in this day and age, i wonder if gender discrimmination still exists. survey lang ko if other people have experienced this.
i'm a programmer in a software company and my fellow programmers usually comment that they rarely meet female programmers. in fact, one told me that i was the second female programmer he met in his 20 years of working. i took that as a compliment nlng.
another incident was when my fellow programmers were taking a break tapos dumaan lang ko. i heard them say na ayaw daw nila may female coworker kasi mahina daw output ng babae and that's why some companies prefer men over women. kaya lang i noticed sa newspaper ads that some companies prefer female programmers nga e. *** kaya?
may kakilala din ako who's a good female programmer and mgmt only gives her the small duties kasi babae daw siya. pwede ba siya magsampa ng kaso nyan? hehehe
does this happen to IT companies lang? or meron din yan sa non-IT?

There are some companies which still persists with this thinking. Although it is relatively few. It depends more on the company culture.
So far, in the companies I have worked with, this is not really prevalent. It is true that men still outnumber women by a bit but not by far. I have worked with a lot of female programmers, Analysts and project managers and I do not see them less when it comes to development.

I've met good female programmers. In my previous job, 20% of the team I was leading was female.
But yes, discrimination still exists.
Hey simoen, you might want to read this: http://philip.greenspun.com/careers/acm-women-in-computing.html

Lampas 25? Yes definitely!
Though as people (male & female) approach mid-twenties or so in some companies, their role becomes more managerial in nature, unless they really prefer to stay "techy".
Female programmers aged 50 more or less? Haven't met one. I guess programming was an all boys club in the days gone by. And I dare say your company is stuck on that era.
Nowadays, I think due na rin to very strong demand, highly competitive companies will take you, whether girl, boy, bakla or tomboy, as long as you have the skill. Promotions, priveleges? On many companies I know, it's the same for both sexes. Except that us boys don't get maternity leaves
OT: some have something like "paternity" leaves wherein dads can stay at home a few days after being acquainted with their offspring :D

I don't think programming as a profession has been around long enough for there to be many 50-year old women programmers. I know of very few 50-plus programmers who are still programming. My college professors and my uncle come to mind, but those dinosaurs were around during the punch-card era.

In my opinion, if you're still programming (writing production code) after 4-5 years you're either very, very good and love programming for it's own sake, or you are not good enough to promote to a higher-paying position.
Following Greenspun's thinking,
maybe the women that moved out of active programming and into management (where salaries may be up to 5x those of a lowly programmer) were the smart ones? ;)

Your officemate has very little faith for the females. There are 2 out of 8 women, in the studio I'm working in, as game programmers (also falls in software development). The other 6 are either scripters, 3D and 2D artists. And they've been around for the last 3-5 years.
