If you are going to have a vice, coffee is probably one of the least harmful -- as long as you drink it in moderation.

Caffeine is the kick in your coffee and drinking too much of it can have noticeable effects. But, as for coffee causing serious health problems, so far the research hasn't proven any links.

Research on coffee's effects continues. Here's what is known: If there is an association between cancer and coffee, it is limited and found only at very high levels of coffee consumption.

Compounds in coffee have been linked to increased cholesterol levels, but the compounds aren't found in filtered or instant coffee.

Caffeine can intensify certain heart rhythm problems. It can also cause a temporary rise in blood pressure. People who drink four or five cups of coffee throughout the morning have slightly elevated blood pressure and higher levels of stress hormones all day and into the evening, creating a scenario in which the body acts like it is continually under stress, according to a group of Duke University Medical Center scientists.

Caffeine increases the amount of calcium excreted in your urine. This suggests that coffee may increase your risk for osteoporosis, but you'd have to drink large amounts of caffeine every day to have any noticeable impact on bone density.

Evidence that coffee can lead to fibrocystic breast changes, in which benign but painful lumps develop in your breast, appears to be weakening. However, caffeine may aggravate the condition.

Coffee also may have an effect on your nervous system, digestive system and bladder. Some problems of drinking too much coffee include nervousness, irritability, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea and bladder irritation in some people.

Daily consumption of up to 300-400 mg/day of caffeine (approximately two to three 8 oz. cups of brewed coffee) has been shown to have no adverse effects. Five would be tops.

On a personal note...I was a coffee addict when I was in school too, and used it as a way to keep me awake. In one severely stressful period (chemistry midterms), I drank 12 cups of coffee, at double the normal strength. Well, it sure did keep me awake the whole night, but let me tell you, I was like a Mexican Jumping Bean...I kept on hopping all over the house the whole time kasi hindi ako mapakali, and my heart was racing for hours. So unless you want to be like that, I suggest keeping your coffee well within the 2-3 cups per day. :)

according to men's health coffee burns fat, especially if taken in the morning before hitting the gym. recent studies also suggest that drinking 1-2 mugs of coffee a day will help prevent heart attacks.

since ur talking about coffee and caffeine, what about sodas? they do contain a lot of caffeine too right? so does that mean excessive gulping of sodas is bad for health in terms of cancer...not acidity level in the stomach ha.

Ira
Nov 18, 1999, 08:00 PM
Soda has about 1/3- 1/2 the amount of caffeine as found in normal coffee. That's the same amount found in tea, and in my personal savior in med school, Lipovitan. Caffeine does not cause cancer, so gulping soda by the liter won't cause that. It will cause you untold embarassment in regard to gas, though. Good thing you have really nice friends, MO. :D

oscarwarez: I assume the dizziness is because of the lack of oxygen in your brain. Caffeine causes constriction of the blood vessels, so overdoses can cause dizziness since the brain doesn't get as much O2 as it should. As for numbness...I must say that I never really encountered anybody complaining of that after coffee intake. Any idea, Batang Uliran?

I had a similar experience as Ira. One exam eve, I had two cups of coffee. Instead of studying, I ended up singing until the 'wee hours of the mornin' (with fake irish accent). My roommates should remember that!

My groupmates in Psychology class held an experiment on coffee and memory. Our subjects were seminarians. We had them drink coffee an hour prior to the memory test. We flashed them a series of wordcards a few seconds each. Afterwards, they were to write down all the words they could remember.

Most of them actually flunked the simple exam. Conclusion:

The seminarians were too excited and distracted to take the test. One, the coffee caused it. Two, they were restless because it was their siesta time. And three, the group of girls inside the seminary was such a novel idea for them.
They may not have remembered the words we flashed but they sure will remember our little experiment. Last we heard we were the talk of the town, er, seminary.

i dont drink coffee. is that better than taking coffee in moderation? disregarding my smoking, etc.
as for memory, i think it's better to sleep night before a test. just be sure to place your notebook or book under the pillow so you'll absorb it.
is smelling ammonia a better alternative for coffee?

Ira
Nov 30, 1999, 12:32 AM
It's been said that moderation is best, and this also holds true for drinking coffee. If you don't like it, then don't drink it. However, 1-2 cups a day will not hurt, either.

As for keeping awake using ammonia...that won't work.

caffeine is known to speed the hearbeat, increase blood pressure(sabi nga ni ira), stimulate respiration, and constrict blood vessels. it has long been used to alleviate fatigue and drowsiness, thereby promoting alertness and endurance.
atheltes: caffeine also improves atheltic performance by drawing on fat reserves for energy and by increasing motor skills of conditioned reflexes. it enhances the pain relieving effects of aspirin and acetaminophen and is found in many over the counter prescription drugs.
* not all effects of caffeine are positive. in some individuals, caffeince can cause insomnia, nervousness, irritability, and rapid heartbeat. in some individuals even one cup of coffee induces this "caffeinism".
even if you are not a coffee drinker, caffeine is a common additive in many softdrinks(na alam na nating lahat) two cans of sofdrinks contain the equivalent amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee. :)

An add-on query: Is coffee fattening? Can coffee cause mean stains on my teeth? Thanks so much. :D

Ira
Jun 17, 2000, 04:20 PM
If you take coffee without sugar nor cream, or just with Nutra-Sweet, it is not fattening at all. One cup of unsweetened coffee (6 oz.) contains only 4 calories. That's almost like drinking a can of diet soda. A cup of flavored coffee (eg General Food's flavored coffee), on the other hand, contains around 60-100 calories a cup. As for Starbucks' iced frapuccinos, which contain huge amounts of sugar, cocoa and sweetened whipped cream---well, let's not even get into that. Suffice to say that a glass will give you roughly the same amount of calories as a light meal contains.

As with a lot of types of food, coffee can cause yellowish teeth stains if you don't brush your teeth and you drink huge amounts of coffee. However, with proper dental hygiene, you don't have to worry about that occurence.

[This message has been edited by Sophocles^ (edited 06-23-2000).]

Ira

Manic depression requires that a person's episode involves the full symptomatic picture of both manic and major depressive episodes, alternating or intermixed, every few days, with prominent depressive symptoms lasting at least 1 whole day.

Generally, depression symptoms (should happen nearly daily) include: depressed mood most of the day, markedly diminished interest or pleasure in activities, significant weight gain or loss when not dieting (or change in appetite), insomnia or hypersomnia, agitation or motor retardation, fatigue or loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death.

Manic symptoms include: a distinct period of abnormally elevated mood, with at least 3 of the following symptoms: inflated self esteem, decreased need for sleep, very talkative, racing thoughts, distractablity, increase in activity or psychomotor agitation, and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities. The disturbance should be severe enought to cause impaired functioning.

Just wondering, my mother in law is a coffee fiend -- she drinks it all day, morning, noon and night, even before bed and has for years. I couldn't tell you the exact number of cups a day but I'm pretty sure it's close to 10 if not more. She's been living with a lot of illnesses for years now and from what I've read numerous times before in countless publications, it sounds like a lot of the stuff she suffers from is coffee/caffiene related. Namely things like insomnia, and frequent headaches and fatigue. Now I don't know if her doctor is aware of her coffee intake and if he is, I'm not sure why he hasn't told her to cut down. Could it be because she's taken so much for so long that she has reached a sort of point of no return wherein cutting back would actually aggravate her situation because her body's come to depend so much on it now? But then again, maybe he has told her to cut down but she just hasn't. Issues of stubbornness aside, would there be a valid reason for her doctor to overlook this as outlined in some of the questions above? I would imagine intake like hers would raise a few medical eyebrows. Your thoughts?

Ira
Jul 30, 2000, 02:53 PM
Coffee is a mild central nervous system stimulant. I think your mother-in-law has probably become psychologically (not physically) dependent on the coffee kick already. Coffee and caffeine have been extensively researched and there is no investigational evidence to suggest that as normally consumed they are harmful to humans, either in short term or long term. There is no conclusive evidence that regular coffee drinking constitutes an addiction. Any pharmacological effects of caffeine are transient, usually passing within a few hours. When regular caffeine consumption is abruptly discontinued, some individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or drowsiness, so the symptoms you cited may be due more to the fact that she wasn't taking coffee and is being grouchy, not because she took too much of it. These "withdrawal" effects usually are temporary, lasting up to a day or so, and no longterm side effects are noted. These can often be avoided if caffeine cessation is gradual or if she switches to decaff. However, your mom-in-law must of course first be willing to switch from regular to decaff.

hindi lang coffee, tea, softdrinks [& everything with caffeine] ... softdrinks, smoking, puyat, cakes, ice cream, salt ... but exercise is ok, with lots of water & a balanced diet ...

if u really love coffee, try decaf then follow with lots of water to dilute the caffeine kasi kahit decaf, merong at least 15.7 mg of caffeine [like the one served at the old manila coffee house] :)

don't worry, u'll get used to not drinking coffee :)

Check out William's Textbook of Obstetrics. It doesn't say anything about caffeine being bad for pregnant women; if it was Caffeine would have been a "classified" drug (drugs are classified from A-D for the benefit of pregnant patients; class A drugs may be taken safely during pregancy while class D drugs are definitely teratogenic-may induce malformations-in animal models).

Ira
Aug 3, 2000, 11:18 PM
You can still enjoy your favorite caffeinated drinks as long as you don't overdo it. Abundant research suggests that moderate amounts of caffeine won't harm both mother or baby during pregnancy. Researchers define moderate as 300-400 mg. of caffeine, about what you'd get in 3-4 cups of coffee or 7-9 cans of diet cola. Any more than that is questionable. Research is both confusing and inconsistent about the effects of drinking more than 3-4 cups of coffee a day, which is why experts don't always agree on how to advise pregnant women.

Though no study says <;300-400 mgs will hurt you or your unborn baby, many women limit or cut out caffeine anyway, often with the blessing of their ob-gyne. Studies have linked miscarriage, low birthweight, and birth defects such as cleft palate to large amounts of caffeine. But much of these research failed to take into account other concomittant risk factors like smoking and alcohol, which can also lead to complications in pregnancy. All researches agree though that if caffeine is risky, it's only a problem in very large amounts.

Caffeine has been linked to lowering a woman's chance of conceiving. It is thought that the stimulant in coffee affects a woman's ovulation because it changes hormone levels, which directly affect trying to conceive. But in fairness, caffeine has been studied exhaustively for its potential in causing everything from cancer to mental problems, and there is nothing to link moderate consumption of coffee (less than 4 cups a day) with any disease or disorder. If you're really worried, stick to decaff or limit your coffee intake to 1-2 cups daily.

I had this breakfast meeting in one of the restaurants in tomas morato and because it was raining so hard and it was cold inside the resto,i ordered a cup of coffee (it was so matapang, actually). and because it was really cold inside, i ordered another one. maybe after 30 minutes, i noticed that my heart was beating really fast (heart palpitations?).
and talagang sobra and nanginginig ako ng konti tapos i noticed that i was talking so fast and my tongue was somewhat affected (nangagatal din but not because of the cold weather). yap, medyo bumilis ang pag-iisip ko. i accomplished a lot of things that day but the heart beat was really fast and i began feeling uneasy. the palpitation slowed down maybe after seven hours but i still have an out of normal situation. hanggang sa natulog nalang ako. i woke up in the middle of the night because i felt that I "forgot" or i "couldn't breathe. buti nalang when i woke up the next day. it was all gone.

did i take much amount of coffee? i may confess, that i was a coffee drinker way back and i just cut drinking coffee about a year and a half ago. i could even drink up to four cups of coffee a day then but nothing like this happened.

i am just curious because that was the first time it happened to me. hindi na ba ako dapt mag-coffee? pls. help!

Ira
Feb 23, 2001, 01:14 AM
Sounds like a caffeine overdose to me. :) The amount of caffeine per cup is of course dependent on the strength of the brew. You may have been a coffee drinker before, but it might be that your system has already adapted to much less caffeine when you cut down, and the coffee they served you just had too much caffeine for your system to handle. It's not a sign that you should stop drinking coffee altogether; just that maybe you shouldn't drink too much of it if your system isn't used to caffeine anymore.

why are pregnant women advised not to take caffeinated beverages?

Ira
Jul 31, 2001, 08:09 AM
It's because caffeine : 1.) is a diuretic. When you're pregnant, you need a lot of fluid to replenish the amniotic fluid supply and maintain the maternal-fetal circulation. 2.) is a stimulant. It deprives the mother of much-needed sleep and increases her heart rate, which puts stress on the baby. 3.) can cause heartburns. A lot of pregnant women experience heartburns, and coffee makes it worse. 4.) can pass to the baby through the placenta, causing caffeine dependence increased heart rate, and decreased respiration. 5.) can hamper iron absorption, causing anemia. 6.) is associated by some studies with SIDS, miscarriage, low birthweight, and birth defects such as cleft palate.

As has already been mentioned above, it's the calories that make you fat. If you don't put sugar, cream, syrup, or any calorie-laden ingredient, you won't take in calories. Coffee does not make your stomach bigger. It's the calories and lack of exercise.

yes, specially the 3-in-1 kasi may sugar and cream. i am chubby because addicted ako rito. i can drink 4 cups daily (not much compared to other coffee addicts)
if it is black coffee, without any sugar or milk,(AY! ang pait!) very minimal lang ang calories nun. but who would take only black coffee without sugar?

I do.

No calories, no big belly and it keeps me awake while driving after a 28 hour call.

same here.. i always have black coffee.. Dati, coffee with cream and sugar.. but when i started to lessen my sugar intake, the more i appreciate black coffee.. once in a while, i put a little of honey to sweeten it .. pero yung taste buds ko now medyo awkward na sa coffee with cream and sugar

If you have issues with insomnia, avoid coffee. I've advised several coffee drinkers with insomnia issues to stop drinking coffee and eventually they were able to resume restful sleep again.

i do. this is the only way i drink my coffee. anything else you add to it spoils the flavor.

for me its the other way around. coffee helps me get some good sleep at night. i look forward to a good cup of joe before getting some shut eye.
