think about hooking up an IV fluid to its IV stand which is approximately 1 meter from the insertion site... height is a factor..
or how about assisting a 6'5" footer surgeon in the OR, and your height is only waist a high of that of the surgeon, where everything below the surgeon's waist is considered unsterile...height is a factor

height requirement ....... only in the Philippines. We are discriminatory.
In the US, no such thing as too short or too little to be a nurse. Remember, EOE, Equal Opportunity Employment.
You can find a job sa US.

The IV pole is adjustable so that shouldn't be a problem.
I don't think there's a lot of 6'5" surgeons since the average American height is only 5'10"... and there's nothing wrong with standing on a step stool if you need a little lift ;) - that's what some surgeons do when they perform a gastric bypass on a mountainous body on the operating table.
This height requirement is absurd.

That's not true. Let's be honest: Most people are majoring in nursing so they can go to the US. Height is not an issue in nursing schools in the US, why should it be a problem in the Philippines?
And BTW, the bedside table is adjustable. The bed is adjustable. And they now have inflatable beds to transfer patients. So to all 'short' people out there, don't lose hope *okay*

^ Thats not true!
Kumukuha sila ng kulang sa height dahil deserving yung candidate not because napilitan sila.

Lol! Kung emergency yan, every member of the MDT is there, lahat ng Nurses andun, magtutulong tulong. Kung magisa ka naman and you need to lift a patient, ano ginagawa ng buzzer? And, just to let you know, you dont need to lift alone, bawal sa manual handling gudelines yan, pag may nangyari sa back mo, demanda mo ang Hospital! or if you neet to lift a heavy thing, as in emergency? meron ba nun? eh di call for a porter, or a colleague. Ganun lang kasimple yun!

Dec 26, 2006, 10:10 AM
My grandmother is 5 flat and she got by splendidly as a nurse. If there are problems lifting the patient, then you ask help from the nursing assistant. Seriously, Ive always felt there's a bit of confusion between the roles of nurses, caregivers, nursing assistants and other allied medical disciplines. It's like people think all they do is carry people and wipe their brows or something.
Oh, and I didn't know there was a height requirement just to enter nursing school. And people wonder why our tertiary educational system is going down the drain; too much is given to image rather than competence. :)

Ngee, sa Silliman wala naman ah. Although ngayon, part na sa screening ang how you carry yourself kaya tinitingnan nila kung pano maglakad ang students hehe :D
Although I heard may height requiremnt nga daw dati, for lifting and assisting purposes, but I think they've snapped out of it and realized that skills are more important than height. :D

Height is a requirement because their profession requires nurses to perform some physically demanding tasks when dealing with patients. Especially if you would like to be employed abroad where people are quite bigger.

it doesn't matter if you're petite, as long as u have the knowledge & experience... after all, nursing is caring.
(the truth is) way way back, height really matters in nursing... but not now!... connecting to the laxity of the course, noon raw talagang pinipiga ang mga student nurses... unlike now, medyo maluwag na sa rules.

In medical city they have a height requirement which is 5'2" for the girls.
-=[bAbY_meX]=-
Mar 31, 2007, 10:13 PM
Of course there is no direct correlation between skill and height. Rules are just rules, it's not enough rationalizing that what's more important is the skill and not the appearance.

Apr 12, 2007, 08:04 PM
according to the teachers i know sa st. mary's tanggap na talaga ang mga maliliit. siguro meron nga lang talagang other institution na mahigpit sa height requirement.
about the dextrose, di ba sa nursing may comfort measures? so ok lang maliit. if the small/ petite nurse can't carry a patient or client, he can ask for help naman.
way back, ang mga maliliit ay destined lang sa nursery section of the hospital. di sila pwede sa ER, OB, et al...
yup! skills, intelligence, & appearance are all necessary. the teachers even emphasized na ok lang na ur fugly, as long as ur neat... esp. clean/ short nails & short hair. the girls should make tali their hair & have some make up for them not look sadako or what since their wearing white. the boys need to have proper haircut. rationale kasi, mahirap pag nalaglag ang strand ng buhok sa delicate patients.

IMHO, Height should not take precedence over clinical skills and analytical ability.
But height's not everything.

oh my god! i graduated in SPC
during my time, they never had a height requirement. i even have a classmate who had a cleft lip as a baby (but was obviously repaired naman!) and it was never a problem with the school. i guess with the influx of people wanting to become nurses they've resorted to doing this. sadness.
oh and i'm barely 5 feet by the way, and last night i took care of a 6 foot 15 year old who had surgery and it wasn't any different from taking care of a petite or a medium sized patient. nasa diskarte lang siguro. i mean i sometimes work with a nurse who towers over me but couldn't do any lifting herself because of back problems, so height is not an assurance of a nurses capability to do her job.
so my point, height doesn't matter when it comes to nursing :)

Back in 1989, I was worried that I will never realize my dream of becoming a nurse because of the height requirement in nursing schools. I took a shot at Trinity College which did'nt have a height requirement at that time (not sure if they do now) and luckily finished the four year course. Then I worked at St. Luke's shortly after graduation. My short stature of 4'9" had never been an issue with regards to performing my job. I simply applied the knowledge of body mechanics that they taught in school plus a lot of common sense. Now I take care of american patients that are mostly 3x my size and never had a broken back.
My point is that nursing schools should not hinder anyone from realizing their dreams just because "you are short and will have difficulty hanging IV fluids up in the poles" among other reasons. Height and looks have nothing to do with providing patients the best care they deserve.
