University: 1999-2000
Total Average Freshmen
Tuition Fees

1. De La Salle Manila - P 35,000/ Trimester
2. Ateneo de Manila - P 32,000/ Semester
3. UST - P 16,000/ Semester
4. UP-Diliman - P 6,000/ Semester
5. UA&P - P 40,000/ Semester

The Tuition Fees of our best Philippine Universities are CHEAP compared to that of elite U.S. Private Universities which charges as much as $ 10,000.00 to $ 20,000.00 per year.

The reason why UP-DILIMAN is able to charge such a relatively low Tuition Fee compared to the much more expensive Philippine universities is because it is government subsidized. Therefore, its great advantage for attracting High School graduates is its comparative very low tuition fee compared to the Philippines' elite private universities.

The other elite Philippine private universities since they do not enjoy any government subsidy at all have no recourse but to charge to their students the ACTUAL COST of quality education that they offer.

It is interesting to note that UST only charges its students about one-half of the tuition fees charged by De La Salle, Ateneo and UA&P despite the absence of a government subsidy which UP enjoys.

Kaya pala mas maraming public at private HS graduates na nag-aapply sa UP-Diliman kaysa La Salle, Ateneo at UA & P.

Mura kasi.

yup, sobrang mura sa UP. we only pay 300/unit. and that's if ur part of the upper income bracket. i have friends who only pay 75/semester either because their rents dont earn that much or their rents work for UP (e.g. faculty). more importantly, the quality of education UP offers is of high standard

there are two ways to look at it, guys! on the positive side . . . in spite of its low tuition fees, UST still managed to be among the countries' leading learning institutions, then and now. UST is recognized by ched with the second most number of coes and cods, next only to up. thomasians pull surprises after surprises, as they top board exams and edge other schools in national and international competitions. and UST continues to produce graduates that emerge as the bests in several fields or able partners/contributors in fields dominated by graduates of up, ateneo and de la salle.

on the negative side . . . for UST to remain financially viable, the dominicans make up in quantity what they lack in quality. kaya, sangkatutak and estudyante sa uste. nawawala (or nawala na?) tuloy ang novelty nang pagiging tomasino. besides, these low tuition fees attract students from low-income families who, after graduation, are willing to start as rank-and-file employees. compare them against the rich kids who can afford to be selective, attend graduate studies, and have officer positions as entry level. the glaring disparity creates perceptions that work to UST's disadvantage.

these low tuition fees also prevent UST in providing competitive salaries to its academic personnel. hence, even the better thomasian educators leave UST for greener pastures. parang UST hospital wherein its low admission rates send the better thomasian doctors scampering to st. luke's and makati med. and lastly, these low tuition fees render the administration unable to provide the best facilities to its students. while the campus is undeniably among the country's bests, the classrooms leave so much to be desired. only a few classrooms are fully air-conditioned although lately the dominicans are working on it already.

We only pay PhP 300/unit in UP pero you wouldn't believe how hard we fight for that each time the school year begins. Other universities like UE have much lower tuition fee and they're not government subsidized. Actually right now, we're fighting against Laboratory Fee Increases. We only pay PhP 100 per unit of a laboratory class but if you are from the EEE Department, it can vary.

From what I read, this year the Philippine Government's annual subsidy to the UP System(UP-Diliman, UP-Manila, UP Los Banos, etc.) is P 1.5 BILLION.

This is compared to NOTHING AT ALL to the other Philippine private universities which just relies on its own resources which in turn is mainly sourced from the Tuition Fees these universities charges its students.

Well, I must say the reason UP-Diliman attracts the MOST number of High School applicants nationwide is their very low Tuition Fees as compared to the highest priced ELITE private universities namely De La Salle, Ateneo and U A & P(about 100,000 HS applicants mostly from the public schools in all provinces apply in UP from what I read in some threads here - battling for only 11,000 UP Freshman slots annually).

UP is definitely cheap if you can pass the UPCAT and if you are an STFAP bracket 1 your tuition is free you only pay the student fund. As far as government subsidy is concerned I think they should properly check the stfap system in UP...marami kasing nakakadaya.
uptowngirl: the gov't subsidy isn't increasing anymore. I think people in UP must consider privatization of idle lands para hindi na tataas ang tuition yo at mapapaganda ang ibang equipmant sa pamantasan. ;)Come to think of it kahit may increase pa sa tuition mas maliit pa yung binabayad mo compared sa UST, DLSU or ADMU (knowing that u are availing an education with excellent quality).

jack: it may be easy to say that privatization of idle lands is one of the best way to earn additional income for the university pero hindi ganoon ka-simple ang issue...during our college days, i've attended a couple of rallies in protest to the concept of privatization. maaari ngang hindi na tumaas ang matrikula pero ang expenses naman within the university ang tataas - think about those true blue scholars naman, i mean those people na iginagapang na lang mga magulang nila para mapag-aral!

Quality college education is very expensive thats why La Salle and Ateneo charges very high Tuition Fees.

Although UP's Tuition Fee is almost very low - its annual government subsidy of P 10 Billion a year enables it to offer the same high quality of college education as La Salle and Ateneo. Without the annual government subsidy, UP would have to charge the same very high Tuition Fees of La Salle and Ateneo.
