Our Lady of Perpetual Succour
(Or OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP.)

The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is painted on wood, with background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion. Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel respectively. It was brought to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, who, dying there, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration. It was exposed in the church of San Matteo, Via Merulana, between St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. Crowds flocked to this church, and for nearly three hundred years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. The picture was then popularly called the Madonna di San Matteo. The church was served for a time by the Hermits of St. Augustine, who had sheltered their Irish brethren in their distress. These Augustinians were still in charge when the French invaded Rome (1812) and destroyed the church. The picture disappeared; it remained hidden and neglected for over forty years, but a series of providential circumstances between 1863 and 1865 led to its discovery in an oratory of the Augustinian Fathers at Santa Maria in Posterula.

The pope, Pius IX, who as a boy had prayed before the picture in San Matteo, became interested in the discovery and in a letter dated 11 Dec., 1865 to Father General Mauron, C.SS.R., ordered that Our Lady of Perpetual Succour should be again publicly venerated in Via Merulana, and this time at the new church of St. Alphonsus. The ruins of San Matteo were in the grounds of the Redemptorist Convent. This was but the first favour of the Holy Father towards the picture. He approved of the solemn translation of the picture (26 April, 1866), and its coronation by the Vatican Chapter (23 June, 1867). He fixed the feast as duplex secundae classis, on the Sunday before the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and by a decree dated May, 1876, approved of a special office and Mass for the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. This favour later on was also granted to others. Learning that the devotion to Our Lady under this title had spread far and wide, Pius IX raised a confraternity of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St. Alphonsus, which had been erected in Rome, to the rank of an arch-confraternity and enriched it with many privileges and indulgences. He was amongst the first to visit the picture in its new home, and his name is the first in the register of the arch-confraternity. Two thousand three hundred facsimiles of the Holy Picture have been sent from St. Alphonsus's church in Rome to every part of the world. At the present day not only altars, but churches and dioceses (e.g. in England, Leeds and Middlesborough; in the United States, Savannah) are dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. In some places, as in the United States, the title has been translated Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

'Milan' stars win Famas best actor plums

Claudine Barretto and Piolo Pascual, stars of "Milan," on Sunday night took home the best actress and best actor awards from the FAMAS.

Barretto, who earlier won the best actress plum from the Luna Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines, dedicated her award to fiancé Raymart Santiago and daughter Sabina.

"Milan" is a story about the travails of migrant workers in Italy.

The Famas best picture award went to "Naglalayag," a May-December romance, which stars Nora Aunor and Yul Servo.

Aunor is a hall of famer in the best actress category.

Aleck Bovick, who played the role of Servo's girlfriend in "Naglalayag," won best supporting actress.

Dennis Trillo bagged the best supporting actor plum for playing a gay lover of a Japanese soldier in a World War II movie.

The awards night held at PICC in Pasay City was dedicated to the families that have become part of the entertainment industry.

Among those who attended the occasion were Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong of the de Leon family; Eddie Gutierrez and his wife Annabelle Rama and Tonton Gutierrez of the Gutierrez family; Geoffrey Eigenmann, Gabby Eigenmann of the Eigenmann family; and Tirso Cruz, Sheryl Cruz, Geneva Cruz of the Cruz family. Comedy king Dolphy Quizon and his sons represent the Quizon family.

Famas also honored veteran singer Pilita Corrales and Lea Salonga.

Work stops. Meetings are adjourned. Staff and top honchos alike rush home to watch “Pangako sa Yo” (The Promise), “Sana’y Wala nang Wakas” (Timeless) and other ABS-CBN teleseryes. They are so hooked they do not dare miss a single episode. And this phenomenon is happening not in the Philippines—but across Asia, especially in Malaysia, Europe, and Africa, where various ABS-CBN series are being shown.

WHO WOULD have thought? In the predominantly W.A.S.P. Unite States of America, Forbes Magazine has found that the most powerful and prosperous celebrity last year was-Oprah Winfrey!

Oprah beat show biz titans like Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. That's no mean feat! Her achievement is deemed even more remarkable because she represents two heretofore disadvantaged groups in the entertainment world -women and blacks.

Traditionally, and all too sadly, female stars have tended to be paid less than male superstars, especially in the action and adventure film types, from which many of the big blockbusters emerge. So, the fact that TV host-producer and occasional film talent-producer Oprah is a billionaire is nothing short of amazing.

Cavalier treatment

As for the black factor, Hollywood has been notorious for its cavalier treatment of African-American talents for many decades. Even at this time, when Denzel Washington and Will Smith command hefty talent fees, the rise to the top in Hollywood is still a bumpy ride for most black entertainers.

So, what has enabled Oprah to demolish the competition, as well as all preconceived notions about just how far a black female talent can go?

Instructively, Oprah began her TV career like most everybody else, playing it safe and observing the limits imposed on newcomers like her in the profession.

Later, however, she experienced an epiphany on the true power of the television medium, and how it could transform, inspire and empower viewers to become better people. Oprah acted on that new realization, and determinedly started using her show for good, rather than just for popularity and ratings.

Some of her TV colleagues warned the "suicidal" host-producer that her noble intention could write finis to her career. But she decided to act on her best instincts, anyway-and the result surprised everyone, perhaps including even herself: Oprah's refocused and reinvigorated talk show zoomed to the top!

Even when other talk-show hosts like Jerry Springer came up with sleazy episodes that appealed to viewers' worst proclivities, Oprah's show held its own, quickly developing a loyal viewership made up of people who wanted to become the best they could possibly be.

Six lessons

Yes, the show's viewership is still predominantly female, and it still goes in for fashion, home decor and makeover topics-but it now does much more than that, inspiring viewers to think not only of themselves, but also of others.

Amazingly, even as Oprah dared to be different, her show did even better financially, giving her the capital to produce some movies and publish her own monthly magazine. And now, she's been officially hailed by Forbes magazine as the "queen" of US show biz.

We trust that the lessons taught by Oprah's success story are eminently clear:

One, think of other people rather than just yourself, and you won't go wrong. Even better, the universe will reward you for your selflessness.

Two, act on your best instincts, and don't get sidetracked by doubts and fears.

Third, do what you do best, and do it to the utmost of your abilities.

Fourth, make yourself an instrument for good.

Fifth, don't do what everybody else is doing. Even better, don't get sucked down to other people's levels.

Sixth, know your audience and market, and what it really wants. In Oprah's case, she knew that the viewers perceived as lazy and stupid couch potatoes really wanted to become better people-and she dared to show them how!

I think the traditional prototype of the Filipino father has changed. Watching young fathers Paolo Paraiso and Julius Babao taking care of their babies is totally refreshing and awesome.

"My life has changed," quipped Paolo, whose son, Tomas Miguel, is his carbon copy. He and Mylene are partners in taking care of the baby. He has learned how to change diapers, feed the baby even bathe Tomas Miguel.

Before, Julius didn’t understand why fatherhood was such a big deal but when Antonia was born, he clearly saw the point of how people are changed by the birth of their children. Julius is very involved in Antonia’s life. After work, he goes straight home to be with his baby. He bonds with Antonia — plays with her, rocks or rather, with his strong arms swings Antonia to sleep. He also knows how to make her burp.

Of course, there’s Tintin Bersola, who is as doting as he is. Tintin takes photos of her baby’s activities and like a meticulous historian, records important moments of Antonia’s life. By the time she turns 18, Tintin would need a building as big as the Post Office in Liwasang Bonifacio to store Antonia’s photo albums.

On Homeboy, during Paolo’s guesting with Tomas Miguel, Mommy Mylene was the official videographer. Mylene remains one of the classiest women in showbiz — even with the extra pounds she gained with her pregnancy.

Gone are those days when baby care was assigned to mothers. And macho dads were supposed to earn money for milk and diapers and the needs of the baby and the family.

Times have changed. Today, you have dads like Paolo and Julius who are hands-on. They work, they bathe and change the diapers of their babies without losing their machismo.

And I’m sure Tomas Miguel and Antonia will be better human beings because they have wonderful loving fathers. And doting moms, too.

Nakunang nakasimangot si Kuya Germs sa camera habang nagbibigay ng German Moreno Youth Achievement Award kay Dennis Trillo sa FAMAS Awards Night last Sunday. Inakala ng marami na galit ang veteran TV host kay Angel Locsin dahil hindi ito nakasipot para tanggapin ang tropeo. Dalawa kasi sila ng said actor na nanalo ng nasabing special award.

Pero hindi naman pala galit si Kuya Germs dahil may komunikasyon sila ni Angel at alam daw nitong nasa shooting ng "I Will Always Love You" ang young actress although nangako ito na pipiliting humabol.

In fairness, pinilit naman talaga ni Angel na makarating pero 9:30 na natapos ang shooting. Papunta na siya ng PICC nang malaman niyang tapos na ring ibigay ang second award na Mr. & Ms FAMAS Popularity kung saan ay sila naman ni Richard Gutierrez ang napili.

na ibinigay sa kanya ay pinuntahan at nakipagkita naman si Angel sa veteran TV host after the awards night at masaya silang nag-dinner kasama ang co-winner na si Dennis.

Palibhasa ay hindi nakakapanood ng TV sa sobrang ka-busy-han, wala palang kamalay-malay si Jennylyn Mercado na umamin na ang isang sexy star na si Alwina M. sa "ETK" na may relasyon ito sa boyfriend niyang si Mark Herras.

Hindi namin alam kung ipinaalam na sa kanya ng mga taong nakapaligid o kung nabasa na niya sa mga tabloid by now basta ang alam namin, tiyak na pagmumulan na naman ito ng kanilang away.

Ka-kaibang paraan ang ginawa ng aliens para sakupin ang mundo. Hindi galing sa outer space ang pag-atake nila, but mula sa kailaliman ng lupa na lalong ikinasindak ng mga tao.

THE rumored massive revamp over at ABS-CBN is now taking effect.

Clearly, they have been alarmed by the great edge that its rival station, GMA-7, has been enjoying.

But there are other questions that have been raised. Like, is it true that Korina Sanchez is soon resigning to head another network? Is it true ABS-CBN has gotten back the services of former president and COO Freddie Garcia?

As per Korina, they have yet to confirm nor deny this. But regarding Freddie Garcia, they've sent an official statement, to wit:

ABS CBN management has retained the services of its former president and COO, Freddie M. Garcia only as a senior management consultant since his retirement in December 2003 up to the present. The network consults Mr. Garcia occasionally in certain areas of its operations where his experience and input

can shed light on issues. However, Mr. Garcia is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of the operations of ABS-CBN, which is now under the leadership of its new president and COO, Luis F. Alejandro.

So there.

And what we see here are contrasting situations.

Veteran news and current affairs talents and personnel of ABS-CBN have been reportedly "forced to
retire" as part of the company's cost-cutting measures. But another reported reason for their apparent removal was that ABS-CBN decided to seriously rebuild its news organization to earn credibility and integrity. This was probably the reason why, except for David Jude Sta. Ana, former GMA News and Public Affairs personalities who were pirated by ABS-CBN some years ago, were asked to stay on.

If ABS-CBN wants to earn credibility, it should observe how things are done over at GMA News and Public Affairs. Known for its responsibility and credibility, GMA News and Public Affairs is also the only Philippine broadcast news organization with an Ethics and Editorial Manual, which its personnel strictly adhere to.

While ABS-CBN reportedly offered a retirement package of three months for every year of service, that cannot compare with the job security and compensation currently being enjoyed by GMA Network employees.

Last year, GMA-7 people were said to have received 4 months of bonus on top of the required 13th month pay. This year, it looks like GMA employees will receive more.

Heads are rolling over ABS-CBN while in contrast, more job vacancies are opening up at GMA-7 with the latter's expansion projects now in full blast.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- There's been a second shark attack off Florida's Panhandle where a teen-aged boy has been attacked and critically injured by a shark today.

The attack came just two days after a 14-year-old Louisiana girl died from a bite to the leg from a shark.

The boy has been airlifted to a hospital.

Today's attack took place near Cape San Blas, a narrow spit of land in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles southwest of Tallahassee.

THE rumored massive revamp over at ABS-CBN is now taking effect.

Clearly, they have been alarmed by the great edge that its rival station, GMA-7, has been enjoying.

But there are other questions that have been raised. Like, is it true that Korina Sanchez is soon resigning to head another network? Is it true ABS-CBN has gotten back the services of former president and COO Freddie Garcia?

As per Korina, they have yet to confirm nor deny this. But regarding Freddie Garcia, they've sent an official statement, to wit:

ABS CBN management has retained the services of its former president and COO, Freddie M. Garcia only as a senior management consultant since his retirement in December 2003 up to the present. The network consults Mr. Garcia occasionally in certain areas of its operations where his experience and input

can shed light on issues. However, Mr. Garcia is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of the operations of ABS-CBN, which is now under the leadership of its new president and COO, Luis F. Alejandro.

So there.

And what we see here are contrasting situations.

Veteran news and current affairs talents and personnel of ABS-CBN have been reportedly "forced to
retire" as part of the company's cost-cutting measures. But another reported reason for their apparent removal was that ABS-CBN decided to seriously rebuild its news organization to earn credibility and integrity. This was probably the reason why, except for David Jude Sta. Ana, former GMA News and Public Affairs personalities who were pirated by ABS-CBN some years ago, were asked to stay on.

If ABS-CBN wants to earn credibility, it should observe how things are done over at GMA News and Public Affairs. Known for its responsibility and credibility, GMA News and Public Affairs is also the only Philippine broadcast news organization with an Ethics and Editorial Manual, which its personnel strictly adhere to.

While ABS-CBN reportedly offered a retirement package of three months for every year of service, that cannot compare with the job security and compensation currently being enjoyed by GMA Network employees.

Last year, GMA-7 people were said to have received 4 months of bonus on top of the required 13th month pay. This year, it looks like GMA employees will receive more.

Heads are rolling over ABS-CBN while in contrast, more job vacancies are opening up at GMA-7 with the latter's expansion projects now in full blast.

Two concerts topbilling Filipino artists were held simultaneously in
San

Diego, California, on June 17, that of Sharon Cuneta at the Pala
Casino &

Resort and that of the Champions (Sarah Geronimo, Mark Bautista,
Rachelle Ann

Go, Christian Bautista, Frenchie Dy, Raymond Manalo and Sheryn
Regis) at the

San Diego Civic Center.

Here are excerpts from a report by Funfare's San Diego correspondent
Joann

Portacio (who used to be the assistant entertainment editor of
Malaya before

she migrated to the US):

Thunderous screams filled the theater when Sharon opened up her Mega
Tour

2005 with the all-time favorite Mr. DJ. Some of the people in the
audience

were not able to hold back tears because of the memories this song
elicited

in them. It was followed by a Tagalog medley that everybody enjoyed,
having

missed home for sometime now. The audience had a good laugh when the
megastar

kidded about her weight, "Yes, po, the baby came out. The fat
didn't." She

continued, "At least kapag may nagsabi sa aking mataba ako, pag
payat ko cute

pa rin ako."

Then Sharon pointed to the ninth floor suite above the Starlight
Theater

where the "reason" for her additional poundage was – the very
charming and

bubbly eight-month-old Miel was watching her Mommy Shawie. Also with
her was

four-year-old Ate Frankie. (Sharon's husband, Sen. Francis
Pangilinan, had

flown back to Manila for a Senate session but came back later for
the Los

Angeles show). Pala has a strict no-under 21 admittance policy
because it is

a casino resort so the two little girls watched mommy from above, in
the

comfort of their suite.

Sharon's rendition of Ako Ay Pilipino was well-applauded even by
foreigners

who watched the show with their Pinoy friends. But her medley of
songs about

the men who in one way or another got involved with her (either at
work or in

her lovelife) was a big hit. She also made the audience very happy
with such

hits as Kahit Wala Ka Na, Sinasamba Kita, Walang Hanggan, Kung
Mahawi Man Ang

Ulap, Tubig at Langis, Ikaw and Bituing Walang Ningning.

Listening to Sharon share these songs live surely made the night
complete for

her ever loyal fans even though some of them were actually going
back home

right after the show, which would mean a 45-minute to an hour's
drive for

some (almost equivalent to a Manila to Baguio trip). A lucky few
opted to pay

for a $200 (P10,800) deluxe room in the casino in order to hang
around after

the show, hoping to get a picture or an autograph from Sharon. As
always,

Sharon didn't disappoint her devoted fans.

Guest performer Robert Seña gave the audience a taste of the theater
when he

did an Andrew Lloyd Weber medley of Phantom Of the Opera and All I
Ask Of

You. He received thunderous applause.

The other guest performer, Ogie Alcasid, brought the house down with
his

Bubble Gang antics. His "Smile No. 1" (ala-Aga Muhlach smile and
pose) act

made Sharon's dear mom, Elaine Cuneta, (who attended all of her
daughter's

shows) laugh endlessly. "Mommy," Ogie said, "ok lang kayo?
Panglimang show na

ho natin ito, tumatawa pa rin kayo." Ogie also made the people
groove on

their feet with his medley of English and Tagalog dance songs. * * *
And here's a report by Al Chu (of Anaheim, California, producer of
the

Champions concert which was also mounted in L.A. on May 21):

The San Diego concert of the Champions was a huge, huge success in
terms of

attendance (full house), production values and audience reception.
The show

had to be extended by an hour to accommodate encore numbers and
requests for

autograph-signing and picture-taking.

"The show of shows." That's how the audience and the press described
The

Return of the Champions. It was the last engagement of the Champions
in the

US Mainland (East Coast and West Coast) and the performers gave it
all to the

delight of the audience which gave them a prolonged standing
ovation.

"I want to give credit to my line producer, Nanshi Ignacio, for
working very

hard to make the San Diego concert a smashing success," said
Al. "This trip

home is also a graduation gift to my son Albert who finished high
school this

year."

The Chus are arriving from L.A. tomorrow and will fly to Tacloban
City to

attend the fiesta there on June 30.

The 53rd FAMAS Awards: A family affair

The timing was right. It was Sunday, family day. Eight star-studded
clans

trooped to PICC for the FAMAS Awards and gave fans a crash course on
showbiz

history. It was nostalgia time again for more senior fans and
screams galore

for their younger counterparts.

The spotlight focused on showbiz clans: the Revillas, the De Leons,
the

Cruzes, the Eigenmanns, the Gutierrezes, the Fernandezes, the
Estradas and

the Quizons. It was all for one and one for all, proving once more
that in

showbiz, as in other aspects of life, the love for the craft is
passed on

from one generation to the next.

As Christopher de Leon said at the PICC awards rites, it was showbiz
that put

food on the family table. And it is also showbiz that he chose as a

profession.

The showbiz clans also proved that talent does run in the blood.
Each clan

boasts of several acting awardees.

Sa mga presscon ay pinag-uusapan pa rin ang paglapastangan umano sa
puwet ni

Ian Valdez.

Mas marami ang nagdududa na gimik na naman niya ito, pero parang
sobra naman

na saktan ang sariling katawan para mapag-usapan lang.

Nakausap namin si Ian bago siya lumabas ng ospital at nagduda na rin
kami

kung totoo ba ang kuwento niya.

Totoong nakita siyang nakahandusay na lang sa may kalye sa
Commonwealth at

napatunayan ni Ian sa medico-legal na merong pumasok sa puwetan
niya. May

Ngunit may inconsistensies sa mga pahayag ni Ian. Nag-text daw ang

sa kanya kaya inabangan daw niya ito sa labas ng bar ni Coco Simmo.

Ang sabi ni Ian, matagal na niyang kaibigan iyun pero hindi niya
alam kung

nasaan na ito.

Ibig sabihin, kilala niya ang nanghalay… nguni't wala siyang masabi
kung sino

ang may kagagawan.

Base sa aming panayam kay Ian, mukhang hindi na siya interesado kung
sino ang

may kagagawan at wala siyang balak na maghabol.

Hindi kaya malaman pa natin ang katotohanan sa insidenteng ito kapag
nahuli

ang may kagagawan nito?

Ang mahalaga yata kay Ian, muli siyang napag-usapan. Kung sa anong
dahilan,

ayoko nang alamin pa.

Ano nga ba ang totoo, Ian? Madali kasing malusutan ang mga di
pagkakatugma ng

kanyang kuwento dahil wala na kuno siyang maalala

makaabante ang mga shows.

"Tingnan mo naman ang mga shows namin, ang mga artista halos pare-

lang. Kahit walang talent basta malakas ang kapit sa mga junior
executives,

visible sa mga shows namin. Kahit nga hindi nagri-rate ang show wala
silang

pakialam basta paborito nila ang artista," emote ng insider mismo ng
Dos.

"Sana nga maging seryoso ang management sa paglilinis para naman
maka-recover

na kami," he added.

Looks like hindi lang isa, dalawa o tatlo ang nakakaramdam sa
nangyayari sa

ABS-CBN. Mismong ang mga empleyadong supposedly ay nagmamalasakit sa
kumpanya

ang nanamantala ayon sa source.

"Huwag na tayong mag-name names dahil alam n'yo ng lahat `yan. Iilan
lang

silang gumagawa niyan. Sana nga sila na ang susunod na magre-retiro.
Tutal

naman ang tagal na rin nilang namamayagpag diyan. Malaki na ang
naipon nilang

pera, yumaman na sila diyan. Pag binayaran pa sila, mas lalo silang
yayaman,"

pobreng artista, walang nangyayari sa career," sabi pa nito.

Parang may punto nga siya.

Well, kung ganito na ang sitwasyon nila, dapat na talagang maglinis
ng

bakuran ang ABS-CBN bago mahuli ang lahat. Baka magising na lang
sila isang

araw na wala na ang mga pinaghirapan nila kung hindi pa sila kikilos
ngayon.
