im pandak, as i said before...but both my parents r not, my siblings r also not maliit.
how can i grow taller? prescribed ba ang mag-take ng pills na pampatangkad. can stretching & jumping help ur bones to grow? a friend told me that kids (like me) should sleep 10 hrs a day para tumangkad. is it true? ;)
Ira

How old are you and what's your sex (M/F)?
Stretching and jumping will only help pag kuba ka in the first place. And there are no pampatangkad pills. :)

im 15/f and hindi kuba. wala ba talagang pampatangkad na pills? kse marami akong nakikita sa home tv shopping. totoo ba na pag nag-sleep ka 10 hrs a day mas mabilis daw tumangkad? diba pampataba lang yon?

wAgKaNgMaKuLiT: You're only 15, you still have a couple of years left before you reach your adult height. :) About the Home TV Shopping thing...all of the stuff they hawk there are snakeoil remedies. Don't waste your money on them. As for sleeping...the reason they say that sleeping helps you grow taller is because proper nutrition and good health are contributory factors in attaining your maximum height. However, your height is already pre-programmed in your genes. There is no magic pill that will make you taller than what you're destined to be. On a personal note, don't worry about the height--I'm also vertically challenged, but hey, there are more important things in the world. One positive thing is, you won't have any problems looking for a date taller than you. Plus, of course, your height will make you seem younger than you are. At my age, that is a definite plus!
Badgirl: There are rare instances that females still grow until 21, but chances are, you've reached your adult height already. Sorry! :)

Ira: what abt growth hormones?
batang uliran
Dec 14, 1999, 07:14 PM
The reason sleep helps when you are young because the secretion of growth hormone by the body is enhanced during this period. As an adult though, I wouldn't mess with it - It doesn't really work and I'm always wary of taking drugs that are liable to disrupt the body's tightly regulated hormonal system.
Ira

Addendum to BU's post: You can mess with GHs if you have this overwhelming desire to look like Andre the Giant. :)

Ira: ganon? eh ako pwede pa ba ako lumaki pag nag-sleep ako ng nag-sleep o hde na?
batang uliran: y wouldnt u mess w/ it? does it makes someone fat?
*i really need to grow taller... and... FAST!!!*
Ira
Dec 14, 1999, 09:23 PM
Since you're only 15, chances are you have a few inches of growing up left. If you're getting the right amount of sleep and your diet is generally healthy, you'll grow to the height you're destined to have, like I said. But unless you are severely malnourished, your growth isn't stunted in the first place, anyway. Don't worry about it. :) You still have a few more years.
As for GHs...its effects on adults and even on adolescents aren't pleasant. Excessive GH levels cause what is known as Gigantism (for kids), or Acromegaly (for adults). It's not going to make you look as fat as steroid intake does, but it's going to make you look really warped-looking nonetheless. You'll have excessively large hands, feet, and jaw. Your forehead is going to stick out. Your teeth are going to be widely spaced. Your skin will be coarse and oily. Even your internal organs will become extra large.
Those suffering acromegaly or gigantism also endure growth in height and weight way, way above normal standards, and that's not even half of it: You'll also develop nerve problems, bone enlargements, heart problems, increased risk for cancer, and problems with breathing. Anyway, forget about the growth hormone. Mabuti nang maliit na cute kesa sa higanteng pangit, di ba? :)
grumpy
Dec 15, 1999, 05:01 AM
acromegaly - lurch, the addams butler. now, do you really want to look like him? seriously, for the vast majority of kids, adult height is twice their height at age 2 or 3. or you could add your parents' heights together, divide by 2, and you get a predicted height for a girl. add 2.75 inches for a boy. that formula doesn't work in 10-15% of people though.
what's with the height thing, anyway? if you need a few more inches, ira will be HAPPY to lend you a pair of blahnik pumps.

grumpy: is that really an accurate calculation for a person's height? No kidding? So if i ever hope to have a kid in the NBA someday, i need to find a pretty tall partner then, correct? Umm.. paging Peps! paging Peps! hehehe
But seriously though, are you saying that the eventual height of a child strictly depends on his genes and has nothing to do with his nutritional upringing?

okay height nga ba ang usapan? i feel so sad about being a bit aged and then still have this height but i agree with you. it's not in the height! there are so much things that has to be looked upon! personality counts A LOT! kaya don't fear too much if your small. dibah ate Ira? giling naman diyan! hahaha!

Oops...didn't notice jepoy's question. Sorry!
Yes, that is an old, accepted formula used in pediatrics. We're not saying that nutritional upbringing does not contribute at all to your eventual height. On the contrary, I said in a previous post in this topic that it is also a factor. You've seen malnourished kids, right? They're usually small, because their growth have been stunted due to poor diet. HOWEVER, no amount of balanced diet will make you taller than what you're destined to be.

is there a possibility that you can still squeeze the supposedly stunted inches out of your body due to your previous poor nutrition? let's say you haven't reached your maximum height potential.
i have read about this chinese twins, one lived in china and had a poor diet of just rice and corn, and the other lived in the u.s. and had a totally different and healthy nutrition. the latter became 4 inches taller. i also read somewhere an interesting story about this 37-yr old woman who grows an inch every year, and is now a breakthrough case on growth stimulation. there is also this story about this nba player who grew taller when he joined the u.s. navy. new studies and research reveal that amino acids and some exercises play a vital role in stimulating our vertical growth.
some scientists even believe that there is something somewhere in our body that is just needed to be tapped to fulfill our maximum height. S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G makes a difference, some height studies also say.
if this is some sign of false hope, then let it not be for those who live in this small world.
§.
Ira
Dec 16, 1999, 10:08 AM
Sinned: About the squeezing thing, it would depend on your present nutritional status and your age. It's possible to catch up when you're a child, but once your bony epiphysis have fused (it's the part of your bone that is responsible for elongation/growth), there's really not much you can do about being vertically challenged.
About the Chinese twins thing, chances are the one in China had stunted growth, while the one in the US grew to his potential. I'm not quite sure about the 37 year old woman, because I don't know the details about it, so I won't comment. :) Maybe her epiphysis is still active.
As for stretching..it will make you taller because it improves posture. (Are we talking about the same thing?) Proper posture has been shown to increase a person's height by about 2 inches, but of course this only holds true for people who are kuba. That's why these people are prescribed stretching exercises--to improve the way they stand.

Dec 17, 1999, 12:32 AM
thank you for the info, Ira. anyway, me is happy with my height :-). me is jealous though because my other bros are 3-4 inches taller than me :-( even though we had the same nutritional status, and we are almost the same age - one-year interval.
i would like to add another thing. i just read that the vertical growth really stops at age 32? if that's untrue, at what age does one really stop growing tall?
and oh about that epiphysis stuph, is there a chance that inactive epiphysis can be re-activated? or not a chance?
ross
Dec 17, 1999, 04:34 PM
here's a sure way of growing taller: for example you're 5'3" and you want to grow taller edi hang out with 5'1" people.
Ira
Dec 17, 1999, 11:45 PM
Sinned: For guys, vertical growth is regular until the age of 13 1/2-17 1/2, the wide range due to individual/genetic differences. Growth after this age is still possible, and may even go on till the early 30s, but we're talking about really just a small amount of height increase na lang. As for making the epiphysis active again...not possible. :)
ross: Eh di parang member ng seven dwarfs ang labas ninyo.

Makulit, binasa ko ulit ang thread mo but I did not see any numbers on your actual height, and those of your parents. Sabi mo lang "pandak" ka. But that term can be very subjective. Also tell me what your weight is to give me an idea about your wt/ht ratio.
So, before I can tell you about the "other method" which has very specific limitations,
I will need to see those numbers, k?

WKNMakulit
No need to feel dyahi. OK lang yan. At 5'1" (without shoes) you don't fit the real definition of a dwarf or pandak. In fact, that may be close to the average height of a typical pinay... right, doc?
Anyway, here is the piece that I saw a few months ago...I think in Reader's Digest.
WARNING to all you pipols out there: DO NOT attempt to do this at home. ;) Always consult your physician first.
There is an operation which was first done in Russia by Dr. Illizarov, about 15 or so years ago, which has helped re-establish equalization of leg lengths. This is done by cutting the lower leg bone in horizontal sections then gradually pulling them apart with a special metal rig attached to pins drilled into the intact bones above and below the cut(s). They reported gains of up to 5 cms. over several months of slowly and calculatedly ratcheting the bones apart. This operation is called the Illizarov Leg-Lengthening Procedure and is now medically accepted by orthopedic surgeons in the U.S.
Before anyone jumps on it and pressures his/her doctor to do it, be advised that there is still a high risk of complications.
So my best advise for you, HKN-Makulit, is to learn to accept your petiteness and buy a pair of high heeled shoes. Enjoy your life. Other people have worse problems. Go read Lonely Boy's thread and feel blessed.
Ouch...I'm also 5'1". :D
I don't consider our height below average in our culture, and 107 lbs isn't bad at all. In Western measurements, your weight and height is just appropriate, in fact. :)
I'm pretty sure Philippine orthopedic surgeons don't do that procedure here.

This question goes to all the doctors on board:

my parents, siblings, my relatives, and yes, even my friends in school and katulongs at home always remind me of how short i am, how chubby i look, etc... of course im hurt. every time na naririnig ko yun mga words na "ang pandak mo!" and "uy, mag-reduce ka na", i always feel maliit and ugly and that i don't deserve to be in this family. basta masakit. yun lang.

Wagkangmakulit: Since you cannot control your height (except with shoes) try to excel in other things like in academics or sports. In fact, sports may even help your problem with chubbiness.
Also, choose clothes that give a more vertical visual effect. Avoid horizontal lines, large prints or sharp contrasting colors which visually "cuts" the body in half.
Listen to what Dr. Ira told you about maybe adding a couple more inches before you stop growing since you are only 15. Think positive and don't be too hard on yourself. Develop a strong self-esteem and don't let other people's comments discourage you from enjoying your life. Use your energy in helping other people and you will become happier with yourself.

Mayroon akong surefire solution para tatangkad ka. Just wait for a Wednesday that happens to be on the 15th of the month. At exactly 12 noon, eat a 5 gallons of gulaman, wait for five hours for it to be absorbed, tie your hands at a height, tie your feet too with a rope attached to a stone weighing 50 kg (no more, no less). Then jump!! ayan matangkad ka na. Just don't jump from a great height, baka maging 100 footer ka.
Disclaimer: This method has not been tested and proven safe by Surgeon General lestat. We take no responsibilities to it's side effects. Use at you own risk!!!

Life isn't about keeping a score. Its not about how many people call you and it's not about who you've dated, are dating or haven't dated at all. It isn't about who you've kissed, what sport you play
or which guy or girl likes you. It's not about your shoes or you hair or the color of your skin or where you live or go to school.
In fact, it is not about grades, money, clothes or colleges that accepted you or not. Life isn't about if you have many friends or if you're alone, and it's not about how accepted or unaccepted you
are. Life isn't just about that.
But life is about who you love and hurt. It is about how you feel about yourself. It's about sticking up for your friends and
replacing inner hate with love. Life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance and building confidence. It's about what you say and what you mean. It's about seeing people for who they are
not what they have. Most of all, it's about choosing to use your life to touch someone else's in a way that could never have been
achieved otherwise. These choices are what's life about.
There are high spots in all of our lives and most of them come about through encouragement from someone else.
To everyone na may problems: just hang in there. all the problems that u have are the things that will make u a better and stronger person someday... ingits ako sa inyo...

argh. i'm 5'1" as well, but with a big difference: I'M A GUY!!! sure, being vertically challenged is an insecurity which affects both sexes, but for a 19 yr-old guy, it's much, much worse. girls can make up a few inches by wearing high shoes and thick "takongs" and stuff, but seeing a guy in pumps would look pretty bad. sorry, i mean REALLY bad. sure, all of you can go on and on abt personality, and how height doesn't really matter, but the sad fact is that it does, especially in a world wherein everybody is culturally-bred to believe that a guy should be taller than his partner. love is what counts, i hear you start to say? sure it does, but the insecurities will always be there. short girls will have less problems bcoz guys taller than them will be in abundance, but guys like me will find compatible girls to be much more limited. and i'm not just talking abt girls my height or an inch shorter. high heels and thick takongs are in every girl's wardrobe so being an inch taller wouldn't really be an advantage when girls wear these kinds of shoes. even if i do find someone who is taller and who'll love me no matter what my height, other people would still be just as subjective, ppl we don't know will look at us with raised eyebrows because that, sadly, is how life really is. someone posted that to look taller, one must hang out with shorter ppl. this just proves my point that height really is a big insecurity, bcoz now i'm supposed to choose my friends on the basis of height? my, what a cruel world. sometimes i just want to curse god and rue him for the day he dreamt of genetics.

Welcome to PEx, webstool.
Well, 5'1" for a male is short, I agree--it does bring a lot of insecurities and disadvantages; but in the first place, why would you want to be friends (or whatnot) with people who discriminate against you on such a trivial issue as height? Opinions of people such as these are not worth a single centavo, in my opinion. Don't waste a moment's thought on them, and be happy with what you have. :)

By too much weight I mean a sudden drop in pounds over a short period of time, such that you're seriously underweight. You usually just see this in anorexia nervosa.
Kulot: That's about right--medyo underweight na nga eh. You're on the borderline underweight na. :)

Anyway, that is an interesting weight-loss diet, Kulit. What does drinking cold water have anything to do with losing weight? I don't see the correlation....Ira? Help!
Nope, no connection between cold water and losing weight.

At 5'2", your ideal weight should be around 108-143 pounds. You're 105 lbs., which is a bit underweight, but it's not so bad naman. Some scales consider your weight normal for your height.

Sigh. I'm already 16, but I look like 12 with my age. I stand 4'10 flat. Is there anyway, I can get any taller? Are growthballs advisable? Sure, I feel okay with my height. But sometimes, I have this desire to be 5'4 or 5'5 (nangarap pa eh =) ).

the food you eat and the environment you are in may, in my opinion affect your growth though, archeologists would attribute the size (length/diameter ata) of the human bones they dig up to the they way they live and the food they eat. ergo, the healthier the food you eat and the cleaner you live would help in your growth. tama ba doc?
Ira
May 12, 2000, 10:49 AM
Healthy living makes one reach the maximum height potential his genes allow. But you can only work with what you have--in this case, since tRiStAn is already past his early high school stage, a move to another environment and healthy living isn't going to help.

I don't know if this is mentioned in the other thread but I've read about a certain operation. They cut the bones in your legs and insert screws which are adjusted little by little. I don't remember exactly how many centimeters you can gain. It involves quite a bit of pain and you'll have to use a wheelchair for about a year. I think you have to be less than 5 feet for you to be allowed to have it done.

I think surgery for height correction is a little drastic. That procedure is not really accepted in the medical communities yet. The limb-lengthening procedure involves cutting the bone with a mallet and chisel, pulling the bones apart with a crank, inserting metal pins to the bone, then attaching these pins to an outside frame. It takes several months to recuperate, and you're wearing the frame in most of those months. Let's not forget the quite significant scars on your limbs, too. I believe this procedure is only done in cases of dwarfism (unano talaga) and people with bone deformities.

I read about it in a Swedish magazine which may explain why the height limit is set at 5 feet. :D

Yup. Snakeoil, all of them. :) There has not yet been any invention nor discovery in the medical world that will add even 1 centimeter to your height. Height, like a lot of physical traits we have, is genetically predetermined. No amount of growth balls, As Seen On TV goods, or pseudo-hormones is going to change that.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, aNGeLiCioUs, but I'm afraid there's not really a big chance that you'll grow significantly taller in the future. Don't waste your money on "clinics" and "medications" which claim to add to your height--they're b.s. Everyone of us is limited by the dictates of our genetic inheritance with regard to height, and nothing in the near future is going to change that.

Pampatangkad beyond 21?
I say this ad sa Panorama magazine that touts using stretching exercises that are supposed to make you taller by at least an inch or more. Di siya drug therapy.
Noong mga 13 ako, pinainom ako ng tien tsit at ginseng extract mula sa chinese drugstore, tastes terrible but I guess it worked, from 5'5 naging 5'10 na ako when I was 16.
WEll, it matters too that you walk and feel tall, being too self conscious about your height won't change things, pero changing your attitude and the way you carry yourself works wonders, di naman lahat ng ballet dancers matangkad pero the way they dance they look larger than life.

You know what? When you get up in the morning, you are taller by an inch. That is because you are all stretched out and relaxed on bed, provided you lie down straight and flat on your back. A physical therapist friend said to maximize and make this permanent, you can suspend your body from a high chin-up bar and hang like that for about 5 to minutes. :-)

Not really true. You may stretch your spine's ligaments and intervertebral discs longer for a while if you're hanging on a chin-up bar, but once you're back on the floor, gravity works by pushing these ligaments and discs downwards, flattening these parts to their regular density, and you're back to the height you started.

waGkaNgMakulit, use growth hormone, with the above after effect in mind, if to begin with you have hands, feet and jaws that are too small, and if your forehead is too recessed back, and if your teeth are too crowded in your jaws, and you skin too dry and thin. ;)

hi t.
oops sorry, out of thread.

I am 6'2" tall. I am constantly banging my head in jeepneys, buses, siting curnched up with my knees in my face even in taxis, almost unable to breath with my legs cramping. I once had a nail from an overhanging sari sari store roof stick in my head. That was painful and could have been serious. Once a cord strung across the sidewalk on Jones almost took my head off and did a job on my neck. These are not isolated instances and only a couple of many.
The Philippines and the world is not made for people over six feet tall and 5'10 a better height that 6'2" I promise you. Tall has been made popular by US movies, like light skin: all hype. Tall girls in the States often walk humped over afraid they will scare away the shorter men they like. The light skinned people in the States are always staying out in the sun to get brown, and getting sun cancer from it as they grow older. Taking growth homones is just as dangerous and foolish.
Men often like short women better than tall ones, especially if they are short themselves. Even though I am tall I like small women more than tall ones, but it is really not an important consideration for me. I do like an attractive girls and believe that all have their beauty like different flowers. I love roses but orchids are nice too.
Most men, are almost always totally consumed by looks, so small can be better if the rest of the package is nice. Good posture is the key. Good posture and a smile can do wonders. And as Doc said, being small increases the male pool women can pick from.
Women on the other hand, are generally more concerned with personality, the man's ability to relate to them and listen to them, just to listen, not to solve problems. And of course they want someone who can support them if not financially, emotionally. Height does not affect these qualities. No woman wants a tall drunk, wife beater or standby by choice unless she has some emotional problems too.
All "short" men need to know is that height does not count and have the self confidence to approach that tall girl, or short one with confidence and sincerity. Ogie Alcasid has that kind of confidence and it is all that is needed. But don't spurn the short girl. If she has the other qualities you seek she may make you a lot happier. Personallity does count.
Best regards,
Don

How young are you? Usually, a child takes after his/her mom's/dad's characteristics so somehow, you're destined to be that tall nalang. But sleeping is a big factor that can boost your height if you're young, say in the early teen years. And also, I heard that vitamin B1, B6, B12 helps.

You could still have some growth after 18, esp. if you're male, but don't expect the kind of growth that you see when you were younger. Mabagal na after puberty.
As far as I know, bodybuilding does not have any influence on your vertical bone growth.

sorry to say that....your epiphyseal plate that is responsible for the longitudinal growth of your long bones are already closed once you reach the age of 21 (at maximum)...so ur at mid20s....might as well accept that your bones have reached its maturity.

Eyedoc's said it already, and I'll say it again--there is presently nothing in the market medically that will make anyone taller. If you want to try whatever they're selling on TV/print or in Quiapo, go ahead, but be warned that you're just wasting your money.

Tostitos, the place is called YJL Beauty CLinic or something. Fine, I'll give you the address when I get hold of it. It guarantees 1-3 inches taller or your money back. I don't know if it is effective because I haven;t tried it, but since it has a money back guarantee...ok di ba? The advertisment is usually found in MOD or Women's magazine. Check it out.

Bone extensions could be your answer. It's a procedure done by doctors to correct uneven leg growth, but it can also be done to add a few inches to your height. The catch? It's an expensive procedure and you have to be in stilts for a considerable amount of time.

i saw this ad on tv... gordon height or cordon height or something like that... you attach these things to your feet when you sleep... it supposedly releases waves which stimulate your pituitary gland, which releases these hormones which make you grow. does anyone know if it really works?? just curious...
i heard pilates can make you taller... well, not exactly, but i heard it'll fix your posture so you'll stand up straighter (and taller)

If you listen closely to the narrator (of the feet massaging thingie), palaging ang sinasabi niya 'can, might, may', you know, the words that connote uncertainty, it's as if it's saying 'wala kayong habol pag di gumana...hindi naman guaranteed and results ah...listen again to what we were saying'. :)

Not sure if this will work for anyone but somehow it did for me. Extend those morning stretches. Usually when we wake up in the mornings, we stretch like cats (sort of) and that's it. Tapos na. I do several stretches that lasts for half an hour or so every single day. For how long? Since childhood I suppose. Already in my mid-30s, but last time I measured myself (barefoot), I was 6'1" in 1999, and around 6 or so months ago, I turned up to be 6'2.5". It's up to you if you wish to do the same thing. It's free and it just eats up 30 or so minutes of your time in the mornings.

you can still add couple of inches to your height for sure. sounds too good to be true huh? impossible? nah. men of science agree that growth can continue (not until until puberty) but until the age of 40.
Two scientific reasons are:
1. The physiological curvatures of the spine, and
2. The expansibility of the invertebral cartilages of the spine.
So you wanna add couple of inches to your growth? The best way to do so is STRETCHING EXERCISES every morning and before you go to bed. second, try to get at least 9 or 10 hours of sleep a day (ugh!:P). plenty of sleep is needed to increase your height, it gives the spine the chance to stretch and straighten. it also relieves the intervertebral fibro-cartilages from pressure. SLEEP FLAT ON YOUR BACK, dont sleep curled in bed. Third, eat plenty of protein foods...
of course this needs time...but if you want instant result here are some hints on how to look taller:
1. wear clothers with vertical stripes
2. backcombing hairstyle
3. some uses elevators - these are pieces of rubber especially constructed to be adjusted into the base of shoes
4.always carry your head high.
5. always stand, sit, walk and think tall
6. aside from the stretching, do the tip toe exercies - this will stretch your body and improve your posture...
well..hope this work for yah!
goodluck :D :)

Yup, there are growth hormones, BUT since your brother is already in his late teens, there may be other metabolic problems that have gone undetected. He cannot and should not be given growth hormones without the supervision of an endocrinologist because it can cause many undesirable side effects. Not everyone who is vertically challenged should be given this. You'll have to know whether there is a pituitary gland problem with your brother, whether there are other endocrine problems that are going on, and whether your brother's epiphyseal growth plates are already fused, which would mean he cannot take the growth hormone anymore. The growth hormone injections are usually given in younger age groups, not when you're nearly 20. There are a lot of workups that need to be done, and for your brother's wellbeing, he should be brought to an endocrinologist. If it's found out that he isn't a candidate for medical therapy anymore, there is still a surgical option, which can be done at St. Luke's.

you read it right! actually this is a fad in malaysia and singapore a year ago. i just don't know how popular it is now. it is also available in capsule form but the distributors themselves encourage more the use of mouth spray as its absorption is better. this growth hormones are actually extracts from a nut tree in south america. anyway in our country, most doctors don't recommend it either they are afraid of the possible side effects or they just don't have knowledge about the products. you see in our pharmacology and even endocrine subjects the physiology and effects of this hormone is the one being emphasized. the actual products in the market are seldom or not discussed at all.

Sep 16, 2003, 09:58 AM
tammers: The endocrinologist will order the lab tests like growth hormone levels, etc. All you have to do is to bring your brother to see a doctor. As for endocrinologists, what hospital would your brother prefer to follow up?
For surgical option, they will cut the leg bone in half and put a steel rod between it.

has anyone here used growth hormone for anti aging purpose?
bjmanabat
Sep 16, 2003, 06:55 PM
actually in singapore, canada and malaysia (i don't know in other countries) it is really marketed as an anti aging product. to me its a misnomer because it doesn't actually prevent aging but slows down the process. some of the benefits "they claim" to our body includes: better memory, good sleep, increase libido, increase body resistance, increase endurance, good skin complexion and elasticity, increase muscle mass......(can't remember the others, i think its around 12-14 benefits). there are actual testimonials in singapore about its effectiveness but we can't actually verify its authenticity. for all you know they are in a way connected or paid by the company. there are however no reported side effects on its clinical trial in malaysia and singapore (that's why the government allowed it to be marketed without restrictions).

Sep 17, 2003, 06:13 PM
you are right the secretion of growth hormones increases on regular exercise. not only that exercise is good for your heart, blood circulation and it increases your muscle mass and endurance. also having a "good sleep" regularly, increases the secretion of growth hormones.

well, there's this operation you can take. it breaks the bones of the legs in 2 places. then you'll kave to wear leg braces for about a year to stretch the broken bones (kasi new bone tissue or whatever will grow). after the procedure (plus excruciating months of therapy) you would've added 6 or more inches to yer height. yun nga lang, the whole thing's extremely expensive. my other friend naman was telling me this variant of the said procedure. instead of growing new bone tissue, you fill-in the broken gaps with a bonelike substance.
mas bagay nga lang yung operation to people who don't have that long-legged look to them. para natural pa din tignan after the operation. :)
i think 500K yung price ng opearation e. umaabot ata 2M pag kasama yung drugs, therapy, etc.

Growth hormone is only given to children who are abnormally short and who have not reached mid-adolescence yet. If your bones are already thoroughly fused, it will not help. You'll only end up looking like the late Andre the Giant develop life-threatening problems.

I just notice that younger generation are getting taller and taller than the older generation. I am a bit taller than guys my age, but I notice that there are now a lot younger guys who are taller than me. Does it have something to do with those infant formulas?
It is due to a better and more balanced nutrition during childhood compared to previous generations' diets. It's not the milk alone. Milk does not contain any magic formula, and even if you take gallons of milk daily, you will not grow to your maximal height if you don't eat right.

ok, I'm not really that short (5'10") but I'm not exactly that tall. I just wanted to know if the epiphyseal plate can be re-opened and be induced to elongate again after the growth spurt during puberty has ended?
I've seen the operations they do on midgets and from what I understand, they attached screws along the bone shaft and increase the distance between the pieces as the new bone matrix forms. I don't think they do anything with the epiphyseal plates though.
Not that i want to have this done on me... but who knows, it might be a good physiology research topic. hehe :glee:
Sayeesha
Jan 25, 2004, 01:00 PM
Interesting question... Alam ko yung concept na ginagawang ganiyan sa mga midget is not the plate itself..... parang nagiiwan lang ng gap sufficient enough for the bones to reproduce calcium in that area, much like the way the bones would do when broken or fractured...

Once the cartilagenous tissue is replaced by bone tissue, you cannot induce it to going back to cartilage again even if you reopen the area. You're right--the Illizarov technique, which is the surgical technique you're referring to, works through the principle of distraction osteogenesis, i.e., you make the bone longer through callus and subsequent bone formation in the created gap.

Hi Doc Ira; I was hoping you could answer my question.
I'm 14 years old, turning 15 in August, and as of now, I am 5" tall. Yung lahi po ng dad ko, short sila, di gaanong tall. Sa side naman ng nanay ko, matatangkad naman. Unfortunately, namana ko yung genes ng dad ko...in short, hindi ako matangkad. I know I have mga two to three years left to gain more height. Tatangkad pa kaya ako? Paano ako tatangkad?
Chubby po kasi ako eh, saka hindi rin sobrang athletic. If I get involved in sports, mase-stretch kaya ang limbs ko? Two years ago, nagsi-swimming ako, at from 4'8" naging 4'11" ako. Lately kasi di kami lumalabas often, saka mostly busy ako with schoolwork and other activities, so di na ako nakakapag-swimming. Basta, mostly sedentary ang lifestyle ko. Di ako masyadong nag-eexercise. Tuwing summer, nagte-treadmill ako at least 3-5 times a week, mga 30-45 minutes, pero kapag may pasok, madalas nakaupo ako. May alam po ba kayong stretching exercises and such? Someone suggested that I try Pilates. Effective kaya?
Binibigyan din ako ng mga Chinese herb pills. Actually, I don't want to take them, pero pinipilit ako eh. Do you recommend these pills? I highly doubt they can help make me grow taller.
As for my sleeping habits... I sleep at around 11-12 o' clock. Tuwing summer, I get up at 10-11 am. Kung may summer classes, mga 7-8, tapos kung may pasok, mga 5:30 am. Does the amount of sleep affect your height?
Sorry for asking something that I know has been posted before; pero I couldn't get sufficient answers from previous posts I've found.

An endocrinologist can only help to some extent children who are abnormally short. If you're her age, it's too late. 5' is not considered a dwarf and there's no medical indication to give her any medication.

One reason why tayong mga Pinoy ay di matangkad dahil kulang tayo sa calcium intake specially during childhood & a good balance meal.
If we take milk it is in the form of powder **** which is not good & we don't seemed to eat cheese kasi mahal sa atin.
Really milk does help a lot. Our neighbor's son is 15-as tall as 5'9".
Anybody here tried toasted bread with melted cheese? Sarap talaga.

pinay24: true ka, mukhang kapos tayong mga pinoy sa calcium intake, i notice na ang mga european at mga american kasama na sa meal nila ang gatas at mga food na mayaman sa calcium...if i can turned back the time, sana nagdemand ako ng husto sa parents ko ng mga ganoong pagkain, kaya ngayon heto umaasa pa rin kahit papano na tumangkad at nagbabakasakali na kahit sa age ko n ito madagdagan pa.
but for sure there still hope, as i notice na humahaba naman ang mga limbs ko, basta proper stretching , diet and good habit lifestyle.

I can't think of any other reason beside dun sa tulog ko, i really don't drink milk and I really don't like cheese.. in short, kulang din calcium intake ko, pero I grew pa din.
By the way, my parents are not that tall..

he was once 5'9 tall (high-school days) then he enrolled in a Pilates class for like 8 months or so, now in his college fourth year level, he is now 5'11 tall... i was amazed. now some talent scouts are encouraging him to be a ramp model. coz the minimum height of a male model is 5'10.

Sadly, once you turn 20, the only way for you to grow any taller is to have an orthodopedic surgeon stretch your legs through distraction osteogenesis screws like the ones used in the movie Gattaca.
We all experience what are termed as Growth spurts, which are periods of accelerated growth. It's during puberty wherein our body "grows" the fastest. Sadly, after puberty, growth goes steadily downhill.
After puberty, the "soft parts" of the long bones of our body such as those of the legs are either almost fused or nearly fused. When this happens, you'll most likely be as tall as you could ever be.
There is someone for everyone. Someday you'll find the right person for you, someone who'll accept you for all that you are. Till then, keep your chin up and never slouch while walking or sitting.
All things come to those who wait. A time for everything..everything in it's own time.

Though your chances are slim. Keep your hopes up!
Try taking Cherifer PGM 10-22, get enough night sleep and stretch like hell every morning. Though I'm over my growth spurt I've managed to grow a half inch taller! I cannot say if the same will happen to you though, but heck, what have you got to lose ?
Good Luck-o !

Nasa genes na yan. You are stuck with that height.
You need to focus your energy into something you can become, not something can't become. It's an unreachable goal that will make you miserable all your life. A short doctor gets more girls than a tall guy who flips burger for a living. Just date shorter girls. There's a lot of short and cute vietnamese girl in the US.
There's a surgical procedure in China that will make you maybe 6 inch taller. This involves sawing your leg bone, extending it with a brace everytime your bone heals. It takes a year for full recovery and it's very painful. It leaves nasty scars too.
may nakita ako pampahaba ng leeg... kalimutan ko nga lang yung name
