Former advertising agency CEO Emily Abrera was recently elected to the board of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

Ms. Abrera replaced Manolo M. Lopez who gave up his board seat which he held for 15 years to pave the way for another independent director outside of the Lopez family.

This was announced by ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio Lopez III, who said that "Ms. Abrera brings to the board a point of view distilled from her wealth of experience and creativity in marketing, media and advertising."

The Kapuso Network Executives are currently establishing good relations with top executives from different Korean channels such as KBS, MBC and SBS. A very reliable source from GMA 7 said that the visit have created a lot of opportunities for both the Kapuso Network and the Korean stations. She hasn't divulged any information on the plans that the network executives have cooked up with their "Kapusong Koreans" yet, but she gave a very promising news.

Star Cinema of Korea heard about the visit of GMA 7 Executives. They approached them and expressed their interest to bring some of their stars here in the Philippines. They heard about the Korean wave taking the Philippines by storm and they were all excited to explore the possibilities of filming a Korean-Filipino drama series. Both parties have already come up with various projects, our source said. But GMA Network will not publicize any information until all deals have been closed. But our source gave us a few infos about one of the plans that might push through within the year. Lee Dong Gun (popularly known as "Martin" of Lovers in Paris) might visit the Philippines to personally thank the viewers who watched and supported his Koreanovelas Lovers in Paris, Sweet 18 and Stained Glass. He will be promoting his upcoming series that will be aired soon over the local boob tubes. Among these are Sangdoo, Let's Go to School (with "Justin" of Full House) and Friends (with "Andrew" of Endless Love 1: Autumn in My Heart). Both Koreanovelas we've heard, were acquired by GMA Network.

This is a good start for the Kapuso Network and its Korean partners to take the first few steps in making Asian series a bigger blast in the international market. The network may soon be visiting other neighboring countries to create more partnerships and make the Philippines part of the Asianovela fame. Earlier this year, the network has sent representatives to Los Angeles, California (L.A. Screenings), Bangkok, Thailand and Taipei, Taiwan.

In line with its launching of the much talked about Pinoy TV (GMA International Channel), our Kapuso Network is doing its best to prove the whole world what a no. 1 Filipino station is capable of doing, both locally and internationally. "Jason Hsu of 5566 is going to do a movie with Joliona Magdangal, right? Maricel waives increase to support ABS-CBN

MARICEL Soriano has waived the yearly 20-percent increase stipulated in her talent contract with ABS-CBN to show her support for the network, which has implemented cost-cutting measures to stave off losses during the first quarter of this year.

Maricel's manager, Wyngard Tracy, told Inquirer Entertainment in a phone interview on Wednesday that he volunteered not to take this year's increase during a meeting for the actress' new TV series "Vietnam Rose."

"ABS-CBN has been supportive of Maricel for so many years," Tracy said. "It's the least we could do, especially after Gabby Lopez appeared on TV saying that the network has been losing money."

But Tracy clarified that it was not a pay cut. "We just really believe in the project," he explained. "At this point, we should be helping each other."

Dolor Gueverra, Dolphy's aide, has denied this.

Guevarra told Inquirer Entertainment by phone on Monday night that Dolphy had, in fact, just signed a new contract with the network for the sitcom "Quizon Avenue," which also stars the comedian's sons Eric, Eppie and Vandolph.

Officially, Eric Quizon is Dolphy's manager. But Inquirer Entertainment could not reach Eric.

ABS-CBN's Linggit Tan, business unit head for "OK Fine... Whatever," "Quizon Avenue," "Goin' Bulilit" and "Big Brother," said that management's cost-cutting measures have not affected stars' talent fees.

"Management would tell me if there is (such an order)," Tan told Inquirer Entertainment also on Monday. "But if the stars offer to take pay cuts, why not?"


One-year contracts

Talent contracts with ABS-CBN are usually for one year, except for a few. Kris Aquino has a two-year contract, according to her manager Deo Endrinal.

"So far, there have been no changes," Endrinal told Inquirer.

Boy Abunda, who manages Ai-Ai de las Alas, said network management had not talked to him about slashing the comedian's salary.

"In fact, she has a new show and just signed a new contract," Abunda said.

Abunda, also one of the network's biggest talents, said he himself had not been asked to take a pay cut.

"So far, everything is... as is," Abunda said.

Aga Muhlach's manager, Ethel Ramos, said they had not been asked either. Aga also has a one-year contract, said Ramos, not 10 years as rumored.

The network's big talents have a monthly take-home pay of as much as P1.2 million, according to one of the managers.

Talent manager Arnold Vegafria, who has four artists with ABS-CBN, expressed confidence that the network would not renegotiate his talents' contracts.

"I have not received word from them," Vegafria told Inquirer.

On Tuesday, talent Edu Manzano also told Inquirer that he had not been asked to take a lower fee.


How news broke

The rumors started when ABS-CBN began offering early retirement packages to its regular employees in the news and public affairs division, according to Manzano.

The biggest expense of the network is on the stars' salaries, and these astronomical fees should be controlled, a talent manager who requested anonymity observed.

"Production costs are already very high," the manager said. "Stars should sacrifice in order for the shows to stay viable."

But director Joey Reyes, head writer for two shows on ABS-CBN, told Inquirer that the network had not made a move to reduce talent fees either for directors and writers.

"The streamlining affected only the news and public affairs division," he said. "It's not a massacre... it's not a case of 500 heads rolling. Regular employees in the news and public affairs were offered attractive retirement packages. Most of them accepted."

Reyes added that the early retirement package had been on the pipeline as early as January this year and did not come as a surprise to the affected employees.

MANILA (Dow Jones)--ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. (ABS.PH) director Manuel Lopez has resigned from the board of the Philippines' largest media broadcast network. The company's board named Emily Abrera as his replacement. Abrera was chairwoman of McCann Erickson Philippines Inc. for five years until 2004. ABS-CBN didn't disclose the reason for Lopez's resignation.

The board of Roxas Holdings Inc. (ROX.PH) has approved the payment of a PHP0.06 a share cash dividend to stockholders of record July 14. The dividend is payable July 29. Also approved by the board is a stock buyback program that will cover 2% of the 1.14 billion issued and outstanding shares of the Philippine investment holding company. The term of Roxas Holdings President Miguel Gaspar has also been extended until he has a successor.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PHI) will Friday list 500 shares that were issued under the company's executive stock-option plan. This will bring the number of shares issued to executives under the plan and listed on the exchange to 493,231. A total of 1.29 million shares have been set aside under the plan.

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. (ABS.PH) will Friday reduce by 80,000 the number of listed Philippine Depository Receipts after shareholders owning an equal number of PDRs exercised their right to convert them into common shares of the Philippines' largest media broadcasting network. The reduction will bring ABS-CBN's total listed PDRs to 268.4 million.
