something is DISTINGUISDED by the mind or eyes or nose as being apart or different from others).

For Arabs and Indians i agree (because they use their same basic spices (w/ strong curries and others that only their race's used) in foods but Filipinos basic spice is only (little of these things - w/c the rest of the races of people around the world's usesl) garlic, salt, pepper and the rest of the spices is cook's prerrogative. I had made a surveys from different people w/ different races, and NONE AGREES that we have particular smell that could relate us as being Filipino. :enlightened:

So those foriegners that comments base only from one person or from one family couldn't be generalize. GOT ME? :smokehead:

totoo yun may amoy tayong iba. it's what we ate everyday. tuyo, tinapa, pinakbet, burong talangka, durian, tilapia(malansa 'to), balut. i wasn't aware of it until i went off island and came back 5 yrs later. at ang sabi nila mabango daw ako. pero hindi naman ako gumamit ng pabango that time. tinanong ko naman kung anong amoy na naamoy nila. amoy mansanas at oranges daw. not bad pero fruit salad pala ang labas ko. dito na lang ako sa Pinas amoy beach pa lagi ako.:D

i agree that we have a distinct smell.

parang kapag nakatanggap ka ng balikbayan box from the states, di ba pagbukas merong kakaibang amoy? mabango?

my tito said that when they open a package or a maleta from the Philippines, it smells like tinapa even if there's no tinapa inside.

try to notice the smell the moment you arrive at the airport after a fairly long vacation in other countries... basta may kakaibang amoy talaga :)

If people say "distinct" smell does it mean body odor?

i think it depends on what a person eats and the smell of their home.

Chinese people, some of the ones i know, have a certain smell and I figured out it was the food they cook and eat, and the scent of their houses that the smell eminated from:lol:

same for anyone else!
