The Department of Social Welfare and Development has identified 161 children and youths that have been orphaned by the tragedy in Guinsaugon, Southern Leyte. Of the 161 orphans, 67 have been already assured of finishing their college degrees through a grant from a Taiwanese Foundation and another anonymous benefactor. The remaining 94 orphaned students with ages ranging from 10-14 years old are in need of the same assurance. Together, we can give them the same opportunity.

This is not the first time that Children’s Hour has assisted in providing for the educational needs of our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Since 2003, we have been supporting the PGMA Educational Assistance Program for the Payatas Tragedy Victims. For this SY alone, 56 children stand to benefit from the collective effort of Children’s Hour and our generous donors.

This year, DSWD has tapped Children’s Hour once again in making sure that the children of St. Bernard finish at least their secondary education. By putting up an educational trust fund for the remaining 94 orphans, the viability of this educational assistance program will be guaranteed. We have tapped the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) to be the conduit organization that will spearhead the administration, monitoring, and evaluation of this program.

As of May 2006, an initial seed amount of P 216,500.00 from various individuals and organizations has already been earmarked by Children’s Hour for the recovery and rehabilitation of the children of St. Bernard. We firmly believe that there is no better path to recovery other than that of educating them and giving them a chance to lead better lives. As we continue to fundraise for the children of Leyte, we invite you to join us in this humble mission.

Below is a breakdown of the cost of providing a year’s worth of education in the public education system in either the elementary and high school level.

Budget Line Items (Based on DSWD Costings)

Registration Fees - P200.00
School Uniforms - P500.00
Books & Reading Materials- P300.00
School Projects- P600.00
Basic School Supplies- P600.00
Daily Allowance (200 days)- P6,000.00
Miscellaneous - P500.00

Annual Cost of Education = P8,700.00

We would need to build up approximately SEVEN MILLION PESOS (P7,000,000.00) to see through the education of our 94 orphans over a period of 8 years.

Not only are we helping them recover; we are giving them the priceless opportunity to determine their lives. What they stand to learn from our gift shall remain with them long after all the food, medicine, clothing and shelter have been consumed and utilized.
