Stress and depression are two of the most common modern health complaints. These two health issues are related, yet are very different. Stress is the result of over-work, running around aiming to meet dead-lines, and poor nutritional habits. Stress is an unavoidable aspect of life; however it seems that today we are affected by a different and more severe kind of stress. Today, worry about personal finances and job related stress is a problem all over the world.

A recent United Nations Report called stress “The 20th Century Epidemic”. Stress, anxiety, and depression exist in a vicious circle, leading to one another. Stress is a major contributing factor to depression and anxiety, with negative effects being seen in the gastrointestinal tract, skin, and several internal organs. When we are stressed our body releases additional adrenaline, cortisol, and other stress-related hormones. Over stimulation of the stress hormones can lead to “burn out”- a state of severe exhaustion.

Stress is related to - and greatly affected by nutrition and diet. Adequate levels of vitamins, mineral and antioxidants can help the body deal with the negative aspects of stress. Healthy foods and optimal protein and fibre intake can help balance blood sugar levels may help control stress and depression. Many people who suffer depression also have wild blood sugar imbalances.

The best way to cope with depression and stress is to talk to people. :)

I may be stressed but I am never depressed. I tend to find my sense of calmness by thanking allthe blessings i had received. Being stress is just like having a double serving of adrenalin. It does make me work and think faster. So, i guess being stressed is a blessing as well. and thats just my opinion precisely because it works for me.

Depression is to be taken seriously...... I learned it the hard way..... my best friend got depressed not so long ago and passed away after years of missing his sons. He's a regular H1-B IT employee who's earning very well in OAO (a health-related company somewhere in LA). Why he hasn't gotten his sons here and how he passed away are an entirely long and different stories.

I also got depressed early last year after he, my grandmother and a close friend from college died. I started loosing interest in life but I fought it. Kumonsulta ako sa duktor and got my medicine and sleeping pills....... I can't imagine where I will be now if I didn't recognize the problem. Heck, I might be playing chess while watching Monday night football with by best friend, which we regularly do before he passed away, for all I know.

playing with your pets is an effective way of coping with stress. if you don't have a cat or dog, watch animal planet or national geographic. that works for me :D

try not to spend too much time (like going to the gym and on gimmicks) with your officemates because their faces will remind you of the office and you will usually end up talking about work. spend your weekends with your family and school friends.

find a hobby like learning a new language, looking for recipes on the net and making delicious meals for your family, or making jewelry. anything that will let your forget about work for a few hours and let your mind rest.

true... the best way to avoid stress is to live a simple life. i know people who are extremely focused on their careers and i admire that, but i know that i'm not built that way and i would be too stressed and burned out if i were always looking for raises and promotions. also, repeat the serenity prayer to yourself when coping with a difficult situation or if you feel depressed about life and what's happening in our country and the rest of the world. it may sound like a defeatist approach to life but the truth is, it's not healthy to worry and obsess about things that are out of our hands.

GOD, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace. Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

busy people should watch out for panic attacks. it has the following symptoms: chest pain, nausea, and vomiting. i went through one. i thought i had a heart attack and was on the brink of death. things like these give us good reason to be health conscious.

anyway, my top stress-busters are as follows:

1. working out at the gym
2. getting a massage
3. deep breathing
4. making love :D

ako, when I feel stressed or depressed--- nag-aabsent ako. gaya ngayon.

I get stressed when i need to work during the weekends the following week puro 10 am na yung pasok ko. I think of it as nagtatampo yung system ko sa akin kasi nde sya nakapahinga gaano.

I'm one of those people who needs their 8hrs of sleep eh. If i get 7 hrs lang parang mainit ang ulo ko the whole day and i'm not as productive at work.

To de-stress

1. Get a good workout
2. Play guitar
3. Look at my fishies
4. Watch Porn and imagine what life would be like if i'm paid to screw good lookin chicks for a livin  hahahaha.....
5. Take a day off <- i'm not pala absent. So if i take a day off malamang masama na lagay ko nun.

We were invited to join CFC, Couples for Christ, and finished the 13 week seminar, which was held every saturday. It turned out to be the best stress reliever I've ever come across and I've tried almost everything.

It brings you closer to the Lord, makes you prayerful, teaches you to count your blessings and multiplies your friends from all walks of life tenfold.

Prayer works!

mind you that stress is not just present in working professionals...kahit sa mga jobless, like me present din yan thinking of finances (what if your savings are already depleted) or kung kailan ka magkakatrabaho. i can say na siguro sa mundong ito, batang musmos lang walang stress :)

to cope with it:
- meditation (breath in, breath out)
- food conscious (pag stressed/depressed mas malakas ang appetite at maya't maya kakain)
- dasal
- basa ng libro
- hang-out/gimmicks (pero alcohol may trigger yung depression)
- communication (chat)
- internet (research ka about causes ng stress mo tapos kung applicable sa yo e di subukan mo gawin, di ba?)
