Siyempre, knowledge of his field is a given na. What are you looking for in a doctor?

sincere.
there's a huge difference between a doctor who knows how a patient breathes and a doctor who feels what a patient breathes.

SYMPATHY.
Doctors should also feel what the patient undergoes: the pain, discomfort (even financially), etc. Doctors should also impart knowledge on their patients regarding their conditions because some patients even ask nurses and nursing students regarding their diagnosis.

Aside from the knowledge on their own field, should be able to establish a good rapport in order to gain the trust and the confidence of their patients.

Be able to tell me what's wrong in the simplest and most understandable terms. I like it direct without any sugar coating.

face value

honest and sincere doctors...yung type na kahit super bad news na nya, they'll still say it in your face na ganon..doctors na hindi nagpapa-asa like what my cousin's doctor did..as in! kaya sinusumpa sha ng buong angkan namin! :(
friendly ones, too...yung type na whenever you see them along the corridor, magsmi-smile back ren...hindi mahirap lapitan and kausapin...

.
Capable of administering lots of genuine TLC+C.
Tender Loving Care + Concern. Which is well-nigh impossible for immigrants (or Asians) like me to get here in America, especially if your doctor is a White Anglo-Saxophone! My German doc is good, but never have I seen him in a caring, loving, concerned mode. Next year, I'm changing him with... who else... but...eherm.... ;)

If superior knowledge in his/her field is a given, then the next important quality is humanism or being humane. I have seen a lot of doctors who think of themselves as gods just because they hold a stupid diploma.
Also, the patient should not idolize the doctor...they are only human beings too. We need to become an active participant in our own medical care, both preventive and curative. Don't be afraid to ask the doctor any question that concerns you. You are entitled to a straightforward answer as a patient who has entrusted his/her health or life to the doctor. If you are not satisfied then go to another doctor.

BadGirl: Bakit ganoon? Kaya tama yung sinabi noong mga doktor dito na di dapat gamutin ang sariling pamilya (unless it is an emergency siguro).
O, Ira, B/U, & other docs, what advice can you give someone in BG's situation?
In the same way that our elders nag us to death, Badgirl's situation most probably holds true, too: Kaya siya siguro tinatarayan kasi aunt siya, and she nags and lectures Badgirl when she sees her doing something unhealthy. In this case, she is aunt first, and doctor second. My advice? Just grin and bear it. :) I think that's the way she shows she cares. Blood, after all, is thicker than water.

To BadGirl,
Tama si Ira. As usual. Di ako nag-sisipsip. I should know 'cause I'm an uncle and whenever I "castigate" "scold" "berate" whateverate my nephews and nieces, it's a reprimand borne of love, not hate or maltreatment sumzing.

I would love to see doctors assigned in the emergency rooms who are very caring and even though they are very sleepy already, they still manage to show concern for the patient, not because he is fulfilling his job, but because he loves his job. Most of the time kasi, I get admitted to the emergency room, and the doctor assigned to me talks in a very monotonous voice that I would rather not tell him how I'm feeling, for reason that he may not be listening. Parang it's recorded. And yes, a smile definitely changes whatever pain I'm feeling.
I guess most of you have watched Patch Adams. I liked the film because I think there aren't much doctors like him. Maybe if all doctors would practice "excessive happiness", without worrying about anything, but thinking of what happiness he can give to his patient, either old or young, then maybe being admitted to the hospital wouldn't be a situation to be afraid of.
A sincere smile can really make a big difference. :)

Hi, Artemis,
Had you been in the North Shore Hospital in Forest Hills, you woulda get your wish. I entered that hosp last month when I thought I had an emergency condition sumzing, and a Pinoy doc attended to me... Name of Dr. Atienza... he's so kind and so capable and really got a lotta TLC+C. Funny thing was I thought at first he was merely an orderly, coz he didn't feel it below his stature as a physician to push my kama (iyong pang-emergency ba?) himself when the regular nurse aide whatever was not available.
May sense of humor pa ang damuho. Tanong, "Doktor, mamamatay kaya ako?" He said: Hindi pa ho ngayon, wag kayong mainip!" Hahaha! Pero idinagdag agad na aaabot siguro kayo ng 120 years old! Naku, amang, sabi ko naman: "Tumayo pa kaya ao sa ganong idad? O, no, ang ibig kong sabihin,
Ewan.

hi NEWYORKER363!
Nice experience you got there. I'm glad to hear that there are doctors who have grown old in their profession and still loving what they do.
Tingnan mo, nakuha mong mag-joke din di ba? And probably for a moment you weren't thinking of your plight, maybe even afterwards.
He made you sleep nga, but he had you wake up to some kind of a heaven. Ang galing. :)

I agree with fors5ak3n. Doctors shouldn't rush us and not view us as just another number and $$$. I'd like more doctors to ask their patients if they have anymore questions or concerns before they run off to the next patient.

accdg to my doctor friend in Kaiser, an HMO in the USA, they are under time-constraint and will only see a patient for 15minutes at the most.
as for the question:
my ideal doctor is someone who listens to the problem and will correctly diagnose me - without having to go and get a second opinion.

Medyo OC kasi when it comes on those things.

A doctor that does proper checks & tests before dishing out prescriptions.
A doctor that listens to his/her patients carefully and treats them with the upmost respect ......rich or poor.
A doctor that knows for sure that people don`t come into the surgery via a conveyor belt.
A doctor that genuinleycares about the people in his/her community.
