My mom got confined in the hospital recently because of anemia. She's had this since she was young but it wasn't that bad until she got back from a month-long "vacation" in the U.S. When she came back, she really looked so haggard and pale. We thought it was just fatigue from taking care of our ailing grandma so she rested for a week before going back to work. After one week, she still felt weak and developed flu so she decided to get herself confined at Asian Hospital. Blood test results showed that she had low hemoglobin count.
She stayed in the hospital for 3 days. It has been about two weeks now since she was discharged but she still looks pale and gets easily tired. Her cough has not subsided, although the doctor did not find anything remarkable in her x-ray. She's taking medicines for anemia and cough. By the way, her doctors also found myoma in her uterus, but according to my mom she has always have them since she gave birth to my youngest sister 19 years ago. I think they're benign otherwise the doctors would have advised her to remove them immediately. But still, I am worried.
I just feel sad that ever since she came back from the U.S. she has not gone back to her normal strength. Can travelling trigger anemia? What are the causes of anemia? Also, my mom is menopausal, can that be a factor too? What can she do to regain her strength?

There are several causes of anemia, most of which can be determined using blood tests. Did the doctors say what sort of anemia your mom is suffering from?

I'm taking Iberet Folic Acid andd Recormon injections. I agree you should investigate this further because certain medicines cause medicine-induced anemia. My friend who's anemic had to have a blood transfusion but she's ok now. Hope your mom gets better :)

Hi eyedoc, I asked my mom but she only said that her anemia was due to fatigue and stress. I dont know what sort of anemia is that.
To car728, thanks!

Anemia is NOT caused by fatigue & stress, rather the other way around. You'd be more fatigued if you have anemia because you don't have enough rbc's to bring much needed oxygen around your body.
Anyway, what I meant was...if your mom is iron deficient, does she have abnormal bleeding, any other illnesses etc. Usually, the doctor should know what type of anemia it is after a series of blood tests has been done.

I've had anemia for years - I take FGF which is an Iron/Folate supplement everyday however have had the occasional transfusion when things have got really bad. Generally the only thing I've found about being anemic is that I get lethargic very easily and bruise a lot.

By the way, my doctors also told me I should always get enough sleep, because it's when you sleep that your body is able to produce the Red Blood Cells. Pwede naman daw ako magpuyat, pero minsan minsan lang. Maybe your mom does not get enough sleep, kaya mas lalo naaaggravate yung condition niya. But she should have blood tests and stuff done nga so that the doctors will be able to properly diagnose her condition and set her on the road to recovery faster :) Hope she's getting better by now *okay*

It's usually one tablet a day. But it's always better to ask your doctor, of course. :)

dark stools and diarrhea are some of the common side effects of iberet FA. To lessen this effect, always take iberet FA with food. (Yung tipong last bite and nguya mo eh isabay mo na ang paglunok ng iberet). If this side effects proves to be too bothersome, consult your doctor about it.
if this works, you may not need motilium (diarrrhea) and plasil (nausea) anymore.
p.s. hope you are referring to your stool as the "bowel". kasi kong bowel (intestines) talaga yung nangitim, kailangan mo na ng immediate surgery. :rotflmao:
