View Full Version : My Big Mistake (...help!)

Hi fellow PExers!
I made the very big (and silly!) mistake of declaring my desired salary during my Initial interview with this Multinational Co. The thing is, when I went through subsequent interviews and the real tasks/responsibilities of the job became clear, I found my asking price rather inadequate. :( (As I would probably need to relocate, get new sets of clothes, work longer hours, etc...)
Is there hope for me yet? Would it still be alright to negotiate if in case they gave me the amount I originally asked for?
I could really use some advise here guys most especially from our HR practitioners in the forum. :depressed:
Thank you and may God bless each of us! :)

Ok lang yun kasi nasa interview pa lang yun. Pag contract signing na maybe you can negotiate.

I think I really have no choice but to try and re-negotiate then... :depressed:
Have any of you guys done this before? Any tips?

You can maybe try to say that you have another offer so you can bargain with them but this is RISKY. you may end up not getting the job at all. pero i suggest that you wait until they present the job offer sheet/contract and you bargain from there. baka naman mas malaki din i-offer nila. i had another experience na yun nakalagay sa job offer sheet ko, mas malaki sa asking salary ko. intayin mo muna. good luck!

thanks for the tip... though, i think it's a lot safer to be honest. the deception might blow up on my face eh... :( i'm really praying that they give me a good offer na so i won't have to bargain... :depressed:

FIND OUT WHAT THE NEEDS OF THE OTHER PERSON(Company) ARE AND TRY TO MEET THEM WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF YOUR OWN GOALS.... "The Art of Negotiation"
"we sometimes have to take risks."
Calculate the risk. Minimize it. Then negotiate.
By the way, it's not Big Mistake. Lucky you, you have this one.. others are none.

Thank you for your suggestions... and I'd really appreciate some more. :)
Have any of you negotiated for a higher starting pay before? How did you go about it?

in my case it happened that the amount i asked for was not the one i got when the hr mgr talked to me on my final interview, nevertheless i accepted knowing the type of company i will be getting into.
few months after my proby period, my regular salary was increased by 25%! :rotflmao:

Espoir, how did your job offer go?

pag tinanong ka kasi kung magkano tanungin mo kung magkano offer nila. O kaya magresearch ka ng industry average tapos sabihin mo ito ang average and i expect to get a salary not lower than that.

grim_reaper1814 is correct. u shouls really know the range of salary for that certain position. are fresh graduates also open for negotiating? i mean, we still don't have that "bargaining skill" because wala pa naman kaming proven success or work experience (aside from school credentials, that is) so usually, when the employer says.. 12k ang salary, more often than not, we just say.. "YES IT'S OK.." :( how to deal with that??

To everyone who cared to give their two cents worth -- you have my deepest gratitude. I am very pleased to announce that I got the job and at a much better offer than what I was expecting... So... thank you so much!
May God bless all of you! :)

can you bargain? if you're that desperate to get a job, well, then you can't. because it will show in your eagerness. when you bargain for a price, if you don't like their offer, then you turn it down. only then will they think of increasing their offer to you (assuming you're such a catch). if this is suppose to be your first job, and there are no other offers, don't you think you are in a tight position of either accepting or declining the offer.

yes, paano?
Ang pagkakaalam ko kailangan muna ng bala para makabaril...... improve yourself and then believe me, wala nang bargaining involved once you master your craft.

kasi hired nako sa Company A, pero wala pang contract na napirmahan. wala pa ren medical. Suppossed to be sa July3 ang start.
Then kanina, sa Company B..

how'd you know you got hired by company a? i think there's nothing to worry since you haven't signed any contract with them yet. but, i still hope you acted professional when you were asked by the person from company a. you don't have to lose your composure if you were only being asked which company you chose.
anyway, just let it pass. think of your new work at company b and prove to them that they made the right decision for hiring you.
good luck! :)

Well it's after the fact, but i do hope you treated company a's representatives with respect. What you did wasn't wrong... probably just not that proper.
But as was said, you didn't sign anything yet anyway, and i don't think company a will waste any more effort in trying to stop you from going to company b. I just hope you don't intend to renew your employment with company a in the future -- as you may have burned a bridge there depending on how you communicated the news you mentioned above.

yes i am already hired by Co.A, because during the final interview, the interviewer said "You're hired!" and asked me to report on July 3. but I didn't sign any contract.
I was about to call them yesterday to inform them about my decision, yun nga lang.. naunahan ako ng HR nila and sila yung tumawag saken. I think I was nice and respectful during the conversation. I also apologized. And sabi nya "Okay lang" then "Goodluck".
Napa-paranoid lang ako kasi I learned that they had a history of "panghaharang" sa isang employee nila nung nagtransfer sa ibang company. but then, that employee already worked for them for 3 months. ako hindi pa naman nag-start. first job ko kasi kaya napa-praning ako. baguhan pa lang ako sa ganitong mundo. :D :bop:

I dunno, IMHO you didn't do anything wrong at all. I mean, you liked B's offer, why stop yourself from getting it? You didn't sign any contract with A whatsover anyway.
Signing a contract is another matter though.
