why don't you try using a dab (pea size) of toothpaste at first.
if it doesn't work, there's actually different flavors of toothpaste. i know crest makes some for toddlers. generally, toothpaste would have some kind of taste to it. why not try arm and hammer toothpaste or depending where you are, tom's of maine. i like tom's of maine since they don't add any pigments or coloring. whatever toothpaste you use, make sure it has flouride.

i suggest you don't give toothpaste with flouride if your child still doesn't know how to spit. the child might get fluorosis, or discoloration of the teeth.
Best if you use non-flouride toothpaste and give him multi-vitamins with flouride instead. That's what we were recommended.

wow i never knew that!
i remember my pediatrician told me that if i give my daughter water, to use tap (the utility company adds flouride) or i forgot the name of this bottled water (it's been a while) since it has flouride. but then again i guess it depends on the age? my daughter was about 2 or 3 at that time. same for my dentist when i asked about toothpaste.
thanks for the info.
