Ketoconazole's antiandrogen properties are seen only when you take its tablet form. And before you even see hair growth if you take it orally, you will have feminizing side effects like breast enlargement. It also interferes with your body's cortisol production, as well as cause severe liver damage. Ketoconazole as a shampoo probably does not prevent hair loss due to its antiandrogenic properties--it kills fungi that may cause hair loss, but it's unknown if the body actually absorbs enough of the shampoo to stimulate hair growth. There are too many severe side effects in its oral form to be used as a hair restorer.
