Ok, here goes...

what causes the dark circles under the eyes? Lately, i'v e been staying up late...and whoa...major raccoon eyes. I recently had my photo taken for my passport and everyone had smirky comments about them.

will they ever go away or am i forever doomed to be frankenstein's bride?

Dark circles a can occur due to fatigue, allergies, overexposure to the sun, hyperpigmentation (usually familial, especially in Meditteranean families), menstruation or pregnancy.

What you're seeing isn't really darkened skin, but rather engorged blood vessels under your eyes. Because the skin under your eyes is thinner than skin anywhere else on your body, blood vessels there are more noticeable, especially if you're fair-skinned (which you are, Mavi!).

If you want to try to minimize dark circles, you might apply a cold compress. Close your eyes and cover them with a cold washcloth for about five minutes. That will help constrict your blood vessels, minimizing darkness and it may help to minimize tissue swelling and eliminate some of the darkness. There's a special concealer that they sell in La Botica in Rustan's, especially made for dark circles. It looks like a light green lipstick. You might want to try that out, too. As for being a Frankenstein's bride lookalike...I really doubt that! Di ba, nix? :)

Mikki: Hi! Welcome to PEx (ako bago din dito).

My non-medical suggestions: sleep with your head higher (2 pillows), cut down on salt and MSG because they can cause fluid retention, and use a cold pack on your eyes for 10 minutes after you wake up.

Mikki,

Welcome din to PEx.

Anong kalseng bags ba yan? Gucci o LV?
Tignan ko nga at baka maibenta natin.
O di tutubo pa tayo. 50/50 ang kita, ha?
...or is that 20/20 for the eyes.

Kung hindi mo gets, dyok onli ito.
Huwag ka sanang magagalit. Seriously,
yung sinabi ni Reflection ay magandang
payo. Subukan mo.

Welcome to Pinoy Exchange, guys. We hope we'll see a lot of your posts in the days to come.

Eyebags are caused by congestion of the blood vessels beneath the eyelids. Short of plastic surgery, there's really not much you can do to permanently remove them. However, you can make it less congested by what Reflection nicely suggested (they work). If you don't want to make a mess by placing ice on your eye area, you can also buy eye packs in Le Drug in Rustan's-- they look like eye masks. It's made of plastic, with blue or green liquid in them. All you have to do is stuff them in the fridge and just put them over your eyes when you need to.

Reflections, Clone, Ira thank you sa welcome at mga payo. Susubukan ko to.

Thank you sa inyong lahat.

Thank you ulit.

Uh-oh mikki, sounds like your uncle has something I see every single day! If he has numbness of the legs (and probably toes), he might have a slipped lumbar disc brought about by lifting heavy objects. Tell your uncle to see a neurosurgeon-- an MRI of the lumbosacral spine is in order. And tell him to take painkillers like Orudis or Flanax forte to help tide the pain temporarily.

No problem, mikki. Glad to help.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of imaging similar to x-rays, but this one uses magnetic energy instead of radiation. It's the best type of imaging to use to view the vertebral bodies and spinal cord. It's a little expensive, around PhP8,000-11,000, depending on which hospital you have it done. You undergo this procedure on an outpatient basis, so no need to get admitted to a hospital. It's not painful, although some claustrophobics may require sedation, because you are put in a sort of cavelike hole for 45 minutes. Tell your uncle to go to a neurosurgeon first; the doctor will be the one to request for an MRI.

Lumbar disc herniations/slipped discs are frequently caused by lifting heavy objects. Pag mali ang bending position mo habang nagbubuhat ka, the exerted effort/pressure causes your nucleus pulposus (the soft part in between the lumbar discs) to get pushed out and extruded posteriorly to the spinal canal. It then pushes against the nerve roots (and occassionally, the spinal cord), causing symptoms like low back pain, numbness and weakness.

Mikki

Thank you Dra.

Ira: Very clear and concise explanation. Thank you for enlightening the rest of us on-lookers also.

There are so many misconceptions regarding back injuries and how to treat them. Even I am learning from your answer, to be stored in my mind for future reference. I just hope I don't have to use it personally.

BTW, do all disc herniations/slipped discs need an operation?

Tezz
Jan 10, 2000, 01:56 PM
Home remedy.. i fyou have a cucumber in the fridge; cut a piece and place it on top of your eyes.. that is if you are on the couch, (semi-fowlers) relaxing . :)

Mikki
Jan 10, 2000, 03:02 PM
Salamat sa paliwanag nyo Dra. Grabe pala yung slipped disc.

Ira
Jan 10, 2000, 11:33 PM
clone: Not all herniations need to be operated on. The ones that probably need to go under the knife are the ones who are already experiencing neurologic symptoms like numbness, electric-like shooting pains, and weakness. However, these are still not absolute indications for surgery. We have to correlate the signs and symptoms first with the MRI results, and even then, physical therapy and back muscle strengthening exercises with analgesics come first--unless the spinal cord is already getting significantly pinched. Surgery is the "final frontier" :D if exercises and analgesics don't help.

Thank you, Ira. One other question if you don't mind. I heard about steroid injection into the spine for people with real bad back pain. How effective is this?

BTW are we getting off-topic here since we are no longer dealing with eyebags? I can open a new topic on backs if you prefer.

Tezz
Jan 11, 2000, 02:52 PM
Mikki... it's not semi-flowers..it's semi- fowlers position..meaning you are in inclined position, with the upper half of the body raised by elevating the head of the bed approximately 30 degrees; while you are relaxing... that's what I meant.. :)

How do you get rid of eyebags???????

One more thing: Is it okay if you sleep late at night, but wake up late din? I mean, for example kahit late ka ng natulog, pero bumawi ka naman kasi 10 hours ang tulog mo. What does really count: the hours of one's sleep, or kung anong oras siya natulog? HEck, I don't know if I'm making sense here. Basta all I wanna get rid of ----eyebags!!! =(

Ira
Apr 7, 2000, 10:24 AM
Eyebags are worsened by lack of sleep, smoking, allergies, rubbing, mineral deficiency, the most frequent causes. You can minimize the dark circles which make it look worse by washing your face with cold water in the morning. Try out suggestions mentioned in this link:

http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=21872 .

Otherwise, if you really have eyebags a la Sharon Cuneta during her childhood days, the only way to make it disappear is to undergo blepharoplasty, which removes the excess skin.

As for sleep, I was taught in school that as long as you get the requisite number of hours' sleep, then it's okay. But BU will certainly know more about this. :)

I saw this product at Beauty Bar in Glorietta. I forgot what's it called but it's specifically for eyebags. Its around P525 bucks...

Its a patch that you put under your eye and it reduces the dark circles, and even makes the wrinkles disappear! Haven't tried it yet. It's so expensive! P525 for 10 patches...?!

If you guys try it out... let me know...

how about pipino (cucumber), effective be yon? :D

Ira
Jun 29, 2000, 11:40 PM
Cucumbers are for eye puffiness. Undereye puffiness is caused by water retention in the fat and muscle around the eye. The cooling effects of cucumbers, eye creams and tea bags can reduce this puffiness, but only for 1-2 hours before the water returns.

You might want to try putting ice packs and Hirudoid cream (yup, Hirudoid) 1x a day to shrink the vessels underneath your eyes -- these may help a bit, but there is really no throughly effective medication right now to help shrink those other than surgery.

:( i have all these anomalies in my face. I don't normally care about these when i was younger but now that my GF seems to be bothered by it, i am at loss for a solution. I just want to know if there is a way for me to improve my appearance. She said it makes me look too old (i'm only 25) and hagard looking. I completely agree with her :~( Is there a cure for eyebags and deep dark lines? What kind of doctor should i seek? I've tried the cucumber and tea bag approach but it was only a temporary fix. I want something that can last all throughout. I hope that surgery wont be an option..im too broke for that. :D :D

The only solutions are temporary. If you want a more permanent one, you'll have to see a plastic/reconstructive surgeon or an ophthalmologist specializing in plastic surgery of the eye.

It's a common belief that insufficient sleep gives you eye-bags because of the poor blood circulation. If that is the case then the eye-bags i have right now is due to the lack of sleep I've been getting lately for the past months... Sometimes I've even go 24 hours without sleeping...

My questions are: since its not genetic could i get rid of my eye-bags by sleeping more often? Using a cold cucumber or tea bags will accelerate the speed to get rid of eye-bags? Is this all temporary treatment and surgery is the only permanent way to remove eye-bags or dark circles around my eyes?

eyedoc
Jun 14, 2004, 01:19 AM
Getting enough rest would lessen engorgement of the vessels under your eyes, making them less dark in appearance.

Cold cucumber or tea bags are temporary treatments.

Maybe I should be posting this on the beauty thread instead of this health thread...But I'd like to ask the docs the BEST way to eliminate eyebags and undereye circles. I get enough sleep, YET is still have those horrible-horrible dark undereye circles. Same with the eyebags (which are minimized by placing cooled chamomile teabags, thank goodness!) I'm not up to wearing concealer everyday...I miss my eyes when I was younger :(( hay naku...
What causes eyebags and undereye circles ba talaga? Actually, when I was in my teens (not too long ago, I'm in my early 20's pa lang, mind you!) mern na din me prob na ganun, pero not as bad as now :(
Thanks docs...I hope you can help me in my "kikay" concern! hehehe

Could I ask you guys 2 questions to test my hunch on eyebags?

Question 1: Have you ever experienced excessive sneezing in the morning or unusually frequent 'baradong ilong'?

My hunch: The dark circles around the eyes are related to congestion caused by allergic rhinitis.

Question 2: Nakadapa ka ba matulog o nakahiga?

Hunch: The dark circles are related to position... nakadapa making you prone to develop the dark circles.

Cheers!

Hi! You can try neostrata bionic eye cream. It is a very good product for dark undereye circles, for puffiness and for fine lines and wrinkles. You can ask your dermatologist about it. It is made in USA and is only half the price of what you have posted in this thread.:)

Anybody have any ideas on how to remove or at least minimize eyebags? I wore eyeglasses years ago and noticed that I developed eyebags because of it. How can I remove them? Thanks for the replies.

try mo yung mga under the eye creams found in supermarkets. madami yan e, there's nivea, pond's, extraderm and loreal. yun yung mga napapansin ko when i buy my toiletries. so far i've tried nivea... not for eye bags though because i don't have them... pang dark circles lang. i'm not sure if it's really working so i'm gonna have to try out something else... pond's maybe...

Hi.

Is there a way to get rid of this? How?

Thanks.

There are creams and there are surgical ways (laser or cold steel). I can hook you up with Ophthalmic plastic surgeons or dermatologists if you want.

If you want to try to minimize dark circles, you might apply a cold compress. Close your eyes and cover them with a cold washcloth for about five minutes. That will help constrict your blood vessels, minimizing darkness and it may help to minimize tissue swelling and eliminate some of the darkness. :)

how often should you do this?

Peri-orbital darkening can have many causes: prior irritation and subsequent pigmentation, genetic predisposition (i.e. heredity), defective blood flow and drainage, and several internal medical problems. So, treatment may be effective for some and not at all for others. A visit to your dermatologist can help you decide which products are best. Generally, an eye cream containing Vitamin K may help the pigmentation especially when it's caused by poor circulation around the eye area.

As for the eyebags, blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is considered by most as the "gold standard" with minimal complications and downtime in the hands of expert cosmetic surgeons. Some eye creams may help tighten the area and may improve mild eyebags. Mesotherapy may also improve it and is done by injecting medications that dissolve fat into the lower eyelids. However, it's not yet commonly done here but is big in Brazil where they do it left and right.

I'm no expert on this but I wan't to share. Two major reasons ng eyebags, stress and genetics.
Stress- Pag hindi ka nkkuha ng enough rest and sleep it will show the eyebags mo, in cases like this maybe all you really need is regular and healthy sleeping habits. Samahan mo na rin ng good diet and exercise you will eventually look refreshed from head to toe.
Genetics- Minsan nasa lahi talaga yung malaking eyebags. Inspect mo kamag anak mo if feature ba yan sa lahi.. Then AGING is also the cause of having larger eyebags. When you get older your eyebags get more visible ksi the skin on your eyes begin to be thinner.
The creams will help you improve the appearance of your eyebags. Mawawala ng konti or temporarily yung puffiness. But if you want a more drastic approach pumunta ka sa cosmetic surgeon. Minsan they will use laser to melt the fat or baka may tatanggalin silang excess skin. Tapos you will look youthful again. hopefully.
If wala ka namang budget for sugery, try the most trusted cucumber. Yung ibang cold spoon left on the ref for a while. Tapos ilalagay sa mata. This is helpful pag kulang sa tulog or bagong iyak.
One tip I gathered is you sleep with your head elevated from the rest of your body. Take an extra pillow. This will prevent daw yung fliud from accumulating around the eye area. Tapos be sure matutulog ka. hehe
Good luck!

hello!
Thanks for all the info na sinulat niyo dito sa forum.

depends on how much of it is due to lack of sleep to begin with...

May nakita ako kanina sa watsons, another eye cream.

I'm planning to buy it, pero gusto ko malaman if it's worth it.

IMPORTANT: Start using 2x-a-week. Very slowly, increase application frequency to 3x-a-week, then 1x-every-other-day, and finally to 2x-a-day usage.

Do not rush: This slow, gradual increase in application frequency lets your skin best adjust to, and fully benefit from, Glykeros therapy. Follow all instructions carefully.

Throughout Glykeros Therapy: use an Armada Sun and Light Screen every day, whether indoors and outdoors, and whether or not this Serum has been applied on a given day.

Ingredients:

Active Ingredients: Glycolic Acid – 0.30%, Kinetin – 0.01%, Propylene Glycol, Ruscus Aculeatus Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Panthenol, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Extract, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate – 3%

Other Ingredients: Soy Protein Phthalate, Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Ceteareth-25, Hydrolyzed Elastin, Glyceryl Laurate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, C12-15 Alkyl Lactate, Triethanolamine, Carbomer 940, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate.

base dun sa info, wala naman kayang masamang effect ito sa skin. thanks. tska bakit kaya kelangan pa gumamit nung sun and light screen every day. ?

thanks

So far I've read the following:

1) HIRUDOID cream
2) Loreal Hydrafresh
3) Pond's whitening liquid
4) St. Ives Eye and Face Gel

Thank you very much.
