hi bridget_jones, i've been in this field for 15 years already. I should say that this i'm happy with this field since I can talk and meet a lot of people. Challenging din dahil hindi routine and work.

i think you should set up a supply and demand committee, where in you can meet say once a week to study the need of production and things you need to purchase. in this committee normally kasama dito ang purchasing, inventory and production. kasi ang tatlong dept na ito ang nakaka apekto sa bawat isa. dapat kasi ay magaling din ang inyong inventory dept para magkaroon ng magandang stock level. kasi kung poor ang inventory dept medyo ito ang magiging problema nyo.

i hope nakatulong ako sa yo.

What is the difference between "purchasing people" and buyers?

It's easy to purchase people as long as you have the money to buy them.

hi bridget!

i was a fresh grad then when I was hired by a QSR company... the "best" qsr here in the Philippines (now you have a clue, ayt?)

i never thought that I'd really choose this job over the others since other companies, mostly FMCGs and technology related companies, are giving me offers as well but for otehr positions.

what made me choose the job is my interest in supply chain management. i had my ojt in a softdrinks company before which raised my interest in scm since i was with the logistics department.

what i like about the job is the opportunity to meet lots of people and the responsibilities that goes with my job.

oh, by the way, i am a buyer. my responsibilities include the management of the 3 important elements in purchasing: supply management, cost management, and supplier management.

i'm currently on my 5th month here. and so far i'd be able to say that i have already experienced the best and the worst scenarios of the job.

the most difficult was when we had a supply shortage of a certain item when the unexpected typhoon hit the major supply source last January. since the supply is short, the prices shot up dramatically. i had to look for other sources of this item. i went to divisoria and other possible sources. in the end, i opted to import the much needed item. when it was released by from the port, i had to personally inspect it, of course with a representative form our technical/r&d department. i went inside the container van to see it. well that was my first time to go in a refrigerated container van. although i felt like i was gonna ****, since the item has a pungent odor, i also felt good since i was able to secure the items that will be used by the production department. and that was one of the best moments so far of my job.

here in our company, we are given the chance to recommend improvements on our current purchasing processes. most initiatives, especially the ones that could improve/decrease costs, are always being considered.

with the problem that you are currently experiencing, what you really need is to manage your suppliers more effectively. you have to drive them to deliver your items on time, every time.

in this kind of job, effective communication, being "barat/kuripot" :D and being resourceful, are key.

Hi! I'm currently a buyer for one of the leading retailers here in the Philippines. Just to clarify, the term "purchasers" is used generally to refer to people who buy goods and/or services that will be used by their companies. "Buyers", on the otherhand, are people who buy things for resale. Both still determine the best item at the best possible price et. al.

What I love most about my job (since I belong to the Fresh department) is it's fast-paced nature of work, the challenges that comes along with it and the fact that I get to meet the decision makers of the companies. At syempre, masaya pag Christmas =) Downside of the job is that even if it's a Monday to Friday job, stores still call on weekends lalo na if may delivery problems etc etc. I need the physical stamina to keep up with the job's demands. I can't just sit down and be complacent, parati kaming concerned with margins and profits. Mataas ang stress level talaga....

Briget Jones - I’m also in purchasing for 8 years now. 3 years in Pinas and 5 years in Sydney. Your problem can easily be solved by the proper use of mrp. If your company doesn’t use an ERP yet you can create one in a spreadsheet. If you really want to pursue this career, I suggest you take up some short courses in materials planning and purchasing. Check mo yung website ng Philippine Institute of Supply Management. Sila yung nag bibigay ng seminars and trainings. Pwede ka ring mag pa certify as CPM (Certified Purchasing Manager). Malayo na rin ang narating ng purchasing profession. From regular clerical duties of re-ordering stocks to what is now known as supply chain professionals. Na recognize na din kasi ng lahat ng industries na sobrang laki ang ma ge-generate na saving if you can manage your inventory properly. I took up an 8-module Purchasing Management course dito sa Sydney at an dami kong natutunan. From negotiation to materials planning, international purchasing, contracting, supplier management etc..

Ang ayaw ko lang sa Pinas ay yung stigma nakadikit sa title na purchaser na corrupt at may patong na 5 percent. I’m sure you are aware of this dark side of purchasing.

as for me, the terms "buyer" and "purchaser" doesn't have any difference. other terms that can be used are "procurement officer" or "procurement specialist" or "purchasing officer".

san nga pala ang source nyo ng... at ng... haha.. mag-source daw ba? i guess your either belong to a qsr company or a supermarket chain...

:D
