How's it like there?

What happened after they changed their name from James Martin+Co? It's not as well known as before.

I worked there when I started my career, opened a lot of doors for me. But that was when the company was growing.

When it was a smaller company, work environment is very good. lots of talented people (work-related or not). It changed when the company expanded.

As with any company with a competitive environment, there's a lot of office politics.

I have a couple of friends working there, most of them are assigned in Singapore. Its true madaming office politics, I guess it goes with any big companies. Sa IT ngayon, your options are so limited na unlike 4-5 years ago unless you have enough experience and specilaization na.

Buhayin ko alang tong thread na to ;)

I had an interview with Headstrong yesterday morning for a consultant position. Wala na masyadong feedback akong nakuha about the company from here in PEx or from other sources. Now that Headstrong is a much bigger firm, hindi na ba okay mag-work dun? Anong klaseng office politics ang meron dun? Hope someone can provide feedback 'cause I'm curious :)

Consulting companies are supposed to be the least political because of their flat organizational structure and small team assignments.

I don't know about least political. But in Consulting companies with project assignments, employees would try to position themselves for good projects. Sometimes people get too competitive and that's where politics begin.

Headstrong was the case of "being bigger does not necessarily mean better". They were growing too fast 5-6 years ago but when the world economy took a downturn, it affected Headstrong a lot. Most consulting companies in the Philippines rely on projects from other countries.

I haven't heard from them lately. I know that they merged with another company last year. Maybe they are better now.

With office politics, kahit saan meron. Don't be turned off by that. I really can't compare if it's better or worst because my company now is a lot different from Headstrong.

Coming from my friend who works there, May mga levels dito something like Associate -> Senior Associate -> Consultant -> Senior Consultant -> Managing Consultant - Senior Managing Consultant etc. Hanggang 13th month pero may project bonus ata? yan di ako sure, may benefits like medical, dental. When she started work there, she signed a 1 yr contract, 50000 ang bond.

... medical and dental(dependents are covered),
wedding bonus, baby bonus, meron daw OT pay. I think the compensation package varies depending on the position. Parang okay naman yung office culture, first name basis yung tawagan. Another thing is meron silang dress code, long sleeves or barong mon-thurs. I might consider working there after a few months.

actually 2-3 yrs ago mas malaki ang headstrong, then some projects went wrong, nagpullout yung client and they retrenched... not sure about the numbers but i heard 200 or more...

so right now i know they are trying to build their reputation back... ang alam ko mas mataas sila magpasahod sa accenture pero yun nga hanggang 13th month lang... yung question lang is OT, i guess it depends on the project you will be getting into...

Hello,

I worked with Headstrong for 4 years. Ok naman sa company na ito, the people are all very kind and magagaling. But I have already resigned because i found a better job at Singapore. If I compare Headstrong with other companies in the Phil, ok na sya, ganda kasi ng benefits. Pero if you compare it with companies abroad (like SG) syempre talong-talo sa salary, kaya umalis pa rin ako.

Anyway, as for the benefits, may Medicard ka plus your immediate family. If you're single, yung parents mo plus your siblings below 21 yrs old, covered ng Medicard. Then may optical benefits na P5K for 3 years. Then may rice subsidy / vacation allowance, which ever you prefer. Then may winter clothing allowance na P15K for 3 years if ever ma-assign abroad ka sa isang country na may winter season, pero dapat naassign ka during winter seasons. hehe. Then they give all their employees L1 visas, para madali kang ma-assign abroad.

They try to give bonuses every year. Then they also have salary adjustments every year. Sometimes, they also ask you to stay in a hotel kung kailangan mong ma-on call.

Malaki din ang per diem nila, if you're assigned abroad for a max of 3 months. For example, ma-assign ka sa US for not more than 3 mons, 63usd per day ang per diem mo. Malaki di ba? :)

They also offer a lot of trainings, kaya hndi magkakaproblema sa career growth mo.

As for salary naman, hindi naman 4 digits lang ang sweldo.

Headstrong has been so good to me, kaya medyo malungkot ako nung umalis. They even told me na pwedeng-pwede akong bumalik if ever ayaw ko na daw dito sa Sing :) Maliit lang kasi tlaga ang sweldo if you compare it to what you will receive working abroad eh, kaya eto nakipagsapalaran ako sa SG.

Hope this helped you guys :)

And also, I'd like to add my experience working with AC. Naging client kasi ng Headstrong ang AC in one of their projects. Ibang klase ang culture sa AC.

Sa AC kasi, they get their clients because they tell them that they can finish a project for 6 months that their competitors will finish in 3 years. Tapos dahil sobrang agressive ang estimates nila, natural hindi mare-reach ang deadline so mag-slip sila ng another 6 months for example. Then pwede nilang sabihin pa rin sa clients na, we did it in 1 year, compared to 3 years from our competitors, so lalabas na ok pa rin sila di ba? Pero naman, within that 1 year, patay-patay naman ang mga employees nila.

When I was assigned to our AC proj, everyday halos OT ako. AC required us to work 10 hours a day. Ang tindi ng estimates nila, ibang klase. Their culture is more on deadlines rather than quality.

Nagrereklamo kami sa HS about the work in AC. Eh wala naman maitulong ang HS dahil wala naman silang say sa sched ng proj, what they can only give us is a small allowance for each hour that we worked overtime, na ok na rin naman for me. At least, kahit walang OT pay policy ang office, they still gave us an allowance, clearly showing that they still take care of us and appreciate our hard efforts. :)

By the way, wala na din daw OT pay sa AC ngayon eh.

with regards to hindi marunong mag-estimate, don't jump the gun. di lang naman lagi sa boss yun, madalas, meron pa pressure from above. kaya it's not as simple as it looks. when you get to that level, ull know what im getting at...

wynema agree ako dyan sa sinasabi mo. I used to work with AC din, at least a month ago. True, you get to have a lot of OTs, but you can't often blame the manager kasi minsan the clients themselves push for project deliverables, especially when it's revenue impacting. So no choice ka but to deliver it. Meron din namang nangyayari na kelangan mong mag-OT due to certain outages, i.e. down ang environments, etc. Pero not all the time naman na kelangang mag-ot sa ACN. My last manager was in fact not encouraging her team to go on OT unless it's absolutely needed.

On the other side of the coin, meron din namang mga managers or TLs na bobo mag-estimate and in fact, they don't even know what they are doing or they don't know a thing about programming. Mahirap kasi pag ang manager mo eh hindi IT at ang project na hinahandle niya eh IT. All they see is what's on their level and when it comes down to the nitty-gritty (the details), eh bulag sila. More often than not, it's their subordinates who make them look good, and not of their own merit. I've had my fair share of those kinds of people, and minsan talaga I wanted to throttle them!

Also, totoo na for the past few years mababa ang increases, and for the longest time wala nang OT pay. I think 5 years ago pa atang wala eh, someone correct if Im wrong though. Pero the last increase I got was substantially higher than the last year, so pwede na rin. But it could have been better. Slowly naman the packages have improved, pero I still resigned from the company to pursue a career here in Singapore. Been here for less than a month pa lang, and so far I'm loving it (parang commercial yun ah hehehe). The pay is very good, although medyo malungkot kasi wala akong loved ones dito hehehe.

Nagapply pala ako sa HS a couple of months ago. Naghahanap sila ng consultants for CMM stuff. I had one interview sa kanila and it went well naman. Tumawag sila ulet nung paalis na ako for Singapore. Thanks for the interview na lang hehehe ;)

Reading the posts in this thread makes headstrong a good choice.. Can someone give me details on training and minimum requirements to get in?..

I checked their website but couldn't find any programming jobs in the phils..

they're only looking for C++ and VB programmers and prefer JAVA.. :( maybe their site isn't updated.

I've never worked as a programmer before.. so all of this scares me.. Do they give extensive training?..

Headstrong was formerly called James Martin. They hired hundreds of people in 1999 kasi maraming projects. In 2001, when the US economy was bad, they retrenched hundreds of them too, in batches of 50. Some of my friends were retrenched then.

I'm in IT for the last couple of years, i'm looking for a new company, pero i won't consider Headstrong kasi nga walang job security.

up ko lang ang thread na ito, how is it working with Headstrong? please post your comments?

yeah ;) HS is a very good company compared to my previous employers. ive been in HS since May 06 and deployed in their client.

As much as possible, HS does not require their employee to render OTs.
Despite of too much pressured in the work, we find time (all of us) for leisures such as a Badminton Competition, Dinners, and etc. :D

They treat people not just an 'employee'. They send out trainings schedules for your career growth too.

Compensation ay dependi sa previous salary mo or shall we say 'magkano ka ba?'
Benefits are two thumbs up. Bonuses ay hmmmmm... mag post nlng ako ulit in the middle of december or next yr January.
D pa ako nkatanggap ng bonus/es. bago pa me.

i'll have my final interview at their client' on monday..after that if the result is OK..they'll give me an offer..lets just see if the offer is good enough..my asking salary is more than 40K (.NET with 3+ years exp)..the HR said if i'm willing to have a starting salary lower than expected, but after the probation period (6 monthys) which depends on performance..they'll give the expected salary...i said its ok..mukhang OK sa HS..the last manager i talked too said its very very very tough to get into HS..you have to get through series on interviews and you must be very proficient in English because all of them are very good in communication..so that you can be easily be assigned to any projects overseas if needed..check their website.. http://www.headstrong.com they have many openings at manila office..

I agree, it looks pretty hard to get into Headstrong. I applied for an ABAP Consultant position (not entry-level), and in my initial walk-in interview I got slapped right away with a 10 question written exam. It wasn't easy, the difficulty was on the level of an official certification exam, or close to it.

Fortunately, I must have passed because I was called back for a technical interview. This time, my ABAP programming experience was put to the test. I was first asked to rate myself on a scale of 1 to 4 in each ABAP skill. Then I was asked a series of questions based on my ratings. At the end, given a real world scenario, I was tasked to come up with a programming solution. I must confess, I walked out of their office a little shaky, but I did the best I could.

All in all, it was a pretty comprehensive technical interview, and I advise others not to take their Headstrong applications lightly. Be prepared... pretend it's final exam week :).

what are the chances na ma-accept ka ng client? most likely po what kind of interviews do they conduct? super technical po ba? how many interviews po kaya?

kasi i have this offer na at HS, been interviewed by a pm and a senior guy. kaya ko in-accept kasi gusto ko ma-experience to travel abroad, so gusto ko yung pine-present nilang project for me. kaya lang, interbyuhin pa pala ako ng client, so hindi pa pala final na dun ako sa project na yun. hmm... pointers naman po sana pexers, would really appreciate it.

depende yun, kung magkakaroon ng ng projects, tapos kakalaingan na ng mga resources, then you will be counted as a team member, minsan nga lang pedeng 'shadow' ka muna or 'non-billable' then 'billable' naman ang tag kung counted ka na as a member then billable to the client...

although as a bench, hndi mo talga masasabi na after a few weeks or months magkakaroon na agad ng proj., marami ka naman pedeng gawin, may mga CBTs naman, which you can grab for the mean time, ksi hndi mo na magagawang mag-take ng CBTs pag nasa project ka na :) or minsan may mga classroom training na ino-offer

'Yung exam para sa E-Learning Developer of course may logic, math at flowcharting. Standard naman 'yang mga 'yan for an IT/technical position.

Di ga'no nakaka-intimidate.

I-follow up mo. Sa akin kasi isang araw lahat nangyari -- exam, 3 interviews then 'yung signing of contract. 'Yung iba kong kasama, feeling ko tanggap din since nakapasa naman sila sa 2nd interview, pinauwi nga lang kasi gabi na halos. Sinuwerte lang ako since ako 'yung unang in-interview (so ako din unang natapos).

Ikaw what position?

@my_identity

helpdesk support position. actually *** na akong exam siguro dahil meron na akong experience sa position na yun. tuesday morning phone interview it lasted siguro mga 20-30mins, personal questions lang. then afternoon din nun technical interview ko na dun mismo sa office ng support team, head ng support team *** nag interview sa kin. then after ng interview ini-schedule me for final interview with the manager kinabukasan. after nun sabi wait lang daw ako ng call nila kasi i-rere-evaluate pa daw nila. pero *** mga interview ko ok naman ang kinalabasan, sobrang ok ang mga supervisor, mababait sila. sa support team ako hindi sa developer side.

Nag-exam din ako ng VB dyan last year.
