Why do doctors specialize in certain fields?

There are so many fields to specialize in. What made you decide to take yours?

Interest first and opportunities present second.

Ditto. This is the only field I was very interested in; I was never interested in a non-surgical field. Also, choosing to remain a general practitioner in Metro Manila would be tantamount to taking a vow of poverty, because even for the most benign of illnesses like the flu, people still prefer to go to at least a specialist in internal medicine.
