IS ABC 5 DOING ANYTHING AT ALL?

Is ABC-5 doing anything at all?

ABC-5 is not in the same league as GMA-7 and ABS-CBN.


It hardly even deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. Channel 5’s market share is so small that it gets scant consideration from advertisers and media buyers, and consequently its revenues can only be a tiny fraction of those of the two giants. Ask the man on the street what he associates with ABC-5 and he will most likely and rather appropriately say "Wow Mali."

"In fairness," as showbiz denizens would put it, however, ABC-5 is the only other private, non-government-sequestered television network in the country; and thus, the only network with a ghost of a chance of challenging the duopoly over the long term. The acquisition of the network by Tonyboy Cojuangco in 2003 put it in a position to compete; and the first few moves of the new management generated a good deal of excitement and anticipation.

Getting the PBA games was a brilliant idea that instantly filled the ABC-5 schedule with programming practically guaranteed to rate decently and pull in a few advertisers. Picking up "American Idol" was also particularly astute considering that all the other local networks had ignored the show before Jasmine Trias made it the talk of the town.

Launching "Sentro" and "Big News" together with "The Probe Team Documentaries" and "Inquirer TV" spoke of a determination to build a strong, independent and credible news organization. Airing film masterpieces such as "Kagemusha" and "Farewell My Concubine" gave substance to Cojuangco’s declaration of support for intelligent alternative TV fare.

Of course, there were missteps as well—Amy Perez’s tabloid talk show, Juliana Palermo’s X-rated magazine show and Epi Quizon’s reality show slash beauty contest. Thankfully, they were all shortlived programs. But again, to be fair, ABC-5 should at least get points for trying out groundbreaking concepts. In fact, some observers say that if these programs had been produced and aired by either GMA-7 or ABS-CBN, they could have been wildly successful.

Currently, ABC-5 is touting another set of mildly innovative programs: "Club TV," a youthful, energy-filled dance show; "IslaMusik," a surprisingly smart look at Filipino music; and "Dokyu," a view of the world through the eyes of college students. Still to come, but already getting a lot of press, is a show in which professional Filipino actors compete for a chance to break into nothing less than Hollywood.

ABC-5 is clearly not doing nothing. In spite of everything it is doing, however, its ratings are stuck in the low single digits. The real question therefore is: Why can’t ABC-5 compete?

Here are ten things ABC-5 has got to work on:

1. Signal strength. ABC-5’s transmitter has less than half the power of the GMA-7 and ABS-CBN transmitters. As a result, for example, people in southern portions of Metro Manila who might want to watch "Club TV" (because they have relatives among the dancers) can’t do so because channel 5’s signal is weak over there. The longer ABC-5 fails to address this problem, the more money it will waste on programming that many people don’t get a chance to see.

2. Picture quality. Those viewers who do get the ABC-5 signal often get pictures that are grainy or almost monochromatic. It’s no fun to watch the PBA if you can’t see the players clearly. ABC-5 has to buy, rent or borrow new cameras, more lights, better playback machines, etc, etc. all the way down the line. With everybody else going digital and high definition, nothing less is acceptable.

3. Infomercials. Animated graphics of enlarged breasts may have a loyal following, ( ) but no self-respecting network can air the same dubbed Chinese infomercials over and over again all day and hope to be taken seriously.

4. Canned programs. Studio 23, RPN-9, Star TV, ETC and AXN all carry the top US programs. In order to stand out in this crowd, ABC-5 should only broadcast the current season of a canned series and should at the very least air ahead of the cable channels. Jennifer Aniston has moved on from "Friends." Maybe ABC-5 should, too.

5. Production. GMA-7 spends over a million pesos to produce each episode of its telenovelas. Obviously the people at ABC-5 can’t match that level of spending, but they have to realize that even the best concepts will be ruined by cheap execution. The recent Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant is a case in point. Bringing in Fil-Ams and Fil-Fors from all over the world was a winning idea, but the staging of the pageant was about as good as a German Moreno "extravaganza" back in the 80’s.

6. Stars. Simply stated, Filipino televiewers want to see stars, but ABC-5 doesn’t have any. Ariel and Maverick are fresh talents, not stars. When the freshness fades, real talent has to kick in. Can these guys do more than the disco duck walk?

7. Marketing. The banners in Cubao are cute. But not nearly enough. To build market share, ABC-5 has to get the word out about its programs. Like almost everything else in this list, better publicity requires more money. You can try to be creative and get more bang for your buck, but at the end of the day you still have to shell out the cash.

8. News coverage. Notwithstanding the heroic efforts of ABC-5’s reporters, it is often painfully obvious that they don’t get all the top stories. ABC-5 has to be a lot more reliable in this respect if it wants to compete in News.

9. PBA. Brilliant stop-gap programming, but not something a general entertainment network wants in the long run, especially because the basketball league has all kinds of problems of its own.

10. Other Sports. Ladies’ golf?

Korina Sanchez is a broadcast journalist practicing actively as one of television and radio's frontline personalities for her home network ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

In a span of 20 years in the field Korina has emerged as one of the country's most efficient reporters, trusted anchors and preferred hosts. She enjoys and maintains both critical and popular acclaim as she is multi-awarded and is a consistent ratings drawer.

Korina is known in the industry for her adherence to excellence in production; among her peers for accuracy in reporting and her exclusive interviews; to her public for her clarity of thought, sound commentary, versatility in conversation, unwavering stand on current events and issues and her advocacies which she pursues relentlessly.

Korina started as one of the youngest editorial assistants at the government station MBS Channel 4 when she was fresh out of college at 18 years of age. Excelling in extemporaneous speech, drama, literature, languages and creative writing all throughout high school at St. Theresa's College and her AB Communication Arts degree at Maryknoll College Foundation. Korina believed her calling had always been in the field of information and communication.

From being reporter of current events, beat departments, military sieges, catastrophes, tragedies and shootouts Korina proved herself just as capable in other areas of the industry and business. she became Executive Producer AND host of programs like MAGANDANG UMAGA with then-anchor Noli de Castro, BAYAN KO SAGOT KO, HOY GISING!, OPTIONS, BALITANG K, the newscast PULSO Aksyon Balita and ISYU 101. She dabbled in entertainment with Kris Aquino in MORNING GIRLS which ran for a year and a half. She also started a career in AM radio 15 years ago 'til today doing socio-political commentary with co-anchor Ted Failon over DZMM with a program called Aksyon Ngayon renamed Tambalang Failon at Sanchez later. In the 20 years this year in media where she was born and bred Korina has won numerous awards from all of the prestigious award-giving bodies for television including the Gawad CCP para sa Telebisyon, The Community Outstanding Young Achievers (COYA) Awards, Catholic Mass Media Awards, KBP Golden Dove Awards, PMPC Star Awards for TV and many others for both the programs she produces and her performance as news anchor and host. Korina's most recent awards in 2004 are Best Newscast and Best Newscaster for TV Patrol, Best Talk Show Host for Morning Girls both from PMPC Star Awards; Best Radio Program for Korina sa Umaga from the KBP Golden Dove Awards, Youth Award and Pipol of the Year voted by viewers of the program Pipol in Channel 2. Korina was also surveyed by both PULSE ASIA and SWS as consistently within the Top 3 broadcast news personalities in the country the past five years landing in No. 1 in four of those five years reflecting categories including Trust and Credibility.

Today Korina writes, directs and hosts the top-rating weekly primetime program Rated K and is Chief Correspondent for the ABS-CBN News Division. REJECTING the President's apology, Susan Roces yesterday asked Mrs. Macapagal-Arroyo to resign since she betrayed the people and stole the presidency.

The widow of Fernando Poe, Jr. said Mrs. Arroyo has no more right to govern since she has lost the trust and confidence of the people.

"Hindi ko matatanggap ang iyong sorry. You are full of promises. Obviously, you have no love for your country. You have stolen the presidency not once, but twice," she said.

"Habang pinapanood ko siya sa telebisyon at humingi ng sorry, kitang-kita sa mata niya na hindi siya sinsero at hindi galing sa puso niya. Gusto na naman niyang isahan at paikutin ang batas. Ang sinungaling ay kapatid ng magnanakaw," she said with clenched fists.

The actress also said she is willing to join the people in calling for the President's ouster. "Simulan nyo, tatapusin ko. She however noted that she is just an ordinary citizen, and that it will be "my countrymen who can best decide her fate."

It was the first time that Roces appeared to the public in a fiery mood. She explained that she got mad when the Gloriagate tapes surfaced because it only confirmed the opposition's claim that her husband was cheated in the 2004 presidential elections.

"Hindi galing sa oposisyon ang mga tapes kaya ito ay sagot ng langit na malaman ng tao ang katotohanan," she said.

Susan hints of plans she can's reveal

SAYING "Umpisahan mo, tatapusin ko!," Susan Roces yesterday said the people should learn from the lessons of three People Power revolts, nixing suggestions of another populist upheaval to force President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to step down. Roces asked her instead to resign.
She also cast doubt on the capability of Vice President Noli de Castro to govern, saying the people will be the judge whom they will install to lead them as their leader and president.

Roces, who would like to be called Mrs. Poe, bared studies have been conducted on alternative forms of government as she expressed serious doubts on the capability of the Vice President to govern in the event of an Arroyo resignation.

President will not vacate the Palace.

"There are plans that I cannot reveal as of now," Roces said in a press conference at the Club Filipino where she called for the immediate resignation of President Arroyo.

"I think that (resignation) is the most honorable thing that she can do," she said. "Sinira mo ang pagtitiwala ng mga kababayan mo, wala kang karapatang mamuno sa atin."

The visibly irked widow of the late opposition standard-bearer Fernando Poe Jr. also brushed off the holding of snap elections, citing serious doubts on the credibility of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

However, she did not discount the possibility of leading a civil disobedience campaign like the non-payment of taxes -- "depending on the situation."

Roces stressed that like ordinary citizens, she was enraged that President Arroyo has stolen the presidency "not only once, but twice."

In the wake of the President's admission of a "lapse in judgment" in talking to a Comelec official alleged to be former Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano, Roces said that she was enraged.

"Labis akong nalungkot sa aking nakita at narinig. Alam niyang bawal iyon. Nilabag niya ang batas at iyon ay inilihim niya," Roces said.

The President has done enough damage to the country, Roces said, adding that before the foreign investors can trust the President, she must have the trust of the Filipino.

When asked by a reporter if she would join protest actions, Roces bluntly replied: "Umpisahan mo, tatapusin ko. Kung merong magsisimula at kung kelan, handa akong sumama."

Rescue

Top officials of the Palace came to the rescue of President Arroyo and disputed the claims of Roces that the President cheated her way to the presidency, stressing that the remarks could have come from "a writhing widow."

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Gabby Claudio declared there is no basis for a snap election, pointing out it is not provided for under the law since the position of the president and the vice president is not vacant.

Also, Claudio said it is clear from the results of the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) and exit polls, including the assessment of the U.S. Embassy, that President Arroyo won the elections fair and square.

Claudio likewise said that the conversation in the controversial audio compact disc did not indicate any attempt to rig the elections, insisting the recording cannot be accepted as a basis for fraud in the May 2004 elections.

"Hindi naman ipinag-utos ng Pangulo sa tape na magdaya sa eleksyon," he said.

Claudio claimed the President was a clear winner during the alleged call sometime on May 24 when about 98 percent has been canvassed after which Mrs. Arroyo garnered a margin of over a million votes over Poe, her closest rival.

He said the President was in a predicament upon hearing the wiretapped recordings so she sealed her lips for some time to weigh the security implications and legal ramifications of breaking her silence on the issue.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye rejected the accusations of Roces, saying the President only talked with a Comelec official to protect her votes and not to influence the outcome of the elections.

Bunye said that the Palace understands the emotional outburst and anguish of Roces, appealing for more objectivity in discerning the fact that the President did not cheat in the elections.

Kuwela rin ang naging sagot ng aktres sa nagtanong kung willing ba siyang makipag-usap kay Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano. Sabi nito, "Alam mo ba kung nasa'n siya?"

Simple man ang naging tugon, sigurado kaming tagos-buto ng reporter ang pagkapahiya. Kasi naman, pinag-isipan sana ang tanong, 'noh!

Samantala, samu't sari ang naging reaksyon ng mga taga-industriya sa mga pinakawalan ng biyuda ng action king at nasirang presidential bet Fernando Poe, Jr., may pro at may kontra. So, narito po:

What’s happening to Judy Ann Santos? Well, aside from being a "favorite" of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and having a loving and doting boyfriend in TV host Ryan Agoncillo with whom she spends most of her time these days, we’re sure, her fans would like to know what’s in store for their idol. Because it’s been quite a time since they last saw her in a TV or movie project.


The fans seems to be anxiously awaiting for any project that their idol may be doing soon. Fans may be a jealous lot, but Juday’s supporters have given their thumbs-up to her romantic relationship with Ryan. They approved of it and so it means they’ll keep on supporting and adoring her despite her having a regular and genuine boyfriend now.

Well, it will certainly delight her fans to know that Juday’s manager, the fearless and indefatigable Alfie Lorenzo is negotiating for several projects for his protege. When we saw Alfie and Juday at the Windows Café at ABS-CBN recently, they were talking to network executives about Juday’s projects, in particular a movie which might be shot in Spain. The movie project has long been awaiting the light of day. And now that Juday is not so busy, Alfie said they’re hoping they will start shooting soon.

After the movie, Juday is expected to do another series for ABS-CBN. Her last was "Krystala," which she did after "Basta’t Kasama Kita," the action-drama series which paired her (and romantically linked her!) to the controversial action star Robin Padilla.

So, about her and Ryan Agoncillo, when are they planning to get married? Juday is already 27 years old and she’s been in the public eye since she was a teener. But although she has heard it told around that a woman should have her own child at least before she turns 30, Juday said she’s not tired of single-blessedness yet. She said she still loves her job; she doesn’t like it to happen that when she’s already married, she’ll be missing her showbiz career so bad that she would want to go back to it.

So, in the meantime, she’ll take advantage of the opportunities being offered her, and maybe when she and Ryan are both ready they’ll talk about marriage. Of course, Juday would want to have her own family and children, most especially, but "in due time, kapag ready na ako sa buhay may asawa."

For her, just because she’s already 27 doesn’t mean she’s in panicsville.

For the first time, nagkita-kita the other night sa isang gathering sina Kris Aquino, James Yap and Alvin Patrimonio. Kuwento ni Mae Ochoa, feeling awkward daw si Kris dahil feeling niya, nai-ignore siya ng ex-boyfriend niya sa dinner for sports editors and PBA Press Corp hosted by James Yap na candidate pala for PBA Rookie of the Year. Lahat daw kasi ng present tinapik ni Alvin sa balikat, pero pagdating kay Kris, parang dedma raw ito.

Pero kuwento naman ni Ms. Dina Marie Villena, PSN Sports Editor, ‘Hi’ lang ang batian ng dalawa.

Team manager si Alvin ng Purefoods kaya wala siyang choice kundi suportahan ang kanilang shooting guard na si James. Hindi naman daw nag-stay ng matagal si James, mga 15 minutes lang ito.

Anyway, almost 9:00 p.m. daw nang dumating si Kris sa Pantalan restaurant. "Grabe pala ang PR niya. Lovable siya at ang daming kuwento," sabi ni Ate Dina.

Isa sa kuwento ni Kris according naman kay Mae Ochoa kung ano ang reaction ni Presidente Corazon Aquino nang sabihin niyang nakipag-date siya sa basketball player. Nang i-mention niya raw ang name na James Yap: "Talaga magaling siya. Rookie ‘yan ng UAAP."

Galing daw ng Manaoag, Pangasinan sina Kris and James bago sila tumuloy sa Pantalan. Inabot ng 12NU ang nasabing dinner.

Nakuwento ni Kris na seloso raw si James. Ayaw daw nitong makipag-kissing siya sa movie and TV kaya two movies na lang ang gagawin niya - Sukob with Claudine Barretto and another movie under Star Cinema at willing siyang i-give up ang career niya.

Nagbigay na ng official statement ang ABS-CBN tungkol sa appointment ng mga bagong official ng News and Current Affairs.

Nauna na si Maria Ressa bilang head ng ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, si Charie Villa naman ang magiging head ng News gathering, si Luchie Cruz Valdez ay mananatiling Head of the Network’s Current Affairs group, Beth Frondoso, CBN will continue as Supervising Producer of TV Patrol, Vince Rodriguez, one of the network’s veteran executive producers and news managers will continue to head the Studio 23 news operation and JR Umipig was appointed Head of News Engineering.

"The objective here is to make ABS-CBN the most credible and respected in the field of news and current affairs," Mr. Cito Alejandro said regarding the appointments.

Pero may ilang nag-aapela sa re-appointment ni Luchi Cruz Valdez dahil since mag-transfer daw ito sa ABS-CBN, wala naman itong na-prove. "Siya pa nga ang nagha-handle sa TV Patrol nang bumagsak ang rating nila," sabi ng isang ABS-CBN insider na ang pakiramdam ngayon ay dead end na ang kanyang career dahil sa early retirement.

Maging ang kapalaran ni Mr. DJ Sta. Ana ay tinatanong nila kung saan na pupunta.

Balitang marami pang mangyayaring changes sa buong kumpanya ng Dos.

Pero kung meron man daw pinaka-masama ang loob ngayon, si Erwin Tulfo daw ‘yun. Remember nga naman, meron siyang offer no’n sa GMA na tinanggihan niya. Tapos later, remember di ba may sinabi pa siyang offensive against GMA at may condition na bawal sila mag-transfer sa competing network.

By the way, sana rin makita ng bagong management ang mga irresponsible journalist ng News and Current Affairs ng ABS-CBN na ginagamit ang kanilang programa para paboran ang iilang tao.

Kristine-Diet fans grope for truth

SHOWBUSINESS is full of couples whose marriages crumbled. They entered marriage thinking it will be heaven on earth. Friends warn them not to rush but, who cares, the important thing is they're in love. So they marry, and after only a few months, both are already full of complaints. The marriage they expected to be fulfilling turned out to be disappointing. And so, they break up and seek annulment, just like Kristine Hermosa and Diether Ocampo.

Interviewed separately by Boy Abunda, both admitted that indeed, they got married and are now separated. It was last December that it was reported that they were officially married by Mayor Tony Esquivel of Jaen, Nueva Ecija. ABS-CBN tried to cash in on it by giving them a teleserye, "Till Death Do Us Part," which

got dismal rating, a sure indication that the public does not really care for them.

In the interview, Boy asks direct questions but Diether was barely coherent. In summary, this is more or less what he said: "Mahirap magbigay ng mga detalye. Hindi namin alam kung paano haharapin ang magugulong sitwasyon. Pero hindi kami nagsisisi sa nangyari. Ang mga panahong 'yon, walang kasinsarap. Kasama mo ang taong mahal mo. Tumitigil ang oras, tumitigil ang ikot ng mundo. Pero marami kaming aspetong hindi napaghandaan at pinag-isipan kasi ang pinagtutuunan lang naming ng pansin ang sarili namin, 'yung sarap ng feeling na marami kaming gustong ibahagi sa isa't isa. At that time, akala namin, 'yun ang tama. Maselan ang sitwasyon namin ngayon kasi nasa korte na ang kaso. Sana maintindihan n'yo na lang kami. Sana unawain n'yo na lang. Hindi kami nagdadamot o may itinatago dahil wala kaming masamang intensiyon. Marami kaming pinagdaanan. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang kalalabasan nito. Marami kaming bagay na hindi pinagkasunduan, pero walang nagbago sa pagmamahal ko mula noong araw na 'yon. Ganoon pa rin ang nararamdaman ko para sa kanya. Hindi ko malalagyan ng label ang pagmamahal ko sa kanya. Basta mahal na mahal ko pa rin siya hanggang ngayon."

Nagsimula ang romansa nila sa set ng teleseryeng "Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas."

"Ilang beses in-offer sa'kin yon, tinanggihan ko kasi naiilang ako sa tambalan nila ni Jericho (Rosales). Hindi namin ginustong mahulog ang loob namin sa isa't isa, pero hindi mo pala talaga puwedeng diktahan ang puso. Sinabi namin, hindi puwedeng maging tayo dahil may mga taong maaapektuhan, pero totoo na ang mga ginagawa naming emosyon sa eksena. Willing akong balikan si Kristine."

Heto naman more or less ang pahayag ni Kristine: "Marami kaming naging maling simula. Ngayon, alam ko na, dapat matuto tayong makinig sa mga taong mas nakakaalam. Nagpakasal kami. May seremonya. Pero hindi kami nagsama bilang mag-asawa. (Gusto yata ni Kristine papaniwalain tayo na virgin pa rin siya up to now.) Mahal ko siya, tinanggap ko ang alok niyang kasal. That time, ang dami kong napi-feel na insecurities. Magulo sa parte niya, sa parte ko. Kasi ang daming mali, hindi kami nakapagsimula nang maayos. Ngayon, gusto kong itama ang lahat, na ipagmalaki namin ang isa't isa, asawa ko 'yan. Pero hindi ko alam kung saan ako lulugar sa buhay niya, kung saan ako nakapuwesto. Ayoko nang balikan at idetalye ang mga nangyari. Basta nagkaroon kami ng misunderstandings. Hindi ako selosa. Ang ibang mga tao, huwag nila akong basta i-judge. Nagmamahal ako, ibinibigay ko ang lahat."

To the question whether they are still on or not anymore, she quipped: "Marami kaming problema na kailangang ayusin. Mahal ko pa rin siya. Walang nagbabago sa nararamdaman ko for him. Masyado kaming naging totoo sa isa't isa, nakalimutan namin ang ibang bagay. Dapat, huwag magpabulag sa mga nararamdaman. Huwag magmadali. Gusto ko lang sabihin sa kanya, kung anuman ang pinagdaraanan natin, narito lang ako. Patience. Sana pareho tayo ng goals, nang maayos na ito and in the future, magkikita pa rin tayo at ipagpapatuloy ang mga pangarap natin together. Sana malampasan namin ito at maging masaya ang lahat para sa amin."

At this point, this is a piece of our mind: You brought that upon yourselves. Especially now that both of you stated that you have nothing to regret about. Magdusa kayo.

Makalipas ang isang linggong pagdinig, nakipag-areglo na lamang si Murad Muhammad sa kasong isinampa laban sa kanya ng boksingero sa US District Court ng New York.

Inakusahan ni Pacquiao si Muhammad ng paglabag sa isang batas sa Amerika na nagbibigay ng proteksyon sa mga boksingero laban sa pang-aabuso.

Maraming ebidensya ang nagpalakas sa kaso ni Pacquiao laban sa promoter, kabilang dito ang mga bank record, kontrata at marami pang dokumento na nagpapatunay na dinaya ang boksingero.

Sa pagtakbo ng pagdinig sa kaso, hindi inaasahan ni Pacquiao na mabubulgar ang isang sikretong kontrata sa pagitan ni Muhammad at Rod Nazario, na matagal niyang naging manager.

News Briefs on the Rehabilitation Operations

After six months, Sagip Kapamilya has conducted a strategic rehabilitation program which includes livelihood and medical programs. Updates as follows:

> Farm clearing and preparation. The state-of-the-art farm tractor being utilized can plow 3 has. in a day. More convenient to use as it reduces time as compared to conventional ones that can finish the same area in 6 days. The project targets the first five barangays in Infanta.

Noted before was the dengue outbreak in the province. Due to the backhoe rental, it jumpstarted the declogging and clearing of the Balucanag creek last June 14 that lessened the occurrence of dengue cases. Rice seeds, vegetable seeds and fertilizer will be distributed this July 2005.

> Health and Nutrition. Potable water is being distributed to 20 barangays. Medical missions are scheduled June 30 and July 1 while, supplemental feeding will start mid-July 2005.

Three ambulances were turned over recently to the municipalities of Infanta, Nakar and Real that will further boost Sagip Kapamilya's health program activities.

> Shelter Program with Kalinga Luzon. Ninety-four (94) out of 100 housing unit were completed, 34 in Santiago City, Isabela, 28 Bongabong and 32 in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro with the support of Kalinga Luzon. Other areas to be developed are: Maria Aurora, Aurora; Nakar and Infanta, Quezon; Calabanga, Camarines Sur; Basud Camarines Norte; Bulalacao, Mansalay, Roxas and Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. Funds for the second set of 100 houses was already released this June.

> Bridge financing for NIA irrigation repair. Through in-house financing, farming communities can now access irrigation service. The next step will be to reprogram Php5 million to finance viable livelihood projects in 10 SAGIP-GK shelter sites, and, to implement projects in support of environmental and children and family concerns.

Michael Jackson is angered by the way he is mocked in rapper Eminem 's recently released video "Just Lose It" and has asked cable music stations to remove the video from their rotations.

In the video, Eminem is costumed as Jackson and is seen with a group of boys in the background, jumping around as he sings about Jackson's child molestation allegations: "Come here, little kiddie, on my lap. Guess who's back with a brand new rap."

Jackson has pleaded not guilty in Santa Barbara County to child molestation, conspiracy and administering alcohol to an underage companion.

"I am very angry at Eminem's depiction of me in his video," Jackson said Tuesday in an interview with comedian Steve Harvey on Los Angeles radio station 100.3 FM. "I feel that it is outrageous and disrespectful. It is one thing to spoof, but it is another to be demeaning and insensitive."

Also in the video, Eminem ridicules plastic surgery done on Jackson's nose, and an accident in which Jackson's hair caught fire while he was filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

Only Black Entertainment Television has agreed to pull the video. The network's president and founder, Robert Johnson, said he felt it was inappropriate to disparage a celebrity.

the last episode of Beauty and the Geek had three teams facing off in a hiking race. It was the uber-geek Richard versus his arch rival Chuck and the boy scout Shawn & superfit Scarlet. Now the fix was on. Now if this wasn't fixed it was some perfect timing, Shawn takes about ten steps and falls over with all the dramatics of a 40's screen siren. His partner, not in on the fix I assume, jets past everyone else. Chuck and Caitilin win and are safe but wait how are the producer going to insure that Richard wins, well during the final quiz his partner Mindi aces her questions and Shawn stumbles and loses the game.
If the WB and the prodcuers of this show haven't Punk'd us then they just edited the show nearly perfectly to suit the situation. I'm mean if Richard is real then everyone must hate him, they just opted to only show the audience the run-ins he had with Chuck.
Either way one more episode left and it's the two rivals going head to head. Whoever wins the star will be Richard even if he loses the $250,000 he is still going to get swept up by Kutcher's production company.

I didn't like this kind of movie, maybe I pay for the Angelina, because in this movie got some "shadow" of "TOM RIDER", this is my personal opinion and comments, so if u really wanna waste a money and go for it, I hope the "Initial D" and "Batman Begin" will be better.

TV's biggest crime - it's a thief of time

Television viewing can make you happy - but only if you can afford it, writes Peter Martin.

IF YOU really want to be happy, throw away your television set. That's the bizarre finding of new economic research completely at odds with traditional assumptions. It has traditionally been assumed that people who choose to do a lot of something must enjoy it. And we certainly choose to watch a lot of TV.

Other activities affect us in the same sort of way. One is smoking. Cigarettes hurt smokers, but they do so slowly. Immediately, they offer relaxation - which becomes addictive.

Bruno Frey could see how television might act like that. It offers an immediate benefit - relaxation, with the costs not apparent until later. Those costs include tiredness, weak social relationships and insufficient attention to study and careers.

People who don't care about the future or who lack self-control will watch more TV than they should, and will be less happy as a result.

Opinion polls suggest that this is the case for many Americans. Forty per cent of US adults and 70 per cent of teenagers say they spend too much time watching TV.



What I concede most is the "high opportunity costs" for people like me.. let me expand this further based on how my evening turned out yesterday.

Now the first part of it was good, actually very Good as me & my kid enjoyed a productive session of playtime & I shall explain this later...

But after we managed to put her to sleep around 9 pm, I was consumed with staying awake till 11 pm so that I can watch the first 15 overs of the Aus vs Eng 3rd( inconsequential) ODI.. Wife was tired & chose to go to sleep around 10 pm after we did the customary TV surfing. Left all alone I did more channel surfing & got bored & so went online & read up all possible news info.
Came back to watch TV around 10.45 pm & was right on time as England captain Vaughan was giving the customary toss loser interview which meant Aus won the toss & they seem to have elected to bat. England bowled 15 overs by around 12.05 am or so but then I did channel surfing & caught Venus Williams tennis & so lingered on a few more minutes. Then channel surfed again & came back to the cricket game that had a seemingly interesting passage of play ( don't seem to remember now).

Managed to somehow will myself into dragging myself to Bed around 12.30 am.

Thankfully I am quick to sleep but the fact was I had already missed out on around 2 hrs of sleep.
Kid did her usual mid night wake-up which meant it was time to transfer her to our Bed & I used the opportunity to catch up on bit more of cricket It was 2 am & I spent another 10 mins( 3 overs) & went to bed as Symonds got run-out. Again thankfully I am a qucik sleeper but I can visualise the difficulty for people like my wife who aren't quick sleepers. It would mean they would spend 30 mins or so getting back to sleep if their sleep gets disrupted( the way I did for 10 mins)

Woke up again at 7 am & got quickly to the TV to check out if the last phase of the match was on( unlikely as it must have neded aroun 6.30).. but then lingered on to catch up on news about the match which took another 5 mins.. tried to go back to sleep but this time I could only get half asleep..

Thankfully I didn't feel too tired as I still got around 6.5+ hrs sleep & my previous days sleep was more than adequate, But I can see the "high opportunity costs" for me..

If I had no TV or internet, I would be sleeping earlier, rising early which means I could exercise or meditate calmly & for longer durations.

It would also mean that my evenings may be better spent reading a book or spending time with family.or fixing up family work instead of postponing it all to weekends( which means weekends can be slotted to more outings with family).

Its funny, I know what the solution is, but find it difficult to make the complete push.. We as a family have made some partial changes inspired by experiences of others.

I remember reading on SMH.com.au a letter where a reader said that he hadn't watched TV since 96 & thinks his life has been richer as he was willing to learn about the world a day late from his daily newspaper.

Another guy called Shankar talked about moving the TV to the bedroom from the Hall( or is a alternate TV) which meant some Shows wouldn't need to be watched by adults in the family room with kids around.

This got us thinking as we realised that TV keeps running in our house in the background which meant we were constantly distracted or kept postponing other things in favour of watching TV.

So as a first step we seperated the TV from the dining table & moved the TV onto a sperate TV room.
Its phenomenal how this small step has worked wonders & this was the reason why I had the early mentioned quality time with my kid happenned.

Since we don't watch TV nowadays while we dine which means we talk about our day when we eat. This also ensures that I am least unaware of what programmes are on TV in the 6.30 to 8.30 pm slot.
Since I am unaware, I don't get tempted by the trailors, which means I help my wife clean up the kitchen, the dining table etc & then I am willing to engage my kid in her new game.

So yesterday she wanted me to draw & so we drew in rough sketch a flower & its vase, sofa, herself, her elder cousin & then her younger cousin then added the , our car, our heater, slippers, cupboard, her toys etc etc.
She then went back and identified each of the drawings & repeated it with her mother. It was truly thrilling experience which I now treasure.

So its times like these TV steals from us because we are allowing it to be stealed. Hopefully there will come a day when I can banish the TV completely or atleast make it most insignificant.

As an aside, I am sure TV companies will soon be sponsoring a study about how TV viewing is good for everyone..

My limitations
It's important that I know them.

I am not an academic. I cannot use academic language. I can use mathematical language, poetic language and the odd phrase I've picked up here and there in other fields. But I'm an academic lightweight.

When I enter an argument I have a habit of wading through concepts I have only a vague idea about and not minding at the time. I regret it soon afterwards because my foolishness shines through. Nothing vague about my foolishness.

But I'm enthusiastic.

Though I've often said: enthusiam is not enough, talent is not enough. You need a balance. On that see-saw I sit very much on the ground of enthusiasm.
