It's a good drug, but very much abused. Mercury price is around P40++ a pill (if you're lucky enough to find stocks), while black market price could go as high up as P65 a pill. I called up Roche, the local distributor, because one of our patients needed Orlistat, but unfortunately, high-ranking government officials have already reserved the Roche stocks to give to their friends, so those who should have access to it are on the losing end. You should get a doctor's go-signal before starting yourself on this. Abuse of this pill can cause a lot of side effects.

Okay...this pill(?) is supposed to make you lose weight by taking it after every meal. In effect, you're going to be like running to the bathroom every so often to take a crap. Sometimes pa daw, you'll see the oil in your pants because it leaks.

I read the literature on Xenical and it's supposed to prevent the absorption of fat in your body that's why you'll keep on running to the bathroom to defecate and it also causes steatorrhea (fats in the feces). But do we really need it? We must remember that proteins and carbohydrates also supply calories and any excess cause a gain in weight. And Xenical is supposed to be used by patients for therapeutic purposes. As what i have said, Xenical's action is to prevent the absorption fats by the body, in the first place you don't need an excess of fat intake in your diet.

Prolonged consumption of high-carbohydrate or fat-free diets causes an increase in acetyl CoA carboxylase synthesis, which will act as a positive stimulus for increased conversion of proteins to fatty acid, so your lipid levels will rise higher than when you just took in the right amount of fat in your diet in the first place. That's why Xenical only prevents absorption of a certain percentage of fat in your diet, NOT all fat. And, of course, vitamins A, D, E and K need dietary fat to be absorbed by your GIT.

ok here's the story, i have a paper due on Jan 20 regarding the anti-obesity pill Xenical (orlistat is its generic name)...so far all i've found are places where i can buy xenical. that's not what i need. i need the science behind the drug. so if u have time pls pls pls post some links that'll help me with my paper. (note : i'm not cramming! it's just that i've been looking for a month now and i haven't found anything that's worth including in my paper.)

i've already looked in www.xenical.com (http://www.xenical.com) (unfortunately i can't copy paste it coz this is a major paper and my teachers are pretty strict with plagiarism i.e. it can get me expelled.

Your questions about orlistat prompted me to look it up and what I have in my hands is a comprehensive review article on anything you ever wanted to know about orlistat. As Ira said, spoon feeding would be wrong but I'll help a bit :)

Orlistat is a hydrogenated derivative of lipostatin which is a natural product of the bacteria streptomyces toxytricini. The way it works is it is a potent inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic lipases. You see, dietary fat (triacylglycerols) must be hydrolysed by these enzymes (lipases) to free fatty acid monomers and monoacylgycerols in order to be absorped into the body. The net result of taking the drug is that fat absorption is reduced by 30%.

Other things:

Dose: 120mg 3 times daily with meals.

What has it been shown to do? It has been able to effect:

1. 8 to 10% weight reduction over a year in obese non-diabetic patients who took the drug together with a low calorie diet.

2. A more modest 6% weight reduction in obese diabetics.

3. Also shown to be better than placebo when combined with normocaloric diets.

4. Improves lipid profile in non-diabetics reducing levels of total cholesterol and LDL.

5. Better blood sugar control in diabetics resulting in lower doses of antidiabetic drugs.

Relatively well tolerated with the main adverse effects related to fat malabsorption: oily stool, diarrhea, and lots of flatus.

If I were in Manila and If I wanted to spoonfeed you I would fax you the whole 20 page review article but the stuff above should be more than enough to get you started.

It seems that most of the info you are looking for is contained in the www.xenical.com (http://www.xenical.com) site. Enter under the Health Care Provider selection in the main page and then click on the selection "Complete Product Information" on the left hand side.

The primary resource for the questions you ask - synthesis and detailed mechanism of action are primarily available from Roche which is the company that makes the drug and so I think it is acceptable to cite the info in the web site which is probably the same stuff cited in the package insert and in the Physician's Desk Reference for Drugs. The other place you can find it is in any recent major pharmacology textbook or Drug Compendium. One thought is to go to the Roche office in Manila and I'm sure they have al the references for you there.

my mom used to take xenical pero itinigil na niya. i don't think u need a prescription to get this eh. pwede ng bilhin sa mercury drug ng over-the-counter. i'm not sure kung P40 per capsule pero yung 1 box (30 capsules), around or almost P900 ata.

i lost the pounds you gained using xenical. i only ask for it from my mom. i don't regularly use it, though, i just take it when i know i'm going to eat a lot / eat really oily food (like pepperoni pizza - my gawd!). and like what everybody here said, it's gonna be messy. i made the mistake of taking it before i spent the night on my blockmate's house to finish up on a project - let's just say it wasn't a pretty sight - and it was the longest overnight of my life, bar none.

xenical is a relatively safe drug. yung messy bowel movement is more of an effect than a side effect. it prevents the absorption of fats from your diet. i usually use it whenever i'm expecting a heavy meal like parties, birthdays etc. i don't advice it to be use to lose weight. exercise and nutritional counselling is better.

i think masmaganda kung mag-exercise ka na lang and take supplements instead. mas-safe yun. kasi kung walang exercise yun pagpapayat mo, hindi safe yun.

It will basically inhibit your intake of fat, and therefore reduce your total calorie intake. If you don't eat a lot of oily/fatty foods, I don't think it will help much.

At your height and weight, you may actually be slightly underweight. Better to lose the little extra fat you may have by working out. It will be a more permanent solution than Xenical. You'll also avoid the dreaded leakybutt syndrome.

My advice is to eat sensibly and workout/exercise instead of taking Xenical. About Xenical itself, you need a doctor's prescription to be able to purchase it. My brother and sister were on it for a time 2 years ago on doctor's orders of course. As woofers said, the leakybutt syndrome would be a consequence especially at those times when you had consumed ultra-oily foods.

Think about it. Xenical inhibits fat absorption - just that really. If one is really determined to lose fat (not necessarily weight), but he/she can't do his/her cardio and exercise religiously, watch his/her food intake consistently, be patient and all, then that person has issues. For most, losing fat isn't easy, so expect the consequences.

What is Reductil? Same din ba siya ng Xenical? Same price din ba? Anyone tried Ballerina. I tried it for a week. It will make you feel full even if you have not eaten yet. Sobrang mawawalan ka ng gana kumain. In my case, even seeing my favorite food makes me shiver. ^_____^

Just wanna share my experience taking ballerina. I started taking it only morning 16 Dec @ 3 times a day. I felt so thirsty like Im having dried throat so for the 1st day I drank like hell and pee at the same time...I think I finished 3 1.5 liters of mineral water....I didnt feel any hunger siguro coz I was drinking a lot...

Before I always crave for food ---- its been 4 days now and so far the craving's gone...and my interest with food has gone less...I was thinking was it psychological or part of taking the pill. I eat even Im not hungry...fruits Im taking....

it says in the box u'll slim down in one week (7 days) so far I weighed myself, I lost 2 kilos already from 70kilos to 68 kilos....

^^ actually oo nga babalik *** weight mo pag tinigil mo so i don't think it's worth it :) I have 2 friends who took it. *** isa sobrang pumayat ****! from close to being obese to shapely figure! but i think she's taking it till now as a maintenance lang. (she started using it 2nd yr college pa kami and now we're 23!) Iyong isa, she lost weight after taking it for 2-3 weeks ata but gained back the weight (at medyo tumaba pa ata!) after discontinuing zenical, d nya kasi kinaya effects nun, esp the thought of having to watch what you eat everytime u take it because of the possibility to defecate nga

going to the gym or regular exercise plus right diet is the best way **** to lose weight. but i warn you din about going to the gym, once you stop it you'll gain back the weight din or mas tataba pa if mabilis pagpayat mo

i'm actually chubby and i took xenical for a month ..though inde ko sya tinatake as prescribed na 2-3x a day everyday..i only take it after i eat kinda fatty food..then i always eat high fiber foods so that my bowels will regularize..and to my content, i often poop with oil.. *okay*

well, my weight is improving..i just take it to maintain my weight.. :)

i also used to take lightsome capsules before pero i don't like it na coz nadedehydrate ako dun and i stopped pooping..puro wiwi ng wiwi na lang.. :depressed:

Share ko lang po..Few years ago i tried taking Duromin 30mg. once a day, b4 bfast. Effective naman po kasi nabawasan weight ko ng 10kg (22 lbs).

Its for obese people. U can buy it at Mercury drug pero kailangan po ng prescription from the doctor. And its not good for people who have heart problems.

Effect po niya is mawawalan ka ng ganang kumain, puro water intake. During d time na nagtake ako nun, ang kinakain ko lang po steamed veggies lang.

Nung malaki na po yung nabawas sa weight ko and may natira pang capsule sa isang pack na nabili ko, i just took it every other day.

in my case, nope..masama din ang sobra..inde maganda epekto, nafifeel ko kasi rin minsan na walang laman tiyan ko palagi..***** after ko mareach yung ideal weight ko and when i get to maintain it as well, pati sa food intake, masanay ako sa control...magquit na ako magxenical. *okay*

zinnia, if you want to firm up your tummy, back and legs..xenical cannot work like a fat burner kasi all it can do is absorb fat from the fatty foods you eat and ipoopoo mo.. so kung ano man yung stored fat mo sa katawan, you use that for energy and if you move more often, more chances of losing those unwanted fats..and if you don't eat fatty food that much, you don't need it..you need to exercise and firm things up *okay*

my lifestyle is..

5days working,mainly sitting down. less carb intake,no rice for the past 2 1/2years. i box every friday and saturday. if i dont feel lazy, i jog for 2hrs max,shoot some hoops and play badminton during weekends.

my weight? way overweight for my height..(sorry dont want to disclose numbers here,sorry.) but i know i need to shed 20-30lbs.

how much i can loose with my lifestyle?

I dont take it everyday because it is sooo magastos. I did not lose weight that much because of my fault. I eat much more when i take it. It is just me to blame. Sa Xenical it helps but you must also excercise and watch what you eat or else your bound to fail.

The reason why orlistat is contraindicated in patients with biliary tract disease is that orlistat lessens the absorption of fat in the intestines. Fat is needed in the absorption of Vitamin K which is needed to make our clotting mechanisms work. In patients with biliary tract disease, particularly those with obstruction, the clotting mechanism is deranged due the inability of the bile to reach the intestines. If there is no bile in the intestines then there would be no absorption of fat. Now, if you add the effects of orlistat and the effets of an obstructed biliary tract, it would be catastrophic.

Having your gallbladder removed does not mean you have an obstructed biliary tract. Now going back to your question regarding an absent gallbladder and the use of orlistat, the answer is: You may take it.
