View Full Version : Can Foreign Nationals work?

I'm a foreign citizen, and I will be spending a semester in the Philippines to "slow down the world" for a few months.

Kaso lang, I don't want to just experience any sort of boredom while i'm there. Maybe I can take a part time job to pass the hours in between my socializing, watching basketball games at the Makati Coliseum, hitting the beaches, etc...

So I figure that taking a part time job would allow me to interact with all sorts of people and make some money in the process. Actually, screw the money, I don't really even care about the pay. It will just be a perk.

Any ideas? Does citizenship matter? If it does, I will probably apply for a dual citizenship.

If so, does anyone know of any places that are hiring in the greenbelt area? As long as i'm not locked up in a room by myself I open to the suggestion.

P.S. : would anybody know if any of the universities in Manila would allow me to sign up for classes without being enrolled as an ACTUAL university student?

Citizenship does matter, as foreign nationals intending to work in the Philippines need an Alien Employment Permit from the Department of Labor and Employment. I don't know what is easier for you, though - to apply for dual citizenship or to get the permit.

why don't you apply for dual citizenship first? after that you won't find any hassle since you will be considered a Filipino already. but take note that the unemployment rate in the Philippines is one of the highest, i have some friends who are cumlaudes but don't have jobs.

as for your plans of enrolling, I think it's impossible. universities won't allow you to attend classes as a sit-in student unless you are actually enrolled because they will be asking for your registration form along with your class card on your first day in school. aside from that, you still have to take the entrance exams for college. my suggestion is why not just enroll on a technical course like crash courses in computer? i think you'll have chances of getting in.

Thanks for your help you guys. Maybe I should just apply for a dual citizenship... but then i'm worried about some things which i'm not really too knowledgeable about... i.e. taxes, rights, etc.,.

Hmm, i'm wondering then if the professors there would mind if I show up for a class or two to "audit" it. I.E. what highschool students do when they're visiting one of their college choices to get more of a "feel" for the Uni.
