I remember this beauty pageant sa isang noon time show. Ang tanong sa contestant "At what age do you plan to marry ?"... silence from contestant... Sabi ni host: "More or less ano ???" Sagot si Contestant: "More"... boo yung crowd... sagot si contestant "ay less pala"

One of the most common mistakes:

Wrong: YOUR right.
Right: YOU'RE right.
Right: Have it YOUR way.

???§ÎNNëÐ???
Nov 25, 1999, 11:51 PM
NewtoN:
As regards in behalf and on behalf, these two are correct but users tend to misuse them:

ex: in behalf
The Sisters of Charity will hold a benefit concert in behalf of the Beacon Orphanage.

-in behalf is used as "for the benefit of"

ex: on behalf
Kris Aquino accepted the award on behalf of Philip Salvador.

-on behalf is used as a to-represent clause. Kris represents Philip because of his absence.

Swatch:
not sure about that either!

she:
your right may also be correct.

ex: If this is your right to use you're right, so be it.

but of course, in your context, using your right is a big mistake. oh yeah your second example hit my point.

Yoshi: I read an explanation about the words inflammable and flammable in a book. The reason why they do it is because a lot of people thought that "inflammable" meant incapable of being burned. So finally, in frustration, they made the gas truck signs "flammable" instead of "inflammable", even if flammable isn't strictly a word. That way people would understand that their cargo is volatile. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

other unbelievable mistakes:

1.
incorrect:
between 17 to 30

correct:
between 17 and 30

2.
incorrect:
He is a very unique personality.

correct:
He is a unique personality.

Unique means "one of a kind." Therefore, words like very, so, or extremely or comparatives or superlatives should not used to modify it. If it is one of a kind, it cannot be compared! - grammar slammer

Yoshi:
alright is all right, though considered a nonstandard abbreviation.

The one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <;the first two years of medical school were alright -- Gertrude Stein>;. - merriam webster

1. Compliment vs Complement

Compliment - remark spoken in praise

Complement - something needed to complete a whole

2. Can vs May

Can - able or having to do something
e.g. Can you solve this problem?

May - used to ask or to grant permission; also expresses the probability of something happening
e.g. - May I go to the master's bedroom?

as a probability - e.g. It may rain tomorrow.

I had this teacher in high school who used to ask us, "Are you agree?" :)

One thing that always annoys me is interchanging response with respond. It's quite often that i hear people say "Hindi pa siya nag-reresponse e."

But my real pet peeve is interchanging may and can. Starting a question with may means you're asking a permission to do something <;e.g. May I turn left?>; But starting a question with can pertains to your capability to do something <;e.g. Can I dance like her?>;

Run-On Sentences:

A run-on sentence consists of two or more main clauses that are run together without proper punctuation. Sometimes even sentences which are technically correct are easier to read if they are made into shorter sentences. We often speak in run-on sentences, but we make pauses and change our tone so people can understand us. But when we write, no one can hear us, so sometimes we must break our sentences into shorter units so that they do not sound run-on.

Incorrect: The boy showed us his tickets someone gave them to him.

Correct: The boy showed us his tickets. Someone gave them to him.

I can't understand the resistance this thread is getting. What's wrong about learning the correct way of saying/writing ideas in English?

I suppose this thread is not exclusively for English anyway. Pwede ring talakayin ang mga karaniwang pagkakamaling nagagawa sa pagbigkas at pagsusulat sa ating wikang pambansa.

Halimbawa,
Mali: Nakakatuwa sila ross at MsEerie.
Tama: Nakatutuwa sina ross at MsEerie.

Maybe someone can teach us the grammatical rules of the Visayan, Pampango, etc dialects?

By the way does the word Kapampangan refer to the dialect or the people? What makes it different from Pampango?
