XTCboi...

No particular criterion. :) You can make your own if you want. :) Most of the posters here I think have based their judgements on the people they know and how easily they related to them. :)

Me and my sisters got a great education in ICA-GH, and my brother likewise in XS. I can't really say which HS is best in the Philippines academically, but I'm thoroughly satisfied by the quality of students these two schools produce academically and socially, so I'm sending my kids there.

biased ko pero sasabihin ko na Miriam is one of the best schools in the Philippines. ngayon nga lang di ko na alam kung same pa rin kasi some of the great teachers i had then are not there anymore... :)

hmmm if so id say that schools like ateneo, xavier, st jude, and lsalle zobel should be commended. they have consistently done well in the ncee/nsat exams, always landing in the top five if not the top ten. hmmm this based on stuff i read years ago... where do one view the updated results anways?

Notre Dame of Greater Manila- they may not be The Best in academic reputation compare to Ateneo or Xavier, but the way they build up students social attitude impresses me...nothing like that can beat Notre...

pisay, here's why.

1. mean intelligence is defintely higher than other schools (our batch had the valedictorians/honors grads of assumption, ateneo/manila/davao, claret, upis, poveda, lsgh and other elem schools around the country)
2. 99+ got 99 or better percentile in the NCEE and we didn't give a hoot in preparing for it, geez who want to be caught studying for NCEE? half of the senior male dormers were either puyat or inebriated from the night's carousing.
3. math and science contests? please..we were regulars on the IMO
4. arts? granting that the humanities is just good, the strength of item #1 manages to win us writing contests. it's not bad really when you get doses of toffler and galbraith in HS.
5. religious or should i say catholic education? we can't really, considering the diversity in culture/religion of the student body. one dude was right in pointing out that religion should be taught at home and by the church.
6. students are boring? depende kung nasasakyan mo ang pinag-uusapan. you just have to be attentive in listening for the punchline or else miss the fun.

having said these would i consider myself better (intellectually) than the next pedro from "mataas na paaralan" or the rich kid in blue? not after i got butt-kicked in hexadecimal divide by a chinese from those schools in binondo. dang! was he fast.

ICA, GREENHILLS!!! And Xavier School, our neighbor!!!! Of course if you're not Filipino-Chinese, chances are you won't go to ICA, but if you are, then ICA and Xavier are definitely the ONLY good Chinese schools, who mold students into well-rounded individuals and not robots (excuse me!). actually, we're not really chinese schools coz we only have one chinese subject...definitely, and i'm saying this as a matter of fact, ICAns and Xaverians belong to the elite group of students who can converse and write well in both English and Tagalog. I always say that if my kids don't get into ICA or Xavier, I would not enroll them in a Chinese school, and would put them instead in Ateneo, Poveda, Assumption, Miriam, Southridge, or Woodrose...the best schools in the Philippines!

In my point of view, the three premier science high schools have the edge over the other hs's. PhilSci, ManilaSci, QCSci. I can also include UPIS. Kung batch '99 ang pag-uusapan, no high school can top MANILA SCIENCE. just look at their performance (collectively) sa NSAT, and other contests (local and international).

Ang yabang naman ni Badabing. Having d best minds doesnt necessarily mean that it is d best high school. Contests do not mean a thing in the real world. It is not a matter of how high u score in a test or how eloquent u r. D best high school is determined by the type of graduates they produce. Pisay produces graduates who comprise a very small fraction of the people who make this country work. My pisay classmates in u.p. are just like everybody else, there is nothing special about them nor are they d best students in this country. There will always be people better than you, badabing. :)

Kung batch '99 ang pag-uusapan, no high school can top MANILA SCIENCE. just look at their performance (collectively) sa NSAT, and other contests (local and international).
pwede na rin.pero kung magbibilangan talaga ng nsat rankings simula pa dati, lalabas na mas madalas magtop sa nsat ang philsci ...nangyari nga lang na natalo ng masci ang philsci sa nsat 2000.it varies from batch to batch pero consistent toppers talaga yung mga science hs na yan.nsat na sa 12 di ba?e di dun lang natin tingnan.babawi tiyak yung philsci..."in pursuit of excellence"..ika nga....nothing but the best.
upis?hindi rin siguro.binibigyan nila ng priority yung mga may connections o relations sa mga members ng up staff...they claim pa naman na upis is a "pilot school" like the sci-hs's...ayan tuloy...tinaguriang hi-school ng up pero ang passing rate ng mga students nila sa upcat e talo pa ng mga ibang sci hi-schools at private schools.mas fitting kung sasabihin nila na ang upis ay school para sa mga relatives and friends ng up staff...pero pilot school?ewan ko lang.

Ey! I think Philippine Science is the best!!! Aside from having an advanced curriculum and the best teachers and facilities, you get a taste of everything! You don't pay tuition and get stipends pa!

For all-girls schools, St Scho's the best. Poveda and Assumption are good too.
St Scho emphasizes well-roundedness. Ppl from stscho never get worried about balancing academics with extracurricular activities! :)

For exclusive boy schools, Ateneo & Xavier

For coed (after pisay): CSA or Zobel

i'm really biased so don't argue with me.

i think the philippine science high school is the BEST high school in the philippines.

filtering out a bit of my in-built bias i'd say pisay is the best academic high school in the country.

the best (or most notorious, most likely) would probably have to be batch 94. he he he.

also, i do not think it too far-fetched a proposition for a future philippine president (within the next ten years or so) to come from my alma mater.

the best exclusive high school would have to be sta. escolastica. this opinion is also HEAVILY biased and so, once again, i urge all of you not to argue.

what i don't get is anybody rating lasalle zobel ahead of pisay. money must have a deleterious effect on objective thinking.

The Ateneo de Manila High School

The Ateneo de Manila High School is a Filipino school which seeks to prepare its students not only to live as responsible and productive members of Filipino society but to make a critical difference in the currents and ideas that can direct the growth of Filipino life. Faced with the challenges of a developing nation in a world open to diverse cultural influences, the student must be prepared to appreciate the richness of his cultural heritage and be challenged to contribute to its enrichment.

The Ateneo de Manila is also a college preparatory school and as such it prepares students academically for the university.

Since the world in which we live in is in constant change, the academic preparation of an Atenean must stress both the acquisition of high-quality intellectual skills as well the intellectual flexibility which can adjust to and create change.

The Ateneo believes that a training in liberal education is the means to achieve this purpose. An Atenean is exposed to the rich literary heritage of different cultures, developing habits of orderly thought, critical reflection, imaginative, clear, and persuasive communication together with the rigorous mental discipline of mathematics and the sciences.

Above all, the Atenean needs an understanding of his world from the perspective of his Catholic faith and its teachings.

As a Jesuit School, the Ateneo is guided by the Jesuit philosophy of education. The Ateneo's distinctive quality is its Jesuit or Ignatian identity. As a Jesuit or Ignatian-inspired school, its thrust is the formation of its students into "well-honed instruments in the hands of God." Central to this thrust of formation is "cura personalis," the personal care and concern for the individual person. Such care and concern are exercised primarily for the students, as well as for other the other members of the Ateneo High School community. "Cura personalis" aims to lead a person to a realistic knowledge of self, realizing one's strengths and also accepting one's weaknesses and shortcomings. Ultimately, though, this knowledge leads to a freedom of self, a freedom to commit. In Ignatian tradition it is to commit to Christ - "to see Christ more clearly, to love him more dearly, and follow him more nearly."

Goal of An Ateneo Education

The general goal of an Ateneo High School education is, as mentioned earlier, the formation of a young man into a "well-honed instrument in the hands of God." Through "cura personalis," it aims for the total formation of its students, a formation that begins with the students' life and developmental growth. The aim of this total formation is expressed in the following text of the Ateneo High School's Profile of the Graduate at Graduation.

Profile Of The Graduate At Graduation

The Ateneo de Manila High School, inspired by the Ignatian tradition and guided by Ignatian pedagogy, aims to mold young men into future leaders who will serve the Filipino society and contribute to the global community.

Upon the student's graduation from the High School, he will have been formed into a young man who

is CHRIST-CENTERED;

is intellectually and academically COMPETENT;

has a well-formed CONSCIENCE, with the courage to defend what is right and to right what is wrong;

has COMPASSION for others, especially the poor and disadvantaged -- a compassion that leads him to a life of service and work for justice and peace; and

will live out his COMMITMENT to his mission in life; to God and to society.

elo mascians!:)

batch 2000 po ako.

ei everybody, it's true na masci is the first science high shool in RP. ginaya lang ng iba dyan after some time. at hindi lamang noong 1999 natalo ng masci ang pisay sa NSAT. as i can recall, a provincial high school topped the NSAT then and we, MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL was 2nd. sorry guys pero hindi pa next ang pisay, another science high school in the metro ranked higher than pisay so ewan ko lang parang 4th lang ata sila.

for the mascians here, i'd say kahit ganon si daisy, madami siyang nagawang maganda sa skul natin. nung umalis siya sa masci naging ewan na ang alma mater natin. sayang nga eh. pero personally, she was very mabait sa akin. ewan ko kung bakit. inside, she's a very good person. nga lang pag nasa skul na, she ehibits a diff persona, one which the best high school must have. kung titignan natin ngayon, TAMA siya eh. too bad...she has to leave.

anyways, i really can't say which is better, Masci or Pisay pero ang masci ang may hawak sa amin ay ang city of manila lang...ang pisay may DOST pa. sa masci, sobrang bulok ang mga facilities i have to admit (umm ewan ko kung ngayon maganda na), some of our teachers well, hindi tulad ng pisay na ive heard has professors na lahat Masteral grads na. sa masci hindi ganun. we don't have stipends or other benefits pisay studes have. the only thing free sa amin is our tuition fee. we also have a bad cafeteria. well, un lang ang kaya ni Mayor Atienza eh. sorry na lang kami.

but still, we are as competitive if not better than pisay.:)

the philippine science high school
the university of the philippines rural high school
manila science high school
quezon city science high school

these are the only 4 schools who have sent 5 or more students to the intarmed program in the past 3 years.
philippine science HS - 13
UPRHS - 10
Manila Science HS - 8
Quezon City Science HS - 8

the UPCAT passing rate of UPRHS is also phenomenal at around 95%. and yes, this has been a regular occurence. it's actually amazing to note that nobody knows about uprhs, the school is not only underrated, it's unknown.

MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL!! heard of the news about three masci kids topping the Intel science & engineering fair in san jose, CA (it's a worldwide competition). One of their rewards is to have a (or 3?) meteor/s named after them (this has something to do w/ the essay they wrote).. *okay* whoa! heavy!

theyve won in more math & science competitions than any school in the country. maski ganon lang yung mga facilities don and medyo lack of support from DECS.

Well, nung high school ako, I think nag-offer ang DOST na "ampunin" ang Masci, but the chismis was di pumayag ang principal. I'm really not sure. I'm proud of Mascian achievers. Nakakatuwang isipin dahil wala naman silang monthly allowance yet they were able to excel.

No offense to PIsay and Masay Peeps, cause I also got a lot of freinds there...but people shouldnt forget the other aspects of an education, life is not all about academics...you also have to learn to be socially aware, to be well rounded. Kaya personally, Id go for schools who offer a well rounded curriculum, di lang sciences, but also social sciences, languages, good values...etc... ;)

Well..I guess I'm talking from hindsight, ksi I'm already a doctor. But from what I've seen and from what I've observed...I'd say it's Ateneo, Xavier for boys, and St. Scho Manila, ICA, St Theresa, Mirriam for girls.

No offense to PIsay and Masay Peeps, cause I also got a lot of friends there...but people shouldn't forget the other aspects of an education, life is not all about academics...you also have to learn to be socially aware, to be well rounded. Kaya personally, I'd go for schools who offer a well rounded curriculum, di lang sciences, but also social sciences, languages, good values...etc... ;)

as i understand, Ateneo, Xavier, St. Scho Manila, ICA, St Theresa, Miriam are exclusive schools catering to a specific gender right? and further, have a majority as students children of the upper and middle class families, right? if you agree, how can you argue that these schools provide a more socially aware environment than Pisay? in our time, the student body not only encompassed the whole economic and social strata but the religious and cultural as well. if there was anything exclusive, it probably was intelligence.
will we not have a deeper understanding of the world around us because of this environment, being immersed not only a week or a month but four years of adoloscent life where impressions are lasting? i remember disliking and sniding at our batchmates from assumption, maryknoll, st. theresa's, what with there weird conio accents, but after knowing them personally they too are normal people, to my surprise, with just a lot more gadgets. in fact our interests and influences were so far apart that a number joined the military, the underground movement, the arts and well yes, a whole lot in science and technology. geez, give us a break we're philippine science high school.
and mind you our social sciences and humanities load is nothing to sneeze at. noli, fili, toffler, kafka, tolstoy, galbraith, santos, lumbera, etc, etc. not that i understood nor appreciated these but only to illustrate that the resources and instruction were made available to us.

languages and good values..hhmmm you're not saying that we're retards in communication and barbarians in manners eh? perhaps you could clarify. i'd say my grammar is rather faulty at times but i doubt if the next person with adequate schooling in english and wit ;), would fail to grasp what i'm trying to say.

:DMAKATI SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

Yes... my dears, there exists such a beautiful and wondrous school... Are you wondering what it looks like? Well, have you seen a public high school in Makati... it looks exactly like that... Trust me, di gaano creative si Honorable Mayor Jojo Binay, but he's one heck of a great mayor... hands down!

Anyway, mga reasons why I believe this is the BEST school are these:
(1) We were the 3rd in the NSATs... in the whole Philippines.
(2) We do not only delve in S&T stuff... pampamilya din kami... Hehe... Nakapanood ka na ba ng CARACOL? Hehe... sori, di ka kasi Makati nakatira eh...
(3) Mr. Roberto V. Anir is the BEST PRINCIPAL in the face of the planet... No kidding... Hands down!
(4) There is a really diverse mix of teachers... kaya lahat na ng pahirap at kawalang hiyaan ay maeexperience mo... at least, di ka na macuculture shock pag dating ng college...
(5) Magaganda at gwapo lahat ng tao... Hehe...
(6) Walking distance lang kami sa ROCKWELL!!!
(7) Finally, dun ako galing okei? So, magaling talaga siya... Hehe... Intarkid nga pala ako... Hehe... yabang ba?

Poblacion, City of Makati!!!

By the way, if God gave me a choice to study in another school... (anuman *** other school na un...) I will still prefer MAKSCI over them... Hehe... dramatic ba?

kumanta ba? he he

ON TOPIC:
I wouldn't mind sending my children to Science high schools. Laking tipid din yon ah! [/QUOTE]

ang alam ko rin kaya hindi under DOST ang masci e dahil kay mam banta. pero ok lang yun, mascians are able to make do with what the city of manila gives them. it's great that masci grads are not forced to go into science/math fields when they go to college, unlike pisay students.

the subjectivity-rating of this thread is so way off the charts it just hit the floor ^_^

looking back, through your personalized set of rose-tinted glasses, your highschool memories will always be among the happiest of your life, that wonderful time before the real world started... even though, most probably, they were among the most terrible.

ah, the quirks of life.

honestly, i love my high school. for me, the PSHS will always be no. 1.

after reading allot of em, id have to say me ol school xavier the best.

xavier and ateneo are run by the exact same people, The jesuits. Thats why if you go to ateneo college and look at one of the insignias on one of the buildings, the crest looks really close to the xavier one.

why is xavier number one for me? well, like others have said, ateneo is one of the best, and since xavier and ateneo are the same, that would put them on equal levels. Then you put in the part that xavierians have chinese as an extra subject. Its a requirement to get a xavier certificate. This makes us a little bit higher up there (no offense to ateneo, trust me, if ateneo weren't so much farther from makati than xavier is, id would've gone there as a kid.)

in xavier, we have a 15% chance of passing in nursery. they are ery stringent in that part. I just feel proud i guess because i am pure filipino and i was able to survive my whole schooling life from nursery to the end of high school there.

Another thing to add, we never seem to get any kickouts or drop outs from La Salle or Ateneo in our school, usually the ones we get from other schools are already fluent in chinese.

on a side note, i didnt know this till my last year, but while going through the net, i found out xavier is considered an international school (haha all our friends laughed at this thought, the cheapest IS in the Phil, "Pare, where you from? IS Makati, what bout you?" "IS SAN JUAN!" hahaha

these are my biases though, but its already understood among xavierians, well at least my friends, that philippine science schools are the best among all high schools, private and public (so lets not bring em in) haha

have u heard of LSQC? lourdes school of quezon city? well it used to topple ateneo de manila highschool in the 70's onwards. garnered so many awards. believe me, there is a room full of it! kaya lang... wala, power tripping na ng mga bagong administrators. like parang sobrang strikto nila ngayon, eh, kung tumanggap naman ng studyante, from 80 percent in the entrance test, ngayon 70 nalang. i heard it from a faculty. tsk tsk tsk. pero over all, matunog pa din ang LSQC noh! ask your fathers!;)

not much of the hype...pero dito nagsimula ang mga presidents, heroes, politicians, revolutionarios and filipino saints natin. mga produkto na nagpasiklab ng mga puso ng mga katipuneros. some of them were:

Pres. Manuel L. Quezon
Pres. Sergio Osmeña
Don Vicente Madrigal
Atty. Leonard de Vera
Mr. Jose Luis Yulo Jr.
Mr. Pastor Saycon
Congressman Sergio Apostol
x-congressman Freddie Webb
Y.O.U. Spokeperson Baron Cervantes (R.I.P.)
Bishop Bacani
Sen. Tito Sotto
ST. Liem dela Paz
Gov. Chavit Singson
Prof. Dr. Enrique Syquia - was the honorary general of the Hashemite, Kingdom of Jordan in the Philippines from 1987 to 1996. Currently, he is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to the Philippines.
Dr. Isabelo V. Ongtenco. - He has the distinction of being the first Filipino Cardiologist to perform Mitral Balloon Valvuloplasty at the St. Lukes Medical Center together with two other doctors.
Actors Vic and Val Sotto, Raymund Lauchengco, German Moreno etc.

i am not yet sure if hubert webb graduated from letran high school.

This is old stuff you would say. It’s both old and new. Old, because 80% of the heroes of the 1896-98 revolution sacrificed their life for freedom. They were Letranistas par excellence. New, because the big names in today’s bloodless revolution against a government of immorality and corruption are also Letranistas. They liberally gave of themselves for the country they love.

I think we should consider UP Integrated School. Most of the students do eventually go to Ateneo,DLSU and of course UP for college wth a number of them in the INTARMED program or given scholarship grants. Former Pres. Ramos is even an alumni as well as John Lesaca. This just shows how well-rounded the individuals here are.Just a thought!

San Beda College!!!

A school with a rich and glorious history manifested by its students who have indeed answered the clarion call and excelled not only in their college life but also in life itself.

Run by the Benedictine monks who have kept Christianity alive during Europe's Dark Ages, San Beda High School's mission-vision is to mold fully human, wholly Christian, and truly Filipino leaders of the country.

People like Raul Roco, Manny Pangilinan, Herbert Bautista, Ninoy Aquino, Jaime Galvez Tan, Sonny Belmonte, Carlos Loyzaga, Benjie Paras, and Bodjie Pascua have ones walked on its corridors, showing that San Beda is the best high school in the country.

Indeed, history has proven that Bedans excel in different fields. Guided by St. Benedict's virtues of Ora et Labora (Prayer and Work), San Beda has and will continue to produce great men who will prove that they will win all challenges that come their way... for San Beda, our country, and God!

That in all things, God may be glorified!

I don't want to bash or anything, pero I don't want the other pexers to be misinformed.

And Chavit Singson? Hehe! Instrumental nga siya sa pagpapatalsik kay Estrada pero he himself is corrupt! Magnanakaw din yan. Playing safe at nagmamalinis lang. When will people realize that he is NOT a person to idolize? He only wanted to save himself at the expense of another thief who is no better than him.

Yun lang. Peace tayo ha. With its rich history, Letran is a good school.

Pax!

the word best is subjected. Without clearly defining the criteria of the word, we end up arguing apples and oranges. Thus, to say that a certain school is the best; we need to firslty categorized what we mean by the word best.

Having said all that crap, I am proposing a 'different' view of schooling. The reputation or the bestness of one's school is not important; but school ought to bring the best of you. It has to give u a social life but also teaches you stuff that you find hard, but not hard enough that you cant comprehend. Thus, if you enjoy ur school experience, then u went to the right school. And that school is the best for you.

In this way, we can accomodate the subjective nature of bestness, but also come up with an objective criteria on how we can look at 'best'

Mataas na Paaralang Pang-Agham ng Maynila ;)

why?

1. we are the first high school in the Philippines to have a strong science and mathematics-based curriculum patterned after the science high schools in the United States during the 1960s. we were established in 1963, philippine science high school came two years later.

by the way, 40 years na ang alma mater ko. :)

2. we don't have the best facilities (some even say we have the worst facilities) but the students deliver, on tests and academic competitions.

4. only Masci and Phisci can boast of consistent high passing percentage of the UPCAT. i don't have the stats for Phisci but this is what i remember during my time (which was part of the glorious Banta Years. ;) ).

1994: 99% - only 3 students didn't pass
for 1995 and 1996: it was from the 90-95% range. i'm sorry but i can't remember the exact figures.
1997: 90% - this was the year my batch (MSHS '98) took the UPCAT

5. Once people hear that you're from MSHS or PSHS, they would be looking up to you because they know your caliber as a student. However, it's up to you on how you handle the expectations of other people.

6. we are inside the school from 7 am to 7 pm during our junior year. for the others, it's 6 am to 5 or 6 pm. ;) and we're talking here of official school hours. it excludes travel time to and from school and your study hours. just imagine at what time those students living outside Metro Manila or located at the outskirts of the metropolis have to wake up to get to school on time and at what time they sleep (if ever they do) to comply with all the school requirements.

7. during our time, we have at least 4-6 quizzes each day, everyday. ;)

8. we have a lot of "elective" subjects. it's somewhat a misnomer since we were not really given the option to choose those elective subjects...we were obliged to take them. take this for an example.

in our third year, we have 2 english subject, 3 math subjects and 3 science courses. the 2 math and 2 science elective courses are actually taken up by first year college students. ;)

that's all.

knee jerk answer ko sana are the schools i had attended, pero...maraming palpak na products din sila, even within my own batch.

in my present business, kung saan-saan nanggaling na high school yung mga top-of-the-heap na tao. as in, "never heard" na high schools. marami din ang mga trained sa 1st world at the post-grad level na walang masabi kapag hinarap sa mga "purely local" counterparts in this profession.

so the answer to "which is the best high school" is complex. kapag motivated ang tao, maski saan pang lupalop...maybe just putting the child in the best-equipped and most broad-minded school you can afford will do.

I used to like Ateneo High School pero andami na jologs. La Salle Zobel used to be as academically competent as Ateneo High School pero nagiging skul bukul na rin after they started implementing a 60:1 student-teacher ratio.

For me, my rankings are:

Southridge School, Woodrose School
Southville International School
British School
Xavier School
Poveda Learning Center
Assumption College - High School
La Salle Zobel
Ateneo High School
La Salle Green Hills

These are high schools that give you a good academic background PLUS good interpersonal skills and confidence (highly valued in the corporate world)

Other high schools that are superior in academics but poor in providing social skills (by rank):

Philippine Science
Manila Science
Manresa School
Don Bosco Makati
San Beda College

My (biased) ranking:

1. Ateneo de Manila
2. ICA
3. Xavier School
4. Woodrose
5. ISM / British
6. Southridge
7. De La Salle Zobel
8. Assumption
9. Poveda
10. La Salle Greenhills

I didn't include the science high schools.

i am a true blue atenean [GS '95, HS '99, LS '03, MA...] and i have relatives/friends who went to/are in ateneo, lsgh, lourdes qc & manda, letran, marist, san beda manila & alabang, southridge, xavier, csa, assumption anti & san lo, ica, miriam, poveda, st bridget, st theresa's, st scho manila & marikina, st paul's pasig & qc, woodrose etc and most of them have turned out to be good people, and by that i mean smart [whether book smart or street smart], sociable, principled and God-fearing... it will always be an endless debate as to which school offers the best holistic education because mostly it will always be up to the student -- the person. i've always believed that more than the school makes the student, it's the students that make the school.

in ateneo's case, the students that have made the school are the likes of jose rizal, ninoy aquino, del pilar, manglapus, dela costa and many more, but also the likes of erap & mike arroyo... i guess in the end i choose to believe that in any school there are those products we can be proud of and be [for the lack of a better term] ashamed of... i'm just glad that in ateneo there are more people who make a positive difference than those who don't :)

Last time I checked, there's no entrance exam yet that measures social skills, let alone factoring in social skills in college admissions.

When the subject of Science HS application came up, my father (with his multiple prestigious international scholarships for Medicine) discouraged me on the grounds that "there's more to life than science" during adolescence. His definition of an "Educated Person" had little to do with a PhD.

Pang-languages lang ang HS ko? Its a good thing that I didn't know that when I tried out for UP Diliman, Ateneo, & La Salle as a science major. It didn't occur to me then that they'd be tough, & that impression remains.

A good school can only help so much. A student's attitude is critical, i.e., one does what one must do, & the smart ones find the easiest way to do it-- ha!
