It's not physically addicting, but psychologically, it is. Oftentimes, I believe the latter's worse. As for cannabis as a relief for cancer pains, I'm all for it.

Psychological addiction means you're hooked to the effect of marijuana, which includes euphoria, heightened sensitivity to exsternal stimuli, and splitting of consciousness (you're high, and you know it). Your body doesn't crave for it, but your mind does.

In some country pot is legal you can even buy it in a regular store.

I heard about the health benefits marijuana. Ancient medical texts prescribe it. Today, it helps cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Smoking marijuana before chemo helps patient not to feel terribly nauseated after the chemo. AIDS patients are helped by increasing their appetites, thus they are not really hit hard by the degenerative effects of AIDS. It also helps people with very poor appetite. Marijuana also helps insomnia in the elderly. Aged people place dried cannabis in a pouch under their pillow, the scent helps them sleep.

As for the psychological addiction, one has to control it. All things can induce psychological addiction including posting in the PEx :)
