Be ready for a long exam with essay writing. The exam comes before the series of interviews. Good luck.

Thanks santincaroleone, May tumawag kasi sakin last wed from safeway and she told me that if I am the "lucky" candidate willing daw ba ako mag start agad. I really don't know what she meant by "lucky" or ganito lang talaga sa safeway. I said yes and then she told me that they will call me again if ako yung napili. Then kanina may tumawag sakin to tell me that I have an "interview" tomorrow then after 1 hour he texted me na cancel na daw yung interview tom kasi may meeting daw yung mag "iinterview" sakin irreschedule na lang daw ulit ako.

You applied for a programmer trainee position, right? I guess she was impressed by your credentials to consider you as a "lucky" candidate. Safeway's apprenticeship hiring I must say is a tough selection process. I suggest na kulitin mo sila na mag-eexam ka para makita nila na you're really interested.

Good day folks.

I got clarification with the Talent Acquisition Group. Their new email is

Manila.Tag@safeway.com

So they'll update the website soon. In the mean time, you should send your resumes there, use the online form. Last resort na siguro to send them to me.

I've forwarded three CV's already.

New clarification, about the non-poaching rule... Safeway Philtech has current agreements with the following.

Accenture
USTR
Lawson
IBM
Headstrong
HP
Vendors (serving our requirements –there are lots of them)

So please realize that you may have applied in past and this rule may have caused your CV's non processing.

Thanks,

PeopleSoft v8.8 or v9.0 we're still looking... he he.
Mainframe (Cobol, JCL) - di siguro mawawalan ng need.

Training is so worth it. 2 months worth of extensive training tapos kung ano yung sweldo mo sa contract, yun na yung makukuha mo kahit under training ka pa. You may refer to http://www.safewayphiltech.com/. Inimprove yung content ng site. Enjoy!

New clarification, about the non-poaching rule... Safeway Philtech has current agreements with the following.

Accenture
USTR
Lawson
IBM
Headstrong
HP
Vendors (serving our requirements –there are lots of them)

So please realize that you may have applied in past and this rule may have caused your CV's non processing.

what do you mean by non-poaching po??

@deejay12

I would probably do it....kaso night shift ako he he. It shouldn't be that hard, looking over your resume. Just bring your game face...kasi may non-technical part din yung job interview with my managers.

@blushingcheeq and mickoolitz,

Please use Manila.Tag@safeway.com or the online hiring page @ the homepage. Last resort na lang ang email ko...bravoexo@hotmail.com

Responses to your applications will depend on needs of the SDG teams. I can only speak for ours, PeopleSoft v8/9

The next apprentice batch will graduate Oct, I think. So only after that can you expect a new round of applicants getting in through the apprentice program. Although I could be wrong... he he Anyway, COBOL, DB2, JCL, CICS, VSAM, TSO and usual skillset na kadalasan hinahanap... specialization like PeopleSoft, Lawson, or Java, J2EE, Perl, Unix scripting or SysAdmin etc... are on a per need basis... so I'm sure if there's a need current or pending applicants will get calls.

I'm pretty sure it's the same thing. It is suppose to discourage the very thing you're describing.

@letter_A,

Bring your game face. Be Confident. and Be Interested, there's nothing worse than an applicant that doesn't show enthusiasm to the job/company he or she is trying out for.

It's there to maintain the relationship between cooperating companies at a level of non-competitiveness.

By default, most of Safeway's work here in Manila is Application support work. Though we are now venturing into development, programmer trainees are trained to join application support groups. It would depend on which team you would be assigned after your training but most probably, you would be in support for awhile. There are enhancement work naman while in support but it can't be guaranteed that all trainees will get a chance to participate in development projects from scratch.

Basta sa una essay type, parang more on personality exam so galingan mo na lang pag-english mo, IQ, comprehension, abstract reasoning, aptitude, math, and logic....

But anyway, yeah, most companies' exams are still time-pressured to probably test how you handle company stresses and pressure... meron lang talagang mga companies na mas forgiving kesa iba... hehehe...

What does it really mean to do "support" and "maintenance" work in Safeway? That's what we're going to do if we qualify as apprentices right? Now, what does it REALLY mean?

Apprentices are "programmer trainees" right? So, how much / what kind of programming do you do in "application support" and "maintenance"?

Support basically means you handle incidents and problems experienced by Safeway users. Incidents are classified as events that disrupt service while problems are basically classified as recurring incidents that need solutions.

In other words, kung magkaroon ng problema *** application, it's your job to make it work. If may naidentify na issue na lagi na lang nangyayari, you would need to help identify that problem and develop a solution to it.

How much programming? Hmmmmm.. Usually problems require coding to some degree, from mundane to complex. Incidents on the other hand require little coding or even none at all. Support of incidents usually require you to coordinate activities with different IT groups to find a work-around to it. This is however depends on which SDG group you would be assigned to.

Hope I helped you with your questions.

Call centers provide 1st level or 1st tier support. In the case of IT related support, this is handled by TSRs. Support in safeway, handles 2nd to 3rd level support. These usually are problems and incidents that are beyond the capabilities of 1st level support, involving complex fixes, and in some cases, programming changes. Expect heavy work sched shifting and lots of customer support calls when you get into safeway support. Headsets are standard issue.

so, it means that people involved in support work in safeway manila wear headsets so that they can talk to customers?

if yes, how often do support peeps (average calls per day) answer customer calls? just curious.
my question is based on doober's post.

Hahaha! It's not required. You could use the phone alone if you want to. :) Just kidding. We only use the headset to make our lives easier. It's kinda tiring keeping the phone around your neck when you're in a conference call for hours.

How many average calls do you make? Well, the only reason why support people from Safeway call the customers is to gather more information about the incident or problem the customer's have. Requirements and information gathering is important to help resolve the issue. But if you need numbers, I guess in my team, we make about an average of 10 calls a day. On an average too, I say there would be about 5 conference calls a week also.

The group where they'll belong to depends on their performance on the training and their over-all qualification, or at least that's what they told us nung pipiliin na kami kung saang group kami mapupunta.

Good luck sa mga applicants and to the next batch of apprentices. Wow... feeling ko ang tanda ko na >_<

Yup, lots of support peeps wear headsets. The frequency of calls usually depends on the team your with, some get a lot per person per shift, while some get none at all. I'm refering to problem and incident ticket calls. I've also recently heard that support managers may sometimes monitor problem resolution calls, probably to QA customer service, etc.

Dapat kapalan mo mukha mo...you have to follow up...So you can act accordingly. That is, continue with your application with the company or apply with other companies.

In my case, I could have been working for a better paying company but I didn't follow up with them after my final interview with the department director turned out not so good. They needed someone more technical for the post of software testing :) so I chose the company that made me an offer...Turns out better paying company changed the job description after all to fit my qualifications...but too late...I had signed the employment contract with my present company.

siguro nga kapag na hire na nila ako, wala na ako magagawa.... parang it's time for me to pack my belongings and live in a place near mc kinley. yun nga lang, IF I AM GOING TO BE HIRED, THAT IS. :hmm:

time to get there: 3 hours. lakbay probinsya :rotflmao:.

back to the topic:

madali lang yung exam! awa ng diyos natawagan ako agad 2 days after the exam. it is so strange kasi i am expecting a more difficult exam. o baka swerte lang talaga ako dahil naaawa lang sa akin si lord talaga :eek:. interview na ako bukas. sana makapasa ako sa mga interview para dere-derecho na ako. :hmm:

about the exams: all portions are time pressured. you will be given time as long as 25 minutes (as far as i remember) and as short as 3 minutes. hint: meron pong mga tanong sa english na "dalawa" ang tamang sagot. quickly choose among the two of them and do not think twice. pampalito lang yung situation na yun if you encounter them.

pareng istarbuko...parang ayos k pa dyan ah hahaha jk

well to those planning to join safeway, think about it properly, the bond, the location, the shifting (IMPT!) and what growth or potential opportunity the company has to offer, coz in the end, its not about the company, it's about you

the company aint that bad, without it, i wont be where i wanted to be in the first place. the working environment aint that bad either, well it depends on which team you go to. the training errr that's another thing (they train you just to bond you).

the shifting part, at first it wont matter that much but it will take its toll on you....unless you like shifting lol.

so at the end of the day it's a good company around 60/40 (good/bad)

hey water! yan lang pala gngwa mo sa bago mong work ah.. nagpepex hahahaha (kilala mo ako, the avatar's a giveaway :D)

note to new applicants, tama ang sinabi ni water. medyo addicted ang safeway sa pagbobond ng mga tao. Training? bond for 1 year. US? another year. Canada? same thing.

sa tingin ko lang para na silang nagiging desperate sa kanilang pagreretain ng employees nila na instead of improving the work environment and all that stuff that would benefit the employees, they drive them away by forcing bonds on them, which is not right.

para sakn nga un shifting e secondary disadvantage na un e... ang main downside **** is the way they try to bond you.. at isa pa, pag matatapos na ang initial bond mo e saka ka nila ooferan ng US or Canada trip para maretain ka uli nila for another year... talk about sneaky hehehe

pero not all are bad. un mga tao e masaya nmn kasama and most of them are friendly so you've got that going for you... (probably the only thing too)

yep support ako. at first e puro calls lang ang gagawin mo kasi un mga veterans ang naghahandle ng mga programming stuff. pero pag pinakita mo nmn na you can bring it, then eventually, albeit gradually, e bibigyan ka nila ng mga programming problems. Despite that though, you will still have to take calls, especially if mag-isa ka lang sa shift.

I'll help you out with this one. We get contractors from Radix. If they do well, we absorb them. So in case you are able to get in to Safeway, might as well go here.

If you do a backread, a lot of pexers have already described how our exams are. Di siya mahirap! Flow-charting lang. You just have to do well with the interview!

It really depends sa performance mo. Of course may advantage na yung mga prohire in terms of tenure and experience so if you start out as an apprentice, you really have to work your way to the top, but from the current Service Delivery Group (Dev and Support) setup, the growth is there with more and more projects, testing, etc. coming in. Ibang usapan na yung kung after two years being an apprentice na nakikita mo na parang walang plano manager mo sayo.

In short, if you're level 1 and you want to be promoted to level 2, act like you're in level 2.

I agree with PurplePretzel. Apprentice lang siya before but she's a teamlead now. (naks!) Actually, there are alot of teamleads in Safeway who were apprentices before. Just show them your potential and be assertive.

Ang galing naman ni miss purplepretzel :D So those working in safeway, would you recommend joining the Apprenticeship program to sharpen my developing skills? Or more on people skills talaga? Gusto ko talaga masharepen yung developing skills ko to beef up my resume.

@istarbuko99

sabi mo one month na lang? out of curiousity, would you stay with the company? hehe.

@santinocorleone

thanks... how about the range of salary ng mga managers any idea how much.... lets say entry level ng manager?

Actually I don't have an idea kasi wala pa ako sa level na yun. Hehe. Definitely above industry standards. I'm really wondering how much my manager earns. Hmmm.

If you go to www.safewaymanila.com and nakita mo yung picture ng mestiso na guy na may white laptop. Hindi model yun. senior manager namin un. hehehe! most of the people in the website are managers or employees of Safeway. :)

@Tigress
Oh i'll be staying pa. Baka I'll get to meet you pa in case you join the Apprenticeship program. :)

Kasi naman purplepretzel...may talent ka para maging team lead. Kami kelangan pa namin i-develop yun 'leadership skills' namin, kasi we were not born with that kind of a talent hahaha.

But for our group, from the last batch of apprentices that we got (7), 4 of them after the training, were immediately tasked to do dev work, 1 was permanently moved to the dev group (Java), the other 3, are development in mainframe and web-based projects.

I guess our managers do not believe too much on having someone take the same path that the others took before them. Yun mentality na 'pinagdaanan ko iyan kaya daanan din ninyo'. One of our managers told our group that if things could be sped up for the apprentices, then good, what we want is to have a team that could progress quickly and not be stuck on doing the same things over and over again.

Some of our team leads were actually tasked to do TL work even before their regularization at Safeway. Some were even being pushed already as leads before their 1st year.

We have subject matter experts that were also once apprentices. Now they are SMEs not only in Manila but SMEs of the entire Safeway organization. They are identified by Safeway as the 'experts'.

These guys know what they want, they openly express their desire to their leads and their manager, and have continuously and constantly shown that they deserve it.

Di naman dapat hindi na i-develop yun mga hanggang ngayon eh di pa nila alam kung ano ang talagang gusto nila, or those na naghihintay lang ng opportunities, instead of creating them.

Pero take note, positions and opportunities ARE LIMITED. Di lahat makakakuha nun...those that know what they want and have made efforts to achieve those, are at a clear advantage talaga...

Discover what you really want when it comes to your career. Marami diyan ang hanggang ngayon eh di pa nila alam talaga ang gusto nila. Don't let others such as your leads or manager decide the path for you, but be open to them, even if your plans is to leave Safeway. They should enlighten you on what the company could and could not provide. The manager is there to support and develop you. If what you want is not in Safeway, your manager should still go on and continue your develoment.

Ok nga itong manager ko. Early this year, nagresign isa naming member at papuntang Singapore, and yet isinama pa niya sa mga apprentices to freshen up his Unix Command and Scripting skills. Though paalis na, my manager went on developing him. Hanggang ngayon I am sure my manager is still in contact with those that have left, and is still providing them sound advice.

Is your interview next week a panel interview for programmer trainees?

Ang laki ng pantry ng safeway. Nashock ako nung pumasok ako dun papunta sa isang conf room for my individual interview. :lol:

@sureone

I was inspired by your long post. Actually, I really want to do some dev work. The one who interviewed me last week said that there is a chance for an apprentice to become a dev in the future. As of now, if ever I will be considered to be part of the Apprenticeship program, I may actually accept it. Hopefully after the training, more on dev ako mapunta. :D

Hi tigress7...there's a greater chance that you'd be doing support work, and also a chance that if you decide to join, you'd be in support for over 2 years, or during the duration of your bond. As for the bond, I don't know why it's such a big deal since it is not being forced on you, besides, you get to agree and sign it first before they impose it on you.

And don't worry, like in our group, kahit bonded pa yun apprentices, Singapore companies are willing to employ them and pay for their bond...kahit yun mga kajo-join lang sa amin na apprentices (April 08). Talk about our group's reputation. Well...kasi naman mga magagaling din rin naman yun mga napunta sa Sinagpore. For us who have stayed, masaya rin kami, kasi it's our choice, and it would depend naman kung saan mo gusto i-invest yun career mo. Siyempre if Safeway feels that you're investing your career on them and ginagalingan mo talga...may kapalit iyan hehe. Kahit kung paalis ka na...may pipilit pa rin sa iyong di umalis :naughty:

At the end of the day, these choices are yours...be mature enough to stand firm on the decisions that you make.
