Most importantly, I can see that they have a very good culture (sana hindi ako nagkamali).:) So far, so good... masaya ako dito.:D Btw, saan ka ba nagwowork?

hi everyone!

is it hard to do Tech Support for the ISP client? i don't have a Comp Sci degree but am techie enough to understand most ISP networking problems, but i still count it as a blessing that West hired me for Tech Support instead of relegating me to CS where most of my experience is based on. do really need to have had a degree to do this work, meaning for those who took up CompSci, is it easier for you to do this kind of work?

i signed up with West last week but isn't scheduled to take the training until the end of the month. i know that Accent training is only per allowance-- and its taxable at that-- how much do you really take home out of the P1400?

btw, what are the shifting schedules for Tech Support. i live kinda far from Makati, i was wondering it it was possible to get a more humane schedule, like starting at 9PM or something like that.

i know its a lot of questions, but its been a while since i've been here :p

Honestly, i don't believe that the accent training allowance is taxable.... kc narcve namen lahat eh P1,200 lang.... eh kung taxable un eh dapat paiba-iba un, kc *** iba may dependents, o kaya married na.... so dapat mas malaki makukuha nila kc sa akin na fresh grad.... pero pare-pareho kmeng P1,200 eh.... so nde tax un.... nde rin naman pwde VAT un kc 10% ng P1,400 is P140 dba? eh P200 nawala e... may P60 pa.... baka naman processing fee *** ng atm card or watsoever.... ewan ko lang... basta un....

LOL, they can't do that, we're not purchasing luxury items. my gues is that P100 goes to open the ATM account (since i think the pay comes in via ATM right?) and the other P100.... maybe goes to shutting up the unions in the states ;)

I hope these answers help.

West is West Corp. (www.west.corp), the biggest telemarketing call center network in the world. It's definitely bigger than Convergys.

As a telemarketing outfit, West tends to focus on handling sales operations, both inbound and outbound. (Convergys, on the other hand, specializes in customer service which is more of a pure Marketing operations). It has a long history of specializing in outbound telemarketing, although it also has excellent performance in what is called inbound direct response marketing (1-800 promotional support).

Here in the Philippines, West possibly intends to focus on direct response marketing operations, possibly for their "enhanced direct response services for customer acquisition". It's their highest-end service. That means they will be looking for agent candidates who can handle customer service with selling skills, a highly multitasking and whole-brain approach to customer service. It's definitely a challenging job. And a very rewarding one as well.

It's possible that the initial batch of applicants they will be looking for will be screened for these multi-faceted skills. They are possibly feeling the waters first by letting the headhunters conduct the screening and hiring for now. Once it has been demonstrated that headhunters can generate a sizeable quantity of qualified candidates, West will possibly take over the hiring process and reduce the involvement of the headhunters.

The danger here is the possibility that those who will apply to West in the beginning will end up being unintentionally experimented with, as it may be difficult to evaluate and assess what exactly is a "customer service rep with excellent selling skills" for West Corp. The problem is, should an applicant fail, he/she will probably not get a second chance of re-applying in West.

By the way, the culture in West Corp. (at least with their US call centers) is a family atmosphere. The company values lifetime employment in the company. Something like being employed in Wal-Mart. That could explain their emphasis in hiring only those applicants who value "growing" with their employer.

thanks cstolentino. i was wondering what was the major difference between West and Convergys. funny thing about it is that when i was interviewed for West they said nothing about sales and that it was a Tech Support job for Earthlink. nearly all my interview questions had everything to do with troubleshooting network connectivity and computer performance. if they wanted had intentions that it be partly a sales job, wouldn't they have tested me for that?

Tech Support Reps have a mix of troubleshooting services and customer services (customer services being providing any pre- and post-sales help to existing customers, and troubleshooting services means providing technical help only). The Earthlink account of West is part of the company's Broadband Solutions. Wala... ganon pa rin po. We maintained the same sched. Dapat talaga eh magiging 7:30 ng morning up to 4:30 ng afternoon yung prod training. Kaso, for some unknown reason e naretain yung old sched (7:30 ng gabi hanggang 4:30 ng umaga). OK na rin kasi nagadjust na yung katawan ko. Tulad ngayon, 2 na ako nakatulog. Atsaka sabi naman nun HR last friday eh may night differential na daw ngayon.:D

First week of training is all about American Culture, Geography, and Accent (English). You have to pass this training (80%) to continue your employment here in West. There will be an everyday diagnostic exam both written(lecture) and oral (communication skills). You need to speak in class if there's a need, but not all the time, and review your lessons for the day. Well, these things will be up to you. Just have fun while learning. Allowance for this training is 1,200 pesos.

The next part of training will be Technical Work. You will be dealing more on the real job of providing technical support to US customers who are subscribers of Earthlink. This depends on what segment you will be at - Broadband Mac or Windows Dial-up.Again, passing is 80% and there are exams in between sessions. It will take 2-3 weeks.

martinjg, i live in Filinvest QC, near Fairview, malapit sa Congress. that's why i picked that work sced, other than full night diff, (whether DST or standard time), going there and coming home is not a problem and is relatively easy.


btw, yun sleeping area, is that like a room, or couch lang or upuan lang ba? marami bang tulugan o makikipag-agawan ka pa? kasi my friend from convergys kept bragging that they have sleeping quarters for male and female and a shower room! pwede na raw tumira doon.

went to west yesterday mga 2:30pm grabe ang hintay for the exam sobra dami walk-in applicants... i was able to take the test at 5:30pm. Why did it took so long? Well they only have 10 workstations where the test will be conducted and only 7 or 8 PCs are working... tsk tsk.. well what could you expect the company has been operating for only six months or less kaya I understand.. but the facilities were very good and the work environment is very formal.. Fortunately I finished the exam ahead of time and was able to pass it.. im scheduled for interview monday next week so im keeping my fingers crossed.. he he he...

I had my interview a while ago with Sitel. I didn't make it. The consultant told me that the Filipino interviewer probably did not like my agnostic belief. We had this impromptu speaking, telling about ourselves. She said the American interviewer didn't find any problem with my communication skill. That's weird!

Whew indeed! that's a lot of stuff to learn in 2 weeks. i saw some people who were "studying" at the pantry, asking each other (and your trainer?) questions. you guys were scaring the bejeebers out of me because it looked like you guys were going through hell.

hirap ba yun BB? i used BB in the states but it was bundled with cable tv, i don't know if it works the same as what Earthlink does. if i had to troubleshoot anything all i did was check the router if it was ok, do that "ping" thing on MSDOS and if there's still no connection that's the only time i called tech support. and nearly all the time i called them its really their side that's the problem. down daw yun servers or whatever.

hey i have a question for you folks in production. can you ask your PACs or Sups if the current batch training in Tech Support won't hit production until July 1st? our last day of training would be on the 25th of June (Friday) and was supposed to be taking calls by the 28th (Monday). but then a trainer said that we wouldn't be taking calls until July 1st, and that the days of June 28-30 will be given as unpaid vacation time (which is kinda unfair for some of us with bills to pay, since it means we won't be getting a full 2 week pay because we'll be missing 3 days which isn't even our choice)

initial interview is about ur resume.... basta ganun.. wats ur weaknessess or strengths? then anong masasabi ng fellow office mates sayo (give 3 adj) then anong pwedeng masabi ng boss sayo (another 3 adjs) ganun...

ang mahirap kasi as TSR is how u get the sources of answers.. ang daming tools na pwede mong gamitin pero sa dami ng tools, di mo alam kung ano ang uunahin.. and syempre how will u fair in getting the calls.....

CLaiRe_ChiLL, if you think you're techie enough to understand how to resolve connection problems, then go ahead and apply. its up to you though to convince the interviewers that you can hack it as a TSR (and of course if you'll pass their score cutoff for TSR)

about the initial interview, its like what TT BOY said, but i did recieve some tech questions, kasi nga siguro i don't have a tech degree. but depende siguro who conducts the initial interview.

Matagal pa yung pangarap na Ops Manager. Mataas na qualifications. Ang plano ko applyan is yung opening sa technical services pero sobrang mas mataas naman ang qualification. Kaya ko yung first three qualifications nila, pero yung last two eh sablay nako dun.

Btw, ano ba mas mataas na sahod? OpsMan o yung sa Technical services? Para kasing mas mahirap yung work nung nasa TechServices eh...

DarthScully, yep... Even in sykes... Agents receive more than the IT peeps...

OPS Manager salary... I think it is more than 30k. 25k is too small for their jobs as OPS. Other call center offers 30k for the TLs... So i think OPS is receiving more than that.

kreuger.. yep.. sad to say we have dress code here... but I believe sooner or later that policy will be changed... most of the call centers started with dress code policy... i dont think you need to be wearing formal clothes for answering calls but for now, we need to follow.

we're wondering why West has different ambience compare to other call centers.. like sykes, convergys, etc where the floor is so lively, you wouldnt fall asleep..

but like what you've said... u'll get used to it... we did...

ei congrats! eniwei, night diff is 20%. for the accent training (1 week only) u will get P1,400 (less tax, so P1,200 na lang)... then while on the production training, ul get the regular pay.... just like lloyd50 said. :)

as martinjg said, night diff is 20%, as for the training allowance... well, by the time my batch rolled around, we were told that we are not to recieve any training allowance.....




..... but instead we get paid our regular rate starting first day of training (accent training)


so yeah our batch was kinda lucky :D

i'm not sure if this proved true for all the other batches that followed us, i'm only assuming that this is now West's regular policy, so hopefully when you start your trainig you'll be salaried :)

That was also the promise of the HR peepz during our accent training but after a week they told us that they need to secure first the approval of higher auths....i believe they are talking about people in Omaha... so we just received the 1,400 allowance for our accent training then.. good for you that you received a regular pay...

what i couldn't wait to happen is for West to open a branch in the ortigas area. travelling all the way to makati is getting very tiring for me.

when i ask for breaks (like 530am [for first breal] and 11:15am [2nd break]) in chat while im on calls they just tell me to go to podium.. that means after the last call ure taking.. ill just go to podium after the calls

well i actually have to ask them again after my last call. usually what happens on my shift (9p-6a) is that we que so much that when we ask "can i take my break after this call" they respond "query me back after the call", so that's what i end up doing.

i know its redundant, but i believe its got everything to do with service level. its crappy if they deffer you breaks, they did that for my lunch once and i ended up not taking lunch at all. (which is particularly bad that day since i had a headache then as well)

Not quite true my friend. Fact is the morning shift has the most calls in the whole shift based from experience and from 1 of the head supervisors. I remember then nung kaming batch pa lang, we have 55 customers waiting on the queue,some pips only took 15 min break for the whole shift. Syempre kami pasaway, kinulit namin yung MAK_break hanggang bumigay at pinayagan kami sa lunch break. hehehehe. Wala na din naman magagawa kahit defer yung break.. di na din bababa yung dami ng queue.

Sino ba yung naka-abot sa inyo na halos 100 yung waiting sa queue? I think the issue was authentication or something..... pamatay yun... hehehe.

my shift is from 1pm-10pm. normally, petix na kami around 2:30 pm but now, we have been receiving a lot of calls and our average idle time is 30 seconds unlike before, it took us hours to get another call. :(

actually we'll still have jobs even without TA, there are enough connection problems, corrupted files and user-related errors that naturally occurs in a PC that we can fix. if you notice, half the problems of TA we dont even fix, we pass it off to another team, or when their systems have been screwed beyond repair, we pass them off to OEM :p TA makes our, and our customers life a living hell.

the only TS reps who has it worse than us are those from AOL (because really, when you use AOL, that damn software will rewrite everything in your OS to the point that you'll never get rid of it unless you reinstall your entire OS to the way it was before you installed AOL. trust me i used it in the states and i hated it)

yer ryt about the freakin' AOL software DarthScully...used to have a lot of issues w/ that software when i used to work for Dell....AOL was always passing the problem to the computer co. even if its their software who is the problem
