Gina Pareno is a scene stealer as the social climbing mother of Francine Prieto in BRIDAL SHOWER> Pang Best Supporting Actress ang performance. One scene shows how Gina (with pasalubong) made chika to people she thought were her future in-laws only to find out that the in-laws lived in the house next door.
She also has this pathetic scene where she was caught shop lifting in SM MegaMall and she was caught with goodies inside her panties and her skirt all raised up---and her photo being taken in such a manner. nakakatawang nakakahiya na nakakawa.
And how her daughter eventually married the rich boy and by the time the coins were thrown before the bride and the groom, in beaded gown (a la Eloy's) and high heals, she picked up coins as they fell on the ground together with children. jologs nga kasi ang kanyang pamilya in the movie.

Mahusay. Magaling. Mapanuod nga.
As for the MMFF 2003 picks, parang mahirap ang mga pagpipilian... Sa susunod na lang ang choices ko.

Everyone is forgetting Portes' Homecoming. This is the same team which did Mga Munting Tinig. I wouldn't be surprised if this movie achieves a major upset.

Panoorin ko ang Mano Po 2. Last year, super ang media hype ng Mano Po.

Ect.
Diba?
So ifever na sino man ang win ngayun igalang nalang natin.
Hope Maricel or Lorna Win da best actress if not kung sino man sa kanila. Im sure to my heart igagalang ko at DESERVE sya...:)

i have seen the preview for Mano Po 2 and if it's any indication, it has the most entertainment value and quality as well...
what's so good about Mano Po 2? It's a movie where almost the whole line up boasts of powerful acting...yung tipong halos walang patapon na acting (except maybe yung kay karylle, but i don't wanna judge her just because...)
The average reasonable person would know that these actors and actresses wouldn't settle for anything subpar.
the magnitude of the cast is overwhelming...
Crying Ladies looks good too!
Filipinas- i don't know the synopsis for this movie pero parang nakaka-throw off lang yung title- it sounds so much like a period movie...No doubt , the success of this film rests firmly on Maricel's shoulders!
Etong 3 lang naman ang worth the hype eh!in my opinion....

I agree.. the FAMILY is very important because it is the base for stable Philippine society. People show love and happiness in the family. The family is a protected place where children can grow, learn and care for one another.
FILIPINAS is a must-see movie becoz it tackles Filipino Family Relationships.

I still think last year's Mano Po was a great disappointment. Sorry to the fans of Mano Po, but I think Dekada '70 was robbed by the honors it deserved last year.
Well, with a new director my hopes and expectations were renewed for this year's installment of the movie. But the writer, Roy Iglesias remain. I'm not sure if it's just Joel Lamangan or Roy Iglesias or both of them, but their movies are almost always shortchanged. They tend to cover all issues but only to be messed up in the end. So with Filipinas? I will not be surprised if this movie will have traces of how Mano Po was badly executed last year.
Awards are by far not a reliable gauge of a good movie. Highly-political, yes, we have to admit that it exists in showbiz, would be a better way to describe the award-giving bodies in the Philippines.
Dark horse winners will probably be Homecoming or Crying Ladies.
Just thinking aloud. ;)

ISYU AT BANAT Ni Ed De Leon
Pilipino STAR Ngayon 12/12/2003

I find it hard to believe that jeffrey jeturian (the first filipino in ages to make it in competition in a MAJOR film festival---VENICE for TUHOG --) did not make it to the final 7.
If we want to raise tha standards of the local film industry, dapat ang criteria ay excellence. hindi dapat per genre ang distribution kundi excellence.
You mean to say mas magaling sa pelikula ni Jeffrey Jeturian (SANA PAGIBIG NA, PILA BALDE, TUHOG--all shown in more than 30 film festivals worldwide) ang Captain Barbell? Fantastik Man? Malikmata?
I dare say, mas maganda ang BRIDAL SHOWER sa Mano Po 2. Ang kapantay nya ay FILIPINAS, CRYING LADIES at HOMECOMING.
Dapat ay di gawing FESTIVAL ang mga pelikulang purely commercial since they can show these during the other times of the year. MMFF as it was originally conceived should showcase the BEST of the film industry and it should not be handled by a mediocre individuals (nearly all are politicians with no sense of excellence) many of them are either wanna be actors or has been/mediocre actors.
Sayang dahil maraming maganda sa MMFF this year.

I think the reason why they decided to show it in January is because its the type of film thats not for everyone. It targets a specific audience (adults). Hindi pang pamilya. So maybe thats why.

The festival should be called a children's festival kung puro pambata ang ipapalabas.
Festival calls for celebration. Not for mediocrity.

I agree with what other posters have mentioned. Right now, a lot of the comments being made as to which movies will get the awards and which actors/actresses will win are still baseless considering that the movies have not been shown yet. Of course, the write-ups in the newspapers are used as a machinery to get people wondering about the movies. However, I do realize that we all have our favorites but I do hope that as soon as the movies are shown, people can make predictions based on the merit of the movie and the acting of the actors/actresses and not just based on because they are our favorites.

Napanood ko na po ang Mano Po 2, Bridal Shower, Filipinas, Crying Ladies at Homecoming. May special screenings ang mga producers for critics and the press. i dare say maganda nga ang bridal shower, filipinas, at crying ladies. any of these 3 will bag the top prizes.
maganda ang individual performances ng ilan sa mano po 2 but the script is too loose. too many characters. walang focus. puro moments pero walang cohesive unity.
Homecoming is also badly scripted. sinayang si elizabeth oropesa. di ginamit ng tama.

Brilliant female
performances at MMFF ‘03
Thursday, 12 18, 2003
Mano Po 2: My Home, Homecoming, Crying Ladies, Filipinas, Captain Barbell, Fantastic Man and Malikmata made it to the Metro Manila Film Festival 2003's Magic Seven, while Gagamboy and Crying Ladies will open on Jan. 1. Brilliant performances of female stars mark this year's film fest, which will go down in history as the festival with generally excellent official entries.
(Note: With the biggest stars of the participating films in attendance, all nine finalists in the MMFF '03 will participate in the much-awaited Parade of Stars that kicks off the annual nationwide film fest. First stop is San Fernando, Pampanga today, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m.; Cagayan de Oro on Dec. 20; Cebu City on Dec. 22; and Manila on Dec. 24. A program follows after each parade.)
Alphabetically arranged according to surname, here are the female performances that make this year's MMFF a rare occasion:
Kris Aquino
Kris Aquino appears in Regal Entertainment's Mano Po 2: My Home as the young Sol, the first wife of Antonio Chui as played by Christopher de Leon. When Antonio returns to China, he has two daughters and, unknown to him, a son in Sol's womb. Kris appears in the flashback scenes, from the time they were courting to the time a daughter (Carmina Villaroel) meets a car accident and Antonio forcibly takes their two daughters, leaving with her Lean, whom he believes is Sol's child from an extramarital affair with a calesa driver (Zoren Legaspi).
Although Kris' role is not that big, it is a challenging one. With the recent emotional upheavals in her personal life, which took place before she started shooting her parts in Mano Po 2, Kris interprets the role of the young Sol with extraordinary depth, feeling more than acting. Kris was nominated as Best Actress in Urian for Fatima Buen. Had her role in Mano Po 2 been longer, she would easily merit a dual nomination as Best Actress with Susan Roces.
Dina Bonnevie
Dina Bonnevie as Tates sparkles in Seiko Film's Bridal Shower. An ad agency executive, Tates and best friend Katie (Cherie Pie Picache) decide to throw Sonia (Francine Prieto) a bridal shower when she announces her engagement. Tates, on the other hand, is in love with a man (Christian Vasquez) whose marriage is on the rocks. She feels her biological clock ticking and pressures her boyfriend to get married. She agrees to finance his annulment, but has a rude awakening when he reneges on their agreement and says he'd rather remain a bachelor. To get back at him, she comes up with a novel plan of revenge by billing him for all the money she spent on the annulment!
Besides her natural artistry, going for Dina to deliver this bright performance were sparkling direction of Jeffrey Jeturian and the synergy between scriptwriter Cris Martinez and script supervisor Armando "Bing" Lao and their Sex-In-The-City type of narrative. As Bridal Shower screens out of competition, Dina's not competing for the Best Actress plum, though her performance would easily make her a strong contender if she were.
Sharon Cuneta
As Stella Mate, Sharon Cuneta plays the role of a professional mourner in Unitel Pictures' Crying Ladies. She's one-third of a triumvirate made up of Choleng (Angel Aquino), who must cry to clean her conscience, and Doray (Hilda Koronel), who must cry for recognition. They are hired by Wilson (Eric Quizon) to show his filial duty to his dead father, no matter how estranged they had become when he was still alive. Stella cries not only to make a living but, more importantly, to prove to her son that she can keep a steady job and be a good provider to him.
Sharon tackles her black comedy role with exceptional brightness. Her role might not require heavy acting, such as she did in Madrasta (which, by the way, gave her a grand slam as Best Actress), but she handles it with uncommon ease and effectiveness, doing some scenes with over-the-top hysterics that will keep you smiling or laughing depending on your Emotional Quotient. Sharon might yet pull a surprise a Best Actress win, that is, if the MMFF judges are enlightened enough to know that best performances do not necessarily mean heavy acting.
Elizabeth Oropesa
With her eldest daughter (Alessandra de Rossi) returning from Canada not with the SARS virus, Elizabeth Oropesa plays the role of a problematic small-town mother in Teamwork Productions, Cinema Partners and Kidlat Entertainment's Homecoming. This compounds her present worries of being separated from her husband and having a shabu-user for a son. As her family gets ostracized by the community, she confronts her problems head-on, leading to an unexpected revelation.
Elizabeth combines minimalist acting with some distinctively dramatic moments and comes up with a refreshing performance that merits recognition.
Zsa Zsa Padilla
Lu-Shui is the Chinese woman that Antonio's parents duped him to marry. As a matter of Chinese honor and tradition, Antonio goes through the forced marriage with much reluctance. But Lu-Shui loves Antonio; she is willing to live with him in Manila, a place totally alien to her, and share the house of his first wife. From a shy, withdrawn, obedient young girl, she transforms into a sensitive and headstrong woman capable of facing traumas in her life.
Zsa Zsa had to learn to speak Chinese as required by her role. Her sensitive portrayal of Lui-Shui's discriminated character also merits recognition.
Susan Roces
Although the roles of the three wives (okay, two wives and one mistress if you insist) are generally balanced in Mano Po 2, it is the character of Sol (short for Soledad) around which the grand family drama revolves. The mature Sol, as played by Susan Roces, is the pure Filipina who suffers most from her marriage to Antonio. She is suspected by her husband of having been unfaithful. And when he dies, she is suspected as having masterminded his killing. As such, the role provides dramatic highlights that only a competent actress could perform.
Without doubt, Susan is such an actress. Having won Best Actress awards for Maligno and Gumising Ka, Maruja, she proves her skill anew in Mano Po 2: My Home. She goes through a range of emotions, interpreting them with the proper emotional depth and physical manifestation, making it one of the most brilliant performances in this year's MMFF. She just might end up as the film fest's Best Actress!
Alessandra de Rossi
The Azucena and Hubog Best Supporting Actress plays the lead in Gil Portes' new masterpiece Homecoming. She plays Abigail, the sophisticated daughter who worked in Canada as a caregiver and came home for vacation without knowing that she has contracted the dreaded SARS virus. The sickness makes her an outcast, and long-time sweetheart (James Blanco) abandons her.
Alessandra is subdued, hiding the pain inside with a calm demeanor. I have no doubt Alessandra's performance in Homecoming would cement her stature as a great actress and as an international talent. An instinctive actress, she never fails to deliver. If in Mga Munting Tinig (Small Voices) she created a multi-dimensional character with her understated acting, she reverses our ideas of how a soul in torment must be acted out in Homecoming with her silent attack.
Maricel Soriano
Maricel Soriano plays the eldest child in the Filipinas family. The story is told from her point of view, the typical "ate" who is selfless and obedient, sacrificing her own happiness, including a sweetheart (Daniel Fernando), for the sake of her widowed mother (Armida Siguion-Reyna) and siblings (Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, Aiko Melendrez, Victor Neri and Wendell Ramos). Living with her mother, she takes care of a sickly niece (Sarah Geronimo) and adopted child (Sunshine Dizon) while running the family business. The Filipinas family holds a reunion during Christmas, which starts out as a happy occasion. The mood changes when old wounds are opened and new conflicts arise. This breaks the heart of their mother, who does her best to keep the family in tact despite their differences.
Maricel delivers a sympathetic character, an impressive transformation from her mataray attack of many of her previous cinematic roles. Bringing her another time with the award-winning team of director Joel Lamangan, scriptwriter Roi Iglesias and production designer Tatus Aldana, Maricel's sensitive and realistic performance in Filipinas makes her a strong contender in the best actress category.
Lorna Tolentino
After a grand slam for Narito ang Puso Ko and other Best Actress awards for Maging Akin Ka Lamang, Abakada...Ina and Luksong Tinik, Lorna Tolentino tackles another challenging role in Mano Po 2. She portrays Belinda, the Fil-Chinese mestiza who wants to control the business empire of her husband (Christopher de Leon), to the detriment of the two other wives (Susan Roces and Zsa Zsa Padilla) and their children. Belinda wants to assure the future of her two children, Alessandra de Rossi and Richard Gutierrez, both of whom give her problems.
Always the consummate actress, Lorna approaches the role as an insecure woman who loves her children well, but not wisely. A character after her own heart, she shows that she's human after a tragic incident made her realize her own vulnerability. Her interpretation of Belinda is multi-layered and she should easily merit a nomination. Who knows, the MMFF judges might realize that the roles of the three wives are equally, superbly interpreted, and give a three-way win to Susan, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Lorna!

I like the performances of Maricel Soriano, Susan Roces and Sharon Cuneta.
Sharon Cuneta's role does not require a heavy acting and she does it with flying colors but not enough for a best actress award.
Of all the three actresses mentioned, Maricel Soriano's role as Yolanda Filipinas renders the most believable and realistic character. She was superb as Yolanda Filipinas but i don't think she will win. Why? i dunno...
Susan Roces might bag the Best Actress award. :)

The coming Metro-Manila Filmfest is surely more exciting than the previous years because we have fairly good entries from award-winning name directors like Gil Portes, Joel Lamangan, Joey Reyes, and Jeffrey Jeturian. But it will mainly be a serious competition among actresses because the films where the lead roles are played by actors are all action-fantasies: "Captain Barbell," "Fantastic Man," and "Gagamboy."
The other six entries are more serious acting vehicles. We have three straight dramas: "Homecoming," "Filipinas" and "Mano Po 2." One comedy-drama: "Crying Ladies." One sex-comedy: "Bridal Shower." One drama-thriller: "Malikmata."
In the best actor category, only Christopher de Leon has a serious lead role as the Chinese patriarch with three wives in "Mano Po 2." Richard Gomez in "Filipinas" plays more of a supporting role than a lead one. It's in the lead actress category where its is difficult to predict who'd win. In "Filipinas," Maricel Soriano and Armida Siguion Reyna are sure to be top contenders. In "Mano Po 2," it's Susan Roces, Lorna Tolentino and Zsa Padilla. In "Crying Ladies," it's Sharon Cuneta who'll vie for the best actress award. In "Bridal Shower," Dina Bonnevie, Cherry Pie Picache, and Francine Prieto all play meaty lead roles. In "Homecoming," both Alessandra de Rossi and Elizabeth Oropesa will compete as the balikbayan daughter and her mom who face the scourge of SARS.
In the best supporting actress category, Hilda Koronel is a shoo-in as the comical former movie star who cannot forget her past in "Crying Ladies." For best supporting actor, our bet is Victor Neri as the committed labor leader and activist in "Filipinas."
You can start guessing now as to who the winners would be. But for you to be in a better position to pass judgment, make sure you have seen all the entries and don't just allow fan mentality to rule, okay?

may isang movie na akong napanood.....and i'm happy to say na napakaganda ng movie sa sobrang PUHNGIT... *irap to d highest degree*

I singled-out FILIPINAS not only because i'm a true blooded Maricel Soriano fan but i believed that the film is a must-see for anyone who enjoys great movies.
I must warn you though, this is one of those movies that can tug at your heart-strings. Some parts of the movie try to show the harsh realities of life thru the characters portrayed, and I couldn't help but show compassion towards some of them myself.
I highly recommend this movie to all age groups and I hope that everyone gets the chance to view this one! :moviebuff:

crying ladies deserve to be rated A.but there were films who deserved an A pero they didnt get the rating,
one factor that helped crying ladies in getting the rating---the head of this evaluation board is laurice guillen.
laurice directed the so-so AMERICAN ADOBO--produced by UNITEL's tony gloria.
merong di nakakakuha ng A kasi pinupulitika nina laurie and company.
sana they will give similar ratings to films that truly desrve it.
as i say, crying ladies is outstanding. pero sana laurice wasnt the head of the board that screened it.

Manila Bulletin, dated 12/20/2003
Filipinas’ is deeply moving
“The tears simply flowed, I couldn’t help it. What a deeply moving film.”
That was Prof. Emy Abuan speaking after the press preview of “Filipinas,” Viva’s star-studded entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival. To which two other ladies, Nora Calderon and Julie Bonifacio, agreed wholeheartedly. “Naka-relate ako sa istorya. Ang feeling ko ako si Tita Midz (Armida Siguion-Reyna),” says Nora, loving and caring “lola,” aunt, and sister to a large family. Julie, incumbent president of the Philippine Movie Press Club, agrees, adding, “Lahat naman tayo may kanya-kanyang problema.
Ed de Leon believes that “Filipinas” is best picture material, “Very well directed by Joel (Lamangan) and well acted. But I love Maricel as the sacrificing eldest sister, pang-best actress.”
To which Butch Roldan adds, “Yes, Maricel is very good, but so are the other stars. Tita Midz as the matriarch, Victor Neri and Richard Gomez as the feuding brothers, Wendell Ramos as the ill-fated ‘bunso.’ Ditto Aiko Melendez as the stubborn daughter and, of course, Dawn Zulueta as the guilt-ridden caregiver. It’s a worthy comeback for Dawn.”
Is “Filipinas” based on a true story?
“Direk Joel reveals some of the characters are real, culled from his own family.
During the martial law years, Joel was, indeed, jailed for four years. But he overcame the trials in life, including being tortured, and went on to great heights as award-winning filmmaker, recognized here and abroad. He turned out to be the pillar of the family – but that is another story, perhaps even a movie.
Written by Roy Iglesias, “Filipinas” is rightly billed as the drama event of the year, any year. It also stars Raymond Bagatsing, Richard Quan, Daniel Fernando, Sunshine Dizon, Anne Curtis, Mikel Campos, Denden Patricio, Jim Pebangco, Tanya Garcia, and introduces Sarah Geronimo who sings the theme, “Paano Kita Pasasalamatan.”
“Filipinas” opens Dec. 25 in Metro Manila and key cities nationwide, including San Fernando (Pampanga), Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro.

Na reorganize ang board. Now she was appointed by GMA.

definitely one of the best performances of Maricel Soriano - here's wishing a GRAND SLAM Best Actress award for her multi-layered performance as Yolanda Filipinas.
It’s a movie that always has had the power to show us beautiful dreams and horrible nightmares, and to give us experiences we deliberately leave normal life to be a part of. This is good family fare, and a story that everyone can be a part of and appreciate. And this one actually happened.

Looking for Mr. Right
by Dolly Anne Carvajal
A COMEDY of manners about three women struggling to find the perfect mate in a world of imperfect men. That is the story of "Bridal Shower," the entry of Seiko Films in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, whose last directorial project was 2001's "Tuhog," "Bridal Shower" stars Dina Bonnevie, Cherrie Pie Picache and Francine Prieto as advertising executives in search for Mr. Right.
Tates (Dina Bonnevie) feels her biological clock ticking. She's in love, but the man of her dreams is married, although his marriage is on the rocks. Because she knows time is running out, she offers to shoulder the cost of his annulment, in exchange for a promise that they will get married. She's so desperate to get married that she hires a lawyer, bribes judges, and spends her time and money on getting the annulment for him, thinking that it is the way to get what she wants.
Katie (Cherrie Pie Picache) is overweight, plain-looking and suffering from a bad case of low self-esteem. Unable to land a man, she resorts to trying to find one on the Internet.
When their friend Sonia (Francine Prieto) announces she is pregnant and contemplating marriage, Katie and Tates decide to throw her a bridal shower. Katie and her friends visit a gay bar to hire a macho dancer for the shower. Unknown to Katie, it is there that she will find the love she's been looking for.
Sonia, the liberated one, finds herself pregnant, but because she has two boyfriends, she is not sure which one is the father. Does she choose the poor artist whom she loves, or the rich man who can provide security but not love?
Also starring are Christian Vasquez, Rodel Velayo (in another gay role), Alfred Vargas (in his first lead role), and newcomers Juancho Valentino, winner of the Bodyshots 2000 competition, and Douglas Robinson, a runner-up in the 2002 Mossimo Bikini Summit.
Chris Martinez wrote the script, supervised by award-winning Armando "Bing" Lao.
"It's basically a comedy of manners with light dramatic touches," says Jeturian, who also directed "Pila Balde." "But beyond the humor, the narrative voice of the movie is equally important. Aside from being entertaining, it also has to be meaningful. I think we've achieved that in this movie. I expect it to pull some surprises during the awards night."

Jeffrey Jeturian's BRIDAL SHOWER Special Preview
Photos from Philippines
Imagine Amy, Susie, and Tessie as the sexually liberated working girls perpetually in pursuit of Mr. Right in the new Millennium. This was how Mabuhay Beauties' Jeffrey Jeturian presented the three principal characters portrayed by Dina Bonnevie, Cherry Pie Picache, and Francine Prieto a.k.a. Anna Marie Falcon (whose agent is yes, Mabuhay's own Ces Evangelista) in his comeback directorial vehicle, Bridal Shower, Seiko Films' entry in the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival where a Special Preview was held at ABS-CBN's Studio 1 last night (Dec. 16th). Bonnevie and Picache deliver tour de force performance without the unnecessary hysterics while Prieto gives subtle yet effective characterization of a young woman with the classic problem - torn between two lovers. Male leads Christian Vasquez, fast rising stars Alfred Vargas, Douglas Robinson, and Juancho Valentino also cook up the big screen with powerful, unforgettable "meaty" performances (most especially Robinson's) while Rodel Velayo is delightful giving effortless portrayal as the gay confidant of the three women.
Seiko's Robbie Tan has carved out a new Cesar Montano in the person of Alfred Vargas, shining brightly from beginning onto the film's finale. Likewise sewing up outstanding performances are veterans Boots Anson Roa and Gina Pareno. Senen Dizon, Bodyshots 2001 finalist makes a surprise appearance along with 2 Mabuhay Beauties' staff members (guess who?). With the movie guaranteed to put you on the brink of tears (from laughter, what else?), Jeturian has just layered the icing on the cake on what seems to be a truly golden, memorable year for Mabuhay Beauties. Congratulations, Jeffrey!

Hagalpakan to the max sa 'Bridal Shower'
Nakaaaliw, nakababaliw
(Allan Diones)
Isang well-made, wacky sex comedy ang Bridal Shower.
Talk about girl power! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Sexy si Alfred in his skimpy trunks at pasable ang kanyang macho dancing scenes.
Chris is a Palanca awardee who directs stage plays. Estudyante siya ni Mr. Armando Lao (who served as the script supervisor of the movie).
He’s really one of the best young filmmakers in the industry today at saludo kami sa talento niya!

I have seen MANO PO 2 - Pangit siya.
I heard from some friends that BRIDAL SHOWER is for pure entertainment only. Totoo ba yun? I like movies that can provide moral values.

if a movie contains good things in life, will it pass for a good movie? if it doesn't , is it a bad movie? i don't think so. it's like saying na those hallmark greeting card rhymes are poetry. there are a lot of factors to be considered to categorize a movie bad or not. jeturian's bridal shower is a comedy of manners. if you like movies that provide moral values, ask the catholic church to produce films.

In this day and age, i think "moral values" is problematic.
I think there is such a thing as GOOD and "good." and BAD and"bad."
A good film must uplift the human spirit. But it should not be didactic (preachy).

'Crying Ladies'
gets 'A' rating
Posted: 7:39 PM (Manila Time) | Dec. 20, 2003
By Marinel R. Cruz
Inquirer News Service
THE CINEMA Evaluation Board last Thursday granted an A rating to "Crying Ladies," which stars Sharon Cuneta in her first participation in the Metro Manila Film Festival.
The A rating means the movie is entitled to a 100-percent tax rebate.
"Crying Ladies," produced by Unitel Pictures, is second only to Star Cinema's "Tanging Yaman," released in 2000, to be given the highest rating by the CEB.
CEB board member Butch Francisco told Inquirer Entertainment last Friday, "'Crying Ladies' is an intelligent film. It is not your typical Filipino movie. It's unpredictable and well-directed.
"My only hope is for people to watch it. The money it could get from the rebate could be bankrolled into another movie of the same quality."
Francisco, however, said the tax rebate would take effect after Jan. 3, the last day of the 10-day Metro Manila Film Festival.
Tony Gloria, who is also the producer of the critically acclaimed "American Adobo," produced the film. It is based on the Palanca award-winning screenplay by veteran commercial director Mark Meily, who made his first film feature in "Crying Ladies."
Sharon said she is very grateful for the A rating.
"I'm also very proud of Unitel, Direk Mark, my costars and the whole family," she told Inquirer Entertainment. "We're all inspired anew."
According to Francisco, this is the first time that a director's first movie gets an A rating. Only veteran directors, like Ishmael Bernal ("Hinugot sa Langit"), Mike de Leon ("Sister Stella L") and Laurice Guillen ("Tanging Yaman"), got the same rating before, he pointed out.
"Marami ngang director diyan, hindi man lamang maka-B rating," Francisco said. "This movie is something we can all be proud of. If this makes money at the box office, it means there's still hope for this industry to produce good films."
"Crying Ladies" is about three professional mourners in Chinatown, paid to cry at Chinese funerals and burials. It also features Hilda Koronel, Angel Aquino, Eric Quizon and child actor Julio Pacheco.
The CEB, formerly known as the Film Ratings Board, evaluates local films and rewards the best productions with amusement-tax rebates to encourage producers to make better, more significant films.
Veteran theater actress and director Zenaida Amador is the CEB chair.
"I hope the film succeeds both critically and commercially so that its success will encourage others to produce spiritually enriching movies next year," Francisco said.

as i say, crying ladies is outstanding. pero sana laurice wasnt the head of the board that screened it.
FYI bago manggalaiti, Laurice Guillen isn't the head of the Cinema Evaluation Board. I think before, she was.
Tsaka they don't give out A ratings just because the movie is excellent. It sould be different AND excellent, well-crafted as others might say. It challenges not only other movies, but also the audience and the whole industry itself. As the previous post notes, the A rating comes only once in a blue moon. The last A-rated film was Tanging Yaman, which actually became the blueprint of the latest (and also successful) family-oriented movies.
For the other MMFF 2003 movies, oo nga't maganda, pero iba pa rin ang nakaisip ng Crying Ladies for it's truly one of its kind. I'm no Sharonian here, but then credits really go to the wise production team and perfect acting ensemble of Crying Ladies.
Just my opinion, letting you guys know.
May the film festival showcase Filipino excellence.

Subject: To those who watched Filipinas...
Ok lang ang movie so so so lang but as always who can beat Maricel's acting? Ano ba yan! Dawn and Maricel and indeed are beautiful even with a little make-up. She is too beautiful to wear a heavy make-up! I watched the premiere night at UP theater.

In this day and age, i think "moral values" is problematic.
I think there is such a thing as GOOD and "good." and BAD and"bad."
A good film must uplift the human spirit. But it should not be didactic (preachy).
i haven't seen BRIDAL SHOWER dahlin but i'm planning to watch it coz i'm a Jeffrey Jeturian fan.

yes! its true :)
Mano Po 2 was a joke. The film is definitely a slap-in-the face of the original. A few of my buddies saw this one before me. They warned me that it was bad -- really bad -- but I never could've imagined just how terrible it truly was.
The original Mano Po was OK as compared to the sequel, in my opinion the epitome of an effective tsinoy film. Heck, for that matter even several of the sequels had their moments, however few those moments were. But this piece of trash . . . what more can I say, other than "Why did the people who made this movie even bother showing up?!"
I apologize if I sound bitter. But as a fan of the classic Mano Po that is the original, I find drivel such as this personally insulting.
I'm a TSINAY per se and i know how it goes.....

FILIPINAS is Outstanding....
id able to watch the premiere night of this moving family relationships movie. i feel it's realistic. ang ganda
Joel Lamangan
definitely one of the best performances of Maricel Soriano - here's wishing a GRAND SLAM Best Actress award for her multi-layered performance as Yolanda Filipinas.
It’s a movie that always has had the power to show us beautiful dreams and horrible nightmares, and to give us experiences we deliberately leave normal life to be a part of. This is good family fare, and a story that everyone can be a part of and appreciate. And this one actually happened.

Ok lang ang movie so so so lang but as always who can beat Maricel's acting? Ano ba yan! Dawn and Maricel and indeed are beautiful even with a little make-up. She is too beautiful to wear a heavy make-up! I watched the premiere night at UP theater.
Kita naman ninyo siya sa mga iniindorso niyang products, she looks very good and beautiful.
Congrats Maricel! You're still the no.1 actress among your contemporaries. Hindi ka pa rin kumukupas. I love you , Maricel!

On the other hand, would it be safe to say that Filipinas has a better edge compared to Mano Po 2 in the Best Picture category? Has anyone seen Mano Po 2? I’ve read that Erik Matti’s focus is more on stunning visuals and cheezy dialogues but, in its entirety, the film somehow lacks something. Obviously, I haven’t seen both films ‘coz walang scheduled movie premiere dito sa Cebu. I would really appreciate if you can give more of your reviews on the film.

I'm a TSINAY per se and i know how it goes.....

correct me if im wrong.alam ko,lahat ng movies ay kailangan i-classify,that's the job of MTRCB.pero kung gusto mo ipa-rate ang movie,i-submit mo ang movie sa CEB.hindi lahat ng movies ay dumadaan sa CEB.in that case, hindi nagpa-rate ang FILIPINAS.with all those positive reviews for FILIPINAS,im sure makakakuha yan ng A or B rating kung pina-rate sa CEB.

i think BRIDAL SHOWER's going to be this festival's most pleasant surprise. After all, director Jeffrey Jetturian is no neophyte when it comes to awards. And I bet it will garner a lot of moviegoers since it had received an R-13 rating, so the younger generation will have a chance to watch it.

i'm one of the lucky few who was able to watch bridal shower even before its premier night and i must say, ang galing talaga! cherrie pie picache was fantastic, although the two other leads, dina b and francine prieto werent far behind acting-wise. sobrang nakakatawa, naka-relate ako sa film -- there'd be some instances in the movie where i'd point out: "ako yan ah!" hehe. but well, u gotta see for yourselves so u'll understand what i'm talking about. i'm gonna watch bridal shower again when it opens this new year.

These are just my guess.
Best Picture - Crying Ladies (Unitel) Rated 'A' by CEB
2nd Best Picture - Filipinas (Viva)
3rd Best Picture - Homecoming (Columbia Tri-Star)
Best Actress - Sharon Cuneta (Crying Ladies) . Maricel Soriano might tie with Sharon on this one. Susan Roces might come as a surprise.
Best Actor - Christopher de Leon (Mano Po 2)
Best Supp Actress - Zsa Zsa Padilla (Mano Po 2) or Hilda Koronel (Crying Ladies) alternative choice: Cherry Pie Picache (Bridal Shower)
Best Supp Actor - Richard Gomez (Filipinas) or Ricky Davao (Crying Ladies)
Best Director - Mark Meilly (Crying Ladies)
Best Special Effects - (Captain Barbell)
Best Story - Roi Iglesias (either one of his movie, Filipinas or Mano Po 2)
Best Cinematography would go to Mano Po 2.
Other technical awards would go to different entries. I think no one would dominate this year, unlike last year na halos Mano Po ang nanalo. Unless.....

My fearless forecast....
Best Picture: FILIPINAS
Dark Horse: Crying Ladies (Crying is a well-crafted movie but its like a stranger to me.
Best Actress: MARICEL SORIANO - superb and realistic portrayal!
Dark Horse: Sharon Cuneta (bago kasi ang role for Sharon kaya exciting for the others but she was eclipsed by Hilda Koronel in some scenes. My vote goes to maricel)
Best Actor: CHRISTOPHER de LEON (Mano Po2)
Dark Horse: Richard Gomez (Filipinas)
Best Cinematography: MANO PO2
Best Supporting Actor: VICTOR NERI (Filipinas)
Best Supporting Actress: HILDA KORONEL (Crying Ladies)
Best Director: MARK MEILY or JOEL LAMANGAN

This is my own opinion that I don't think that the quality of a movie will be dependent whether they got A or B rating from the CEB. Just like Ariel said, Filipinas was not submitted to CEB for review because of time constraints or other unforeseen circumstances. But it doesn't make it a less great movie. Its still us, the moviegoing public that will decide what is a better movie and not. I believe that with or without the drumbeating of the "rating thing" Filipinas will speak from its own merits and prove that its worth seeing not to mention the flawless and haunting performance of Maricel Soriano.

Stiff competition to mark MMFF Gabi ng Parangal
Tuesday, 12 23, 2003
Manila Film Festival resulted in a sweep by Regal Entertainment's Mano Po, there will be stiff competition at this year's Gabi ng Parangal, slated on Dec. 27. The generally excellent quality of entries at this year's filmfest will give judges a hard time choosing the winners. Assuming, of course, that the judges will not play politics as such practice will necessarily distort the results.
Hotly contested categories are Best Film, Best Actress and Best Director:
Despite the generally high quality of entries, the best of them will occupy the high end of the shortlist. These are Mano Po 2 (Regal Entertainment), Homecoming (Teamwork Productions/Cinema Partners/Kidlat Pictures), Crying Ladies (Unitel Pictures), Bridal Shower (Seiko Films) and Filipinas (Viva Films). Mano Po 2 will lord over Crying Ladies, Homecoming and Bridal Shower for converting what is essentially a family drama into an epic scale. It successfully blends all the disparate elements of filmmaking to come up with a great Filipino movie. Crying Ladies, on the other hand, is capable of pulling a surprise win for the same reasons Mano Po 2 will win, but in a smaller scale.
The strongest candidate in the Best Actress category are Susan Roces (Mano Po 2), Sharon Cuneta (Crying Ladies), Zsa Zsa Padilla (Mano Po 2), Maricel Soriano (Filipinas), Dina Bonnevie (Bridal Shower) and Elizabeth Oropesa (Homecoming). It is likely that Susan will bag the award as her performance will be taken as an acting triumph and tribute to a truly great actress. Zsa Zsa could easily tie with Susan if the judges don't make strict differences between their performances. Sharon has a strong chance. She successfully turns a dramatic role into comedy without being conscious about it, transforming herself into an entirely new character different from previous roles.
It's the young directors who have steered this year's MMFF toward unparalleled excellence: Erik Matti (Mano Po 2), Mark Meily (Crying Ladies), Jeffrey Jeturian (Bridal Shower) and Mac Alejandre (Captain Barbell by Premier Productions). Collectively, they show what Filipino films could become given the correct ambition and right logistics. But it is Erik Matti who makes the most fully realized movie and the Best Director Award will go to him. He's closely followed by the rest. If the judges will be made up of babyboomers who think of filmmaking as sacred art, Gil Portez (Homecoming) and Joel Lamangan (Filipinas) are strong contenders.
Besides these major awards, everybody has a keen interest on the filmfest's top-grossers. Buzzstation thinks it will be a toss between Mano Po 2, Fantastic Man and Captain Barbell going up and down the top three slots. Fantastic Man and Captain Barbell will fight for first and second top-grossers on the first three days of the filmfest, with Fantastic Man maintaining the edge because of bright photography and extensive promotion. But it could be easily be displaced by Captain Barbell for the same period for its star value (Bong Revilla Jr., Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid), state-of-the-art special effects and CGIs (computer generated images) and authentic Pinoy superheroes (Captain Barbell, Darna and Lastikman in one movie)! Mano Po 3 will be third until the third day, but will be the top-grosser on the fourth day when it is selected as Best Picture. If word-of-mouth that Crying Ladies and Bridal Shower have mass appeal (which they have) spreads fast enough, one could easily occupy any of the top three berths.
Sure winners in the acting categories are Christopher de Leon (Mano Po 2) for Best Actor, Hilda Koronel (Crying Ladies) for Best Supporting Actress, Victor Neri (Filipinas) for Best Supporting Actor and Julio Pacheco (Crying Ladies) for Best Child Actor.
Breakthrough
This filmfest will also mark the breakthrough use of two new positions in local filmmaking, the acting director and the character movement director. As Mano Po 2's acting director, Boots Plata assisted the director in rehearsing the actors and making sure they interpreted their respective roles according to the agreed interpretation and character movement. Douglas Nierras as Captain Barbell's character movement director assisted the director in ensuring that actors move naturally in the most difficult action that they are assigned to undertake, for example, flying. Both are experts in their respective fields, Boots being a director and Douglas being a dancer/choreographer.
Must inhibit
One of the judges of the forthcoming MMFF frequents movie presscons and functions. Why she's doing this is entirely her own reason. It's very likely she does not have a hidden agenda, but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth upon the realization that she's hobnobbing with front- and back-of-the camera people of the works on which she's supposed to pass judgment. She's probably doing this in relation to her work as a reporter for a broadsheet, but common sense dictates she must inhibit from such a practice. Since we do not know the kind of damage she has done to the board of judges' credibility, it's better off without her.
Unfair criticisms
Advance screenings of new films is double-edged. It can work in terms of favorable comments and it can backfire by way of unfair criticisms. Such is the case of Joel Lamangan's Filipinas, which remains the most screened MMFF official entry to date, with Gil Portez's Homecoming as second. Bien Lumbera praised it, while Conrado de Quiroz panned it. One of the common criticisms about the movie is how it has too many major plots and how this makes it boring viewing, a contradiction of filmmaking rules for it to be regarded as good film.
It looks like a valid comment until I discussed it with my mom, Remedios O. Cruz, and she commented that it must have been a devise by the scriptwriter (Roi Iglesias) and director to put across the reality that in our society everything is a major issue, which is why we're irretrievably divided. How true! Having indirectly shown how this make us "magulo" as a people, it was easy on my part to appreciate this allegorical movie. This is probably where Bien Lumbera is coming from, something that those who failed to appreciate it did not understand.
No advance screening for 'Fantastic Man'
Actor/producer Vic Sotto says Fantastic Man, the Octo Arts and M-Zet Production co-prod which is one MMFF's Magic Seven this year, will not have an advance screening. His reason: Piracy! He says that the usual source of local pirated movie tapes is advance film screenings. Although he did not compare his entry to the others, true to his unassuming ways, he did say that Fantastic Man has more powers than Lastikman, which allowed them to make it more action-driven.

'Just saw Bridal Shower by Jeffrey Jeturian. It was one helluva funny movie. Though it can't/wont be a Jeturian classic in years to come, kudos to Seiko for gambling on Jeffrey for its face-lifting program. Jeturian is such a novelty in Philippine cinema. He could do anything from drama to satire to comedy without compromising his artistry. Viva and Star Cinema are you reading this?(as if...) If you wanna be respected by film buffs from UP to Titus, hire Jeffrey!
It got a B-rating but the director is not affected by this. He is more excited to show his film abroad which is already invited by Singapore and Udine (Italy) Film Fests together with Mario O'hara's Babae sa Breakwater which I consider will lead the awards race next year.

CRYING LADIES......ang daming good reviews
Vipguhrl
Dec 24, 2003, 08:42 AM
"Naniniwala ako na if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.

FILM WATCH
By Dennis Ladaw
Filipinas
Dysfunctional movie
THE premise of Joel Lamangan’s Filipinas looks interesting on the surface. A wealthy, landed family of an undisclosed province is plagued by tragedy, feuds and financial problems. Each of the six siblings have something to ***** about. Their surname is unique—they so happen to be the once illustrious Filipinas family.
With Filipinas, screenwriter Roy Iglesias attempts to make this movie family a sort of microcosm of the entire country. Every family crisis is an effect of the issues pervading the country.
Armida Siguion-Reyna plays the Filipinas grand matriarch. She’s a widow and she has six grown children. Maricel Soriano is the spinster—she’s not very bright and she’s doomed to care for her aging mom.
Richard Gomez is the eldest son. He’s been based in Los Angeles but nothing seems to work for him there. His wife has left him and he lost his job, so he flies back home to think things over. Victor Neri is the family’s resident leftist/activist, while Wendell Ramos is a lieutenant in the Philippine army. Dawn Zulueta is a caregiver in Israel who comes home when a friend is killed in a bombing. And there’s Aiko Melendez who’s all set to marry a Hindu played by Raymond Bagatsing.
For once, the Filipinas family is complete when Gomez and Zulueta come home and there’s a decision to be made about the family business, which has been hemor_rhaging. Thus, the bickering and fighting begins, and coupled with the past, childhood grudges, the movie turns in an endless pa-rade of screa-ming mat-ches and con-frontations.
Iglesias has written in too many child-ren in the Fili_pinas family. More children translate to more prob_lems which lead to more confrontations and more crying scenes than in Crying Ladies. Three children would have been enough. And like Dekada ’70 and Mga Munting Tinig, the movie is a smorgasbord of national issues and a litany of pontifications. There may be less of these in Filipinas but with too many siblings around, the whines and groans are still shoved down the throats of the audience.
And again, like Dekada ’70, we have a family that has a resident activist and a resident defender of the country. This has been sold before and we didn’t buy it. Filipinas even adds two OFWs which is complete overkill. Indeed, Iglesias concocted each sibling to represent every social ill but this doesn’t work in a straight, realistic drama. It might have worked as a surreal drama or a black comedy or even a horror, but not with Lamangan’s sleek and straightforward presentation.
The Filipinas family might have been more convincing had Armida Siguion—Reyna been written as a manananggal. After all, her character represents the establish_ment that’s made a mess of the coun_try. Having a mother who can fly out in the night is just as con-vincing as having a leftist brother and right-wing brother in one fa_mily. Latin American directors have always done this and Lamangan would have done well to follow this route. I even wouldn’t have accused him of being a copycat.
As it is, the matriarch isn’t fully explained. Like how could one woman raise a half dozen nitpicking nitwits? Filipinas thus plays like a glossy telenovela with political issues tacked on to make the movie seem like an important and relevant piece of work. Each actor acts up a storm as every scene appears to have designed to be a clip for Saturday evening’s MMFF awards night (the louder you shout, the more chances of winning). It’s amazing that with all the histrionics in the movie, the cast still manages to keep its dignity almost intact.
Dawn Zulueta comes off best as the quietly suffering OFW from Israel. Everything she does is just right and she looks so pretty and sympathetic. She makes the movie worth watching. Her confrontation with Maricel Soriano is exquisitely staged in a kitchen by Lamangan. It’s the film finest moment. The conflict between these two sisters would have been enough to provide enough drama for Filipinas though it would have been too similar to Marvin’s Room (the finale actually is also reminiscent of this movie which starred Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton).
Soriano does her pained, quiet suffering shtick to great effect but she eventually shows everyone who the mother of all scream queens is at the movie’s climax. She makes Siguion-Reyna, so perfectly cast as her mother, seem like a retired nun!
Although Lamangan has too many overwrought stories to tell in Filipinas, he delivers them in a quickly paced manner. He directs this one with fluidity and polish.
Still, its hard to overlook the story’s many flaws. The most jarring of them is sob sub-story of the girl played by Sarah Geronimo. She’s supposed to be Siguion-Reyna’s granddaughter and Richard Gomez’s son. Gomez migrated to California, taking with him his two older children and leaving Geronimo because she’s too sickly to survive in Los Angeles!
And since because the two older children were raised in the States, the actors who play them are mestizo types. Meanwhile, poor little Ms. Geronimo, left in the Philippines, looks every inch a Filipina. Is the weather that different in California

More children translate to more prob_lems which lead to more confrontations and more crying scenes than in Crying Ladies. nyahahah! start destroying other movies. anyways, "b" rating na rin ang FILIPINAS just like other movies whereas crying ladies "a" daw ang rating. galit si erik matti. there's something wrong here di nga lang niya masabi sabi. did politics play its part here?

goodluck to maricel.

so far napanood ko lang ang filipinas.Pero I'm also planning to watch Mano Po2. Crying Ladies? VCD nalang.
But actually, i bet magaganda ang Filipinas, Crying Ladies, and Mano Po 2.
It's very different from her Vera from Mano Po 1 last year. Hope this will be her time to shine.

Unpredictable best actress award in the MMFF
Monday, December 22, 2003
THE Metro Manila filmfest is more exciting than the previous years because we have good entries from award-winning name directors like Gil Portes, Joel Lamangan, Joey Reyes, and Jeffrey Jeturian.
But it will mainly be a competition among actresses because the films where the lead roles are played by actors are all action-fantasies: "Captain Barbell," "Fantastic Man," and "Gagamboy."
It’s in the lead actress category where it’s difficult to predict who’d win. In "Filipinas," Maricel Soriano and Armida Siguion Reyna are sure to be top contenders. In "Mano Po 2," it’s Susan Roces, Lorna Tolentino and Zsa Padilla. In "Crying Ladies," it’s Sharon Cuneta who’ll vie for the best actress award.
In the best supporting actress category, Hilda Koronel is a shoo-in as the comical former movie star who cannot forget her past in "Crying Ladies." For best supporting actor, our bets are Victor Neri as the committed labor leader and activist in "Filipinas" and Eric Quizon as the Chinese guy in "Crying Ladies."
You can start guessing now as to who the winners would be. But for you to be in a better position to pass judgment, make sure you have seen all the entries and don’t just your fan mentality rule, okay?

A, ganyan pala, akala ko ikaw ang gumawa. Pero in fairness, I don't like this review, kasi hindi naman yan review e, na mention niya halos lahat ng pangngalan, e who needs it anyway. The point is, the author thinks na deserving lahat ng tao na namention niya, e ano pa ba ang purpose ng Metro Manila Film Fest, why don't they just give each of the nominees an award. Get my point?
The person with power and money takes away the trophy Kaya hindi makapagtatatka if Sharon will bring home the trophy.
Sigh... ganyan talaga ang society ngayon, let's just face the reality1

Pinakamalalaking Bituin, Kalahok Sa Mmff
