View Full Version : Your school's publications -- are they any good?

I love reading UP's Collegian otherwise known as Kule because basically, there's not much censorship. You can complain about your teachers about unfair treatment, etc. And you're sure to hear about every piece of news whether they may be big or just basic gossip and this helps a lot because you can't always keep track of the different thins going on because UP is such a big place. How about your school's publication/s? Do you like/dislike them? What do you like/dislike in them?

i don't have any choice but to be biased about it since i was with the varsitarian for three years...

the "v" has been consistently winning, year in and year out, the "best edited campus paper award" being given by the national press club and has produced luminaries like jullie yap daza, francisco tatad, and cirilo bautista.

the thing i like about the paper is the wide diversity of its numerous sections- from news to sports, from socio-political commentaries to religion, from literary to science and technology which gives the "v" a balanced coverage

although a "student paper", the v staffers have tried to break free from the innate mediocrity of student/amateur writing..prompting multi-awarded writer and la salle-based critic isagani cruz to declare that "the campus writers in ust are undoubtedly the finest in the country today".

my "v" stint became even more memorable when the tigers strung together championships after championships earlier in the 90's and the paper produced special issues after special issues celebrating ust's feat....practically every member of the sports staff during that era are now well entrenched in the major papers today....

i couldn't agree with you more. what makes me so proud of the v is its balanced coverage, numerous departments, clear-cut and crisp punto de vista, lay-out, art works, photos, literary pieces, health, religion and technology features and the students'vox.

i've read somewhere that the ust varsitarian publishes the best campus articles, poetry and art works, and produces the best writers and journalists in the land.

oh how i miss handling the usapang uste department.

the ust varsitarian or famously known as the v also organizes the annual pautakan, an inter-collegiate quiz contest and the ustetika literary awards, where the top filipino writers of the land converge each year.

each year, the v also publishes arts and poetry compendium, aperçu, folio and the infamously witty vuisitarian.

V-odacious.

Kule is good kaya lang wala na masyadong issues ngayon. Gone are the days that we see writers with such passion as the kule in the 70's or 80's. Now, the issues are not that "dangerous" anymore. Pero i still like to read it. ;)

of course, the varsitarian is the best kaso nga lang kailangan i-proof read ng mga staff kasi daming mali sa spelling.

Sinned,
'ala ng Vuisitarian since 1997 'coz of the '96 issue. very offensive and vulgar daw. luckily I got one copy which i still keep

another well-respected and acclaimed ust publication is the flame, the official college publication of the faculty of arts and letters.

being the hardcore art and literary publication of the royal and pontifical university, the flame features monthly movie reviews where the elite movie critics from ab rate films they watch (circa 1993-1996); the acclaimed and award-winning poems indited by ab students and some students from other colleges; excellent artwork features, reviews, critique, and opinion section; and the biting humor of the phleghm to name a few.

aside from the v, the flame also serves as the major writing ground of the best campus writers and philippine authors. former writers include: the award-winning playwright and scriptwriter jun lana, the brilliant and battle of the brains finalist roel manipon, palanca award winners ramil gulle, nerissa guevarra and geri anonas, u.p. professor and poet neil garcia, paper writers and award-winning authors lourd ernest de veyra, mike maniquiz, alexander capiz, rei alba, the dlsu-based manolito sulit, the distinct thomasian writers guild, and of course the holy mother of ust writers, poetess ophelia alcantara dimalanta.

in 1994, 7 the flame-bred writers were accepted in the prestigious and elite annual u.p summer writing workshop held in baguio - the most number of writers coming from one school ever accepted in the said workshop, thus making ust the most successful workshop qualifier.

Flameracious.

The Varsitarian - the only campus paper that produces the best and brightest journalists in town!

My boss, the very witty Jullie Yap Daza came from that eminent paper.

We have a long list of respected UST alumni who came from the V and are now acknowledged as institutions in Philippine letters.

Oh, my dear Ophelia Dimalanta, the Thomasian source of wisdom and beauty! You have made Philippine literature so great and distinct!

Sublime! Sublime! Sublime! Beauty and wisdom gush forth in Santo Tomas!

Personally I think La Salle students are more interested in reading 'The Lasallian' than Ang Pahayang Plaridel, though both are good. I also like the Malate Literary Folio especially the issue where they feature winners from the DLSU Annual Literary Awards.
You can check out the online version of Ang Pahayagang Plaridel at http://www.geocities.com/angpahayagangplaridel

I'm from UP but I don't like the Kule anymore. I used to admire those who produce it because they were so fearless in what they put out. But as I found out, the views presented are usually terribly one-sided. I therefore end up being cynical about what they print.

The thing with Kule is that it's uninhibited by any factor (well, maybe the financial aspect is an exception).

Quoted from Pen & Ink: "The oldest campus publication in the Philippines is passionate about keeping UP Diliman informed and being critical of stories that affect their community. 'The Collegian does not bow to anybody,' says Bacong [then EIC]. Its readers are equally charged, keeping the Collegian mailbag packed with strong opinions. The focus is on campus issues and on national stories relevant to UP students. The Collegian's voice is sought outside campus as well, having been quoted in national broadsheets.

The Collegian beat Today and the Philippine Daily Inquirer in running an editorial on the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). Inept school administrators were called "morons" and "bozos" for failing to address housing problems for UP employees. The top stories are the UP Board of Regents controversy, the VFA, and the hazing deaht of Alex Icasiano."

Meeh!

I agree with Mase, Picachu and Baby3na! The La Sallian and Plaridel are great! :D The La Sallian, in particular, is turning 40 years old. Compared to other publications, ours is quite young...but we're definitely giving our best. Right Baby3na? ;)

for me kule is a good publication and i especially like the comics part of "tokikot" because i find it funny though i think some find it corny. as for ust's varsitarian, i've read some issues of it (though i'm not from ust) and it's really a good publication. =)

I have never read a single issue of collegian (tama ba?), guidon, & varsitarian. but a lot of people have been saying that varsitarian's good.

ok ang The LaSallian, Plaridel, and Malate. pero syempre biased ako, pinaka-ok ang TLS! galing ako dun eh... :D
