My friend is taking it. Fine, she lost a lot of weight but she's been acting weird ever since she took it. Maybe it's the metamphetamines. Or maybe it's the valium to be taken at night to help her sleep.
:(

Not safe at all. It contains in its active ingredients, among others, ampethamine/metamphetamine derivatives (parang shabu). That's why you don't have an appetite when you take Bangkok pills.

i'd really stay away from these pills if i were you. everyone calls them bangkok pills, but my thai physician friends have never heard of them. at best, they contain herbal extracts that behave like amphetamines; at worst, they contain unknown amounts of the real thing.
again, they are marketed as supplements, and are not subject to close scrutiny by the FDA. indiscriminate use of any stimulant in the amphetamine class not only makes you lose weight, but also puts you at great risk for dependence and cardiac problems, or worse, death. several deaths in the US of people using stimulant herbal supplements for weight loss resulted in an FDA investigation. they found large amounts of mahuang in these pills, a stimulant extract which causes your heart to go into overdrive and your arteries to slam shut. from then on, mahuang has been banned from the US market.
so, there's really no such thing as a free lunch. best way to lose weight is still a combination of a sensible diet and exercise. let's see, on one hand we have fit and (relatively skinny), on the other, we have death. fit, dead; fit, dead; hmmm, i know which side I'd rather be on.
if you want to keep the weight off, the American Heart Association recommends aerobic exercise for 30 minutes three times a week. this can be as simple as taking a brisk walk with your friends or your dog around a park or a mall. for the mall rats out there, two or three circuits of the second level of megamall, for instance would be adequate. the AHA has a website for exercisers called justmove.org, and it's pretty neat. check it out and see if certain things work for you.
BadGiRL: no, the bangkok pills don't contain valium. valium contains valium. looks like your friend may be headed for a cycle that might end up absolutely nowhere. valium, taken regularly, also causes dependence, and completely messes up your sleep cycle. behavioral changes can happen to people that take valium or it's cousins on a regular basis, then quit abruptly for several days.
in any event, the pill du jour et nuit routine is something to be avoided like the plague. your friend might want to see a real doc (instead of us cyberdocs) to supervise the washout period, just to be on the safe side.

thx docs!
ok..here's what i got from taking those pills... been taking them for 2 weeks na and i think i better quit...but hey! i did lose weight..considering how desperate i am... :)
anyway...as doc grumpy said...it really did mess up my sleeping cycle...why else would i be awake from 1 am till 5 am (it's 3 am now. and im still AWAKE)...then i'd drop dead in bed from 7 pm till 1 am the following night...arrrghhh..can't take this anymore... weird sleeping cycle...and besides...i think my body can't take it anymore because i'm suddenly getting sick (ubo and stuff)...
am not really dependent on it.... and i'm not acting weird naman e...so i guess hindi masyado nag effect yung shabu or something na nakakaaffect ng behavior ng tao.... and besides....... so i guess i'd starve myself nalang again.... hey...anyone heard of ionamine? parang bangkok din sya but hindi sya addictive....shux..dami ko talagang alam na masama..tsk tsk... ;)
teka teka...any tips on how i can get back to my "original" sleeping cycle?

Ionamine (Phentermine resin) acts more or less the same way as Bangkok pills. It's a regulated drug --meaning, you can't get it without a doctor's prescription, and the only way a doctor will probably give you one is if you've really exhausted all possible means of losing weight and you're morbidly obese. But then again, even with that scenario most doctors wouldn't prescribe it. If you take it, you'll experience the same sleeplessness and "hyper" state, plus palpitations, rise in BP, dry mouth, tummy problems, etc., and I'm not even talking about overdosage symptoms here. Once the medication loses its effectiveness, you'll basically feel dead tired and sleepy.

BadGiRL, I meant.. my friend's bangkok pills included valium pills to help her sleep. I think the bangkok pills makes her stay awake, the metamphetamines I guess. :(

is it true that if you're taking Bangkok pills and you take the "drug test" (I dunno kung sa urine ba or blood), the result will be positive...
anybody know if this is true??
Also, while taking Bangkok pills, di rin daw pwede alcohol intake??

mga doc, tanong ko lang bakit pag nagpawis ako, parang malamig. kasi pag take ko nung bangkok, lunchtime. tapos mga 5pm ako jogging sa village namin. pag nagpawis ako hindi pa rin ako naiinitan, opposite nga eh parang giniginaw ako. tapos parang ang bilis ko mapagod, eh noon kaya ko mag 6 laps paikot sa village, ngayon wala pang 1 lap parang hinahabol ko na yung hininga ko. although nakakatulog naman ako at the normal time i sleep. kaya nga iyong 2 nightly pills di ko na tini-take eh (i assume they are downers). para sa akin rin parang last resort na ito. hope you can help answer my questions.
ang ginagawa ko nga pala to minimize the effects is drink lots of water, eat more veggies and fruits.

althea: Since bangkok pills have ampethamine derivatives, it causes a positive drug test. And as with any centrally-acting drug, mixing Bangkok pills with alcohol isn't adviseable.
celeb: Bangkok pills are stimulants, not downers, and one symptom of acute stimulant intoxication is sweating. Other effects include hyperactivity, increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, dilated pupils, confusion, disorientation. You are in a state of increased metabolism, that's why you feel that way. The subsequent tiredness is the drug wearing off.

You may either have: a) developed a tolerance for it already, or b) the drug's effect has worn off, causing rebound sleepiness.

kung safety ang pag-uusapan, puwede bang on-off ang pag-take ng mga appetite suppressants like ionamin? or phentermine? kunwari, 3 days take the drug, 4 days off. tapos ulit na naman. para di maipon sa system? posible ba yun?

No. I strongly discourage you from taking these types of pills. You don't store the drug until such time that a toxic level is reached; even one (or even half a) dose of these drugs are enough to give extremely bad side effects.

I have tried taking bangkok pills. Eto yung effects nya for me.
After yung pills for lunch, I feel so happy. Di ko maintindihan why I suddenly feel happy. I also noticed that I totally lost my appetite. I normally have a huge appetite and after taking it, hindi ako makakaiin. It does leave your mouth really dry so I try and force myself to take plenty of water. I don't know, pero I feel may diuretics din sya cuz I pee more than usual. But then again, it maybe because Im taking in more water.
The one for night time, the only problem is, I usually wake up in the morning with stomach pains. Sira yung tiyan ko every morning. I never had problems sleeping though.
The first week I was taking it, I had to stop kasi I had a flu. Since I wasn't eating anything, I think my immune system collapsed. I had to stop taking it while I was sick kasi takot ako to mix it with any other medication kahit na paracetamol lang.
I am fat and one of my concerns was its effects to my heart. Luckily, I didn't experience any palpitations or anything like that. My sister experienced numbness on her legs. I think its not the same gor everyone.
I can't believe Im saying this but bangkok pills really don't work for long term weight loss. That is, unless you take it continously which is a big no-no! You lose weight..true, you shed pounds fast...true! true! true! , pero once you stop, you gain back your appetite for food, thus you eat, thus you gain weight.

If you want something that works similar to bangkok pills but minus the methamphetamines, well I think ECA Stacks are okay. You can get them at GNC I think. Ephedrine/Caffeine/Aspirin.
The main problem is these are serious uppers. They really wake you up. And keep you that way. And yes, you get very hyper. So that would classify as WIERD sometimes.
And Doc, isn't Ephedrine dangerous?
Using ECA or Bangkok is just one way of achieving caloric deficit (by cranking up your metabolism). So either eat less or burn more. But burning more takes time, so you might as well just do that HEALTHILY! Screw the pills man.
And besides, being thin is not good for you. Specially women. IT'S NOT PRETTY!!!

Ephedrine is dangerous and is a strictly regulated substance.

 I read in a magazine that these Bangkok pills can actually kill you! Its generic name is Fenfluramine and it works in conjunction with a stimulant called Phentermine to suppress appetite.
Problem is, they've been banned over 3 years ago because the drug was found to eat away at the heart from within. This causes heart valve defects which could lead to death. I'm not joking - no doctor would prescribe it! :bop:

The slimming herbal teas contain senna, which is a laxative. It prevents you from absorbing food, including the electrolytes and nutrients that go with it. The result would be a bad case of diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance, which, if severe enough, can cause death.

Phen-Phen was banned in the USA because of terrible side effects pero napunta naman sa 3rd world countries - like Pinas where it is marketed as the Bangkok Pills...

I took it for ten months. Well, ok 8, coz I went off it during the summer vacation because I was afraid it would be detected in the physical and lab exam I was going to take for medical school entrance. Anyway, I lost mga 15 pounds lang, I think I developed a tolerance for it. This was from January to October 1999. Pero sobra yung side effects. Lagi ako happy, I was in euphoria kahit wala naman dahilan, lalo ako naging delusional, I couldnt concentrate, I actually did so bad in my studies partly because of this I think. As a result, I had to drop out of med school, and I did that late October tapos I stopped the pills, and all the weight I lost came back plus 20 more! Imagine! Taking the pills was my biggest mistake in life. Now when I remember that, feeling ko ang ***** ***** ko. I'm now in another med school and I guess my life is now back in order but I noticed na I have shorter attention span now and my memory's been greatly affected.
Those measly 15 pounds weren't worth it.
