SEGMENT producers of ABS-CBN programs receive only 3,000 pesos to 4,000 pesos for their work in the station's shows.

An insider said this budget has not increased from five years ago.




"We are overworked and underpaid," the insider said. "Talk shows have the same budget since five years ago. Segment producers shoot day in and day out (for this amount). No budget revisions or studies have been made (by the network)."

This is why the production people of ABS-CBN have been discussing among themselves the possibility of moving to other networks, like ABC 5, which is said to be giving production staffers more realistic rates.

Some production people of ABS-CBN stay with the network only because of the prestige of working for the biggest broadcasting company in the country.

According to the insider, "contracted talents sign one-sided contracts with terms mostly in favor of the network."

Comedy and drama writers are also contemplating on moving to rival networks in search for a more humane treatment and bigger career opportunities.

They claimed that ABS-CBN has a take-it-or-leave-it attitude that is the opposite of its brand image of a warm and caring "kapamilya" that it has been projecting through its advertising.

ABS-CBN should stop and take a quick reality check before a mass exodus of its production staff ensues.

mataas ang sweldo ng mga artista sa abs pero binabawi nila sa mga empleado nila. mas malaki pa nga ang sweldo sa kalaban kumpara sa kanila. yung iba namang gustong magresign at lumipat sa kabila, hindi assured na may opening dun sa kabila. marami silang pending applications sa dalawang kalabang stasyon.

- worldwide service na rin mala-TFC na hanggang ngayon naka-pending pa rin

Ngayon kung mga mukhang pera naman ang mga empleyado ng ABS-CBN, matagal na silang umalis.

O di ba, minsan nang pinirata ng kabila ang ilang empleyado ng creative team ng ABS dahil sa paggawa ng mga orihinal na station id?

I have a friend who once worked for GMA 7 (this was waaay before the Kapamilya vs. Kapuso war), and she said mas maganda daw talaga di hamak ang training and exposure sa ABS CBN. That's why people still choose to work there despite the low salary. And I think, at that time, GMA offered an even lower pay. Ewan ko lang ngayon.

BTW, the news item posted here is part of Dolly Anne Carvajal's column. Isn't she an ABS CBN insider?

:shakehead: The article was done by Dolly Ann for Inquirer which is an affiliate of GMA. Of all the writers around naman, siya pa who works for GMA's sister company who wrote it. If this is true, then, why do those ABS employees continue to stay with the network if they feel that way against their company? And these employees are thinking of transferring to ABC 5? How many times in the past ba that the PLDT employees has staged a "welga" under Tony Boy Cojuangco's leadership due to low salary, among others. Looks like may malicious intent yata. Hmm. . .

A cousin-in-law of mine (currently working for an ABS-CBN sister company) used to work for ABS-CBN in Mother Ignacia and I remember his wife telling me before that though di nga gaano kataas yung salary, nababawi naman sa overtime pay. Actually, sawa daw sa overtime. Plus the perks and benefits pa that the company gives.

Yung mga artista, natural, mas mataas sweldo ng mga yun because they are the frontliners. But I don't think naman that ABS is giving those employees behind the camera an unfair and inhumane treatment.

Actually ang sahod sa ABS ay depende sa position na hinahawakan ng empleyado at kung saan siya nakaassign. And being "overworked and underpaid" depends on your superior. As far as I know (i don't claim to be an expert in labor codes etc but to quote a friend inside the company...) since it is a media company the producers focus on the deliverables "its all about the ratings, darling," to quote a top honcho. Mapa executive producer ka man or Production Assistant ka your ultimate goal at the end of the day is to air your show. So if you're overworked it totally depends on the management of your boss. May mga boss na magaling sa planning so their subordinates are able to manage their own time deliver excellent results and not complain about the salary. One can even handle two shows and earn more. But kung walang foresight ang EP mo, fickle minded, poor in planning and walang diskarte sa buhay definitely you'll feel that you're overworked and underpaid.

Makikita rin ng viewers kung ano yung working conditions and attitudes ng mga tao behind the show. Halatang halata yung technical discrepancies, minadaling editing and loopholes sa scripting.

Sabi nila mas maganda ang working conditions sa GMA compared to ABSCBN. I hear from the grapevine that sa dos its a dog eat dog world whereas sa GMA mas humane ang treatment doon. Kahit saang media company siguro ganun. Coz in tv production you hardly get enough sleep (lalo na if you got an EP like the latter I mentioned above), minsan wala pang day off. At ang tao kapag walang tulog nag mo-morph, kaya siguro nagiging asal aso sila.

Perhaps despite the difficult working conditions in ABS people stay because of the money, pag marami shows mo mas malaki ang kita. As for the benefits I'm not really sure. Swerte na siguro kung regular ka. May nagbanggit na yung iba walang malilipatan... that's partly true. others siguro tinitiis na lang ang condition sa loob kasi aside from walang malilipatan kinagisnan na nila ang trabaho at yun lang siguro ang alam nilang gawin.

Thus being "overworked and underpaid" is relative. It may exist in GMA, ABC5, NBN etc. Siguro to the media networks quit the network wars and concentrate on reeducating the masses not just in ratings and revenue. Ang tao naman kung ano isusubo mo yun na yun ang kakainin. try improving the working conditions kung meron mang hindi kanais-nais because it is the media that molds the youth, which comprises a large percentage of viewing audiences.

Yun lang pow.

Another thing is, I don't think ABS-CBN supporters are being blind sa mga kamalian ng network. We are aware of those imperfections. It's not being blind. Siyempre as a supporter, you have to look past all those imperfections. And this applies not just to ABS-CBN supporters but to GMA fans as well. If we defend ABS from issues like this one. Di ba, you GMA fans, does the same thing when a negative issue comes up against GMA? Ganun lang naman yun. ABS is not perfect. So does GMA. Remember nothing in this world is perfect.

And I think it is natural lang naman that if you work in a media company, overworked ka talaga. It is a 24-hour job. zoelette is right. Being "overworked and underpaid" can happen to the best of companies. If this is a problem by some ABS employees, then they should air these grievances to the management and not to someone like Dolly Ann who works for a rival company.

But the bottom line is : If it was GMA 7 involved in this issue, Dolly Ann Carvajal would not have done the article at all.

AN ABS-CBN insider told me that my item about the disgruntled staff of the network had caused quite a stir. I might have rocked the boat, but I hope it does not sink. So the network's bigwigs better come to their senses.

My source said that the P3,000-P4,000 salary that the segment producers are paid for every episode they work on is not commensurate to their workload.


Day in and day out, they shoot, coordinate, take care of logistics and edit. Tax is deducted from their talent fee so their net pay boils down to about P3,600 per show, which has been the rate since 1997. That's approximately equivalent to the pay a call center employee receives.

The irony is they don't get outside employment to help finish the backlog so the poor segment producers are obliged to absorb more work even with their low salaries.

It's the same thing for writers, according to my source. They don't hire new people so the daily grind is pretty difficult. If you enter any production room, you will see the people working there are dazed like zombies because they are so overworked and have no choice but to handle all the workload.

Proof of the general malaise prevailing among the ABS-CBN staff is the poor attendance during the "Wagi" party that the network threw at the QC sports club recently.

As one segment producer put it, "What's the point of attending the party? We don't feel like we're really kapamilya (part of the family) anyway. It's all for show!"

Being a TV host myself, I know how taxing the job of segment producers and writers are. They are the unsung heroes of every show. If ABS-CBN can afford to pay their stars hundreds of thousands of pesos (millions even) they should also give due compensation to their production staff.

After all, even if you got an award-winning actor, there would be no show if not for the combined efforts of the staff.
