When I have my period, I feel gassy (not kidding!). Is there something wrong with me? What can I do to minimize this?

Ira

Nothing wrong with that. You can put a hot water bag over your tummy. If that doesn't work, try Prepulsid 5 mg/tab 1 tablet 3x a day.

Ooops.. i guess this topic isn't about proper sentence punctuations.

Eww! I'm getting flashbacks of when my sisters and their friends used to babysit me and all they talked about were tampax and stuff...

..all of a sudden, i don't feel like eating.

Jepoy,

The least you and the rest of the male species can do is try be a little more understanding when the red flag is up. I have a guy friend who keeps sanitary napkin inside his globe compartment at all times for emergency purposes (no stupid, not for him but for his female friends.) Think you can do the same? :D

Soweee! Don't worry, your secrets are safe with me... am leaving now.. don't mind me.. buh bye..

Ada: Keeping napkins in my glove compartment?!?! Could you imagine the potential consequences that might lead to? What if my buddies accidentally opens my glove compartment and finds a box of tampons?!?! The ridicule, the horror! Now, if i were already married, then yes, extra Kotex in my car would be a bit more tolerable. But until then, the only napkin you'll ever find in my car will have McDonalds printed on it. Would you girls agree if i asked you to store a pair of my underwear in your glove compartment incase of an emergency? I'll take you to the store, to the doctor, buy you midol, do whatever, just don't ask me to keep sanitary napkins in my car.

Sorry girls if that sounded a bit insensitive, but it's bad enough that my sisters and my mom had me running to the store when i was younger, to buy them Kotex!
I'm still going through theraphy for that, you know.
Okay, now i'm leaving.. buh bye. ;)

Thanks Ira!

PePs and broom: Thanks for sharing. But are you serious? I suddenly feel my problem isn't as embarrassing!

Mmmkay. Now what do you all think of tampons? Have you used them, and would you recommend them? Why are they better/worse than sanitary pads? And... where do I get them? <;g>;

*ignores jepoy's stereotypically male comments* ;)

..when i have my period I get an amnesia.....

it's like I forget what I am or where am I and things like dat...

Ada
Dec 2, 1999, 09:25 AM
Jepoy: May I ask what kind of emergency would require us to have guys' underwear in our glove compartment? Your underwear wouldn't happen to undergo spontaneous underwear combustion at times, would it? ;)

Exorsister: Haven't tried tampons and probably never will. Aren't those things uncomfortable to use? And yeah, where can we buy them? Drugstores don't usually have them.

Ira

I like tampons better. They're convenient to bring because of their size, and they aren't uncomfortable--once it's worn, you literally don't feel a thing, since it doesn't move around.

Of course, you have to be careful about using it because there is a rare chance it MAY cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) if you use it continuously during your period. The higher the tampon absorbency, the higher the risk of TSS. It's caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and is a bacterial infection that my cause death. Signs are very high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and a sunburn-like rash.
Alternating napkin and tampon usage decreases this risk immensely.

I get my stocks in Galleria (JMJ Marketing 'ata yung pangalan ng store) basement, or you can find them in some PX stores, too. They're more costly than napkins, though. I prefer them personally, but hey, to each her own. :) Some people don't like using it.

Just out of curiosity, what did women use during the medieval times ??? Meron na ba napkins nun ? What about pre-napkin times ???

Ada
Dec 2, 1999, 06:34 PM
Kamats,

During the time of our grandmas when napkins were still non-existent, there was this thing called a pasador which is a piece of cloth used just like a napkin. When it got too saturated with blood, it would be washed and then re-used. I don’t know if they used the same thing during medieval times.

ira: does the string ever disappear on you??? If you're still a virgin will it break ur hymen??

*looks back at Zen* *weeenk*

Ira
Dec 3, 1999, 01:23 PM
jonny: No. The string is pretty strong, and long, and the way you insert the tampon makes it impossible for the string to "disappear" on you. The tampon's not supposed to break the hymen, because as it gets soaked and expands it becomes similar in shape to the walls of the vaginal canal, with or without the hymen.

Hmmm tampons...

Jonny

iRa: oh, that's just great.. Shouldn't tampon makers say that.. I think a lot of girls are afraid to use tampons is because they think their hymen will break...

Ira

jonny: They do add that in advertising. The thing is, broken hymens aren't really a big concern among Americans, unlike here in the Philippines. They tried promoting tampon use here in this country a few years back, and spent quite a lot explaining that tampons won't break hymens, but then it never really took off. Firstly, tampons are more expensive than napkins. Secondly, most virgins would probably feel that it's better safe than sorry.

Another question: How often would I have to change tampons? Does one change them as often as napkins, or is it a once a day deal?

Ira
Dec 6, 1999, 10:23 PM
It depends on what type of tampons you're wearing (they come in junior to super absorbency sizes). The best rule of thumb, though, would be around 6 hours. Then alternate with a sanitary pad. Check the tampon's instructions, it's always printed there.

I've tried tampons pero it's pretty hard to insert and damn hard to change. (think bloody mess). ANother thing, those suckers (no pun intended) are so expensive. I used to buy sa JMJ sa Galleria and a box costs around P180 if my memory serves me right. I would still go for napkins. :)

ehehe

i have a friend who wandered into his mom's bathroom when he was 10 years old, saw his mom inserting a tampon.

i can't forget the look on his face when he was making kwento.

i can;t bring myself to use it tuloy.

tsaka nakakatakot. i'd go by the same old SAFE napkins.

i heard na drinking beer helps daw if you're having cramps...is there any medical explanation behind this or is it just another old wives' tale?

Ira
Dec 30, 1999, 09:37 PM
Old wives' tales. Unless somebody in the past drank too much, felt numb all over her body, then realised, "wow, wala na akong cramps!" --kasi lasing na. But I believe the advice says one bottle of beer? If so, wala talagang effect.

kung may period, mag ponstan!

LuvaBaby
Jan 3, 2000, 08:21 AM
Midol is more effective...and instead of beer, u can try drinking gatorade or powerade to decrease ur stomache cramps..

about tampons, they can easily be bought in supermarkets...

I strongly suggest using the napkin..it is socially more acceptable and there are "no strings attached" ;)

LuvaBaby, which supermarkets?

clone, why do you say that napkins are more socially acceptable than tampons?

mylene
Jan 4, 2000, 11:23 PM
what you use for your mestruation is the LEAST of society's worry.
ira, when i was in high school i used to take ponstan and in 15 minutes, wala ng cramps. kaya lang, three years ago i developed an allergy to ibuprofen and mefenamic acid. at least i think it's an allergy, kasi i'd have a hard time breathing then my eyes will resemble that of garfield's. after i take benadryl, magsusubside naman ito. since then, i've been taking tylenol na lang. any drugs you know of that can help?

:o joking only ..see? "napkin" and "string".
I hope you "absorb" the meaning of this. ;)

Anyway, tama si Mylene. What you choose depends on you as long as it always works for you and gives you freedom.

But what do I really know about menstruation other than it is mensfrustration. Honestly, in this women's lib environment, the term is a misnomer. It should correctly be called womenstration...or something like that. Di ba?

mylene: There is this ob-gyne consultant in Makati Med who prescribes her patients Serrapeptase (Danzen is the local brand name in the Philippines), 1 tablet 3x a day. It's a cough/cold medicine, but surprise, it also significantly helps in period problems because it decreases inflammation. She says she has had very good feedback with that. Since it is not in the same family as ibuprofen and mefenamic acid, maybe you will not develop allergies with it. You can take Serrapeptase coupled with even just Tylenol. I can't say if you're allergic only to ibuprofen or everything under the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds, but I think serrapeptase would not trigger your hypersensitivity.

Ira

No, Danzen is a cough/cold medication, whose mechanism of action includes expectoration and decrease of inflammation. No effect on ulcers, though.
