Major reorganization inside ABS-CBN network

There is a major reorganization being effected inside the ABS-CBN
network.

A highly-placed source who requested anonymity, revealed to Manila
Bulletin

that key officers in the network as well as the rank and file
employes,

specifically in the sales department of ABS-CBN, have been offered
retirement

packages with handsome monetary benefits since two days ago.

It was revealed that the major shake-up is in line with the
network's active

decision to streamline the network's workforce.

"The management is looking at ideally cutting the number of
employees into

half. As a result, there is widespread feeling of instability among
the rank

and file," the source added.

The source said that the plan is to assign those who will remain in
service to

the different departments where their potential can very well be
maximized.

A source inside the ABS-CBN network said "the retirement package is
yet to be

launched. But it is true that it will be offered to officers and
members of

the rank and file who have been with the company for more than 10
years."

The same source said the retirement package will probably be offered
starting

next month.

The reported reorganization came in the wake of reports that ABS-CBN
former

president and CEO Freddie Garcia has returned to ABS-CBN top
management. It

was said that he was effecting "radical changes" on the structural
development

and programming strategy of the network.

Reports have it that it was Garcia's brainchild to air replays of
the

successful "Meteor Garden" series on weeknights, and to change the
anchors of

the late night newscast "The Insider" from Erwin Tulfo and
Bernadette Sembrano

to Dong Puno and Ces Drilon.

"TV Patrol" continues to be anchored by Ted Failon, Julius Babao and
Karen

Davila, despite alleged recommendation by Garcia to bring back
Korina Sanchez

to the daily evening newscast.

Maloli Espinosa-Manalastas, ABS-CBN's vice president for government,
corporate

affairs and public relations, said "FMG (referring to Freddie M.
Garcia) never

left the network. He had been our consultant since the time that he
retired in

2003. But, of course, when you retire you have to enjoy it with your
family

Manalastas also clarified reports that all the changes being
observed now in

ABS are FMG's ideas. She said, "I think he had a hand in `Meteor
Garden' pero

The lady executive also expressed optimism about the current changes
being

done in the network. "We are happy. Paunti-unti, nakakabawi na kami.

deny the fact that we have a more aggressive competitor. Pero slowly
we're

getting back the confidence of our viewers again," she said.

Under FMG's control and supervision, ABS-CBN became No. 1 after
Eugenio Lopez

Sr. (father of Gabby Lopez) revived ABS-CBN after the People Power
revolution

in 1986. It reigned supreme for 18 years until GMA-7 beat them to
take over

the No. 1 position starting last quarter of 2003.

ABS didn’t question Sharon about her song on GMA-7



The intrigue never stops.


Bracing herself for work on her new studio album under Sony-BMG Music Entertainment soon after she has returned to the country last week from a very successful US tour, the megastar Sharon Cuneta finds herself answering another bit of controversy. This time, the issue stems from her song "Sa Kanya" which is being used as the theme song of GMA- 7’s next big Korea novela entitled "Attic Cat."

An item has come out in a different publication that ABS- CBN asked Sharon to explain why she allowed her song to be used by the rival network. Sharon has been under the stable of ABS-CBN talents for quite a long time now.

The megastar, finding the intrigue laughable, has denied these allegations. She said her mother network ABS-CBN has not done anything remotely close to it at all. She assured, "it is not true at all. No such thing. If there is, I’ll surely inform you," she said in a text message brushing aside another intrigue that could very well be traced to fuel the eternally raging network war.

Sharon’s singing the theme song of the GMA-7 Koreanovela has naturally aroused the curiosity of industry observers prompting them to think that maybe, Sharon may actually be transferring networks after all. Sharon has found this even funnier. "They’re imagining things," she said laughing.

The song in question is Sharon’s very own interpretation of an Ogie Alcasid original, "Sa Kanya" which is part of the new album billed "Sharon Sings Alcasid" that Sony-BMG is currently promoting. Sales of this new album, we were told, is fast picking up even when the megastar has yet to go on a full blast promotional campaign for it.

Sony-BMG’s Narciso Chan, for his part, said "we presented the idea of having Sharon’s single ‘Sa Kanya’ for this Korea-novela to GMA-7 and they liked it because it suits the flavor of the show. Sharon has given us her permission to do so and we have secured the rights from the publisher of the song. We have taken cared of the legalities involved in this negotiation so everything is in place. We don’t see anything wrong with it at all."

The megastar’s new album, "Sharon Sings Alcasid" is a compilation of Ogie Alcasid’s well-loved songs which also includes "Sana," "Ikaw Ang Pag-ibig," "Hanggang Ngayon," "Nandito Ako," "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang," "Ikaw Sana," "Pangarap Kong Ibigin Ka," "Kung Mawawala Ka," "Dito sa Puso Ko," "Mahal Kita, Walang Iba," "Tanging Ikaw Lamang," "Pangako" and "Nandito Ako."

In reaction to an earlier story about the current role of retired ABS-CBN president Freddie M. Garcia inside the network, the office of Maloli Manalastas of ABS-CBN’s corporate affairs department has sent us the following statement:

ABS-CBN management has retained the services of its former President and COO, Freddie M. Garcia only as a senior management consultant since his retirement in December 2003 up to the present.

The network consults Mr. Garcia occasionally in certain areas of its operations where his experience and input can shed light on issues. However, Mr. Garcia is no longer involved in the day-to-day running of the operations of ABS-CBN, which is now under the leadership of its new President and COO, Luis F. Alejandro.

So there. We wonder whether this statement would put a stop to all speculations.

Hero’s brother on the warpath again

Hero Angeles’ brother lets out another barrage of accusations against ABS-CBN, specifically against Star Magic, the management office co-handling with him the young actor’s showbiz career.


The feisty Henry Angeles (who filed, along with Hero, 27 counts of libel suits against TV host and columnist Cristy Fermin three weeks ago), alleged that his brother is currently experiencing "a career blackout" after Star Magic started to cancel all Hero’s guestings and personal appearances in various previously arranged engagements.

Henry spoke to the Manila Bulletin and accused ABS-CBN of indefinitely suspending Hero, despite being under an exclusive contract with them until year 2007. He said, "Hero has been barred from any show on ABS-CBN and we don’t know why. His fan text has been blocked by the cell network. My brother can’t make an appearance on ‘The Buzz’ and he wasn’t allowed to guest in ‘Y Speak’ last June 19. He was even barred from appearing at the Famas Awards last Sunday where he was supposed to be a presenter. His guesting in the show ‘Night of the Champions’ in Australia was also cancelled. He seems to be suspended but there is no memo," Henry said.

To support his claims, Henry furnished Bulletin a copy of Hero’s supposed schedules from June to July, including plans for SCQ’s first year anniversary, a new teleserye, and Hero’s first US visit. Henry revealed that Hero was told in a meeting that these projects will not materialize unless Hero fulfills certain conditions set by ABS-CBN management. "They told him he may resume work if Hero personally apologizes to Cristy Fermin, Johnny Manahan and Star Cinema. That I and the whole Angeles family will stay away from the picture, and no lawyers should be present during transactions."

An indignant Henry said that they found these conditions impossible." It prompted Hero to respond, ‘let me and my brother be’ in effect denying the unspoken request of the management to hire a new manager. Hero decides and he wants me to stay as his manager," he said speaking in behalf of the Angeles family, who, Henry said have banded together to show all-out support for their celebrity son.

ABS-CBN, for its part, has previously released a statement saying that all these changes are due to the ongoing reformatting of the network programming. The statement also quoted ABS-CBN executive Deo Edrinal that Hero can still be part of the regular pool of eight SCQ artists on a rotating basis. Henry, once again, denied this statement and said. "Hero informed me that the show has already started without him. He was told he can be accommodated only, not to be taken in as a regular. Hero is losing shows and we are kept in the dark. We don’t know what’s happening," he said.

Earlier, Hero reportedly lost two shows: "SCQ Reload" and "ASAP Fanatic." Henry said Hero is also bound to be taken out of "Nginiiig" after his stint ended last June 25. The older brother believes that all of these has a connection to the lawsuit that they filed against Fermin.

Cristy Fermin, reacting to this observation said, "I am not part of the management. I don’t have any influence on them. I cannot speak for them. I have no say. I’m only an ordinary employee. ABS-CBN does not pay for my lawyer. I cannot speak on that matter for them. All I know is that Hero is experiencing problems with some inside officers. All I can say is, sa lahat ng mga bagitong naisulat ko, siya ang may kakaibang lakas ng loob. I don’t have anything against Hero. I don’t even know him personally."

About the reported conflict between the Angeleses and Star Cinema executive Roxy Liquigan, Henry confirmed this and said "those are different stories. It happened while Hero was making ‘Can This Be Love?’ Hero was sick then, he was suffering from his illness known as Neuro Circulatory Asthenia and those Star Cinema people pushed us to finish the movie immediately because they said Sandara Park was leaving for Korea soon. We communicated with them but it was useless. They won’t listen and they blamed us when they had to pack up because we couldn’t come. There was even a mix up when we went to meet Sandara at the airport," he said in their defense.

When asked about the reported conflict between them and Star Magic head Johnny Manahan, Henry fired away, "I admit that we don’t agree most of the time about decisions on Hero’s career but Mr. Manahan would throw harsh words at me as if I wasn’t human," he said. Mr. Manahan could not be reached for comment regarding these complaints.

Henry looked back and said that all these negative write-ups from Cristy stemmed from their failure to commit in a guesting at Punchline bar, which Fermin had asked of them. "But we thought there was no problem at all. We apologized to her and she said it was okay. Then we were surprised to read all the bad write-ups she started to write in her columns. Until now we’re still asking why," he said.

Hero is currently back in school taking Fine Arts at UP Diliman. He is now on his 3rd year.

Naaliw ako kay Kris Aquino noong Sunday sa The Buzz. Pagkakita niya sa akin, tinawag niya ako para ipakilala kay James Yap. Ang totoo niyan, talagang hinihintay ako ni Kris. Ang nakakatuwang kwento, buong araw daw tinatanong ni James kung sino ang inyong lingkod. At heto na ang kwento kung bakit ako napasama sa kwento.

Isang gabi raw, nanaginip si Kris. Sa nasabing dream, sinabi ko raw sa kanya na nakita ko si James na may kasamang isang babae at magkasama silang kumakain ng ice cream. At isinumbong ko ito sa kanya. Kaya the following day, nung magkita sina Kris at James, ang nasabing panaginip ang isyu nila. Kaya panay daw ang tanong ni James sa akin.

Until finally, pormal akong ipinakilala ni Kris sa kanyang future husband. Natawa kami pareho ni James dahil pati panaginip ay pinapatulan ni Kris. Although hindi naman nila pinag-awayan ‘yon. Talagang mas na-curious si James na makilala ako kasi bukambibig daw ako ni Kris.

Noong Sunday was the only time na nakita ko ng malapitan si James. Tahimik lang ito. Ngumiti naman. Hindi palasalita pero mabait. At talaga namang gwapo siya in person. Gauging ‘yung ilang traits na nakita ko kay James, hindi imposibleng ma-in love si Kris dito.

Sina Claudine Barretto at Piolo Pascual ang nagkamit ng Best Actress at Best Actor respectively sa recent 53rd Famas Awards na ginanap sa PICC noong Sunday. Nakamit nina Claudine at Piolo ang nasabing parangal para sa mahusay nilang pagganap sa pelikulang Milan ng Star Cinema.

Sa kanyang acceptance speech, inamin ni Piolo na masaya siya dahil bago man lang natapos ang awards season, nakaisa siya. Consistent nominee siya sa iba’t ibang award-giving bodies.

Naging emotional naman si Claudine sa kanyang acceptance speech. She cited na bata pa lang, pinangarap na niyang magkaroon ng Famas award. Bukod kina Charo Santos, Malou Santos, Cory Vidanes, Johnny Manahan at Olivia Lamasan, pinasalamatan din ni Claudine ang boyfriend niyang si Raymart Santiago na siya ring nag-accompany pag-akyat niya sa stage.

Bukod sa Famas, una nang nakamit ni Claudine ang Best Actress award sa Luna Awards (Film Academy of the Philippines).

‘Bagong Buwan,’ ’Dekada ’70’ invited to Brussels Film Fest


As a result of successful showings at the recent Cannes Film Festival, organizers of the Brussels Film Festival have invited the producer, director and cast of Bagong Buwan and Dekada’70 to participate in the Brussels filmfest in Belguim this November.

Lawyer Espiridion Laxa, Metro Manila Film Festival Philippines (MMFFP) executive committee member, stated this in a recent report to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chair Bayani Fernando, who is the over-all chair of the MMFFP. Laxa led the Philippine delegation to Cannes, which included Claudine Barretto and sister Marjorie, Cesar Montano and Piolo Pascual.

Belgian film journalist Robert Melangreau, an organizer of the film festival, invited Laxa following the good reviews the movies garnered from world critics on May 20.

World filmmakers adjudged Bagong Buwan and Dekada’70—two of the six Filipino quality films that participated at Cannes’ "All Cinemas in the World" competition—as "cream of the crop," along with Panaghoy sa Suba and two other short films, all from the Philippines.

Laxa, in his report, said the rave reviews from the prestigious Cannes festival should encourage Filipino filmmakers to produce better-quality films and participate in future Cannes film festivals.

"The accolades bestowed on our films should bolster the efforts of Filipino film producers to send their films and the corresponding promotional materials to Cannes for purposes of competition and marketing," he recommended, adding that this could be part of the solution to the consistent downturn of the annual output of the local film industry.

Bagong Buwan topbills Cesar Montano and Director Marilou Diaz Abaya; Dekada ’70, Vilma Santos, Christopher de Leon and Director Chito Roño; Milan, Claudine Barretto, Piolo Pascual and Director Olive Lamasan; and Panaghoy sa Suba, Cesar Montano both as lead star and director.

The two local short films exhibited in the competition were Liyab by Director Socorro Fernandez and Batang Trapo by Director Ramon de Guzman.

One of the productive aspects of the Philippine delegation’s visit to Cannes was the discovery of Thailand’s "Movie Town" amendment to the Board of Investment Law, which exempts movie producers from all taxes on machineries and equipment and exemption from payment of corporate tax for eight years.

As such, the film mogul underscored the need for the Philippine Board of Investment to pattern its film policy after Thailand.

Is ABC-5 doing anything at all?

ABC-5 is not in the same league as GMA-7 and ABS-CBN.


It hardly even deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. Channel 5’s market share is so small that it gets scant consideration from advertisers and media buyers, and consequently its revenues can only be a tiny fraction of those of the two giants. Ask the man on the street what he associates with ABC-5 and he will most likely and rather appropriately say "Wow Mali."

"In fairness," as showbiz denizens would put it, however, ABC-5 is the only other private, non-government-sequestered television network in the country; and thus, the only network with a ghost of a chance of challenging the duopoly over the long term. The acquisition of the network by Tonyboy Cojuangco in 2003 put it in a position to compete; and the first few moves of the new management generated a good deal of excitement and anticipation.

Getting the PBA games was a brilliant idea that instantly filled the ABC-5 schedule with programming practically guaranteed to rate decently and pull in a few advertisers. Picking up "American Idol" was also particularly astute considering that all the other local networks had ignored the show before Jasmine Trias made it the talk of the town.

Launching "Sentro" and "Big News" together with "The Probe Team Documentaries" and "Inquirer TV" spoke of a determination to build a strong, independent and credible news organization. Airing film masterpieces such as "Kagemusha" and "Farewell My Concubine" gave substance to Cojuangco’s declaration of support for intelligent alternative TV fare.

Of course, there were missteps as well—Amy Perez’s tabloid talk show, Juliana Palermo’s X-rated magazine show and Epi Quizon’s reality show slash beauty contest. Thankfully, they were all shortlived programs. But again, to be fair, ABC-5 should at least get points for trying out groundbreaking concepts. In fact, some observers say that if these programs had been produced and aired by either GMA-7 or ABS-CBN, they could have been wildly successful.

Currently, ABC-5 is touting another set of mildly innovative programs: "Club TV," a youthful, energy-filled dance show; "IslaMusik," a surprisingly smart look at Filipino music; and "Dokyu," a view of the world through the eyes of college students. Still to come, but already getting a lot of press, is a show in which professional Filipino actors compete for a chance to break into nothing less than Hollywood.

ABC-5 is clearly not doing nothing. In spite of everything it is doing, however, its ratings are stuck in the low single digits. The real question therefore is: Why can’t ABC-5 compete?

Here are ten things ABC-5 has got to work on:

1. Signal strength. ABC-5’s transmitter has less than half the power of the GMA-7 and ABS-CBN transmitters. As a result, for example, people in southern portions of Metro Manila who might want to watch "Club TV" (because they have relatives among the dancers) can’t do so because channel 5’s signal is weak over there. The longer ABC-5 fails to address this problem, the more money it will waste on programming that many people don’t get a chance to see.

2. Picture quality. Those viewers who do get the ABC-5 signal often get pictures that are grainy or almost monochromatic. It’s no fun to watch the PBA if you can’t see the players clearly. ABC-5 has to buy, rent or borrow new cameras, more lights, better playback machines, etc, etc. all the way down the line. With everybody else going digital and high definition, nothing less is acceptable.

3. Infomercials. Animated graphics of enlarged breasts may have a loyal following, ( :lol: ) but no self-respecting network can air the same dubbed Chinese infomercials over and over again all day and hope to be taken seriously.

4. Canned programs. Studio 23, RPN-9, Star TV, ETC and AXN all carry the top US programs. In order to stand out in this crowd, ABC-5 should only broadcast the current season of a canned series and should at the very least air ahead of the cable channels. Jennifer Aniston has moved on from "Friends." Maybe ABC-5 should, too.

5. Production. GMA-7 spends over a million pesos to produce each episode of its telenovelas. Obviously the people at ABC-5 can’t match that level of spending, but they have to realize that even the best concepts will be ruined by cheap execution. The recent Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant is a case in point. Bringing in Fil-Ams and Fil-Fors from all over the world was a winning idea, but the staging of the pageant was about as good as a German Moreno "extravaganza" back in the 80’s.

6. Stars. Simply stated, Filipino televiewers want to see stars, but ABC-5 doesn’t have any. Ariel and Maverick are fresh talents, not stars. When the freshness fades, real talent has to kick in. Can these guys do more than the disco duck walk?

7. Marketing. The banners in Cubao are cute. But not nearly enough. To build market share, ABC-5 has to get the word out about its programs. Like almost everything else in this list, better publicity requires more money. You can try to be creative and get more bang for your buck, but at the end of the day you still have to shell out the cash.

8. News coverage. Notwithstanding the heroic efforts of ABC-5’s reporters, it is often painfully obvious that they don’t get all the top stories. ABC-5 has to be a lot more reliable in this respect if it wants to compete in News.

9. PBA. Brilliant stop-gap programming, but not something a general entertainment network wants in the long run, especially because the basketball league has all kinds of problems of its own.

10. Other Sports. Ladies’ golf?

First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo has "volunteered" to go abroad following media reports of his alleged influence on several government transactions and appointments, President Arroyo announced Wednesday.

"My husband has volunteered to go abroad. His projects have been the object of pillory," Mrs. Arroyo said in a speech before the Philippine Business Leaders Forum at the Manila Polo Club.

She added that Arroyo's leave would dispel doubt and innuendo about the first gentleman's influence in the government.

The President also reminded public officials of her administrative order disallowing public officials not to transact with members of the first family on government contracts and supplies.

She noted that the accomplishments of the administration had been "overshadowed by political noise" due to the wiretapping and jueteng issues affecting the administration and the First Family

Police, military reaffirm loyalty to Arroyo

THE POLICE and the military have reaffirmed their loyalty to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo despite an admission that she had spoken with an election official during the counting of votes in the 2004 election, as recorded on wiretapped tapes.
They also vowed to crush what they called "violent and armed actions" that could be launched in response to Arroyo's confession.

"The officers, men, and women of the PNP [Philippine National Police] fully support President Arroyo in her courageous apology before the nation," PNP chief Director Geenral Arturo Lomibao said.

"The men and women of the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines] fully recognize and remain loyal to the President as the duly constituted authority and our commander-in-chief. Likewise, the AFP shall continue
to follow the chain of command," military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said.

Amid threats of street protests from militant and pro-opposition groups, Lomibao said: "The PNP shall

Arroyo's address broke three weeks of silence, which spawned political tension and threatened the existence of the incumbent government.

Protesters have taken to the streets and opposition leaders have called on the President to resign to pave the way for snap elections.

The President has rejected these calls, insisting that she won a fresh six-year mandate "fair and square."

Fiesta Filipina Wowowee
TFC subscribers had a chance to participate in the popular noontime show Wowowee when it was hosted by ABS-CBNI at the Fiesta Filipina at the Civic Center last June 19. The Civic Center was packed and the performances of guest artists Piolo Pascual and Martin Nievera were widely applauded. It is estimated that about 25,000 people watched the show. Highlight of the show was one of the contestants winning the grand prize of One Million Pesos. Hosts of the show were Janelle Jamer and Marvin Agustin.
This was a free event hosted by ABS-CBNI to provide entertainment to the Filipino community. By bringing popular shows in Manila to San Francisco ABS-CBNI hopes to relieve the homesickness of the Filipinos here. This is also an opportunity for the TFC subscribers here to see their favorite stars in person and also be a part of the show.

The show was put up by ABS-CBNI as a way of thanking its subscribers who have been loyal to the channel since it started airing 11 years ago. With the Wowowee show, the subscribers not only had a chance to see their favorites stars, they also had a chance to appear on TV and win 1 Million Pesos.

And in the tradition of Maalaala Mo Kaya’s text drives for Fatima Soriano, which raised P1.2 million for Fatima’s treatment for retrolental degeneration and end stage renal failure; and a similarly great amount for a liver transplant for another young victim named Kirby, Maalaala Mo Kaya invites its viewers to again open up their hearts for another text drive for the real-life Jonnel Enorme.

This July 25, Jonnel Enorme is set to compete in Los Angeles, California for another international title. Unfortunately, even the airfare for such an exercise will stretch the finances of his already-struggling family.
