I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you will notice form an earlier thread, thin is not bad at all. If you are talking about building muscle - that kind of weight - then the usual advice is to work out and increase your intake of protein.

ross

i eat a lot of protein. sometimes i think that i'll have a heart attack from too much protein. i just want not to be thin. (maybe nothing is bad with being thin but it gets really hard to intimidate people. hahaha)

How old are you? And what is your weight and height?

ummm... doc, im 18. i think im 5'7" and i think i weigh 115 lbs.

You are a little underweight (your ideal body weight would be around 120-145 lbs.), but think positive: most people are thinnest at their teenage years. So most probably you'll get heavier as you grow older. Like B.U. said, eat lots of proteins, like red meat and dairy; carbohydrate and hi-calorie food supplements like Ensure or Sustagen may help, too. Try to eat a balanced diet, though, and avoid fatty foods.

with all that protein though.. shouldn't you convert them to muscle mass as well???

Ira

Anybody care to explain biochemistry? BU? Grumpy? Garci? Anybody...? I'll think of a way to explain it, Jonny, if the three don't answer. It's in my biochem notes somewhere.

jonny: just because you scarf down protein means it all goes into your muscles. your body will just break down the excess protein into little chunks of 2-carbon molecules and ammonia. the latter is what makes carnivores stink. said 2-carbon molecules get oxidized for energy (the Krebs cycle), used for building other proteins (not necessarily muscle), or ack, get converted into either glycogen or fat. so if you want the protein to end up as muscle, you have to exercise. again, no such thing as a free lunch.

one of the current fads is the atkins diet: mondo protein and fat. a lot of physicians and dieticians are skeptical about it, primarily because it's difficult to stay on (no carbs, period), forces your body into ketosis (really, pretty much starvation mode), and potentially overloads your kidneys with protein breakdown products, and your bloodstream with fat (most of it saturated). i said it before, i'll say it again, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Hi, I have the same predicament coz even though I eat a lot and I eat frequently I don't gain weight and mass. I don't get big. I'm 5'7" and weigh 130 lbs. I'm a Nursing student and I sleep at an average of 4-5 hours a day only. I take B-complex and some other multivitamins. What should I do???

clawed_out
Dec 24, 1999, 01:48 AM
ako rin pareho ni arcangel...
5'6" 110lbs, pano ako tataba? i'm taking multi vitamins naman (centrum) , also i eat alot of meat, ,as lagi ang white. veggies oorin, meron pa bang ibang vitamins na pampataba? pangpalaki ng muscles? thanks

Calories in >; Calories out = Weight Gain. With exercise, the weight gained is more muscle than fat and without exercise, it will be mostly fat. It's really this simple. None of those vitamins etc. are bound to help unless you eat more or do less or both :)

Besides, the important thing is health and being underweight may not be bad at all.

ParuParo
Dec 24, 1999, 11:35 AM
How about increasing your CHO intake? Kasi di ba the Atkin's diet is effective in losing weight (drastic reduction of carb intake) so how about doing the opposite?
On second thought, don't mind me na lang. :>; I really don't know what I'm talking about...ako'y isang mumunting nursing student lang kasi...

And don't call yourself lowly nursing student. Masyado ka naman nag-se-self pity. Doctors can't work without us

Archangel,
I'm studying at Hunter College (NYC). Saan mo narinig that doctors can't work without nursing students? Without nurses, puwede pa. But without nursing students?
Also, about my being paself-pity... actually, calling myself a "lowly nursing student" was supposed to be a disclaimer...lest the members of PEX think I'm giving Dr. Ira a run for her money...(you go, Dr. Ira!).
Hayaan mo, next time I'll try to be politically correct. Just for you.
*tapiks ross sa balikat* have you tried the not-so atkin's-diet already?

ross... don't worry gaining weight comes with age... i had the same problem before... back then when i was 18 up to around 25 i weighted 125 - 130lbs at 5ft 10in ... i noticed that as one ages he tends to have a bigger appetite... now at 26 i weigh 170++lbs and getting heavier :)

Hmmmmmmm..... all I can say is that all individuals are totally different. Every individual have diferent body metabolism. It might work on some or not all. You have to think of the bone structure of every individual, too. Just exercise and eat the right food. Gain or not gain weight as long as you are healthy.. that's all that counts.
Doctors and nurses work together. Each depends on each other. :)

Well I have the same prob and my school doctor recommended me to take PROPAN with Iron. I took it and in two weeks I gained five pounds. It really can make you super hungry and kinda makes you a little drowsy.
As for people in US there's a powdered milk they sell there that can make you add more weight but I forgot what you call it, basta made by GMC, just try to check it.

Propan with Iron (Buclizine HCl with Iron) is an appetite stimulant; I only give this to patients who have no appetite, but if you eat a lot in the first place but you don't gain weight, this capsule won't help.

Reinne
Jan 3, 2000, 12:18 AM
Ira: I have appetite naman ah, :) is there something wrong with me kaya the doc gave me propan or something? Pero I gained talaga 5 pounds hanggang dun nga lang, di na ulit ako tumaba pero I still take it. Masama ba if i continue it?... kasi baka ma-overdose ako eh. :)

With all due respect to the sayangtists... este scientists, ito ang aking abang kuro-kuro.

Yung ibang kilala ko, the doctor works over the nurse..or is it the nurse works under the doctor...o baka the nurse is nursing the doctor, or the doctor is doctoring the nurse...Haaay naku, nakakalito.

Ira
Jan 3, 2000, 10:20 AM
Reinne, he/she probably wanted your appetite to increase further, kaya ka niya binigyan. There's no harm in taking Propan with Iron if you feel you still need to, so, um, bon apetit? :)

cute
Jan 3, 2000, 02:46 PM
Actually I have the same problem. I just wanna ask to doc. if the powdered milk that I saw at some malls is really effective. Is it safe to drink?

Reinne
Jan 3, 2000, 10:12 PM
Thanks Doc Ira! :)
How about Appetens (correct spelling ba? or appetence?) Ok ba yun if I take it? Will it help me gain some more weight or is it just appetite stimulant too?

clone
Jan 3, 2000, 10:48 PM
Any of the doctors on board care to comment on the genetic or hormonal effect on weight gain/loss?

Also, Doc Batang's post on "calories in >; calories out = weight gain" carries a lot of weight. I also like the part that says "the important thing is health" kaya nga tinanong ko yung genetics at hormonal influence.

Ira
Jan 4, 2000, 02:07 AM
cute: What do you mean, powdered milk? Like ensure or Sustagen, you mean? If so, they are high-calorie drinks, so if you want to gain weight, then that's okay. But if you have to fork out a lot of moolah for special "concoctions" for this (meaning, much, much more than the regular milk we have in the supermarket), I'd suggest just sticking with the regular milk. :)

Reinne: Appetens (Pizotifen) is more or less similar to Propan. No harm in taking it, but I think one appetite stimulant would be more than enough...sayang lang pera mo. It's just like taking a double dose of Propan.

clone: No genetic effects naman, although hormone-wise, if you starve yourself half to death (by this I mean anorexia), there are some hormone problems na that go with it--for example, pag female ka, your menstruation stops. If you're obese, some problems that you have to watch out for are diabetes, hypertension and arthritis. You see more endocrine problems rather than hormone problems with obesity; hormonal problems are occassional causes, rather than effects, of weight gain or loss.

I hope this explains the things you're asking, guys. Just post if you want some stuff to be clarified. :)

Ira:

Thank you for the extra information but I need more clarification specifically on the thyroid hormone. What is your opinion?

Ira
Jan 4, 2000, 10:30 AM
Hyperthyroidism can cause weight loss, but hand in hand with that disease, you will also experience a multitude of symptoms, like heat intolerance, tremors, nervousness, what they call Graves' exophthalmos (a type of stare you'll associate with hyperthyroidism once you've seen it) fatigue, weakness, menstrual irregularity, increased heart rate, etc. etc.
While increased thyroid hormones may cause weight loss, I think that you will notice the other symptoms first, and would have seen a doctor already, before you'll even worry about the lack of weight gain. It's way down the list of reasons why a person does not add pounds.

how do i compute for my ideal body weight?

Ira
Sep 8, 2001, 09:01 PM
Ideal Body Weight (men) = 50 + 2.3 ( Height (in.) - 60 )
Ideal Body Weight (women) = 45.5 + 2.3 ( Height (in.) - 60 )

The results are in kgs.

The only way to gain weight is to take in more calories than you burn, i.e., eat more. some people have a healthy appetite but you don't gain weight, especially if thinness runs in your family. You'll gain a little weight when you grow older and your metabolism slows down, but if your genes dictates that you're thin, then you really can't change that.

work out everyday and eat a meal every three hours.

also, you should buy those weight gain milkshakes and drink one of those every three hours too. it will cost major $$$ but it will all be worth it in the end.

motivation is critical.

I'm about 5'8 1/2 and I weigh a little under 120 lbs. Guess i'm underweight too. I've never had a great appetite all my life. But i'm healthy mind you. I rarely get sick. Parang wala lang talaga akong gana kumain. Whatever spare calories i take in gets consumed playing sports. I made an effort before to gain weight but it went absolutely nowhere. Siguro nga motivation is critical. :)

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GAIN WEIGHT BY INCREASING MUSCLE MASS AND NOT BODY FAT THEN GO TO THE BODYBUILDING THREAD IN HOBBIES AND RECREATION.

I'm 5'8 1/2 inches tall, weighs 160 lbs. I used to be 140 lbs. but when i started bodybuilding. i loss a significant amt. fat and gained lots of strength and muscle mass. this is the only healthy way of gaining weight. other benefits are strength gains and decreased possibility of injury.

Ira
May 6, 2002, 05:47 AM
I don't know you, and I don't know what happened to you over the summer to make you eat so much that you gained 30 lbs. Were you bored? Did your girlfriend or your barkada cause you to develop a new habit of eating a lot? If you have other symptoms pointing to a possible endocrine problem like easy fatigability, heat/cold intolerance, adult-onset acne, bull hump, etc., then see an endocrinologist. Otherwise, you yourself said it: Eat less and exercise. There is no other effective way to lose weight and keep it off.

i do get tired real fast... and i have acne all over my face and body... and what's bull hump?

Ira
May 7, 2002, 02:36 AM
The acne is just significant if it appeared recently with the significant weight gain. Bull hump is similar to truncal obesity--your upper back and shoulders seem to have a significant amount of fat compared to your limbs, much like that of a bull--then see an endocrinologist. Otherwise, diet.

i just want to comment about MOSEGOR. when i was younger (mga between elementary & high school), i took this vitamins 'coz i'm so thin & i wanted to gain weight. the appetite stimulant effect wasn't so obvious on me 'coz i'm really matakaw even before i took it. what happened to me is... i craved for so much sleep! buti na lang i took it during summer vacation 'coz i remember, i would sleep 12hrs na at night & i still feel sleepy the whole day! this is no exaggeration but i (literally) fall asleep even while in the middle of cleaning the house or while eating. but i was starting to gain weight, so as my cousin who was taking it too. yun nga lang, tulog to the max! eh ayoko naman ng ganun, sayang vacation ko, no happenings! so from then on, i swore i won't take it again!

I'm 17, male, and I'm underweight... skinny... I eat more than most people... drink vitamins, sit in front of the computer all day. Why ain't I gaining weight.

My eating habits are normal.... I usually skip breakfast, but eat a cornflakes in milk at the nearby convenience store near my school during breaks, about 9am... and I eat lunch and dinner. I drink the vitamins after dinner.

Any suggestions on how can I gain weight? I know people know more about slimming than fattening.... Cyberdocs... HELP!

Who should one consult if someone is not gaining weight even if the person is eating a lot? (I've read it's about the pituitary something?)

there are people who really have trouble gaining weight. It's especially difficult if you feel like your eating a lot already and nothing is happening. I suggest, you consult a dietician/nutritionist to help you with your weight problem. They can give you a weight-gain program which will not put your health at risk. Taking vitamins/supplements may be harmful at the end especially that it gives the liver and kidneys additional workload. :)

Thanks.

If you are below 18, you can consult a pediatrician. If 18 and above, you can consult a general physician, a family physician, or an internist (Internal Medicine).

A lot of factors can affect the body size. One aspect is yun age niyo.
for example, mga age 13 to 20. malalakas kumain yun iba, pero dahil sa mabibilis din sila tumangkad at lumaki (not necessarily tumaba), hindi sila lumalapad. Teenage years are growing years so mga payat sa ganun age, wala tayong magagawa, ganyan tlaga :)

For most people tumataba once they reach age 24 or 25 and above. This is a personal observation. though, one can assume, they stopped growing on both ends and start growing in the middle...aka flabs, 2nd chin, love handles, 3rd and 4th horizontal type cleavage.

It just so happens na parati nagddiet mga kasama mo, so pansin mo double ang kinakain mo sa kanila.

Activity, if you are always busy at work, lakad ng lakad, dami ginagawa, all the extra activity burns calories, so wala rin nangyayari. Hindi rin naiipon ang taba.

Unfortunately doctors cannot do much with patients wanting to gain weight. mas problema namin mga ayaw pumayat, dahil sa dami ng sakit dulot ng sobrang katabaan.

One vitamin seems to work for some, try mo na lang Propan with iron.
Multivitamins lang pero increases appetite a bit more. It works for some people and they do gain weight after a while. Over the counter lang naman so its safe.

happy eating :)

any multivitamin with appetite stimulant is fine. However don't expect too much, apparently it doesn't work for some people. I had experience prescribing the above mentioned brand and it does apparently work. But if you know other brands, they might just work as well.

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to gain weight - I eat a lot of rice, if not three times a day. I eat a range of vegetables and meat everyday, basically I do eat, in fact I eat quite a lot. But the problem is, it doesn't seem like I'm gaining much weight.

I'm thinking about eating those protein/cabohydrate bars. As I've heard they help you gain weight. But I do have the following concerns.

Do they have any side-effects?

How many should I eat a day/week ?

How much do you gain?

What bars should I eat?

Hope you guys can help thank you in advance. *okay*

please read my previous post regarding some aspects of weight gain.
I have nothing against chocoprotein bars... the amount you need to consume depends on the amount of carbo/protein it contains. Best thing to do would be to check the labels.

Most people who couldn't gain weight because they don't put any effort to it. If you want to gain weight then uminom ka ng Sustagen 3 times a day if you can afford it. Make sure you take one before you go to bed.

actually nasa habit na yan...

fat people habit - eat eat eat.. as if their life is all about eating.
thin people habit - eat... (after many hours).. eat... (skip eating).. minsan madami.. minsan onti..

Try mo sumama sa mga matatabang tao... pag bumili sila ng pagkain.. bili ka rin.. sabay kayo kumain.. parehas ng dami.. ewan ko lang kung di *** maging magkamukha in a short time :)

kanya-kanya lang tayo prob. yong iba prob.naman kung paano pumayat. just see d positive aspect of being payat like tipid sa damit. like me for instance, instead sa ladies sa teen section ako. pag sa States, sa petite section. di ba habang lumalaki ang size d more it gets expensive?
yong pang 9 na pasahero ginagawang 10, bec.of my size nagkakasya
ako lalo na pagnagmamadali ako.
in addition, tipid din sa food lalo nasa panahon ngayon. kaya mataba yong iba dahil malakas kumain & vice-versa although there are exceptions.
I have tried Propan w/ iron rec.by my doc.pero wa epek din. I dont have prob.naman talaga w/ appetite kaya lang lack sleep. One
good nite & God bless!

There are people who are naturally thin, as there are those who are naturally fat.

If you are naturally thin and you want to gain weight, first make sure that you don't have any medical condition that's causing you to lose weight. Then make sure that you're eating enough. Then start working out.

Hello everyone, I'm 23, male trying to gain weight. At 5'6" and with that age kasi I only weigh 118lbs-120lbs. So baka may alam kayong tips na nababagay sa mga vital statistics ko para maka gain ng weight. Then, does anyone of you know a program on how to use the gym? Meron kasing gym sa amin, free lang kaso walang instructor so hindi ko alam kung paano mag start ng exercises for a thin guy like me. So kung meron kayong alam, please do reply. Add ko pa pala, pwede ba akong mag gym kahit may scoliosis ako? Actually mild scoliosis lang kasi hindi masyadong halata. thanks

Hi. Look at these two programs for beginners and choose which one is more appealing to you.

Program 1 (http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?objectid=C1F018A6-DE7F-45D8-A9EAFF3EBF5EA0C6&slide=1&isagg=0)
Program 2 (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=998224)

For a detailed information on how to gain weight, check out this article: How To Gain Weight (http://www.healthypinoy.com/health/articles/diet/how-to-gain-weight.html)

About your scoliosis: do not start with too heavy weights, keep your posture proper at all times (bend your knees and keep your back straight when getting weights from the rack or floor), and observe proper form when doing the exercises.

Cheers! :)

I'm drinking L-Men Gain Mass; costs around P430.00 in SM Supermarket (pero good for about 2 weeks lang ata). Parang lasang Sustagen. At effective. Nakakatulong yun sa workout ko.

I just don't know which one costs more--Appeton or L-Men.

Im 23 y/o pero im super duper underweight i think... 105 pounds lang ako and since bata pa ako payat na ako! And wala naman akong sakit or anything abnormal with me kasi dati ko pa pinapacheckup toh and im really normal said my doctor. and im an active person, also an athlete and malakas kumain. Wala naman payat samin and ako lang talaga. Desperado na ako lumaki! Hahaha! Dati nagtetake ako ng mega mass and whey protein pero i don't seem to gain weight... di ko alam kung anong supplement and magandang bilin para yun na lagi kong iinumin. Any additional advice that you can give me?

has anyone even tried centrum and appetite plus? effective yang 2 medicine na yan. una kong na try ay yung centrum. pero hindi pwede sabay kung centrum, centrum lang. ngayon, appetite plus na iniinom ko recommended by my physician. maganda yung appetite plus kasi multivitamins na din. try niyo. ask niyo muna doctor niyo kung ano opinion nila about appetite plus. :) good luck sa inyo.
