I really want to have Spanish names for my baby, it sounds so dignified and natural unlike English names when they sound so trite and "pilit" with our Spanish last name (but our last name really is beautiful, a lot of whites and Hispanics here have given us compliments about it :D). I wanted the name Diego (prounounced DI-EGO not JEGO) or Santiago (nickname Yago\) for my little boy. My friends have beautiful names for their babies. My friend's boys are named miguel and Joaquin and it really suits them. Another friend with a baby girl named hers Ysobel Sophia .

But my hubby said that since we're in the States, having a Spanish first and last name might make people think we're Mexicans. So we opted to have an English-sounding name for our baby.

If we were in the Philippines though, I'd really want to have beautiful Spanish names for my baby.

How come most Pinoys want English-sounding names?

that's so true about pinoys wanting american names... but they usually sound so contrived... and i agree about spanish names.. they do have a certain elegance and they're nice to say without sounding so maarte like a lot of american names... besides which american names are so common already. maybe it's part of the brown american package? although we're not spanish either... just our names... oh well... it's a thread for the cutest baby names but i'm waxing philosophical already.. better just give names. :bonkself:

indica, asul, maria - it's overused, like a prerequisite for females in the philippines but i still find the name beautiful. malaya,

miguel, frode - it means wise, frode is a character in the solitaire mystery by gaarder (im not 100% sure about the spelling, but he's the same guy who wrote maya) i guess ít's more of feeling an affinity with the character than an actual preference for the name..

and weetzie bat and witch baby and angel juan - among other characters from the weetzie bat books by francesca lia block - although the baby might have a hard time having pizza delivered.:lol:

i also like anne... but it's also common (i'm trying to find the more unusual names or else our baby will end up having a name like alex santos in the bank advertisement) so i searched and found an, it's chinese and it means peace. :smoking:

Just remember that some names may make the kid cool in his teen years, but hurt them later on. Especially if they ever want to be hired for a serious job. Somehow I don't see the VP of a large company ever named Zacrye Lewis (no offense meant, I think it's a cool name).

Some names are also cute (especially for a kid), but are not exactly power names. Like Justin, Andy, Brandon etc... do not carry as much weight as William (Bill), Robert, Michael, etc...

He's so pissed off with his mom because he had to correct the spelling of his name all the time: in school, in the doctor's office, etc. He said it's like a lifetime of punishment, saying he'd never do that to his kid when he gets to have one in the future.

my wife and i already had names for our future kids--one girl and one boy-- even when we were still dating. the girl would be named sophia ("widsom" - and because her father is a philosophy major), and the boy, david ("beloved").

well david came out first, just last april 14 in fact. his complete name is david enrico. we had some debate on the second name--i didn't want an american-sounding one becase "david" (DAY-VID) is already that. so there. it's a good name, i think, and it sounds ok combined with my funny-sounding surname.

my wife and i used the "graduation announcement" test in deciding our baby's name: we imagined the name being announced during commencement exercises--at may first honors pa! the name has to sound good during the announcement. :D

as to unusual names, there's some wisdom in that, apart from making your child unique. if you give your child a "common" name, baka mahirapan sya sa pagkuha ng nbi clearance later on kapag may kapangalan sya, lalo na kung common din yung apelyido nyo. just a little practical consideration i learned from a friend who had some problems getting her clearance.
