(CNN) -- Legendary R&B artist Luther Vandross, whosesmooth, silky voice gave soul to songs about life, love and relationships, died Friday. He was 54 years old.

The popular crooner suffered a debilitating stroke in April 2003. Even so, his album "Dance With My Father," co-written with Richard Marx, sold nearly a million copies in its first month of release that June. The following year, that album won three Grammy Awards, including song of the year.

His eighth and final Grammy came for best R&B performance by a duo -- the remake of "The Closer I Get to You," sung with Beyonce Knowles.

Vandross died at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey at 1:47 p.m. ET, surrounded by family, friends and a medical support team, a statement from the hospital said.

Alluding to the stroke, "which he never fully recovered from," hospital spokesman Rob Cavanaugh said, "Throughout his illness, Luther received excellent medical care and attention from his medical team. Luther was deeply touched by all the thoughts and wishes from his fans."

Vandross' songs and emotionally charged ballads carry a signature sound.During his four-decade career, Vandross sold more than 25 million copies, each one of his 14 albums achieving either platinum or multi-platinum status.

Luther Ronzoni Vandross was born into a New York City family steeped in the traditions of gospel and soul. He began his career writing and performing jingles for television commercials. He even appeared on "Sesame Street" in October 1969.

It was after a chance meeting with David Bowie at a recording studio in 1975 that Vandross was asked to sing backup on Bowie's hit album, "Young Americans."

Later, Vandross served as Bowie's opening act. Vandross also sang backup for Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand.

When record companies rejected him, Vandross used his own money to produce his 1981 debut album, "Never Too Much."

It went on to top the R&B charts and sold 2 million copies.

By the end of the 1980s Vandross had nearly two dozen smash singles, including "Give Me the Reason," "Stop to Love" and "There's Nothing Better Than Love," made with Gregory Hines. Arguably his most memorable hit was the 1989 classic, "Here and Now," which has become a wedding staple.

The momentum carried into the 1990s, with Vandross recording "The Best Things In Life Are Free," a pop duet with Janet Jackson that hit the Top 10 and No. 1 on the R&B charts.

He followed that in 1994 with "Endless Love," a duet with Mariah Carey that reached No. 2 on the pop charts.

"I was Luther from day one, from the day I began, and I think that's a very important thing," he once said. "I think that's what sustained my career for so long is that when I start, you know it's me."

Vandross struggled with health and image problems, claiming that he lost 100 pounds -- 13 times. He suffered from hypertension and diabetes, which killed two siblings and his father, but refused to slow down until his stroke two years ago.

Of "Dance With My Father," he once said that title song "was very emotional for me and, yes, it is based on my own experience.

"It's not just about losing one's father, but about missing someone who is gone -- for whatever reason -- and the longing you feel for that moment in the past when you were together," he said.

CPA ba tawag dyan,, dito kc CGA (certified general accountant) or CMA (certified managerial accountant).. i have to take accounting kc for my course on my first year it was a pre requisite, and on my second year that's the time i have to decide for my major.. talaga first choice ko marketing pro money wise i'll go for accounting.. i guess it's not for me.. i can't stand doing the same thing over and over again.. so picked marketing na i find really challenging.. yeah part of marketing is advertising but it's just a small portion.. marketing naman is all about decisions inside and outside of the company.. it's strategic planning of how are you going to market your product /service.. and you utilize the four Ps product. place, promotion, shoot i forgot the last P.. basta it's cool.. ako kc mahilig mag analyze, and i like strategies.. there's more to it na talagang interesting..

Way back when I wrote about ROMEO'S BLUE SKIES in issue 2.3, I mentioned that the venerable World Masterpiece Theater television series had come to an end. Instead, they had turned their attention to re-making their classics into films; the first such attempt is THE DOG OF FLANDERS.
Pioneer has chosen to release this under their Family Entertainment label rather than their anime label, which will probably make a lot of people very wary. However, this is primarily a film aimed at families—the goal of the World Masterpiece Theater Movies was to create films that parents who had grown up watching these shows could take their children too, after all. So it all makes sense. Just don't worry about the label and watch this movie.
It comes in two versions—dubbed and edited, and uncut with English subtitles. For the edited version, some of the slower parts have been edited out to make the movie more in line with American pacing. However, this review is of the subtitled version, which shows the entire film uncut from start to finish.
Nello is a young boy who dreams of being an artist. He lives with his grandfather and his dog, Patrasch. They are poor but content as they struggle to make a living by delivering milk to the local towns. But nothing stays the same, and soon Nello and Patrasch must struggle together for their very survival.
Since this is based on a classic Flemish novel by Ou'ida, Nello, Patrasch and Grandfather don't have an easy life. (Literary classics aren't happy stories, for the most part). But it is because of this that when they do experience happiness, it feels so much more real. The first time I saw this film was a couple years ago at an animation festival. The audience was composed entirely of adults, and at the end, as cliched as it sounds, there was not a dry eye in the house. The story is that powerful.
The animation, too, is beautiful and will immediately conjure comparisons to Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. The colors are rich and full, and the motion is smooth. The character designs may at first appear somewhat simplistic, but like Ghibli's works, that is part of their charm.
Certainly, although not as moving perhaps as GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, THE DOG OF FLANDERS is a warm, entertaining story about a boy and his dog, and what it means to truly care for someone and to have dreams.
Although anime fans may find this hard to believe, THE DOG OF FLANDERS is certainly one of the better anime titles available today. While it may not have the flash or style of some of the other more current "hits," it has story and a lot of heart. Pioneer deserves a lot of credit for making this title available to both anime fans and families in the United States. Don't expect the subtitled edition on DVD, though. Since the film was edited for the dub, a dual language DVD is impossible, and at this time Pioneer has no plans of doing a subtitled-only DVD.

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will step down any time now.

Thus declared yesterday

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel amid reports that most of President Arroyo's partymates and supporters have been showing their disappointment with her.

Pimentel said the sudden turnaround of most members of the majority bloc in the House of Representatives on the issue of playing the Arroyo-Garcillano tapes indicates that the ruling party knows it can not use numerical superiority to suppress the truth in the face of strong public sentiments against Arroyo.

"We see that many of the President's allies are already seeing the inevitable signs of the imminent departure of Gloria from the seat of power," Pimentel added.

Protesters from leftist and opposition groups march during a demonstration in the financial district of Makati, demanding the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on allegations that she cheated to win last year's elections. AFP photos

The Senate Minority leader stressed that her congressional allies' actions show that the President is losing her grip over them because of her increasingly indefensible situation.

Pimentel stated that the President's allies are aware that they risked public condemnation had they blocked the playing of the tapes which is of the highest public interest.

The solon noted that the integrity and credibility of the administration congressmen were also at stake.

"Of course, some of them were motivated by a more pragmatic tactic of preventing a walkout by those who did not agree with the position of the majority and who would make a big issue of what would be perceived as their desire to cover up the contents of the controversial tapes," Pimentel said.

However, Pimentel expressed apprehension that the administration congressmen would still take advantage of their voting strength to slam moves to impeach President Arroyo.

"The playing of the tapes is one thing. The President's impeachment is another. The two are far apart from each other," he said.

Pimentel stressed that the President must not use the issue of the First Gentleman Miguel Arroyo's departure as leverage.

The Senate leader said the resignation of the President will resolve crisis on her leadership caused by loss of her credibility and capability to govern the nation in the wake of the jueteng and wiretapping scandals.

Pimental assured that the First Gentleman's self-exile abroad is not permanent and that he can be summoned back to the country by Congress.

"The President can send her husband and even their children to the moon. It will not matter much. The important thing is for her to resign because it is she who is the whole cause of this problem," Pimentel said.

PALACE MAY POSTPONE E VAT

MALACAÑANG indicated a possible postponement of the implementation of the new expanded Value Added Tax (E-VAT) will be tackled in next week's joint LEDAC meeting between executive and legislative leaders.

However, this will depend on the outcome of the joint legislative-executive meeting in Malacañang next week as the Palace earlier declared the E-VAT will definitly push through.

This developed as Malacañang Palace warned unscrupulous businessmen and price manipulators of stiffer sanctions, specially those who will exploit the implementation of the new VAT reform law and jack up prices unreasonably.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye called on concerned citizens and consumer price watchers to closely monitor prices of basic commodities, including energy and power prices,

Bunye also urged concerned local government agencies to help out in monitoring prices of basic commodities and pushing for energy conservation among constituents. On the other hand, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla assured consumers that the impact of the 10 percent VAT is softened by several mitigating measures in place so that consumers will not feel the brunt of the added tax on oil and petroleum products. Lotilla said the increase in fuel prices will only be minimal, stressing that the impact will only be an average of about six percent and not 10 percent as projected by the finance department and the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

The Energy chief said for diesel, the impact of the 10 percent VAT is only equivalent to a 1.9 percent increase as the average cost of a liter of diesel commonly used by public transport would only be P29.50.

For kerosene, the increase resulting from VAT will only be about P1.73 per liter or 5.9 percent.

Lotilla said the impact of VAT is cushioned as the excise tax of P.60 per liter is removed and the reduction in the import duty, equivalent to P.50 per liter is taken out. The new retail prices will be around P31 per liter.

In the case of fuel, the VAT will result only to about P1.20 per liter increase while the price of regular unleaded gasoline will also rise by only around 6.8 percent or about P2 per liter.

The highest impact of VAT will be felt on unleaded gasoline to increase by an average of P2.80 per liter to bring present prices to about P33 per liter.

Meanwhile, the unpopular E-VAT came into force Friday and was expected to fuel protests called to demand President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo quit for allegedly rigging last year's vote.

The 10 percent value-added tax (VAT) pushed up fuel and electricity rates by as much as a tenth, with airline and shipping fares and toll road fees also jumping.

Congress decided to impose the VAT in May after a prolonged and acrimonious debate, with the tax intended to widen the cash-strapped government's revenue base and avert a potential debt default.

"We are exerting all efforts to mitigate the impact of VAT on consumer goods," Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said in a statement.

But Arroyo's foes expected the increases, which came as the peso is falling and crude oil prices are at record highs, to fuel protests called to demand her removal for alleged cheating in the May 2004 election.

The allegations were made after the opposition released an audio tape in which the President can purportedly be heard talking to a senior election official. The opposition says Arroyo was trying to fix a million-vote victory.

Congress aired the tapes on late night television Thursday. The unidentified voices suggest election officials had offered large blocs of votes to the highest bidder and that low-level officials were being threatened with abduction if they refused to cooperate in apparent vote-rigging operations.

INUPAKAN ng grupo ng mga Muslim na naka-base sa Parañaque City ang aktres na si Susan Roces kaugnay sa mga maanghang na batikos nito kay Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Ayon sa Filipino Muslim Democratic Alliance (FIMDA), hindi ang Pangulong Arroyo kundi si Ms. Roces ang arogante matapos niyang barahin at supalpalin ang mga mamamahayag na nag-interview sa kanya nang magsagawa ng press conference noong Miyerkules ng tanghali sa Club Filipino.

Sinabi ni Haji Wahab Sultan, pangulo ng FIMDA, sawang-sawa na sila sa pamumulitika ng mga artista at hindi na nila matatanggap na palagi na lamang inihahambing sa pelikula ang pagpapatakbo ng pamahalaan.

Binanggit ni Sultan na hindi malayong mahalintulad sa administrasyon ni dating pangulong Joseph Estrada ang pamahalaan kung muling mangingibabaw ang mga artista sa pelikula na mamuno sa gobyerno.

Dahil dito, inihayag ng naturang grupo ang buo nilang suporta sa administrasyon ni Pangulong Arroyo kasabay ng panawagan sa mamamayan na maging mahinahon at magkaisa upang matagumpay na maisulong ang reporma.

Reaksiyon

HATI ang mga kongresista sa naging pahayag ni dating Pangulong Corazon Aquino na maging maingat si actress Susan Roces sa mga puwersang nais na magpatalsik sa administrasyong Arroyo sa pamamagitan ng anumang paraan na kontra sa Konstitusyon.

Para kay Agusan del Sur Rep. Rodolfo Plaza, stalwart ng Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) na nasa hanay ng oposisyon, malinaw umanong 'bastardo' na ang Konstitusyon kaya dapat gumawa ng mga hakbang para pabagsakin ang pamahalaan kung hindi magbibitiw sina Pangulong Arroyo at Vice President Noli de Castro.

"We have the Constitution. Mukha namang bastardo na. Tila nakakahiya na. Kung kailangan sa anumang paraan ay okay na rin basta magkaroon lamang ng pagbabago. Hating-hati na ang bayan. Sana bumaba na si GMA para matahimik na ang bayan."

"Magkaroon dapat ng election sa president at vice-president," ani Plaza sa panayam ng Taliba.

Ngunit, kinontra ito ni Cavite Rep. Gilbert Remulla, kasapi ng Nacionalista Party (NP) at chair ng House committee on public information, nang sabihing dapat makinig si Susan sa panawagan ni dating Pangulong Aquino na irespeto ang Konstitusyon sa kabila ng naging pagsuporta at papuri sa naging hinaing nito.

The press conference of Susan Roces last Wednesday, June 29, was a historic occasion.

It is one of the climacterics that will be remembered as the nation plunges headlong into the troubles, the turmoils, and the tumults created by the conduct of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Susan's remarks easily overshadowed the contrived "exile" of Mike Arroyo in these times when one can control events even from the planet Pluto, given the state of telecommunications technology today.

In other words, Mike Arroyo's exile is not really an exile. He will still be as available as before to his friends because of the cellphone.

In other words, he can still call the shots.

His exile abroad could only be a palabas, just as so many things in the Gloria administration are just palabas.

And, not surprisingly, even Cory Aquino has been hoodwinked by Gloria's "I am sorry" television performance.

I am sorry for Cory. So old, and still so na%EFve. So experienced, and still so gullible. So hoodwinked, and still so kind.

What the public sees in Susan Roces is a person who can be trusted. And that's simply because as a person, she is trustworthy. That is her nature.

As for Gloria, I no longer wonder what her nature is. I think I have seen more than enough signs in her to come to a firm conclusion.

I have worked at close range — as a writer and some sort of aide or political sidekick — for some national leaders, like two leading presidentiables -- Ninoy Aquino and Monching Mitra.

I believe that Susan has the "it," the pluck, the mettle, the mysterious but identifiable gift endowed by the cosmic ether.

I remember Cory Aquino's statement when she ran for President. She said that her intention was only to bring a change in government, not to present any political, social or economic program.

But if or when such a change shall have already been done, it is only then when, she said, "We can talk business."

Susan may be in that same position today. The resignation of Gloria is the first or only intention. Then after Gloria shall have resigned, then Susan may now talk about governing or not governing.

And if Gloria does not resign, we shall see....

One clear role for her is simply to inspire the people with her presence, her commitment, and her support for the cause of change.

The next leader, whether it is Susan or not, could be the head only of a transition government — prior to a snap election or a Constitutional Convention and a new Constitution.

At this point, it looks like Susan is the most acceptable leader of a movement to persuade Gloria to crawl out of Malacañang.

It is obvious that Susan is the exact opposite of Gloria because Susan is not politically ambitious.

But if put on the spot, Susan would fight for what she believes — and in the way she believes.

For example, I do not think anyone or any group can use her for their own purposes now or in the future. I think she will decide, act and move according to her character and conscience.

I once saw her in a television interview. She was asked what she believed in.

She said she only wanted to live a simple life under the Ten Commandments. And quickly, she ad-ded, "And under the Golden Rule."

Remember, as "Da Queen" of so sensational a sector as the movie industry in the 1960s, she was untainted by the slightest whiff of infamy or scandal.

Hindi lamang ang mga regular stars nitong sina Comedy King Dolphy, Eric Quizon, Epy Quizon at Vandolph Quizon ang handog ng Quizon Avenue sa episode na ito, dahil special guest din ng show si Judy Ann Santos.

Pero hindi drama ang pakay ni Juday sa episode na ito, na tinituluhang Istir Wars: The Return of Juday, dahil todo spoof ng Star Wars ang Quizon Avenue ngayong linggo.

May segment kung saan si Juday si Princess Halaya at si Pidol ang kanyang kaibigang si OB123. Pagtitripan rin ng mga Quizon ang kasalukuyang kontrobersya sa jueteng at wiretapping.

Nabasa namin kahapon sa column ni Nel Alejandrino ang item tungkol sa bagong karelasyon ni Dayanara Torres. Out of curiosity, nag-research kami sa Internet tungkol kay Derek Jeter, ang sikat na baseball player at member ng New York Yankees.

Ipinanganak si Derek sa Pequannock, New Jersey noong June 26, 1974. Tumitimbang siya ng 195 lbs at may height na 6’3.

Hindi pa nakalagay sa Internet ang mga balita na si Derek ang naging kapalit ng Latino singer na si Marc Anthony sa puso ni Dayanara. Nauwi sa hiwalayan ang pagsasama nina Marc Anthony at Dayanara. Nagpakasal si Marc Anthony kay Jennifer Lopez pagkatapos nitong makipaghiwalay kay Ben Affleck.

Matagal na pinagtalunan sa Kongreso ang pagpapatugtog sa audio CD dahil pilit itong hinaharang ng mga kongresista na identified sa administrasyon. Resulta? Imbes na matuwa, nairita ang mga nagpunta sa Kongreso para pakinggan ang controversial taped conversation sa pagitan ni GMA at Garcillano.

Disappointed sila dahil garbled ang mga boses at pag-uusap. Ang sabi ng isang congressman, defective ang speakers ng CD player.

Dahil sa E-VAT, magsasara ang mga sinehan sa SM?

Napanood namin sa isang news program ang balita na mapipilitan ang management ng SM Cinema na isara ang kanilang mga sinehan kapag itinuloy ang plano na patungan ng E-VAT ang mga ticket.

Inamin ng spokeperson ng SM Cinema na magiging pabigat sa manonood ang balak na pagdadagdag ng E-VAT dahil hindi na ito makatarungan. Wala na raw manonood ng sine kaya mapipilitan sila na isara ang mga sinehan ng SM malls.

Naiintindihan namin ang punto ng SM Cinema management. Wala na sa lugar ang mga VAT na ipinapataw sa mga tao. The other night, umuwi kami ng Laguna at nagulat kami nang malaman namin na may VAT na rin ang toll gate fee.

Walang kalaban-laban ang ating mga kababayan dahil paano sila makakaluwas ng Maynila kung hindi sila magbabayad ng toll gate fee? Literal na highway robbery?

Ini-report ng Us Weekly na nagpakasal ang 32 y/o na si Ben at 33 y/o na si Jennifer noong Miyerkules sa Parrot Cay resort na nasa Caribbean islands ng Turks and Caicos.

Ito ang unang pagpapakasal ni Ben, at pangalawa para kay Jennifer (na nakipagdiborsyo sa aktor na si Scott Foley noong Marso 2004 pagkatapos ang 3½ taon ng pagiging mag-asawa).

Nagtambal sina Ben at Jennifer sa pelikulang Daredevil (2003), pero noong nakaraang taon lang sila nagsimulang mag-date.

"He’s really a gentleman," pahayag ni Jennifer sa AP Radio matapos niyang gawin ang Daredevil.

"And he’s not afraid to laugh at himself or you. And I knew, I just had an instinct that he would take care of me in my first step out there, and he did."
