i don't understand the appeal of animes such as daimos and voltes 5, but here's some reasons why i like animes (namely evangelion, *******!!, rurouni kenshin, dragonball):
- good drawings
- cool characters/cool char. designs
- intro music! im a jpop fanatic eh :D
also, most animes have an interesting storyline (as compared to american cartoons which have no storyline at all). and some animes also tackle controversial issues (like ghost in the shell and blue submarine). in short, animes just plain rule!!! :D

for me, the biggest thing about anime is the fact that it tackles issues that are not normally tackled in most animated shows, movies or whatever.
take for example the death of Rick hunter's big brother in Macross.. now in other shows, you do not see those portrayed.. sure, it is anime.. but it is nonetheless dramatically touchign due to the way it is presented..
there are also animes which tackle environmentalism (Nausicaa), exploitation (mononokehime) and many others..

the stories. downright touching to ultimato silly, angst-ridden to joy. it has everything that imagination can dream up of without coming across as unbelievable, stuff that real movies would be hard-pressed to emulate or replicate.
the voices & the songs. i luv anime music.

assassin_mage, marunong ka ng nihonggo? :D
summarize ko lang sinabi nila:
well for me i luv anime becoz
-they have a different storyline for each.
*school life (Ranma 1/2, etc.)
*just-about-everyday (Ranma 1/2, etc.)
*historical (Rurouni Kenshin)
*goal concept (DragonBall Z, YuYu Hakusho, etc.)
*story plot with nice twists b(Rayearth, Five Star Stories, DNA2)
*original story settings (Nausicaa, Pokemon)
*dramatic story lines, ones that can make you cry (Nausicaa din !!)
*fantasy/medieval story settings (Slayers)
*lots pa ...
plus, the detail and intricacy of the drawings, especially the mecha anime (Gundam Wing, Vision of Escaflowne, Rayearth, etc.) are simply unparalleled.
<;off topic>;
ako nga i've been doing my own manga characters since college pa. i just didn't have time to improve on my drawings pa.
anyone seen the Angel Ace Manga? it's kinda cool. pinoy nga ba gumawa non?

quentin: yup.. I know nihongo.. it comes with my work..
tabel: yupp.. Ilike mylene.. I think the one who does her singing is Chie Kajiura, she is the one who sang the song "Dakedo beybi!!" which is one cool song.. :D
Basara? yup.. the characterization is good.. especially if you listen to the short drama from the Firebomber single
featuring Basara Nekki... the single I think contains the song "Seventh moon" and "My soul for you" BTW.. "My soul for you" is my favorite.. if you want to check it out.. look for the serial number for that album.. it is VIDL-10558
Released by Victor Music..

If you don't like the robot anime, try Rouronin Kenshin (Samurai X). Galing! :) For more serious(pero more gory) action, look for the OVA... bloodfest in drawing... :D
I would like to honestly say that ang appeal din nila is in the way the women are drawn... grabe ang ganda... the action is also great... sometimes nga lang... too fast.. you wind up with eye strain trying to watch a very bad copy of the anime... :D

There's a common misconception that anime are just for kids and that they're pointless violent, bloodbaths... Most people don't realize that anime features have themes, messages and stories that are as heavy or heavier than most full-length, live-action films.
Take Neon Genesis Evangelion as an example. It's a mixture of conflict between good and evil, man and himself, man against nature and etc. It is also taking a look at some philosophical views such as existentialism or "being". These themes also show up in Ghost in The Shell, A Wind Named Amnesia and etc.
One might answer with "What about Schindler's List?" Well, what about it? Anime has Grave of the Fireflies. In my opinion, that was much deeper than Schindler's, and reviews by the usual Hollywood critics also reflect the same sentiments. It's portrayal of the war was very personal and moving. The emotions flying around in that movie were spellbinding in their capacity to hold you captivated and stunned by the byplay of the characters.
If you're looking at the more mainstream anime, I can tell you that Ruruoni Kenshin is more than just a fighting 'cartoon'. If you've seen the OAVs, you'll know that the lead star's past was riddled with hardship and pain. His journey in the series is how he copes with and makes up for all the suffering he has caused and experienced in return. Can you compare that to the non-brainwashing and 'mature' shows like... oh... Baywatch?
What's wrong with Japanese culture anyway? It's heavily steeped in courtesy, respect and personal honor. Honestly speaking, I wish more of this culture would seep into ours.
oh yeah, get a new keyboard. sira ata yung sayo...

true! where can you find a culture that maintained it's traditional clothing for EVERYDAY in more than a millenium! only here in Asia esp Japan & China!
kimonos are still part of Japanese everyday clothing which you would see in major urban districts there. im quoting someone if i say it's like seeing people in Victorian outfits as everyday clothing strolling along in the middle of London!!

Anime, to most people here in the Philippines, is just a current fad going on. Remember the Pokemon fad, or even the Tamagotchi fad? It will eventually phase out & all that will remain are the true diehard anime fans that take it seriously. As for me, I've been way into anime since I was 5 years old, & I wasn't even growing up in the Philippines at this time. Battleship Yamato & Macross was my manna at that time & so wasCaptain Tsubasa. I'm still a diehard anime fan since then & I have come across a lot of fads from the different countries I've been to, so all in all, anime is just a fad in this country right now. It'll die down soon.

empoy kapangpagan that's a really interesting nic ... either intentionally spelled that way or a typo on "kapampangan". Oh well. You know what dude, if u ask the same question in a foreign board to westerners that are into anime, u'll probably get flamed or get a verbal lickin' way worse than what you're getting here. They'll all come up with a million reasons why they like anime. Anime has always been a part of Philippine life, as you yourself may have experienced watching Voltron or Transformers. Only recently did anime emerge as "anime". Years ago, we just knew that some of the "cartoon" shows out there like YuYu Hakusho were good. We liked it not because it was "anime", but because it had elements that made them fun and interesting. Depending on the person watching it, it appealed to us for different reasons. Maybe it had a kick-a$$ storyline, good art or lots of action etc. And because a lot of anime is just plain good, we just plain like it. We are attracted to things we think are good. If it's good, we watch it, if it sucks a$$ we do more productive things. So really man, we ain't gettin' brainwashed .... oh let me revise that and say it in proper English free from the brainwashing effects of the American hip-hop culture ..... we're not getting brainwashed. We're simply watching what appeals to us, just like any person who would watch lousy hollywood teen movies or boring soap operas. Decades ago, our grandparents were saying that our parents were getting brainwashed by rock n roll and following the devil. Well, you're saying virtually the same thing. These days, with CN, American kids are getting minimal exposure to anime, but man are they going crazy about this stuff. Believe me, it's not as serious being influenced by anime in the Philippines than it is in America, because we've always been exposed to Japanese culture, though teensy it may be. Heck, you wont see any Filipino kids jumping off from buildings because they think they could fly like Goku, right? Unlike in the States......

Between the soap oeras and shiznit drama shows plaguing our networks- anime offers a better alternative
namely:

2) Intelligent storyline (hmmm- except for a few :D like DBZ)

hey... no fair!! i grew up in the philippines (and will probably stay) but i really like anime... i was introduced to it when i was about 6 or so when the "classical books" anime started appearing, and that was way bfor anime became a fad in the late 1990's (about 1998 or so?). yes, maybe anime is just a fad right now, but what of the pirated stuff? i think der gonna keep promoting anime else they go bust. i'll probably go bust too. :hopeless:
besides, fad or not fad, anime is a whole lot of fun to watch. *okay*

Anime has its own kind of appeal. For one, it deals with diverse subjects and it is not ALL "just for kids". Like the other posts here mentioned, anime is attractive because EVERYONE can relate to it in one form or another.
Whether one likes anime or not is irrelevant, since everyone is entitled to his own preferences. I can't find any relevance or point to the Filipino soap operas and telenovelas being shown here, but still so many people watch them. THAT IS THEIR OWN CHOICE. You won't be able to stop us from continuing to watch and supporting anime just as much as we can't do anything about your seeming dislke of it.
As the cliche goes, "To each his own..." :)

I like to draw. Darn I don't now, but still I admire Japanese artwork. I dreamed of becoming a cartoonist when I was in elementary and high school. Isa pa tignan mo naman ang kwento. Original talaga. Makakakita ka ba ng cartoons sa US na may characters who become animals or nagiiba ng sex pag nabubuhusan ng cold/hot water? Sobrang nakakatawa ang humor at may aral din naman. I don't think we (ok maybe most of us he he) are brainwashed. It's one thing to be a major fan, it's another to actually live like an anime character

change the verb. make that 'fascinated'.
i like anime because, for one, the Japanese really put quality in them moving pictures. to them it is like an art that has to be perfected to a superior degree. much like how they treat flower-arranging and martial arts. plus, the story. man, name one NATIVE AMERICAN ANIMATED CARTOON that has a truly deep and equally fascinating storyline. if you can name one, i can name seven.

Hay! man you just said my point out loud. So it boils back to the question... whats wrong with being expose to Anime?
As for the culture thing I mean tradition can you emphasize any true Filipino tradition that we are still practicing today. I mean the non-shared ones not from America or Spain.
Coz when I mean "Americanize" we want to be like them in a sense. Easy life, The non-commited life... you know the out-going, the traveling type. Forget your problems with a trip, leave your family and stuff like that... You know being Americanize.

And I bet, Whilce can make good animation too. I just think na, iba yung style nila. Filipino animation looks alot like the one's here in the US.

personally, i've seen some anime shows and i like the songs, as much as i don't understand them, they are really catchy. I also like the visuals, the background and the character presentations are really nice, they make you want to stay in front of the TV for a long time :)

tough one (for me)... Hindi lang yung quality, story, chars, etc... ang gusto ko...the one that actually attracted me to watch anime is an unexplainable feeling i fell whenever i watch anime... Not to mention the songs which are really catchy and can actually ease your mood and relaxes you before you stare into some bloody action (w/c makes the chars soooooo cool!)
outtadisworld talaga...
Kaya siguro mahirap alisin ang titig natin sa t.v. lalo na pag anime ang palabas...

Ano meron sa Anime?
Art
Kasi pag may art ay merong
Substance
Kasi pag may substance ay merong
Sense
Kaya Anime kicks A.S.S. !
Japanese seiyuu are multi talented, not only with vocal characterization ang kaya nila but they can also sing.
Weiss Kreuz is one good example and the legendary
Kageyama Hironobu.
for me, he's the King of Anime music kasi from the oldest mech anime sya na ang kumakanta ng mga theme ,sa Dragonball Z at sa Hikari Sentai Maskman.

The way it defies the norm of what animation is supposed to be. I've liked animation since birth. The way anime is different from the term cartoons is reason enough why it is so excellent, and popular.

Nabuhay itong thread na ito a.
I like anime because of its V-A-R-I-E-T-Y...:D
For every Lupin, there's a Robotech...
For every hentai, there's Boys Be, Fushigi etc....
For every DBZ, Yu-Yu, Rk, there's Slam Dunk, Battleball, etc....
For every Ranma 1/2, there's Now and Then and Cowboy Bebop etc.
For every Crayon Shin-chan, there's Evangelion....
I think every genre has been represented already!

for me, it's Anime's sense of reality na suppressed by American cartoons.

i remember i did noong bata ako... i remember that episode of Astroboy, when Astroboy had a girlfriend only to find out that she's a walking time bomb and to disarm it, she should be dismantled. naiyak ako nun habang binbaklas yung girl na robot. and that's the only episode i completely remember. bata pa naman ako nun eh mga 4 or 5 ata ako nun.http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/kao/chika/chirol_gurug.gif

Personally i don't find their stroies different from one another... even the characters of different animes have a very visible similarity from each other. Para ngang isa lang ang nag draw ng mga ito eh

all the gorgeous babe with large boobs
and small waist line ----> NOT
what i like bout them aside from the colorful presentation is the story, the way they capture everyday life, though i also like fiction, it's like having cartoons for teen to adults.
