RP call centers open to giving employees stock options

PUBLICLY listed offshore call center operations in the Philippine are open to giving stock options to Filipino employees.
PeopleSupport, currently operating one of the biggest call centers in the Philippines, has in fact been giving stock options to employees regardless of rank, said Bong Borja, PeopleSupport Philippines president and Global Operations vice-president.

Borja is also president of the Call Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP) and the Business Process Association of the Philippines.

"Giving stock options is a company-specific decision, and is sometimes used by companies as an employee benefit. As such, some companies may opt to give other benefits instead of [stock] options. However, we at PeopleSupport already provide stock options to our own employees," he said.

The executive said that stock options given to employees vary according to position, performance, and tenure.

Offering stock options has created a "positive impact" on offshore operations in the country, Borja said. "It is definitely a differentiator."

Cebu Representative Eduardo Gullas had urged offshore call center operators in the Philippines and other business process outsourcing contractors affiliated with large publicly listed foreign corporations to consider offering their Filipino employees stock-based compensation.

"The grant of length-of-service-based employee stock option plans could possibly be one way by which the call center operators may retain their employees for longer periods," Gullas said in a statement.

A significant concern among local call center operators is the rapid turnover of employees, particularly customer relationship agents who are mostly young and fresh out of college, the Cebu representative said.

He also noted that many local call centers here are subsidiaries of large corporations publicly listed in the United States, including
Sykes Enterprises Inc., Convergys Corp., PeopleSupport Inc., and ICT Group Inc., all of them listed either at the New York Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ stock market.

Jojo Uligan, CCAP executive director however believes that offering stock options to Filipino employees won't solve the high turnover rate in call centers.

"I don't think [stock options] is the issue. Most of the call center agents who resign do so because of health problems, problems with schedules, and sad to say, for higher pay [in rival firms]," Uligan said.

Uligan agreed with Borja that offering stock options to Filipino employees is a decision companies have to make.

"Some offer it as an incentive but not all employees are given one. They are often given to managers to drive their productivity. For Philippine-based offshore call centers, I'm sure they are giving something to their employees, be it stock options or other additional benefits. Companies as big as PeopleSupport give a lot to their employees, or shall I say [they give back] blessings to their employees," Uligan said.

Florida-based Sykes has 17,130 employees worldwide, with over 6,000, or 40 percent, based in the Philippines. Ohio-based Convergys has 66,300 workers across the globe, and 5,300, about 8% percent, are Filipinos. California-based PeopleSupport, whose global operation is based in the Philippines, has all its 3,800 employees in the country, except for some officers in its US head office. PeopleSupport's Pennsylvania-based ICT Group has 13,850 workers worldwide, with 1,400 working in the Philippines.

Gullas is also currently pushing several bills seeking to develop the Philippine outsourcing industry. One measure seeks to boost the English competency of students in order to get more Filipinos fully qualified to eventually work in call centers and other segments of the BPO industry.

Another bill seeks to repeal the antiquated Labor Code provision barring women from working at night without prior approval from the Department of Labor and Employment. Many call center employees are women.

Citing government figures, Gullas says the booming BPO industry now employs 134,250 Filipinos. The Department of Trade and Industry expects BPO contractors to fully engage as many as 800,000 Filipino workers by 2010, he added.

Meanwhile CCAP's Borja said that the total number of call center seats is expected to hit 57,000 by end of 2005.

Computer giant Dell Inc. recently announced that its global customer support center would open soon in Manila.

Even joined the PS basketball team, PS Pioneers, last year while wearing the number two jersey(talo nga lang kami). Sadly, I had to quit the job for some health reasons. I miss my friends from Esupport and hosting. Those people were great. Made my stay worthwhile.

Hi everyone.
i'd just transferred from D call center in 32/f of PBCom Makati to People Support center and gladly i'm delegated to travel account;

Rigid ang training....6 weeks to be exact.


Any tips para makatagal sa travel account? :)

^madali lang yung exam. english comprehension, tapos listening skills, tapos typing exam. correct me if i'm wrong. right away you'll know if u make it or not in each of the exams. assuming u take the exam in the morning, and pass all of them, you'll be asked to return in the afternoon for the final interview. basta ma-contact ang mga character references mo, u should get a job offer in a day or two. :) kung di ma-contact, hihingi sila ng alternate reference. that's why it took me about a week between final interview and job offer.

you can just go there and take ur phone interview. ideal time would be 8 am para kung pasado ka eh makakasabay ka sa examinees ng 930 am. ganda pa nung administrator.. hhaaayyyy

if you worked for a CC before and member sya ng CCAP then malamang na di ka nga ma-hire dahil dyan sa clause na yan. oh well, you can always try working for some other call center that can give you a much higher salary i.e. convergys, etc. or bakasyon ka ng 6 months tapos try mo ulit apply. :)

I also don't think CVG accepts peeps who are under non-compete clause. I came there anyway.:D I actually regret leaving CVG. My call center sucks big time now. I will tell you guys in time what it is. This has been a nightmare experience for me.:(

Btw, I actually know the clause, and I thought before that I will be staying here for good, but I was really wrong. My company really sucks.

for clearance, pwede rin ang helpdesk analysts. just look for the most senior analyst in each shift.

I've heard that helpdesk will have one or two openings in the days (weeks?) to come. Wait for the announcement/s from HR.

let me point out that once you have resigned...the contract that you've signed with PS becomes null and invalid, you can pretty much say all u want about the business and all that matters...
It's just a question of principle.

Hello to everyone!

I was an agent with PS for its travel account. My stay lasted 8 months. PS was my first call center job. It was tough for me, but somehow I managed to pass training and got regularized. To a certain extent, I also acquired some competency.

But I had to leave because my health was suffering -- mentally and physically. It was a hard decision because I've already invested a lot and was actually seriously considering a long-term career with the company.

I have nothing against PS or any other call center, but I think that call centers in the Philippines need to seriously think about the mental and physical cost of maintaining their operations to a generation of Filipinos. This is not an original theme. If you look at the experience of Indian call centers, they have a high attrition rate due to the stress of the job. And since India is now picking up economically, college graduates now have other job options aside from call centers. And they readily hang up their headsets for other more satisfying and less stressful jobs.

Questions: Do you you are being compensated enough given the stress that you have to endure due to the unholy hours of work and the pressured work environment? In the end, was it really a growth experience for you, or were you just tools for the company's growth? Are Filipino call center agents faring well compared to other call centers in the world? Are call center agents, for that matter, faring well compared to the companies they work for? Are the supposed perks of working in call centers really worth the stress of the job? Or are we into it simply because we do not have a choice?

Industry reports say that there are 40,000 call center jobs waiting to be filled up. This probably accounts for more than 80% of all jobs available in the country today. Is this good or is this deplorable?

Theser are just some thoughts that come to my mind when I try to make sense of my call center experience. I really would like to know what other agents have experienced and what their thoughts are on this matter.

hello newbie here..ask lang some questions. I applied thru PS site and the next day I received a phone interview (Nov 18,2005), then the interviewer told me that they will call back the next day but they did'nt.

Is my intention of applying still on initial process?
I told the interviewer that my availability will be on jan 2006 since I have my present job up dec 2005, do you think this affects kaya di na sila tumawag ulit?
How long will i wait for their response?
Is it wise to have a career move in a cc job. considering sa lahat naman ng work my politics and intrigues?

yung final interview ko, babae sya..maliit lang. nakita ko pa nga sya sa cafeteria after the interview. i smiled pero di talaga sya ngumingiti.

akala ko lahat ng CC ganun ang approach. but hinde eh. i applied to etelecare & epacific, i must say, the people are friendly and willing to help you. like yung TL ng isang team sa epacific, nung final interview ko, she asked me ano favorite kong TV prog. pareho pala kami. amazing race. from there, nakipag-communicate na ako.

I came from the relay type of call center, so the 60 wpm is not really a problem for me. 60 wpm was also our basic requirement. im just curious if they offer the same premium as the relay people (20k++ basic), and if they do since that a new account, im doubly interested. thank you so much for any information you can give us.

I submitted my application online and I received a call from PS 2 days after. After the surpise phone interview, I'm scheduled to take the exam tomorrow. The lady who called me up told me that the exam has 3 parts: English proficiency, a listening test, and a typing test. Any tips on these 3 parts? I'm nervous because it's my first time to take a qualifying exam for a call center position.

By the way, when exams are held, how many examinees are usually taking the exam? When will they tell the results? Do undergrads really have the chance of being hired at PS as a CSR?
