Just an inquiry addressed to those Cebuanos and/or promdis who are working in Manila...

1. Do you feel the Big D*? *Discrimination
2. How do you deal with the discrimination?
3. How do they discriminate you?

I've heard that Manilans have superiority complex over Promdis most especially if you're a Cebuano or if you have come from Cebu.

Be frank and honest, but maintaining the discussion civil and professional.

I am promdi & Bisayan. I have studied in an institution in Cebu. So what's the big deal? Let them think what ever they wants. I don't give a damn. But so far I have never experienced this. When people ask me where I am from I told them and they would make a comment that my tagalog is not obvious as a probinsiyana.

Pero if in case I encounter this discrimination thing. Well it depends wag lang ipapakita. And better prove na mas may ipinagmamalaki iyong isang tao.

I don't think there is a difference whether you are from Manila or province, some people are stupid some are not. Yan ang hirap sa ating mga Pilipino, we discriminate against each other. Instead of trying to help improve our individuality.

But seriously, wala akong paki alam bayaan ko na lang. I think natoto na ako dito na wlang pakialaman instead just laugh at it. Kung iyan ang feel ng iba let it be.

But people who tend to do this, they want to think they are superior when they are not other words they are the people who are insecure & want to think of themselves as superior.

How ever there is one thing I find very funny, my husband whenever we meet these "so-called superior people" I notice that they always defer to him & more often addressed him as Sir. Through him I have meet professors, president of major corporation, ambassadors, & what filipinos call Hollywood celebrities and none of them act with the pompousity(which we call arrogance) of a minor bureaucrat from Manila.

Presently, i have a co-worker who used to work there (Manila) for 1 year or so. He said that his Manilan officemates would attempt to look down on him, but he would just respond back by speaking in english, then the Manileņos would silenced in "shame" or I personally think they were just caught off guard and cant respond quickly in english.

Most of the educated Bisayans I have met speak and write English well. I think it's because there's no Taglish where they come from. What a refreshing change.

Wala pa naman...Although I'm based here in Cebu, I've worked with Manila based people and I don't think I felt being discriminated (whenever I'm in our head office). I actually talked to a fellow bisaya based in our head office about this issue and according to her she had not experienced this. However, I felt being discriminated and "abused" by the taxi drivers in Manila. Especially at the airport!!! If they would find out that I'm from the Visayas, they would make an impromtu guided tour around Pasay , Makati and sometimes Mandaluyong before dropping you in your intended destination! NOW THAT DISCRIMINATION! he he he

There are exchange employees from cebu in our office. Frankly, nakakatawa lang silang magtagalog but its all good. Nasa pagdadala lang yun. Masasanay din sila, practice lang. |",|

Not all... In fact, I actually DEVELOPED a superiority complex over Manilenos while working with them here in Manila. I'm a Cebuano, and it really is true that generally we speak and write better english.

My previous officemate was from Dumaguete and she was really, really good! She was even better than my boss. Heheh. She has an accent when she speaks in Tagalog, but we really don't mind. But when she speaks English, it definitely blows our socks off!

don't you think its the other way around.

manila people are disadvantaged. they cannot understand and speak bisaya.

bisaya can speak and of course understand tagalog.

ok lang pagtaga cebu...

ang problema pagtaga Mindanao, umiwas sa gulo at kahirapan pagdating pa ** minamaliit pa... i dnt know minsan bakit ang iba dinidscriminate ako.. buti nga lang diko pinapansin. minsan nga pinagtatawanan ko sila eh.

tulad nung unang work ko sa manila, nagwork ako nun as technician sa isang malaking computer shop, minamaliit parati ang skills ko, hindi lang nila alam mas high pa ang experience and degree ko, most of them kasi techncal lang natapos ako d nila alam 4 years course comp scie natapos ko, bumagsak lang ako pagka technician kasi underconfident pako nung 1st tym ko sa manila... d tumagal ako na ang naguutos sa mga ungas na un :D

way back in college, that's how we get back at people who sort of discriminated us dormers. we talk in our native dialect when they are around. they seemed to think that we're conniving or talking against them. although in reality, we never did. yung pinag uusapan pala namin --iba.

hay.... tapos na yun. balikdad nga sa dorm. the cebuanos dominated the population so the common dialect was cebuano. kahit yung mga ilonggo napapabisaya na rin. yung from luzon were the minority. im not from cebu though but i can speak bisaya. my native dialect is different.

cebuanos cannot totally understand our dialect (surigaonon) although they may understand some but not all because we sound like boholano yet we can perfectly understand and speak cebuano.

Hehehe mark-mark I understand Surigaonon lola & mga kamag-anak ko surigaonon kasi.Besides nong high school ako yong dialect ng town na pinapasukan ko ay more of a surigaonon kaysa bisaya. I speak bisaya though.

Since most people in this thread are from Cebu, may I ask your help because I'll be assigned to work in Cebu City for a year and I need a good place to stay - fully furnished, accessible by public transpo, near central area, 2 br (preferably). Budget is 10000-15000.

Where I work, there are lots of people from the provinces, so place of origin doesn't really matter. It actually becomes an interesting conversation piece. I know a lot of people who come from Bicol, Iloilo, Cebu, Iligan, Davao, Ilocos, and Pampanga. I'm from Zamboanga City, but it has never really mattered to me "where" people come from.

1. Nope, never have, never bothered to know.
2. Not Applicable.
3. Not Applicable.

I've heard that Manilans have superiority complex over Promdis most especially if you're a Cebuano or if you have come from Cebu.

I think this is generalizing, since I know quite a lot of people born/raised in Manila and have never been treated any differently. I've been around in several work places as well. But then I guess I could be one of the "lucky ones?" :D

How about Manileņos working in the provinces? Is there any discrimination against them? Just curious. :)

no there is no discrimination about manilenos workin in provinces not unless they were acting like piece of sh*t in our city. usually people in provinces are friendly so things run pretty smooth for them.

I don't see what the big deal is all about!!! I am 100% Cebuano, born and raised in Cebu till I started working here in Manila two years ago and I have never experienced being discriminated against, because of my provincial roots. Heck, I'm damn proud to be Cebuano and I speak bisaya whenever I can, much to the annoyance of my tagalog officemates. Sorry na lang ang dili kasabot kay dali ra malibak hahahahhaha!!!!

Whenever I go back to Cebu though I find it very surprising how the "Imperial Manila" mentality is still very prevalent. I guess it really is on a case to case basis. Kung kabalo ka modala sa imong kaugalingon there is no reason people look down on you and definitely walking around with a chip on your shoulder because your're Cebuano doesn't help at all.

Grow up.......

It's interesting to note where this "false sense" of insecurity stems from. I think this mentality only prevails because of word-of-mouth -- that people still think it exists.

Most likely, I notice that this is prevalent in people who don't speak Tagalog well, and revert to being defensive when some people find their manner of speech amusing, or just plain disarming.

Precisely the reason why an international organization hired me over other candidates from Manila. Or so I was told. A day after the phone interview, the hiring committee ( 2 Americans, 1 Australian, 3 Filipinos) asked me to fly to Manila for a face-to-face panel interview. Though kinda wet behind the ears at 23, I heeded the first call to conquer the world. :) It was my first adventure outside the Visayas. Best of all, I didn't spend a single centavo throughout that first class trip. ;)

English ng English lang ako even with pinoy colleagues. After at least a month of working, naging walang hiya na rin ako sa aking balikong Tagalog. :D Galing ko na rin siempre sa Taglish- to my family's consternation.

I worked in a call center that handles telemarketing for American companies and I tell you the sharpest sales professionals under me are from the Visayas. Galing sa English and with matching accent pa! I guess that bodes well to the the education and training they have in the English language.

On top of that, my Visayan staff are quite nice and there is something about that Southern accent that I find so cute :-)
