The behavior of the UAAP schools' crowd and players is a VERY GOOD indication of the quality of their university.

Unlike some others, the De La Salle fans and players NEVER:

1. threw trash on the court
2. never once retaliated on any of their opposing team's players who shamelessly were making sahod to them, elbowing them in the face or intentionally tripping them in FULL VIEW of the general public.
3. resorted to insulting streamers against their opponents' school and players.
4. tried to assault their opposing team's players.
5. never sourgraped when they lost games

Aside from academics, the best university should also be able to instill into its students the right values and morals.

Anyway, i just want to comment on something. You made a very big and unforgivable mistake of alluding to the all-knowing, omniscient Dominicus(naku Dominicus is a God pala) as a janitor(Huh?? God of the JAnitors??? He wouldnt like that very much CJ). Not that being a janitor is bad in itself(kaka put down mo lang yung being a janitor eh tsk tsk). For all you know(we are not know it all's like you sinned and dominicus), a lowly janitor is way above someone hiding behind a very negative pseudonym like Bad Girl, in terms of virtues, values in life, and breeding. But the fact is, Dominicus is someone who's even so humble to communicate with the likes of you and your fellow Taft-educated peers.(Generalization again....would you like me to generalize also??? Basta ito lang ha...I'm not just speaking for myself, but for all of my LaSallian friends as well. What matters most is that we're all very happy & contented with our school (I wouldn't even THINK of studying elsewhere...Hindi ko basta-basta ipagpapalit yung absolute bliss na nararamdaman ko daily.), we don't fear for our lives (kasi madaming guard, closed campus kami, at desente ang mga tao), and we're practically assured of great job oppurtunities after we graduate(it's a known fact that major companies prioritize graduates from UP, Ateneo, and LaSalle above all other universities). Therefore, we can provide our future families with good lives.

My dad graduated from UST, yet he FORBADE me to take the entrance exam there(as if naman I had an intention to do so...). My dad is a businessman. Also, he, like Dominicus(DAW), is a journalist (he writes 2 weekly columns for the Philippine Star). Yet he said that he doesn't owe his Alma Mater anything, and that if he could live his life all over again, hindi talaga siya maga-aral sa UST. (Pero defend to death siya about his old highschool...)
Ayan. Sa mismong alumnus na ng UST galing yan, ha. Ewan ko na lang kung hindi pa sapat na proof yan na, WITHOUT A DOUBT, mas superior ang DLSU sa USTe.

Ito pa. Magikot ka sa major high schools(like Ateneo high, DLSZ, LSGH, Xavier, Assumption, Poveda, IS, etc) . Tanungin mo yung 3rd-4th year students kung ano yung dream school nila. Sa tingin mo meron sa kanilang sasagot ng "UST ang dream school ko!!!"?? Nye. Kung meron man ciguro isa, dalawa...

He constantly joined contests (& won), and I am EXTREMELY proud of him. *****, di pa ba obvious na kaya ayaw niya sa UST kasi KADIRI TALAGA DON?! Di yung dad ko yung may problema. For your information, Xiaoyu's dad isn't just a well known print journalist (he writes for no less than the Philippine Star alongside Teddy Benigno & Quinito Henson. It's arguably the best newspaper in the country today), he's a famous TV personality as well. No, he's not one of those artistas na paiyak-iyak na ewan...he hosts about 4 shows (if i'm not mistaken). One has been on the air for about a decade now. The ratings of the shows are high, considering that the time slots are really late. (I'm not in the position to mention the titles of the shows...let's leave that to Xiaoyu, kung gusto niya). I bet pinapanood ng mga magulang niyo yung mga shows niya...malamang kayo din.
And, he also holds a very high position in the PBA (he holds the highest position i think). He also heads one of the biggest MNCs in the country.
Kaya sa susunod, pili-piliin mo yung mga sasabihan mo ng loser. Meron ka bang TV shows? Nagsusulat ka ba ng column kahit sa barangay publication niyo man lang? Meron ka bang position sa PBA? Baka ikaw ang loser.

I thought this topic is about which university, in our opinion, is the best?

We all keep saying that our universities are the best...but everytime we post something to degrade someone else, we contradict ourselves in our claim that our university is the best. If our claims had any truth in them, we would not say hurtful generalizations and put down people whom we have never even had the pleasure of knowing. Instead, we would just be glad and thankful that our parents are capable enough to send us to good schools.

Nevermind if xiaoyu's dad is stupid or not. Nevermind if he's richer than Bill Gates or more intelligent than Einstein. That would be the outcome of his life and the level of his success.

Sure, in his time, his university was said to be the best. He was also one of the reasons why his university became the best. Now if he ever entered this page and read all the posts, he would know that his decision of not sending his child to his former alma mater was indeed a wonderful decision. He would also probably worry about the kind of education being given in all the universities mentioned because of the kind of answers being posted in here.

Furthermore, I don't think any of us have really achieved anything much to claim that we are in this level or that. We have not even proven our worth and already we are claiming that we are better than the rest. Let's leave family discussions at home where each person can hear what is being said about him and where he will be able to speak for himself.

Let's just concentrate on ourselves so that our parents will be able to see that what they spent on us is worth all their hard work. Let's concentrate on problems that really need to be solved in this generation and let's not create more. In fact, let's all work together because sooner or later, we will all be mixed up in the workplace and it won't matter much which school we came from. The only thing that will matter is whether or not we shall be able to make our respective businesses prosper.

Another thing...about friendships. I don't think any of us befriend people because of where they study. It doesn't mean that because a person is from UST, La Sallians will not befriend him. I, for one, have very good friends who study in UST, UP, AMA, ADMU, DLSU, etc. I even have friends who were not even able to finish highschool! (This, by the way, does not make them stupid. There isn't a single person on earth who is stupid. We all have our special capabilities right?) Anyway, where they studied never hindered me from 'stooping to their levels' as some of you call it.

We also don't choose friends for the amount of money they have. If we do, then that cannot really be called friendship right?

Koosh, BadGirl...you're my friends, not because you're both fellow La Sallians of mine but because you accept me for who I am and I like you for who you are.

Darkmatter...you're from UST...we've had our share of bickerings over school matters...I had a fun time arguing about them and I'm glad you're my friend.

Azy...you're from UP...but who cares where you study?...you're my internet friend :)

All the rest of my friends...in real life or in the net...it's a real pleasure knowing you guys!

I wish we could all just be friends. If we can't all get along, I wish we'd just mind our own business then...we achieve more that way.

Opinion ko lang 'to, but the best university is where a student can comfortably grow
and mature into an adult capable of decent and responsible actions. Since a person's individuality will always be subjective, then the matter of which university in the Philippines is also subjective. Marx read in La Salle will always be the same Marx read in Ateneo, UST, UP, FEU, etc. Likewise, the square root of any negative number will always equal to 'i', regardless of the school (at least, I hope so). So, let's all stop our bickering over the "best university", when all it does is just widen the gap between us. Peace nalang :)

I don't consider your school that bad - only that I give more weight on the students' ability to understand. They must have, as it were, enough intelligence.

Since you guys keep on saying that the best criterion of quality education should be metered on the kind of behaviour students showed in the recent UAAP games, I will try to give you a lucid explanation that your hypothesis/premise IS INDEED VERY VERY WEAK!

No living creature (I mean rational) can distinguish what is good and bad without the presence of either the two (hindi mo malalaman ang mabuti kung walang di kanais-nais). That's why there is this saying "there's no perfect human being!". Only the Divene One is exempted from this . Even saints in their lifetime here, erred!

In as much as a university wants to instill ethics (fundamental principles that guide human behaviour) and morals ( the task of interpreting and actualizing such principles in the light of present situation), it cannot still guarantee good conduct.

We have to accept that at the outset, in whatever it teaches, a university deals directly with cognitive process. Thus, it can teach ethics, but it cannot assure a moral life, right?

There are many principles for the formation of university students. But a univesity like the UST can only go so far in imparting such principles. The transmission and absorption of ethical norms and moral values take place within a much broader conceptual range of education that goes beyond university instruction.

To make it short, whatever ethics is being taught in universities does not immediately find general acceptance in society. In fact, students often realize that the ethics they learn in school have to compete with other ethics prevalent in society.

Eh, ilang oras lang ba ang pananatili mo sa school mo sa isang araw? Kung madalas ka sa Television at internet ay talagang maiinfluence ka ng kanilang ethics.

What is moral in school may not be moral outside. That's why there is this long debate on pornography in MTRCB.

Besides how many Thomasians who acted unruly during that game? Very few! it was just overlooked by you people who relentlessly and generally say that Thomasians are barbarians.

Can you control emotions? Even in literature, it takes time to purge emotion. No humans are devoid of emotion!

If this is the case, eh di para narin sinabi na the best din ang FEATI at ang MLQU, two schools w/c I personnaly believe, is better then UST in terms of academic and moral orientation.

The best university would not produce such horrible, insane, foolish, LOW LIFE scums like the barbarians who threw bottled water during the UAAP, the full-of-nonsense jerks who suddenly vanished from this BB, the NPA looking idiot who made a fool out of himself during the UAAP finals and lastly, hoop creeps like Valeriano.

UST has nothing to be proud of because they had nothing to be proud of in the first place. Their buildings are deteriorating and long overdue for demolition. The campus is so open, even maniacs and thieves can enter. UST can't even guarantee the safety of its students (remember the Hepa). And of course, the numerous floods which has haltered their classes and their intellectual growth.

what is ethics anyway? is it primarily a set of norms to be transmitted and absorbed? or a way of being which is to be cultivated and discovered? because if ethics is more of the latter, then it should definitely go beyond the confines of the classroom.

[To make it short, whatever ethics is being taught in universities does not immediately find general acceptance in society. In fact, students often realize that the ethics they learn in school have to compete with other ethics prevalent in society.]

"To make it short" is an awkward phrase. "In short" or "in brief" should be preferred.

[What is moral in school may not be moral outside. That's why there is this long debate on pornography in MTRCB.]

i hope this statement is simply mis-phrased. otherwise, this statement reeks of cultural relativism. maybe what is being meant is "what is acceptable..." because, of course, morality is not principally about rules and taboos, as it is about determining and debating in the light of reason what truly deserves praise or condemnation by all.

That's just because subsidized kayo ng government. Kung hindi, walang-wala na kayo. You wouldn't have enough financial resources to even be a competitive learning institution. We definitely have to give it up to La Salle and Ateneo for their efforts in raising the level of education in the Philippines even without the help of the government. The fact that they reached #71 and #72 respectively in the Asiaweek survey is a big achievement considering the fact that they used their own resources in making them competitive internationally. Many colleges and universities around the world get a lot of help from their respective governments which help them become competitive. UP is just one of them. So, explain why the Dominican friars of UST, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) of Ateneo and the Brothers of the Christian Schools of La Salle count among the TOP 100 HIGHEST EARNING CORPORATIONS OF THE PHILIPPINES? So, corporation na pala ang isang "Non-Stock, non-profit firm"? And how would you explain one Jesuit priest from Ateneo saying that for private and religious schools, it seems that they don't care for the quality but rather take education as some sort of "commodity for the privileged"?

Aren't you pissed of that your paying high tuition fees in your school, yet you don't get quality education? Nakakawalang gana ata yun ah, kaya nga siguro kayo hindi naging #1 kasi :

2. Our teachers are service oriented, and they work not for money but service to the country for the welfare of the students. NOT MONEY.

3. And lastly, Asiaweek still have the credibility to choose who's the real top University not any individual from a particular school,

It doesn't really matter which university in the Philippines is best.....because the educational system here stinks! According to Asiaweek, the best colleges here are at the bottom of the rankings. A recent study (I don't recall who did the study, but it was recently in the newspaper) ranked Philippine schools at the bottom of the list, just above Bangaladesh (if I'm not mistaken).

While there are several more problems, the Philippines needs to concentrate on solving 3 major problems:
1. The garbage problem - why do people treat this place like a garbage can?
2. Bringing in foreign investors
3. IMPROVING THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

So stop making yourselves feel better by arguing that your alma mater is #1. The best school here is not world-class.
